Title: WIP - Commission 1/8 Guts Berserker from Headlong
Post by: Joa on August 12, 2009, 08:53:16 PM
Another Berserk commission, even from the same company as the last one I did (http://"http://www.gkjapan.com/showthread.php?t=893") though imho this one is infinitely cooler/better/bigger/badder etc etc...

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=447) <- yours truly

+ the prepwork is a walk in the park. Seam lines are pretty much non existent and the only dud was the rather big midpart of the cape which must've been taken out of the mould prior to cooling down.
Enter hot water and some clamps and problem solved.

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=445&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=445)

Quote from: commissioner
- I would like to have the pillar of rock extruding from a wider mound of larger rocks (boulders if you will).
- The texture of the boulders should mimic the pillar (though the bigger the boulder, the less jagged the faces are).

Sure thing.
Liquid rubber ftw!
(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=444&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=444)

I'll cast pieces with plaster of paris and stretch the rubber mould differently for each cast making the sections not so like each other.
I'll also use some Woodland Scenics moulds I have + a few real stones.

Quote from: Commissioner
Eyes
- Glittering red paint in the sockets, then covered it with a layer of clear gel, giving it a bit of depth, glow, and shine.
- Basically, whatever makes the eyes stand out without being overly candy-apple red.

Will do.
However .. the eyes as they are cast would need some alteration depth wise;
(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=449&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=449)
I believe the *structure* in the eye slits will mess up what I have in mind, so with your permission I'll just groove them out to enhance the paint effects.

Tonight's summary:
Apart from the prep work (sanding etc) I glued 2 sections together; torso with arms + legs and cod piece.

Tomorrow:
-Add more rubber to the pillar mould.
-Clean up the head/jaw parts.
-Putty up the seams.
-Prime him.

More to come...

Nice! I love seeing these work-in-progress threads. That EVA-01 you're working on is pretty sweet, too. :guts:

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

the only dud was the rather big midpart of the cape which must've been taken out of the mould prior to cooling down.
Enter hot water and some clamps and problem solved.

I have made this kit myself and had exactly the same problem with the midpart of the cape. Took me ages to carve and sand it to fit - I never even thought to heat it and try to reshape it. Shows what skill and experience you have Joa - I'll remember this for future reference.

That's coming along beautifully Joa. I saw this same kit on YJA and there's still 2 days left. The only thing is that it's already put together and painted.

Hah that's funny. I remember seeing that exact painted kit on some collector's site about 3 years ago.

And if I'm not mistaken, there are 31 bids on that thing so far? Sheesh.

Yeah I know and its going for 50 000 yen! :isidro: I'm not suprised though this person did a pretty good job although in the pictures they posted in their auction it seems as though this person only painted one eye red.

Yep. He was being literal with the fact that Guts only has his left eye.
I'm pretty sure the armored berserk has both eyes glowing.

Oh okay I see but when Guts uses the Berserker armor both eyes are red.

@Slan & all: I'd appreciate if comments in this wip thread would be limited to constructive critique and questions regarding the build.
Thank you.

The cape will simply be hung over his shoulder, and due to the rather intricate detailing on it I won't be pinning this quite big and Heavy piece.
Hence ..

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=456&albumid=28&dl=1250254035&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=456)

.. I drilled corresponding hole patterns where I will add Liquid Steel (a very strong epoxy putty) which will make this baby totally set.

Oh, and I've primed the armour parts:

Title: Re: WIP - Commission 1/8 Guts Berserker from Headlong

He's coming together...

Here I dry brushed Humbrol silver #11 (an Enamel paint) on the entire suit:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=463&albumid=28&dl=1250446901&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=463)

Then I used white spirit and simply evened out the metallic pigments on all surfaces.
After that I used oils (Winsor Newton's  Winton colours) together with white spirit  and added rust to all rivets and recessed areas:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=467&albumid=28&dl=1250446901&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=467)

After that came the fun part where I added greens, reds, blues and black to the mix in order to accommodate the commissioner's wishes;
Quote from: the Commissioner
- The use of several analogous metallic tones (like gunmetal silver, copper, maybe a bit of rust, a bit of green from rusted copper) to supplement the basic silver/black of the armor will make it stand out above all other Armored Berserks ever painted.

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=465&albumid=28&dl=1250446901&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=465)

This is where I left off tonight as oils have the disadvantage of very long curing time:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=464) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=466)

Tuesday, I'll add a dark wash over this, follow up with more dry brushing but this time with a buffable paint and then a final wash.

Meanwhile I'll work on the base which I got approved yesterday.
Here's a silly photoshop mock up:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=461&albumid=28&dl=1250446901&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=461)

More to come ...

** edit

I forgot ...
The cape. I primded it.
The midsection that was warped from start had been taken care of, so I just heated the side parts and fixated them with CA glue.
I then sculpted in the minimal gap with Tamiya Epoxy putty (smooth surface type):

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=468&albumid=28&dl=1250446901&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=468)

Thanks, gents!  :chomp:

The oils dried up nicely thanks to the warm weather...

Here I've dry brushed buffable Humbrol Metal Cote Polished Steel (which I then polished) on all sharp and raised points:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=473&albumid=28&dl=1250549995&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=473)

I followed through with some dry pastels in recesses + added more burnt umber oil for the rusted areas.

I also started the eyes ....
White base in the sockets, then darkish red, then transparent gel with some flame red mixed in.

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=475&albumid=28&dl=1250549995&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=475)

.. will top off with clear cote with some more flame red.

Today I begun painting the cape, and since I thought it'd be over in an hour it took me ~5.

Why?

Because of .... PINHOLES.

They are nigh impossible to spot on the untreated/unprimed resin surface .. at least when embedded among such detailed wrinkles.
They didn't even show after the white primer, but after 2-3 washes of darkish blacks/browns...
It took me a good 3 hours to fill all of them with paint, and theses pics were taken when I was done. Or so I thought. Apparently... -_-

I'll do the rest tomorrow when I've calmed down.

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=478) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=480) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=477)

Sorry Chris .. I have to continue with the wip thread or I'll go Crazy ...  :guts:

OK, so I was NOT very pleased with the outcome of the eyes.
And as I was about to redo them anyway I thought about this crazy idea... which resulted in this:

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I did it like this:

Stripped the paint and precision dremelled out the eye slits:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=609&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=609)

Then I repainted the helmet as before and filled the slits with transparent gel (here uncured):

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=610&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=610)

I slaughtered a battery operated tea light (which proved hard to come by here, at least the kind I was after, so the commissioner had to buy a pack and send over) and used the chip along with a better LED.
I fixated the led inside the helmet and added more transparent gel:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=616&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=616)

Presto! Glowing eyes:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=615&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=615) (and a crappy photoshop blur job. The eye glow really looks like that though ^^)

On to the base ...

A quick mock up for the base...

I just used a 8,3" cheese platter we've got for the wooden base. The real one will be 12" across, so more room for war litter below:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=617&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=617)

Now for some rock sculpting ... ^^
It'll be a mix of plaster of paris groundwork and super sculpey textures.

More to come

EDIT: Bits and pieces of wood + the plaster casts I did from the pillar mold:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=620&albumid=28&dl=1253387781&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=620)

More to come in a day or 2 when the plaster that goes in the cracks tonight has cured...

EDIT2:

A-LA-LA-LA-LA ... not listening to self.

update .. again ..  :carcus:

I shot these pictures as a teaser for the commissioner, both to show the base thingy and to get him drooling.
It worked.

Today's venture via the smithy (also called the hobby room) resulted in a halberd;

A chop stick for the pole and the blade is Tamiya epoxy putty over a metal mesh core.
It will be sanded and refined before painting.

Also, I commenced a sword/sabre thingy ...

This is what I used for it:

Here (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=633) is what I came up with.
As you can see (if you've followed my previous works) I drew some inspiration from the sword of Zodd (http://www.gkjapan.com/showpost.php?p=1648&postcount=8) (mid post).
It will be refined, painted and weathered of course and I'll sculpt a severed arm to with it.

More details for the base ..

This is how far I've come with the shield (which will be smashed in the end) so far:

Walk through:

Grab the midsection from your nearest cigar box and create "planks" thus:

Use a steel brush to "scribe" grain:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=639&albumid=28&dl=1253784349&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=639)

Use your favorite stain or regular paint to darken the recesses; wipe off and sand lightly:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=638&albumid=28&dl=1253784349&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=638)

Do the buckler from either sheet lead (which I used) or an empty, cleaned metal tube for ex tomato sauce. Use soldering wire for the edge; hammer it out to desired thickness:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=637&albumid=28&dl=1253784349&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=637)

Fasten the buckler with cut off needle heads and glue the edge to place with super glue.
I'll detail the shield further with spikes and needleheads for the edge.

I am sooo looking forward to do the smashing once it's completed.
Really.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

EDIT (a few hours later)
Yes, mods .. I can take a hint ... ^^

The shield is done.

Walk through:

For the spikes I used the tack tips which I saved after my adventure with the mid-shelves of the cabinet (http://www.gkjapan.com/showthread.php?t=1104).
Again, I used needle heads for rivets/nails:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=641&albumid=28&dl=1253784349&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=641)

Then I used oils with white spirit to weather the metal down to a worn and rusty look...
Details:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=643&albumid=28&dl=1253784349&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=643)

Now, how should I smash it...

This afternoon I also begun the severed head w/helmet.
Yesterday I baked a sculpey core for the head, and I then used Tamiya putty to sculpt in some upper facial features around some Volks' Dollfie eyes:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=649&albumid=28&dl=1253826388&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=649)

The result after some very basic painting (there will be a smashed visor in front) is quite ok:

I finished off today's session in the hobby room by throwig some paint on the halberd and the sword thingy;

You piss on AoW.   :femto:

IMHO, that's a pretty gross statement though I can appreciate the compliment .. ^^
AOW do mass produced prepaints while I dedicate many hours for one custom display piece deriving from a different company; Headlong (who does kits, not prepaints).
AOW has produced quite a few decent kits (even the prepaints came in kit form once upon), so .. well...

My point is that you are comparing apples with oranges.

And ppl... NO FLAME WAR!
This has been discussed elsewhere, so please refrain to comment on this particular issue.
Thank you.

I spent this lovely autumn Sunday painting the severed arm...

It will later be blended onto the base + get some more blood spatter.

One severed head, Sir?

Coming right up...

The color for the helmet has not been decided yet, so here it's just a base coat of black.. still looks kind of cool.

first paint spatters done .. more weathering will be added to subtle it all down.

You might have wondered about the stretched eye lid on the severed head?

There's an explanation ..
Remember the crow I did for Zodd (http://www.gkjapan.com/gallery/files/1/3/scratch_details_.JPG)?

So, here's another crow (or, rather Raven)...

I begun by doing the armature to match the intended pose and fleshed out the basic form with my sculpting material of choice for this one; Super Sculpey:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=700&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=700)

Basic feather structure:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=701&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=701)

Done, feathers toned down and structured; pre baking and sanding/final touches:

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=702&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=702)

And here's a composite of what it'll eventually head at (no pun intended):

(http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?pictureid=703&albumid=28&dl=1250112033&thumb=1) (http://www.gkjapan.com/picture.php?albumid=28&pictureid=703)

.. more vivid and better IMO... ^^

and the DS received the same treatment with some heavy gel mixed in:

Quoted for truth. I have to say, I've always wanted a statue of Guts in his Berserker armor in that pose. I've seen them before and drooled, but have always told myself I'm content with what I already have and moved on... but WOW...
