Title: The "Art" of Photoshop: Obedient Master
Post by: Griffith on August 06, 2002, 03:50:20 AM
Made this last night and tinkered with it until now…

Got the basic idea a long, long time ago… it was a bit of fanfiction/predicion I was doing that brought the image to mind. It was originally a take off on Griffith confronting himself in Volume 12, but this is a much broader representation of the idea; it could represent Guts relationship with the Beast at any time, or his entire struggle with his inner demon(s) altogether.

An alternate idea for Guts’ “dream” was Casca (naturally). But this would have really specified the meaning of the picture to my own distorted speculation, so I decided to stick with the universal appeal I had in mind with Griffith (plus, he looks cooler floating in the middle of a space anomaly =).

-Griffith

P.S. I’d like to personally thank Kentarou Miura for drawing all this shit for me. By the way, name all the source material by chapter, win a cookie. ;)

Good job! And interesting perspective too!

Are you saying that Guts is nothing iwthout the DragonSlayer; that he can not take on the supernatural without it?? It definitely and literally is the difference between life and death....so does he fear losing it??

I think its his proverbial shield. But I always wondered about that. What do you all think??

One day the idea popped into my head that it would be totally cool if Miura redrew the cover of Volume 5 with the cast as they currently are. That's how this eventually came about...

the only problem is ehem! why only Guts looks so older than in vol.5. comparing with Griffith(no doubt he's reborn) and Casca(her insanity with long hair makes her look younger and prettier)

Title: A Chilling Vision of the Future
Post by: Griffith on February 04, 2002, 01:30:23 AM
After years of practice, I finally mastered the ancient art of time travel! So, what did I do with this amazing ability you ask?  Bet on sports, prevent the birth of my enemies, take over the past with weapons of the future? Of course not, I used it to gain insight into Berserk! I started by going to the year 2020, I figured Berserk would be finished by then , but after what I witnessed there, I didn’t care to go any further. Here's some proof of my story:

The image that makes Wally B. wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night.

Berserk volume 62, released July 6th 2020

“If Miura breaks 100, I’m putting down the series for good,
I mean it this time…really…quite laughing dammit!!” –Walter, 2018

I have to agree with future Walter, the series really went down hill after volume 38, when Guts defeated God Hand and then realized there was another God Hand, a left God Hand! And the whole God Feet arc was totally ridiculous. You also might be wondering what the deal is with the cover of volume 62, well, that’s the Black Skull Sword Knight.  In volume 58 Skull Knight and Guts needed more power to defeat Cyber-Wild Mk.2, so they did the magic “Union Dance”.  Naturally, Akira Toriyama sued Miura for blatantly ripping off Dragon Ball Z.  Miura then invited Toriyama out to dinner so they could “discuss” his concerns, and Toriyama hasn’t been seen since. So far, the police haven’t uncovered enough evidence to connect Miura with his disappearance, but evey body knows he did it. Another thing, Skull Knight would frequently die throughout the series, only to reappear later without any explanation as if he never left.  When questioned about the phenomenon Miura either feigns ignorance, giggles to himself, pretends he didn’t hear you or says, “It’s all part of the plan”. Also worth noting is that volumes 46-54 are totally blank, Miura later explained that a blizzard hit Midland that was so bad you couldn’t see or hear anything, but that it was the most action packed and hardcore part of Berserk ever. Fans ate it up and dubbed it the “Hell’s Winter Arc”, Miura started laughing manically and his pupils became like dolor signs.  Basically, the series is still going with no end in sight.

-Griffith

P.S. BTW, Olivier takes over France in the year 2012. He then uses all of his resources to seize Italy where he personally leads elite Death Squads created to hunt down Paradiselost. Olivier still hasn’t found him by 2020, only a few cryptic notes which read like:

…the late worm eats the dead bird…

…kiss kiss dear try again… ;)

…you can’t catch me…

…I’m the #1 berserk fan… ;)

Local village rumor has it that Paradise is some kind of immortal defiler. Of course, they also think Olivier is a vampire, probably because he only sleeps 1 hour a day and is always “sucking the blood” of nubile virgin girls, hail to the King!

P.P.S. I’d report on the futures of others, but all board members except Paradiselost, Olivier and me are dead by 2020.  I’d warn you all about how you die, but time-travel etiquette established by the Back to the Future trilogy deems it inappropriate, sorry guys. ;D

Interesting, this was what I originally came up with before changing it minutes before posting:

For the record, she's still supposed to be golden in the version I posted before, but I wanted to give her a more colorfully interesting and massive presence. Since Miura gave her an environment on page 16, I wanted to give an impression of her affecting her surroundings.

Nah, when I wrote the message I noticed I referred to it as a "him". Realizing my mistake, I decided to leave it but to change it to the equally wrong "her", just to fuck with everyone a little bit. I had no idea I would end up getting Hagued though. ;)

Didn't use either of those; but a lot of cutting & pasting in MS Paint, clone stamp, burn and dodge, and the trusty multiply tool to color it.

Title: "Funeral for a Thorn Bird" Finale
Post by: Griffith on April 03, 2004, 06:05:02 AM
Okay, I know I said I wasn't going to post this again, but I was messing with it over spring break and decided why not put it up in the creation station in it's "final" form. So anyway, here it is again, with the poem made famous by Colleen McCullough and all...

Funeral for a Thorn Bird

"There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out-carol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain.... Or so says the legend."

Since this is like the DVD Special Edition, here's my original concept and inspiration for the above work, which is actually the sequel to this masterpiece:

http://skullknight.net/griffdeath/

Score and background effects by Walter Bennet A.C.E. ;)

Enjoy.

Once again, subject-wise it's my favorite Berserk fanart.  In addition to that, the execution and post-rendering have an amazing atmospheric quality.  All of these combined... summoning up the scene in my mind always makes me get at least a little weepy.

The poem has amazing parallels as well. I really don't remember it from the good old days. I must have been drunk. Yes?

Now what am I going to do!? Because I really, seriously, 100% truthfully want someone to print it on a shirt and send it to me.

Actually, did it, then did it again because my computer crashed, ugh. When I first finished it (for the second time =) I had it looking all professional and sexy with the the colors all in the lines and shit, then I thought, "He's ripping himself out of the inside of a sea monster's fucking head..." and it became the so aptly titled thing you see before you. Love it or hate it; you can't accuse me of false advertising. ;)

I love the old sonic games.  I don't like how later levels become mazes though.  Even the 2nd zone in sonic 2... if its impossible to haul ass through the level in under 30s then it shouldn't be a sonic level.

I don't really feel like competeing much, it requires me to spend time upstairs (near teh family) and I loath that... plus, I have to run up and down to report scores.

Post by: Griffith on July 21, 2004, 12:25:39 PM
This is for speed, not for rings, but I can still get a shit load if all goes well.

Spin dash start, cross the bridge and then I drop and spin dash left into the spring. It sends me right fast and up to the next "floor" and I fly back in the air to get the shoes (it's a tad faster then just hopping directly to the shoes). Then I run up the ramp, go through the loop (the one with invincibility on top) or over, and cross the loopy bridge. Fly up, land and jump, if I time it all right I should get all three boxes (invincibility, and 20 rings). Then run along the loop tops until the spring bounces me up to the next top "floor." From here it's just a matter of jumping over the last yellow spring that'll launch you backwards.

I jump across, I tried your method but i don't think its any faster if I jump to the final island with the boots in it (instead of useing the spring).

Same here, hmm thats strange. Our methods are almost identical. It must be a couple of small things. You have to do it perfectly.

I went to the last checkpoint and waited for time to run out.  If you run out of time, the timer restarts, so you just spindash to the bouncer and you're done.  I said it technicaly wasn't cheating (no cheat codes involved, goes around the point of the competition though)

Yeah, a dramatic change in route. After you get the shoes, where you would normally head towards the loop with the invincibility power up on top, you need to jump at a certain point on the ramp. Like, right between where you're horizontal and vertical. If you do it exactly right, you'll spin jump completly over the loop with the invincibility power up and land on the shield power up that's on the ground. This will send Sonic into high speed orbit! After this, you should have enough juice to land on one of the three power up boxes on the ledge, sending you right back up. If you then hold back a tad, you should land on or near the yellow spring that sends you down the final leg of the zone with about 17-18 seconds left (assuming you did everything else PERFECTLY already) giving you a good shot at breaking the 22 second barrier. This is one of those things that would usually happen accidentally in Sonic, you happen to hit something radomly at a certain time, the planets are alligned, and something crazy and totally unexpected happens as a result.. except you have to do it on purpose here. :P

As of yet, I've not been able to break 21, and I'm pretty sick of trying. =)

i just went to a party last night. i didnt even want to leave the house because i didnt want to deal with people asking me "where's your costume?" i avoided all human contact until the party. as soon as i stepped out of the car some woman driving by slowed down, rolled down her window and said "hey, where's your costume!" drives me up a wall every year. i mean, how am i supposed to answer such a stupid question? "if i'm not wearing a costume, then i obviously dont have one, so i cant possibly tell you where this non exsistent costume is."

Here's the convoluted evolution of my convoluted sig...

The Source Image.

In the beginning... uh, let's just move on.

COMICBOOK ACTION SEX-O-RAMA! And my girlfriend's favorite version.

It has its charms. *woof woof*

The "Final" "Product", less is more.

Anyway, that's four variations showcasing the major changes of both the Beast and Hawk in relation to each other. There was a lot of crossover as an improved Beast was the impetus for an improved Hawk and so on and so forth. All told, there's well over a 100 variantions in all, to give you an idea, here's a sampling of the Beast's transformation from start to finish:

The culmination of time wasted.

Anyway, I'll close with a side by side of the source image and the final photoshop and while i'm raping Wally's bandwidth, a totally unnecessary finale featuring the same damn image with pretentious black bars on the top and bottom. Enjoy it while it lasts! :guts:

A riveting shocker for the grand opening...

Gaiseric sans skull-helmet!? OMG! :isidro: :badbone:<Handsome fellow.

Did this for fun today (takin' a break from the Intersticebles poster (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php?topic=7747.msg137820#msg137820)) and decided it wasn't worth doing a whole thread over nowadays, so this will be my own bullshit thread to stick this kind of crap in, including the old threads, which I'll be moving in here to make a giant mess (especially since half those threads are now listed under VH Bob's account; this thread will need an FAQ =).

Anyway, I'm not sure what brought this one on today, I think it was the idea of Gaiseric looking like Guts, so I decided to just see what that would look like real quick and... that's how things like this start off, so innocently. Though you can certainly see the influence of Walter's oekaki rendition (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/oekaki/index.php?pageno=4#205), which became more prevalent as I went on (sideburns!). Anyway, by the end I got something that I think is a cross between Guts, Griffith, Zodd, and Dracula, which is fine by me.

I never pictured Gaiseric to look like that but it really works, sort of has an insane look. Which part did the face come from? Really like in particular how you did the redish light flickering off the horse as well. Look forward to seeing more of course. ;)
Title: Re: Griffith's Ginormous Garbage Garage Going Gonzo Grand-opening! (Griff's colo
Post by: Griffith on August 12, 2007, 02:21:04 PM
Thanks, Sparny.

The face originally comes from episode 124 in volume 17, when he's killing the possessed dogs and horse; it's the  big disembodied Guts face on a black background (perfect for this, if not a bit large). As for the insane look (glad you noticed =), it was already a good insane Guts shot, but I wanted the eyes to be consistent with the one panel we see Gaiseric's eye, which is where the insane far off stare comes from.

Lovely work, particularly in bringing forth a few details, the symbol on his chest that sort of looks like it has horns, and the "blood tear" on the horses head are the two I like the most. Also the face, while being Guts goes well with the image, all in all great!

Title: 20 Years Later (20 years later)

(http://www.skullknight.net/griffith/20YL900.jpg) (http://www.skullknight.net/griffith/20YLFULL.jpg)

Feels like I've been messing with this one for 20 years, and I realized last night it'd never been properly put out. You might remember the strange advertisement (http://www.skullknight.net/griffith/22.jpg) that appeared in Episode 284, released April of this year. I can't remember when I originally started this, but Aaz, Wally, and I had been discussing using the image for a prank since at least April '06, so sometime before then. On that note, special thanks and final credit for the fake page itself should go to Aazealh and puella, who did the final editing and made sure the text, more or less, made sense. Aaz, of course, inserted the page, and if he cares to, could probably tell you more than I can about how many people were fooled worldwide. =)

Anyway, it all started with a simple concept image of Old Guts, originally inspired by Old Snake come to think of it, which was already done like a small ad in itself (and eventually became the "preview" image):

Poor Guts, he should have taken Skully's advice and laid off the armor. From here I started thinking more about the concept, and obviously Isidro and Schierke would be grown up at that point and probably figure heavily into the story, likely as the lead characters (kind of like Berserk: The Next Generation). So, that was my BS reasoning behind it, but it was really just an excuse to imagine grown up versions of them somewhat living out their childhood dreams; Isidro taking up the mantle of The Black Swordsman (complete with classic Yoda Puck) and Schierke basically developing into a younger incarnation of Flora in her prime.

Once the groundwork was laid for that, I wanted to combine the images of Isidro & Schierke with the one of the armor/time-ravaged Guts, which was harder than I thought (they obviously weren't just as they appear now) and I was going for a single page or poster size at that point. This ended up being a good thing though, since as I couldn't finish the damn thing, it continued to expand. I eventually wanted to see a sane, albeit 40-something Casca. I wanted her to look more tired than plain old, and still beautiful underneath that; Mrs. Vandimion was a good precedent and inspiration.

After that, I just sort of got off on a few tangents experimenting with the ideas; like, the Beast being the new Skull Knight, roaming the land in an even more pronounced transformation. Either with Guts' trapped inside the armor or somehow separated altogether (with old Guts living in solitary confinement in a mountaintop cave somewhere, no doubt). Plenty of plot possibilities were kicking around at this time; Guts' soul trapped in the armor needing to be saved, the demon/moonlight child grown up (http://www.skullknight.net/griffith/moonlight.jpg) into a powerful evil Guts clone (http://www.skullknight.net/griffith/gutsevil.jpg) (partly Dark Tower inspired), or finding old Guts to face off against the ultra-destructive "Beast Knight" (again, because he's the only one who can!) which is sort of a combination of those concepts. Anyway, I basically imagined the plot revolving around "the search for Guts" where they either need to find him, save him, or some such cliché shit.

Finally, I added a sorrowful Holy-Emperor Griffith Wyndham, seemingly untouched by time or humanity, the wine having long since lost its taste, sitting alone atop the World on an ice-cold throne, waiting... =)

I was going to do individual character write ups for where everything originally came from, the modifications made, and other inspirations (I shouldn't forgot to point out that the image is at least somewhat aesthetically inspired by the DVD cover of a favorite around here, Seven Samurai (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0780020685.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)) and I may write those still, but since I'm tired of typing about this, I'll leave it up to you guys to find and call out that stuff here. See if you can catch 'em all, people certainly were in the episode thread (before their posts mysteriously disappeared =)!

Hope you like it.

Some of you probably already saw this, and the topic is older than Midland's last King, but I found it quite funny to read through this thread I found today.

Some guys seem to have seen through the ruse quite fast, but there are always some gullible fools that serve your purpose. :)

Best quote from the topic : "The placement of the image in the zip file was legit, it was a joke from Miura. I got the distinct impression that it couldn't be a fake made by the SK people because it looked too good."  :ganishka:
Congratz to the team behind this cunning plan!

Wow, now that's a favorable impression, thanks man. Yeah, I'm always coming up with silly little stories behind these images and vice versa, otherwise I wouldn't think to add half the stuff. It's more about the concept than the final product anyway, which I just want to look as much like Miura himself had drawn it that way in the first place (the goal is really to change as little of his work as possible, just find stuff of his that fits already, and alter the context).

On the other hand, sometimes it leaves people asking "Whats' that thing doing in there?" because they don't know the "plot." =)

Now that that's behind us, how about a 100 years later follow-up?  :badbone:

Hmmm, maybe actually. I had a little idea I never did that could work with that...

I love it, Grif! Griffith on his chair of despair is very powerful and well done. Also Isidro look pretty damn cool, great job!

Yeah, sometimes Isidro gets knocked for being an annoying kid character, but he's actually a total badass for his age, and I wanted to show him living up to that potential. And yeah, I've always wanted to see King Griff and imagined him like this in some fun scenarios, so this was the perfect excuse. The whole 20 years later concept really started as an excuse to do neat things we've always wanted to see, but fit under one umbrella: old/bearded Guts, consequences of the armor, badass adult Isidro, King Griffith, etc.

Very beautiful work! I especially like the work on the girls, there's a certain dignity upon them. Very powerful stuff!
Isidro is just killer, but that's okay if one considers his master.^^
But yeah, i'd like to see further entries, especially for Farnese and Serpico! Mahou Shoujo Farnese..or in this case Mahou Otome.

Yeah, I wanted to see Schierke standing tall and confident, and Casca, well, at least not drooling or anything finally. Wanted to see the shoe on the other foot with her, where she's the one carrying the large burden, much like she did with the the Hawks after Guts and Griffith left. Restore some of her dignity.

As for Farnese and Serpico, you can just look at Mr. and Mrs. Vandimion. :serpico:

Since Conan was mentioned as being one of the influences for Mr. Miura, I think it would be cool to see a picture of guts sitting on his throne with the DS at his side, and Casca in a skimpy get up at his feet in a sexy pose, ala Frank Frazetta.

Suki already covered the Conan/Frazetta angle on the oekaki, if you're interested:

Best quote from the topic : "The placement of the image in the zip file was legit, it was a joke from Miura. I got the distinct impression that it couldn't be a fake made by the SK people because it looked too good."

Haha, well, I'll take that as a compliment; glad they liked it, anyway. My favorite line in there though was the guy who said he saw the image, on the Evil Genius forums of course, before the episode came out.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words all, I always feel sort of sheepish about these things though, because even though I'm doing some editing, it's still 100% Miura's work that I'm like... desecrating, basically. =)

Okay, individual write ups for everybody in Berserk 20 Years Later, in order of their insertion (with built-in character/author reactions =). I'm going to try to keep these short...

Old Guts - Basically, Godot from volume 17, but with Guts eyes, ears, and what are supposed to be armor scars added. Also, his trademark bangs, all white at this point instead of just a patch, also made the hair a bit shorter and more course in general to match Guts better. Godot had surprisingly pretty hair.

:guts:

The Isidro Swordsman - A black swordsman body from the Berserk prototype, when Guts had more sassy attitude, perfect for Isidro. Removed the crossbow and replaced it with an Isidro pirate sword, as well as adding his fire dagger to his belt. His hair and face is a heavily modified Gambino, though not so much that everyone didn't point out that he looked just like Gambino when I'd show it to them.

:isidro:

Wise Puck - Literally did nothing here, it's just Yoda Puck directly lifted, rotated, and resized. Haha, thanks Miura!

:puck: :miura:

Ms. Schierke - Was harder than the sum of her parts. Just her body from the end of the Troll episode, when her face is darkened out, replaced that with Flora's face, sans wrinkles and with a new hairdo. Aaz thinks the shading looks like shit, like she's a burn victim, but I think the hat justifies it and I liked it, even if it's not totally in sync with the rules. Was going to use the mega hot fire Flora for the face but... I didn't want Schierke to look like a sex pot, at least not on this project. Nice and respectable instead... I'm kind of regretting that choice at the moment, eh Schierke?

:schierke:

40-something Casca - Hmmm, I think I basically just took the most recent flashback Guts had of her, modified the armor so it was something other than her Hawks' era duds, and then added a unique Casca face. It's unique because it's actually from the scene when Guts assaults her, after he bites her breast and she's lying there like... well, a sexual assault victim. Yup, that's the face, rotated, barely aged (she already looked messed up), and with a slightly modified mouth. So, in the future, Casca's default expression will be one of somebody who's constantly just been sexually assaulted. Makes sense to me.

:???:

Beast Knight - This one was probably the easiest modification, though I think I did more than I even remember or can tell by working, it went together so easy I don't recall. It's just Guts from volume 27 dragging his sword with the blacked out beast head replaced with an earlier fuzzy version, probably from the same episode I got Casca's face from in volume 23 (think I shortened the nose a bit). Anyway, it came together very simply as at this point the additions to the picture were basically just throw ins.

:chomp:

Holy Emperor Griffith - Well, it's the King's body and throne, but got rid of most of the textures to go with a more simplistic pure white robed look for Griffith. And the I think his head came from after he slept with Charlotte and was depressed over Guts, but I'm not even looking at the image right now. The throne has a few details tossed in like Griffith's shield from his dream of a peaceful life with Casca, and  the holy emblem synonymous with him, but this was more about addition by subtraction; give it that perfect white Griffith touch. Throne went through a few incarnations too, like the height, at first I made it way lower, but eventually I ended up raising it even higher because I had room, could, and it looked more balanced. I think I had totally removed the cushion texture on the seat at one point, then reapplied it later myself (don't remember why, sort of inefficient, but looks okay). And after all that conquering and evil ruling, I bet he still misses his old buddy Guts, huh?

:griff:

Zodd, still the Immortal - From Griffith's exodus from Albion, I think I flipped the image... maybe? Thanks again Miura!

:zodd: :miura:

As for some odds and ends, the logo had a bazillian variations but this was the earliest and best and I'm glad I came to my senses and stuck with it (adding the translation of "Berserk" and "Years Later" to match Miura's name only the night before posting), also, there were several versions filled with black bird silhouettes. Originaly I wanted to show birds circling above the Beast knight, inferring they were following his path of death and destruction and feeding on the remains. But that itself never really came out right, and then I tried using the the bird motif all over, and it just turned into a big mess, so I gave the birds the bird and told 'em to flap off. Anyway, if anyone has any questions, a detail or something I didn't talk about, or maybe something you notice I missed here, go ahead and shoot.

Brilliant Tongue-in-Cheek work Griffith. I was able to tell it was a photoshop project but it's Cool to see that it was one of our own who was responsible for fooling a large amount of people, as well as making a neat piece of fan-art (What about the two Japanese users who showed up only once in that thread though? Sock Puppets?). I only wish you had included the Adult Moonlight Child/Evil Guts in the finished product though. Something about that character is subtly creepy . . .

They showed up more than once and more than in a single thread, and there were also 3 I think, but yeah, they were sock puppets. :guts:

Oh yeah, forgot to talk about our REAL Japanese users that know the top secret infos! There was a little Silence of the Lambs tossed in for good measure: Tomo Ruisu = Louis Friend = Iron Sulfide = Fool's Gold. I think Tomo even posted a few times before in other threads to "establish" himself. =)

And of course his back up, and second source to confirm, Miyamoto; a name our video games have brainwashed us to love and trust since childhood.

The Setup:

Yes nothing in YA so far but look for any news regarding Miura not nessesarely having to do with Berserk. Theres been rumors about him working on a possible side project but no official confirmation. Im very curious and wondering if anyone on these boards knows something?

I've heard the rumors about side projects too. Not anything about Japan but Berserk stuff like a art book or video game and even a gaiden like snow and flames but bigger. Thats the one I want and have heard most and since this isn't a normal break the silence from all camps hopfully means something else from what we've seen before.

Wow that is great to hear! I had just about given up hope hearing anything from this board because most people seem to be missing the point that Miura isn't only still hard at working but possibly on a other Berserk project or story. I have heard a lot of the same things going around including that it is no coincidence that in absense of Berserk from YA they have been publishing background information and particularly timelines. I really think it is going to be some sort of history of Berserk. Maybe even something involving the past of Skull Knight and the forming of Midland? That is only my speculation though.

The April Fools:

Check out this!!! A Japanese book vendor started a stir about what Miura was working on over the past many months! He said  that this is on flyers to be in the new release of YA Arasi and theres sure to be more infos in YA with the publish of episode 284! It looks like our suspicions were right!!

This was obviously met with skepticism, but Miyamoto to the rescue!

It may be no joke. I came here to share the same thing but looks like Tomo beat me to it. This has been getting buzz for months its not just something that came up today. Its even been discussed here before in the current ep threads if you remember. I for one hope its on the mark because Id much like that over a game or artbook.

You dont sound like one to decide gaijin. Do you even know what YA Arasi is? its okay to skeptical until its more widely confirmed but theres no need to sound off ignorantly because youve been easily fooled by others. A lot of people have been following this for months.

If its a joke its from Japan but nobody has said so. So its likely real and i hope so! About the timing in the story from those knowing better then I is it could be something like a gaiden like the episodes of snow and flames. Something already done but that would not continue as part of the series. But none really knows. Maybe its why during his break they ran timelines of berserk history?

Thanks guys.

As for the shield, since I committed to this taking place during Guts' year of training after leaving the Hawks, I wanted the shield to be just some random junker practice shield that Guts was experimenting with, it could be from anywhere, likely free from Godot's or something (BTW the sword IS from Godot's, which you can see in volume 11). Anyway, I originally thought he could have bought it at a bizarre or something for nostalgia, but I didn't think that was really in keeping with the nature of his journey, and also, the Hawks didn't even use shields. =)

P.S. I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Aaz, CnC, VHBob, Wally, and the other folks in the chatroom (you know who you are) for their suggestions and support. Thanks again guys!

Had to share this: after a lot of work and a long journey for this instrument, I have now built and designed myself the coolest (looking) guitar ever; behold, "Cherry Axe!"

Combining the paint job of Jimi Hendrix's Monterrey Strat on the front with the the look of Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat on the back, I beg the question; will I now sound as good as both of them combined when playing this guitar!?

Yes. I think I will. :guts:

Kidding aside, this was my first guitar, I got it back in high school, and it already had a history with local people and bands before I bought it from a friend. Now, don't let that fool you, it was a total piece of shit made in God knows where. This thing was as cheap as they come, and went through many different iterations before arriving here (at one point it even had a maple neck and blue fringe on the body with an American flag pickguard =). Anyway, back in '04 I put all the original shit parts back on it, spray-painted the body half-white, and my then girlfriend (Onyx Magnolia here) was nice enough to paint it for me based on the Monterrey design. At that point, it was basically a showpiece and nothing else. Literally hung it on my wall.

Until... last week.

When I finally decided to do what I'd been thinking about for years and fix her into a player! Arriving at that decision is a long story in itself, but needless to say, a nice guitar was scrapped for parts, but hey, it wasn't my best, or my first, so tough shit. Anyway, except for the neck plate and pickguard, I took everything off Cherry Axe; neck, hardware, electronics, knobs, buttons, everything; even the screws were replaced with all American Strat hardware, electronics, and pickups, and a nice special edition Fender Mexi neck. This thing was so shitty that after soldering the real electronics, I actually had to rout the cavity further so they would even fit and let the pickguard lay flush with the body. After that, I plug in and wait to hear the telltale signs of either total silence, or hum like a vacuum cleaner. Silence, could be very bad, or very good. So, I throw on the neck, a string, plug in, still silent, not good, pluck, and... VRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMM!!! She roars to life! Success.

Since then, it's just been a matter of playing and tuning/setting her up the way I want. As for today, I wasn't happy with the back, it was all fucked up from my beating up my shitty old guitar phase, and had some duct and electrical tape covering some of the damage, which looked okay, but still, kind ugly on what would otherwise be a nice guitar, despite all the other superficial damage. But, that electrical tape reminded me of something, and gave me an idea; with some white electrical tape as well, I could make it look like EVH's Frankenstein and the back of my guitar would look cooler the front of most. So, I did.

And that's how I made my first piece of shit guitar into a respectable player, and the coolest looking guitar ever. Or the most cliched one... whatever, it's my first and I love it. =)

The end.

Update on the back: Cleaned it up a bit cosmetically, moved the little Peavy logo (from the strap I originally got with this guitar) and slightly adjusted the shortest black bar on the lower left so it intersects with the three long ones that go across the entire body. Looks a lot better overall now.

It's really sounding good too.

It's probably a custom-designed logo, as in drawn out and not typed.

This was the first photoshop project I ever did, literally how I learned to use it, and still one of my old favorites, dubbed Phoenix Rising:

So, a couple weeks ago I thought to try and restore, remaster, and/or up-res it and these are the results. The first a hi-res "restoration" more or less in line with the original:

The second a "remaster" with some fixes or improvements, solidifying the background color and how it surrounds our subjects, a smoother blur of the rubble behind, and even incorporating original feedback from none other than CnC, who pointed out the multiple light sources were indeed insane (my rationale at the time was the physical rules of the world no longer applied to Griffith =), so I lost the "sun" as well:

Threw this idea about the many faces of Cooper together as a gag after the end of Twin Peaks: The Return *SPOILERS*, but then went back and kind of spruced it up enough to be an avatar and toss it in here (there's still a few things that could be better, so I may add or improve more details, but in that case I'll just stealth reupload):

The idea is based on the many sides of Cooper we see over the course of Twin Peaks ala the five faces of Shiva in Hindu art. Here's the base source image (https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5RQcTOyxD6U/VtpO9VJ1ZYI/AAAAAAAAb20/C5mkqru355A/s1600/shiva-five-faces-panchanana.jpg), preferred for its Peaky background as well as the viability to more easily photoshop Coopers on it. From left to right: Cooper as "Dougie Jones," the Dougie Jones Tupla, Special Agent Dale Cooper, Richard, and Mr. C the evil Cooper doppelganger. Additions to the rest of the image include Laura Palmer superimposed above them (I should have superimposed a giant image of Cooper's face over the whole thing =), the key to Coop's room at the Great Northern in his lap as he sits on blue "rose" petals on top of a skinned owl, and he holds in his hands a golden shovel, a slice of cherry pie, the log, and no doubt a cup of damn fine coffee. He's also wearing a ring you might recognize.
