Title: WIP - Ehren's Casca kit
Post by: Joa on October 25, 2010, 01:50:26 PM
I just opened the magic box (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php?topic=11495.0) to inspect the parts.

Just .. wow!  :judo:

The scale is roughly 1/5 and the castings are PERFECT.
All pieces are really clean and the details are awesome!
There are small hints at seam lines which will be a breeze to clean up.

I've heard comments of her head being "too wide" and too big, but holding the face part (nice touch with the hair as a one piece cap, btw!!!) it's not that bad, though there is room for "improvements" if you're a basically skilled modeler.
I think I will rather prolong her chin rather than carve away at the sides.
Also, her torso feels a bit short, and this is a really easy fix by adding about 1cm (0,4") to the upper armor to better resemble the original drawing and even out her proportions.
Here (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs459.ash2/73226_479115633071_575493071_6824518_6775429_n.jpg)'s a snap composite of what I am hinting at.

At a pricetag of $140 (+ shipping), this is a REALLY nice rendition of Casca and will; I am sure, paint up out of the box to a very nice statue.
If you're willing to put a few hours extra work into her, she'll be an absolute Masterpiece!

A huge Thank You to Ehren (Silvia) for listening to us fans deciding to cast her.

I've been fiddling with this kit back and forth since I got it, and quite forgot to tell anyone about it (save my facebook contacts).

While the kit itself is Very nicely executed, there was (as I mentioned in my oob review above) room for "improvement" or modifications if you like.

I found the waist area a tad too "thick" and short, not entirely matching my personal picture of the fighter woman Casca.

Here's a photoshop mock up I did illustrating just that, using the illustrational source material as comparison:

I chopped her up, cutting the torso in 2 along the natural seamline + elongated it & her arms accordingly using armature wire:

Obviously that's a crappy photoshop mock up blur thingy in the middle...

Here's what the torso looks like now, resculpted and compared to the original piece:
I also elongated the lower armor skirt part + upped her chest one size.
Note that this is not that visible once the torso got longer; it's all about proportions...

black line marks reference point on both pieces

I wanted the face to be a cross between the manga and the anime, so I carved away and resculpted the eyes, mouth, chin and hair.
Not that I dislike the more human, naturalistic touch to her features Ehren gave her; it's just not my Casca... ^^

Since this is her 2:nd armor (of the 3 she uses during the Golden Age), it's obviously from between the 100 man slayer battle and Griffith's imprisonment.
I think I will replace the base to one resembling the Castle of Doldrey as that is the only pivotal battle sequence with her in that armor, but I haven't made my mind up yet.
Anyhow .. I really want her to be wearing her helmet, so what's a guy to do?

That's it for now...  :casca:

**edit

Oh, I forgot .. I had the sword cast in .925 Sterling silver!  :carcus:

That's the raw silver to the left.
It is being worked over by my personal smith Sarah Burchill  (http://fairyfrog.deviantart.com/gallery/25750619)(<- click for the Kill Bill Katana she made for me)
Due to time restraints and the cost, I choose to not have this sword made from scratch though, as opposed to the Katana.
She'll polish it to hell and gild some details gold and others will be oxided.

**edit #2

The helmet is done:

A first mock up mount of the kit.
The head is a bit loose, leaning backwards and will be tilted this way once secured.

A comparison shot with the original layout to better show off the proportion changes.
The black lines are for reference; heel, boot top and difference in height torso wise:

I've been debating which color scheme to go with, and with the help of the Missus; I decided on this (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1384.snc4/163643_10150097190993072_575493071_7290779_7395168_n.jpg).

When browsing for suitable color references I noticed a painting which showed she miss spurs(!).
I hadn't really thought about it, but will of course add these in a day or two.

I started painting her today.
First stage is the armour, and here's a quick in prog walkthrough:

And here's a youtube turnaround of the finished polished helmet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6SQwQQtuH0

Sarah finished the sword today.
I got this rather crappy pic via mms, but I can't wait to see it in person!!!  :casca:

So ... I spent the better part of the past 3 hours stippling enamel paint to simulate something like raw silk:

Another view which also shows off the shiiiiiiiny armor =)

All the armor parts have been weathered down with a black oil wash + some "rust".
This will be muted later on with dry pastels. Here's the helmet:

The cape received the same stipple treatment as the skirt.
Here it looks kind of glossy, but that's because the paint haven't dried fully.
I'll mute the shadows etc with dry pastels later on.

Cape, skirt and belt thingies done for tonight.
Many more steps yet till I am finished though.

that brush oil rust technique looks really freaking good. That close up of the skirt I thought it was cloth at first!!

guess I didn't pay attention to this post but that torso improvement helps a lot too.

nice job dude.

Most of the parts are finished, save the sword hilt.
The eyes will be clear coted once the transparent Heavy Gel has fully cured.
The figure won't be fully assembled till the base is done.
The helmet won't be attached to the face/head till I've added the eyelashes which will show up in a week or so.
When the figure has been mounted on the (not yet decided) base, I'll go over her for final touch ups.
Oh, and I'll get the sword tomorrow! =)

This is awesome...Very cool to watch you go through the process, thanks for posting all the pictures along the way! I can't wait to see this beauty finished.  Just curious, are you going to do anymore shading to the face? Are you planning on keeping Casca that dark? She seems several shades too dark, if you're going for accuracy.  Well, here.  I did a some quick tweaks to show you what I mean.

Aside from that the values and finish look fantastic, especially the metal work.

Are you planning on keeping Casca that dark? She seems several shades too dark... [/snip]

Thanks for pointing this out!
IRL, she's quite a few nuances lighter, but yeah .. she turned out way too dark.

Also, I apparently made her eyes too big + I didn't quite like the way they turned out, so...
I basically stripped her of all the paint and resculpted the eyes area, her nose + tweaked her mouth to a more smirkish expression.
Adding to that, I lowered her right eyebrow + lifted her left ditto.
The new colour is way more accurate to Miura's paintings.

I finally decided on the base.
It's basically from directly after her dismount at the Castle of Doldrey.

The base is more or less done.
The sand will have to set so I can add dry pastels + the chine hoops will probably be weathered down and rusted.

The barrel was made the traditional way from cedar veneer which was painted, sanded and burnt.
The chine hoops were made from soldering lead which was hammered to appropriate thickness and then "soldered" together.
You can barely see it through the cracks in these shots, but there is actually grain in the barrel.

*** added progress 2011-01-03***

Nearing the end of the road...
The chine hoops were rusted down and I added some rusty nails and a bit extra twine to the pole which was muted using analogous tones of green, blue and burnt umber.
The whole base then received a healthy amount of dry pastels.

Casca's eyes are dark brown, just so you know. Even putting aside all of Miura's color illustrations, Guts comments on it when they first meet: "...黒い瞳..." Not the kind of thing I'd take liberties with, although obviously it's up to you.

Fantastic Job with the face re-paint and sculpt.  A major improvement, thanks for taking my critique gracefully! She is looking beautiful, and wow...That base is gorgeous.  Very inspiring work.

Although I do agree with Aaz, a darker eye color will yield a closer resemblance to Casca.  If the green is subtle I could see it working, though.  I can't wait to see her all put together with her hair and helmet...Wow! : ) You could probably make mad bank if you dropped this on ebay - but I wouldn't do it in 216 years.  Har-har.

May I ask how you engraved the letters into the wood? A wood-burner?

PS: Thanks for all the great photos.  Keep them coming!

In the translations I've read, both manga and anime the line (as I don't read Japanese) goes "Dark eyes", not implicating any specific colour.
I've always viewed her eye colour as green, and the  acrylic ones are pretty dark.
My choice of course as I build this kit for myself, not some hardcore fanboy who'd kill over it...

That's what it means, "dark" or "black", like in "Black Swordsman". It doesn't refer to green; they're brown.

My choice of course as I build this kit for myself, not some hardcore fanboy who'd kill over it...

Yeah yeah, just figured someone who cared enough to recreate a coherent background from the story and have it made the fancy way might also care to get the character's details right.

Are green eyes regarded as dark, generally?

My choice of course as I build this kit for myself, not some hardcore fanboy who'd kill over it...
Hardcore fanboy? So, not the kind of fanboy that paints dolls. The other kind of fanboy. Got it.  :void:

Obviously, if you want your project to be inaccurate even after investing so much time, that's your prerogative. But this is hardly the place to throw around the F-Word.

PS: Fanboy. Not fuck.

Hahahah, that made me lol.

Well, I think green eyes can be regarded as dark.  But that's more of a hazel, which blends brown and green.  It really depends on the brand of acrylic eyes - It could be a dark enough shade to look accurate.  The darker you get the harder it is pick up subtle hints of color.

Ok let me stop this right away: her eyes are brown. In my post above I started with "even putting aside all of Miura's color illustrations" for a reason: he gives her brown eyes (and for reference, in the context of the sentence in Japanese I don't think "黒い瞳" can refer to green eyes). End of the story. There's no arguing to be done about it, so let's not uselessly derail Joa's thread.

After ALL this time of waiting for the eyes... Dissappointment.
I would NOT call these green .. they are more of a cross between hazel and purple (!!!!).

After the initial rage I tried them on her though, and the result was so nice I decided to go with these either way:

"Hellooo, tough guy..."

..she seemed to think.

Now for the standard one week quarantine and then final touchups.

May I ask how you engraved the letters into the wood? A wood-burner?

I used both a wood burner and my dremel along with our cooking torch.
The result is a quite weathered, antiqued look.

Very nice close up with the face. I really like it. Without getting into the eye color discussion.. since you got the wrong one is it too late for you to tell them about it and return/swap them out for the ones you wanted? Seems like you're sticking with it and want this project done though! heh, awesome job either way.  :casca:
