Title: Podcast Q&A
Post by: Walter on August 17, 2012, 05:22:52 PM
If you have any questions for the admins, or special guests, leave them here. Just be sure to bold the question!

Questions can be about pretty much any subject—not just Berserk—but please be respectful.

The resident Musashi (aka Griffith) has been known to scale high walls/ mountains in search of the Yagyu, so my question to all of you and/ the Special Guest (if any) is do you go on treks/ hikes/ climbs/ indulge in outdoor activities like that? Honestly, it could be anything like kayaking/ boating/ whatever else that's in the wild.

Movie of the year so far?

Music album of the year so far?

Is there any one item (or more) from Berserk you would actually buy if it were in 1:1 scale? - I guess this one's more for Griffith and Walter than Aaz.

Why?

I think it's because you have more memorabilia than the two combined.

I could ask you what you want, if you want me too :slan:

Along with a few flashback scenes during the Millennium Falcon arc and the recent 3 episode story arc, Miura has given us a taste of how early Berserk (more specifically, the character designs) would have looked like, if he'd already had all the technical/artistic skills and experience that he's got now, back in the late 1980s when he began the series. I don't know if this question has been asked of you before, but do you wish that Miura would someday go back and redraw the Black Swordsman/Golden Age arcs  applying his modern techniques and knowledge so that those early volumes' art would be more in line with his more matured and contemporary art style that Berserk has had over the past decade or so?

Why?

Sorry Aaz, I wondered whether they owned any of the busts and thought if there was that 1 thing they would jump at if it was made, sorta, that's what I was thinking before phrasing the question. Please (please!) do answer the question too, I'd love to hear from you definitely! I meant for you all to answer, what I wanted to say (n what was in my head) didn't translate well in my question's follow-through, sorry again.

Here's some Dark Souls related questions for Walter and Aazealh.

What are some things you like and dislike about Dark Souls?

What is your favorite play style?

Would you recommend Dark Souls to people who have not played Demon Souls?

and

Any particularly funny/upsetting deaths that stick out in your mind?

You could always make this a topic, but Griffith might be left out. (He doesn't play Dark Souls right?) I wouldn't mind waiting until Griffith plays the game. :daiba:

Gah, in the rush to record today I forgot to implement this question in the show notes, so we never got to it. We actually address all the questions except the last one, but trust me I'm sure I'll still be raving about Dark Souls again by the next podcast. And I have a few funny deaths, most of them involve falling from huge heights in Blighttown.

What would you do if you met Kentarou Miura? Let's assume it's a setting where you're not a part of a crowd of people. Let's just say a hypothetical situation where you know he wouldn't be bothered by you interacting with him. It's you and the most highly skilled Japanese interpreter on Earth in front of Miura. What would you say/do?

Good question. So good that it's actually already scheduled as a topic for Part 3.   :griffnotevil:

Let's just say that if you ask a Griffith question and it doesn't get answered in the show, it's because we've got a segment planned for it.

In what ways could you see the dynamic between Griffith and Charlotte playing out going forward? I think I remember you guys brushing up on this before, either in a post on the forums, or in an earlier podcast.

When the trance of recent events leading up to Falconia wears off, and people have time to grasp everything that has happened, what kind of reactions/discussions/conflicts do you think we'll begin to see out of some of the people within Falconia? Any specific persons of interest that come to mind?

I'm also interested in your take on Mule's interaction with Griffith at the end of volume 23. He was compelled to behave a certain way, but felt strange that he was behaving as he was, like he didn't have control over his actions, but still had control over his thoughts. I'm not exactly sure if I've interpreted that right, or exactly what I should read into that. Perhaps you could elaborate on the possible implications of that?

Timid. :serpico:

Aazealh, I've heard about how you've read Berserk only once (it's not a question actually, it's purely amazing!) but has there ever been a time when you've gone back to look at an image/ re-read something specific said by a character/ etc.?

How many times have you re-read the manga or gone back and re-read specific volumes only maybe?

Is there a way you mark your volumes with regard to the translations of SK vs DH? In the sense, I was unaware of that small bit of translation that Walter happened to mention in the Rakshas topic moments ago (I'm conscious of the ones since joining the site), and it struck me - maybe I should sit with every episode of old and read it side by side with the SK translations. Have you like marked up your volumes with corrections or this is again, INHUMAN GODLY MEMORY?!?!

I just did a Skullcast binge and you've pretty much already touched on all of the questions I asked.

I've been watching some old home movies from '90-'93, and I see items in them that I still own and use. The alarm clock in front of me is over 21 years old. Crazy that it's been kept around that long, but it still serves its purpose. So I guess I have two questions, hope these are new:

Do you pack rat old stuff?

What's the longest standing thing that you've owned throughout your life?

And maybe a little different:

What's the oldest thing that you've inherited/bought?

For 322

How do you think Rickert will view the Apostles in Falconia, especially after he and Erica were just saved by one?

For Griffith

Other than all the evil we've seen at the Eclipse, it seems that Miura has taken pains to portray Griffith in a fairly positive light since his incarnation.  Do you think it's likely that Miura will continue to portray him in a benevolent fashion as a "Savior," treating the Eclipse and former apostle behavior as simple pragmatism to reach a positive end.  If so, do you think Guts could be viewed as the new villain by the world if he comes after him?

Edit: I'm aware that attacking Flora shows his true colors to an extent, but still Miura could've painted him as a more overt manipulator.  The ambiguity is what interests me.  Griffith seems to have taken pains to appear as legitimate and loved as possible.  Could he be manipulating the way the Idea of Evil works, though humanity's collective desires, and if so, how?

I was trying to organize all of my old YA magazines while doing a little housecleaning the other day, and it inspired the following questions:

What do you do with all of your ancient YAs that you don't want anymore?

And...

Since you're buying the magazine anyway, do you have any manga that you follow in YA besides Berserk? Any that you'd recommend?

Not sure if these have been covered before... my memory ain't so good these days, especially now that there are so many podcasts! :ganishka:

Spider Sniper & Gekkoh (AKA Cool Beauty Revenger). Older series, but you totally should check them out. TheSkyTraveller was also a huge fan of these two back in the day. Pity she's not around anymore to attest of it. :griffnotevil:

Which ones? Those that make a sort of fresco? They're the MBRs released some years ago.

I guessed so... :ganishka: Looks like you'll be running out of space soon, though!

Space is expandible. There are more shelves not shown in the picture. :slan: And a couple drawers elsewhere too. Whenever I run out of space I'll just get another rack.

Cool, I will! It's funny, I don't think I've seen these in any of the YAs I've owned. Are they already finished?

Hehe, don't bother, it was a joke recommendation. Gekkoh is finished I believe, and last I heard Spider Sniper had moved to YA Arashi. Both are pretty terrible. Personally I only care about Berserk as far as YA is concerned. There have been various series featured over the years that aren't too bad (e.g. Futari H, Cestus, DMC) but I never bothered. March Lion seems neat I guess, but same thing, I haven't checked it out.

Why is there something rather than nothing? :troll:

Morbid question:

- If Miura died today, how would you feel about the series as it stands? What would you want for the series going forward?

Luckily, we do not have to contemplate such things as they are, but I'm curious. If this question hasn't been asked yet, I can't believe it. So forgive me for being repetitive if it has. Let's turn this question around:

- If you were diagnosed with a life ending ailment or illness, what would be on your bucket list of things to do? What would be your regrets?

Obviously, not getting to finish Berserk. Or maybe I should ask questions more in line with the holiday spirit? :serpico:

- Have you ever shopped on Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Any past experiences relating to that?

- What do you think about this event infringing further onto Thursday? The consumer attitude of the United States in general?

- What do you think of the holidays in general?

It's that time of year.

Have you ever bought a game that you ended up not playing? What's the longest you've owned a game without playing it? And how many games in your collection do you leave unfinished?

Interested in what Walter has to say, considering his sudden huge backlog of games.
Oh, it's not sudden. I've been living with my "condition" for years.  :void: Calling it a backlog is also a misnomer, since it presupposes that I ever have any intention of playing some of these games. I don't. I just can't resist NOT owning them if they're going for such crazy prices.

The only way I rationalize it is that I actually don't spend much money on them. Over Christmas I spent $47. On Thanksgiving it was under $60. And that's about 20-25 games. Pretty decent.

Speaking of which, I recently hit 500 games in my Steam catalog.

I'd say I have the same problem though. Maybe not on that level. I finally got a PS3 through the holiday bundle, and I already have 11 games for it. I have no idea when I'll get to them and I have two more on order. I also picked up Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 3 for the PC for $12 total. I don't even have a PC capable of playing them at the moment.

I'm pretty sure this is the appropriate thread, but I just wanted to throw out an idea for a future podcast.  Anyway, I posted occasionally years ago at BSOM and remember Walter and Griffith (I think you're the same one from then, right?), and that got me thinking about something.  A lot of manga/series have had influential websites and communities, and they largely fall to the wayside.  I was trying to look up some of the older sites on archive.org, but the problem is that if you don't remember the url, and it isn't on Anipike classic, there's really no way to find them again.

So, it would be interesting to hear about your first experience with the series and how you found it online.  What were some of the best sites that deserve to be remembered, aside from BSOM (if any)?  Did Berserk have a Usenet presence i.e. an alt.fan.berserk or something like that?  Who contributed through the years that deserves to remembered (Olivier Hague, for example)?  When you look at the other series that have had online communities come and go, it really is remarkable that SK.net has lasted so long, and I think it would be kind of interesting to have a podcast that can serve as a sort of time capsule of the history of Berserk online.

Also, apologies to Aazealh if you were at BSOM, I don't remember you but I was in high school then so my memory is very fuzzy.

EDIT:  I completely forgot, I was looking up old sites, and saw the old Walter's Sanctuary of Berserk layout.  Good times.

EDIT: Okay, last edit and I'm done.  One more question:  Who were the worst translaters/scanlaters?  Acclimate or The Band of the Hawk?

I'll answer in more detail next time, but I think it'd be neat to have a Berserk game where you didn't play as Guts, and didn't follow events explicitly outlined in the manga. I think the new world really opens the possibilities for that.

So I'm not sure if this has already been touched on in the podcast yet, but someone brought up the legend of "Crocodile Aaz (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php?topic=5664.msg78656#msg78656)" in the chat today. Aaz, can you humor us with the story behind the photo? Was the croc drugged, or did you wrestle it into submission, first? :carcus:

Yep, I'd be one of them ^_^. Were under the impression it was an alligator at first ... but yeah, that picture no longer exists!?

EDIT:

How old is Isidro at this stage of the story?

Isidro at this current age versus Guts at the same age - in versus mode - who do you think will honestly win? Guts is a natural but Isidro's been facing inhuman adversaries or is exposed to a different kind of battle level altogether, so maybe he has a good shot at besting a same-aged Guts?

Great question!  The People deserve the truth!  :serpico:

I'd also like to add a question (even though Grail technically covered it):  Which state did that take place in?  The safe bet would be Florida or Louisiana.  But I'm going to guess Virginia.  For some reason I'm getting a Virginia vibe.

I could be wrong, but I think it must've been somewhere in Europe.

For those who missed seeing the original image, I've painstakingly recreated the footage from memory.

Aaz is the one in the hat.

Ah, you're probably right.  For some reason I thought it happened while he was vacationing in the states.  I might have just assumed it happened here since alligators are so heavily associated with this part of the world though.  I really need to work on my stalking skills.   :ganishka:

I've heard that the original story in the Dreamcast Berserk game is good, but what about the PS2 one? Isn't there a side story with a new apostle? Was that also written by Miura?

Your favorite outdoor sport(s) you'd play growing up? Do you play em these days even if it's once in a while?

Are you guys still doing questions...  :???:

I enjoy the casts when I'm driving to work. Have you done one on Serpico yet?

Wait that's not my question!  :magni:

With these breaks making me think of the series longevity... is there an age you think you'll reach when you feel too old for Berserk? 40? 50? I guess the series might go on for another 10-15 years or so. That would make anyone here that's 30 40 by then. How old is too old to regularly follow Berserk?

They did one on Azan/Serpico/Farnese but not one on him alone. I really liked this one myself.

I wouldn't mind a general podcast on the world of Berserk.  How the two apparent types of magic work.

More theories on the God Hand and Apostles.

The new world of fantasia vs. the way it was before.

The idea that it's a fantasy world in which most everyone is ignorant of the supernatural until recently.

I know that's kinda vague, but this is not your typical fantasy setting.

I got a few questions.

1. What made you decide on the forum's name?

2. What other names were candidates at the time?

3. If you could change the forum's name today which name would you choose? (if Aazealh and Griffith could pick a name that would be cool too)

thanks.  :serpico:

What is the strongest emotional reaction you've had to a movie? It can be mad, sad, glad, or happy

What do you think will be the driving force or motivation for the group to leave Elfhelm and continue the journey to seek out Griffith?

If Miura only wanted to do one more backstory for the rest of Berserk and you were given the opportunity to choose the character, who would you choose and why?

Bonus points awarded to the one who chooses Foss A.K.A The Boss. :puck:

Preliminarily, the next podcast we record (likely Dec. 15) will include a re-read of Volume 1.

Do you guys have any specific questions you'd like us to address?

I’ve been wracking my brain for a good question this week. How about something regarding the Prototype? :guts:

While the Prototype was probably meant as a one-shot, how do you think Miura’s intentions for the series changed between what we see in the Prototype and the first episodes of volume 1? The difference in Guts’s attitude and appearance are pretty notable in particular. What do you think were some of the reasons behind those shifts? And why did he ditch that rad eyepatch?

Sure, I got couple -

Once they're finished with their Berserk movie adaptations, how would you feel about Studio 4°C taking on Gigantomachia next?

And when Gigantomachia's YA run is complete and all six of its chapters will be bound in a tankobon volume, as a bonus would you like for the release to include Miura's two early Sci-Fi manga shorts "Futatabi" and "NOA"?

Anyone have any questions as we head deeper into the Conviction Arc with Vol 17?
Title: Re: Podcast Q&A
Post by: ApostleBob on May 20, 2015, 08:33:05 PM
I have several questions or rather topics that might be interesting to discuss through the Arc –

-Do you think Miura always intended Farnese to join Guts?  Her sadism and glee for burning people alive and even getting off on it is pretty dark.

-Any thoughts on whether “The age of darkness” is what precedes the incarnation of Griffith.  It’s a pretty bleak time with the plague, war, and inquisition.  Perhaps it’s an intentional set up from the God Hand to have a need for a savior.

-I’d love to hear discussion on the vision everyone has of the Hawk.  Zodd and the King have particularly great ones.

-I’d love to hear talk about Godo and Guts last meeting.  It’s some of the most meaningful dialogue in the series in my opinion.

-The historicity of some of these torture techniques would be interesting if it isn't too morbid.

-Mozgus and his torturers have always seemed like some of the most “comic bookish” of the series, being painted in very broad strokes. We don’t see this type of religion again later when we meet the pope or go to Vrittanis. Do you think this was Miura’s showing how religion would behave if it was unknowingly worshiping an evil god?

-Why do you think the church was so concerned with stamping out heretics all of a sudden in refugee camps during an invasion?

-Are the cultists actually flaying priests, or is this the Beherit apostles doing?

-Serpico’s duel with Guts on the cliff is one of my favorite, I’d love to hear your take.

-The specters becoming an oozelike wave of acid is terrifying and spooky.  Some of the imagery is just iconic. Can you go into the interpretation of how and why this is happening?  The volumes are a bit vague about it, but it appears to be the malice and suffering in the area are particularly strong at Albion and the presence of two branded people seems to make it take shape suddenly.  We never see this before or since. What are your thoughts?

-The cultish heretics seem to be worshiping Slan unknowingly.  I find it interesting that the church worships the Idea of Evil unknowingly and the Heretics worship a Godhand.  Not as far apart as they’d seem.

-At what point does a scene become pornographic? The orgy scene in the heretic cave is pretty damn lewd.

-Some talk about Nina would be interesting.  I find her to be a really unlikable character.  Not only is she selfish, cowardly, and constantly crying, but she belongs to a cult that eats boiled babies, tries to murder her boyfriend, and throws others under the bus constantly to save her skin despite having a terminal illness.

- I’d love to hear your thoughts on the interaction that must have occurred off screen between Zodd and Skull Knight

-Rarely is it mentioned that by Griffiths incarnation, this imitation eclipse has killed far more people than the original one that birthed Griffith.  Thousands if not tens of thousands of knights, clergy, and refugees end up either being crushed by the tower or become consumed by the Specter ooze.  I find this even worse than the eclipse, in that it’s innocent families that make up the majority of it.

-Do we think that the Holy Iron Chain Knights are utterly destroyed by the end of this? It seems Azan, Jerome, Serpico and Farnese are all that’s left. The loss of dozens of noble heirs might also be a hit to the land and pave the way for a savior like Griffith.

Do you think the Beherit Apostle's brand exacerbated the situation along with Guts' and Casca's?  It's clear that as an apostle it would not attract spirits to attack it, but I wonder if it didn't have any effect on the situation or not.

Out of all the apostles in the Manga, which one do you find to be the most unique ?

Throughout the series we can see the evolution of Miura's art, is there any specific period in which you liked his art the most ? If so around what volumes ?
