Im training for the special forces, so i do a mix of running (about 8km in 45 minutes so far, soon to move up to 12km runs) swimming which i suck at,and its shameful because Aussies are so much better swimmers then Americans. Weight lifting, leg press about 130kg (290 pounds or so), bench press about 60kg (130-140 pounds) box a boxing bag every now and then.

I try and train at least 4 times a week, i dont have to go to school now so i got plenty of free time, hence why i am always here.

I cannot bench press alot but I have a friend whos 15 who can bench 180-200 while i can only do about 100-120. I am hoping to goin the military in a few years so in may is when i am really going to lay down the exercise.

I train in martial arts four to five times a week, i also do pushups and situps on my own.

Malf, your friend is probably going to damage himself very soon so you know, you should tell him to lighten up, he's still very young, I don't do heavy weight lifting yet and i'm almost 17, you can cause growth defects from lifting heavily at a young age.

once in awhile I also. Run, go to the gym, hit the bag, spar with my friend, do a judo work out (judo pushups/reverse judo pushups, chest roles, leg lifts).

Also abit of balance excercise, I stand on one leg with the knee bent, hold my other knee up as high as I can, and do various kicks slowly in order to limber them up, then quickly to increase my balance.

Dam your friend can bench press 180-200 at age 15. :o
At that age I could only bench press 90-100.  :-[
Well I did try 150 at that age let's just say that if my friend wasn't there when I tried to bench press 150 my ribs would have been broken in half. At least I was able to "lift" it but not lift it back up on the handles.  :-[

My routine:
Monday-Friday: Run 7 miles at 3PM (best completion time is 55 minutes)
Every 2-3 days: Weightlifting and other strength exercises.
Sunday: Total rest to restore energy.
Weight: 130 lbs. Height: 5'6" Age: 15
It is going pretty damn well too...I always love to take the time to brag about my routine :P

My friend is naturally strong. The oldest brother in his family can bench about 300, hes 19. It runs in there family. even the middle child who is 17 can bench 250. I agree with you kart on one at the age of 16 and below should do massive weight lifting. Another tip on losing weight is to stop drinking soda. Alot of people dont realize it but soda and other fake juices cause alot of overweightness. I cut out soda 4 months ago and im looking alot better. I drink about 6-8 bottles of water a day. 3 balanced meals and not just a big meal will help alot. If you skip a meal your body stores the previous meals as fat. Soda is the devil.

Two or three times a week in the gym. I didn't do any cardio prior to last week but I now have to take the train to work and have to walk about three miles a day. That being said, I do have an unhealthy love for regular sodas (none of that diet stuff) and all things chocolates. I must say that my real reason for working out is so I can eat whatever and whenever I want. It makes it worth it.

Oh yeaah, a brag thread!!  ;D
Ok, I practice uechi ryu karate, made it to the 1st dan a few years back, Im a kobudo instructor (weapon fighting), I lift weights but I don t really know your metric system that well (50 kg bench series of 15 , max 120, but that's irrelevant). I also practice tai chi. That's 8 times a week.
I strongly suggest everyone that 's not working out to do so, anything beside heavy weight lifting is fine. Martial arts are especially good since they offer much more than the usual ball/team sports. People have to move and work out, it's in our nature, and without it we're not complete.

And training a lot doesn t make you a killing machine. MArtial artists are usually people that avoid fights. I know many black belts that are excellent athletes but get beaten by street punks nevertheless. A "killing machine" is usually a disturbed person that seeks violence, a true martial artist seeks peace.

I'm off the heavy weights currently and foccussing more on losing weight and rehabilitating my back from a slipped disc and my left shoulder from a dislocation.

So far I bench 260 lbs
right arm curls 85 lbs (due to arm wrestling)
left arm only 65 lbs (different in arm sizes dosn't look so good :p )
The difference in strength also caused my left shoulder to dislocate, because I ignorantly went over the limit for my left when I tried to maximize my right.

Leg press 960 lbs(both legs) which I stopped cause size was getting out of hand and I get muscle cramps alot.

I do abs-about 700 sit ups at a time, but I neglected my back and that caused a slipped disc.

Lesson, don't strain urself or you get injuries like me. Moderation is fine and know ur limits.

Cause of that, I'm just working out moderately with a strict nutrition plan, hoping to lose 40-70 lbs in six months.

I really need to ease the stress on my back-slipped disc. I know it will never be the same, but losing alot of weight will help it for the better.

What good is all the strength one can get when one factor paralizes the person with chronic pain?

The max weight you should lose within 6 months is about 48 lbs. Anything more than 2 pounds a week is dangerous to your health.

Losing all the weight can be dangerous. But some do better with a few less pounds in a specifc region. (Above shoulders). Lop.

My exercise is one word, Lifting. Lift the spoon, lift the remote, lift my ass up and go to other couch, etc. yes, i know it is unvigorating. (No I am not joking, but it is kind of a lame funny)

I train for endurance over anaerobic excercise, people who do large weights at the gym of only 2-5 reps will not get fit easily.
I always do at least 12-15, consequently that along with general training for endurance I am unable to put on bearly any weight and have weighed around 65kg for 2 years.

Well, I've already started and am losing about 4 pnds every week. Never saw the danger with what I'm doing currently.

I drink about 4 letres of water a day and for myself, that doesn't leave much room for big meals. That's how I'm generally losing the weight. I'm also taking multi vitamins.

The diet I'm on is sort of a semi advance atkins.
1st 2 weeks was detox - I only had protien, water and vitamins, 0 carbs, so no veggies, but I could have little amount of fats.

That allows my body to depend on fats instead of carbohydrates.

All the while I did light weights, many reps during that period.

After the 2 week period, I eat lots of protein but am alowed to eat minimal 'simple carbs' like veggies and certain fruits. I still drink alot of water.
I eat those little carbs for the sake of giving me enough energy for working out with medium weights. During working out, I totally burn of the carbs, so when my muscles are in the process of healing, my body uses my body fat, instead of carbs to fuel the process of healing.

That's how I lose weight. (with cardio excersises you only burn significant amount of fat/carbs during the excersise)

In time(which I'm not at yet) when I lose enough fat, my body would have reached maximum carb intake, meaning that the carbs I eat would be enough to fuel my body for both working out and healing. At that time, I move to heavy weights, where the amount of fuel I would need to heal is considerably higher, so my body would again use my body fat... until my ideal weight.

Then I can just stay with medium or light weights.

I know it may sound insane, but I'm crazy enough to go on this thing.

yes a little carbs are good for you, i think no carbs isnt good for you  becuase you need energy and it was 20oz bottles like the size of a bottle of coke or something, the ones you get in the vending machines, thats size bottle of water

That is unhealthy. Atkins diet is a bunch of bullshit and is very unsafe in the long scheme of things. You need carbohydrates to stay healthy, and people only get fat because they are so lazy. Also, weightlifting will not cause you to lose fat. Sure, stronger muscles burn calories more BUT when your muscles heal it is not using fat, it is using the protein you consume.
What you need to do is aerobics/anaerobics, and get lots of carbs to burn for those, and if you do aerobics for a long time, like say a full hour every day, you will burn off all the carbs you consumed and start buring fat. The way you are losing weight right now is idiotic and unsafe.

I agree atkins is a buncha crap. I Think the starter of atkins just died. To lose weight go on long walks, some jogs, and hikes to burn off fat. When one goes to the gym he should do cardio and some weight lifting.
Title: Re:Do you guys work out?
Post by: Kart on March 10, 2004, 02:26:27 AM
Atkins can help in short bursts, it's like suprising your body by raping it with a katana (note i had a very bad day there will be lots of violence in this post) slashing and ripping at your bodys way of production, so you're bodys like "WTF! WHORE WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!" and it thinks you arn't getting enough of what you need so it burns body fat to keep you running, but then your body gets used to it and changes the way it functions and goes "FUCK CHU I WIN" and you begin feeling fine, maybe even better but really your body just changed and isn't running the same way which can be dangerous, herion makes you feel good but it isn't good for you.

It's ok to do it in a burst, suprise your body get a few lbs off, or even for awhile if you really need to ditch some weight, but don't live on it, otherwise it probably can be dangerous.

You seem to know exactly what you are doing bu like theblakeman i dont agree with that much. You want to lose weight, run or do long endurence training, you wont need to stick with just protein, you can eat almost all you want and lose weight.

Long distance running is probably the best thing for it, when you get used to doing more then 4km  regually you will lose weight for sure.
My uncle weighed 115kg (something like 250 pounds) got into running until he could do 8km, then 12km runs regually and he lost at least 25kg. With long endurence you get fit and burn a fucking lot of calories, its the way to go. i eat alot of fatty food and sweets along with healthy food, all in large doses and drink specialized  protein/carb drink made to help put on weight, so far no luck, most of the reason would be because i have choose endurence over just strength, but being fit is more important to your health anyways.

Perhaps some read me wrong... I've completed the 2 weeks detox and am taking in carbs at this point, but for the sake of providing energy for working out.

Quote
Sure, stronger muscles burn calories more BUT when your muscles heal it is not using fat, it is using the protein you consume.

Protien is the 'building materials,' used, but the body needs energy from either fats or carbs to fuel the actual process of 'rebuilding/healing'.

In odd days, I do some cardio. Perhaps do 2 hrs on the stairmaster or run 12k or so forth.

We're so damn used to the nonmetric system and to be honest, I wish we weren't. Metric is so easy and much more accurate. We do have grocery products ( haha) that use litres and kgs occasionally, but I always thought the US was pretty backwards. I had a hell of a time when I was in Europe with calculations.

It is like most systems. It is what our businesses use because the older people that own them know how to use it. So they teach it to us and we buy their product in the system were familiar with. We could however start to put both on every product we sell (including weight scales) and that would help alleviate the problem. Me, I would have to use a conversion chart for the metric syatem and walk around with a calculator.

Well, if you're gonna reduce it to a brag thread...

Pretty much what I was going to say, jeesus. Okays, I work out 3 times a week for upper body. Used to do 5 days a week (2 for lower body) but because my knees are kinda shitty, and I resprained my left ankle, I haven't done regular lower body workout in like a year or more, heh. On top of that, my lower body is pretty built because of a lifetime of soccer. Anyway

OMGOMGOMGBENCH PRESS! The most overrated piece of shit ever. For some reason its considered the ultimate test of strength. Lame. Anyway again:

Bench is 3x10 of 205. I've been stuck on this thing forever, due to sickness, injury, etc. I'll get up to 3x10, and then i get sick or something, and have to go back to a struggling 3x8, etc.

Other than that, I try to play soccer during spring, which naturally involves running. My best 1mile time is 5.36 I believe, however this was also my senior year in high school when I was in the best cardio shape of my life. All I know is that my soccer game on wednesday (only 20min halfs) is gonna get me VERY winded. Oof.

I used to run every day at noon for the hell of it, but when I moved to Santa Cruz it was too cold for my liking, so I quit. I don't think I'll seriously run again until I move back to Southern California where I can feel the heat. So, now I'm strictly on the ever faithful girlfriend diet/exercise plan. Keeps me fit.

Time to go drink rum and eat Rugers!

P.S. I assume I can bench press several kilotongrams or whatever you metric system freaks call it. I once juggled a Buick... with my teeth.

I now I'm strictly on the ever faithful girlfriend diet/exercise plan. Keeps me fit.

Ya i used to be that lucky and have that kind of exercise plan.   :P But now i am all alone and forced to run and do yoga to relieve tension when i really get "frustrated"  :o.

Either way it's all good. Yoga keeps me flexible and ready for my next exercise partner ;)

I beat other students and my finace up with a shinai on a weekly basis.  Best couple therapy ever invented.   ;D  There isn't any running in Kendo, but it does work you cardiovascularly.  And the added bonus of stress relief just can't be beat.

LC: What fitness competition are you doing?
12% is pretty much fatless for women...that would be pretty amazing.  What kind of training will you be doing in the next few months?

Last time I checked, I was in the low 20%s and I think I'm on the borderline of being too thin.

25% is considered the normal body fat of most women. It's not really healthy to get down below 15% because then the chance of amenorrhea sets in...you lose your menstrual cycle, and then calcium loss occurs in the bone. If you ever see long distance runners, a lot of them look really drawn and ultrathin, because they have incredibly low body fat.

The contest is a figure contest...so there's no gymnastics or athletic ability onstage. I'd have to return to gymnastics and choreographed dance routines.

The fitness contest is two part: bathing suit ( two piece and one piece) presentation, and a rigorous two minute performance on the stage ( this sounds easier than it really is) to demonstrate flexibility, grace, atheticism, and balance.

The figure contest is just bathing suit, but you are judged on the symmetry of your body, muscle definition ( each muscle has to stand out...not like Ms Olympia or anything, but it has to be visible and toned), stage presence, and poise.  In any case a  contestant has to be in top shape to pose. A lot of the same girls who do the fitness also enter figure.

It's called LOL the Ms. Wild West Nevada.

2 minutes is a long time to have to perform.

The reason I ask is because a good girlfriend of mine was the silver medalist in last year's Miss Fitness USA. I thought you might be in the same competition. It was even televised on ESPN2.

I watched her through the training process. I was exhausted just listening to her daily routine.

Good luck to you!  You must tell us how you do.
How exciting!

I lift at 24 hour fitness.

Bench: 10 x 155 lbs, 8 x 175, 5 x 195

I don't know about you guys, but whenever I go the gym, I see most guys benching over 200 lbs and I feel weak.  :-\

And you guys probably don't care cuz I'm new here...
Title: Re:Do you guys work out?
Post by: Trench on May 01, 2004, 08:04:37 PM
I max out at 315 on the bench. Max meaning 1 rep.  I usually stick to 225, 235, 245, then 255.  This is on the flat of course.   Lately  I've been working with Dumbells.  Its alot better.  Stay off the flat bench and do crazy amounts of incline dumbell presses.  You'll see results in a few weeks. ;)
I work one body part per day, and hit the gym 5 times a week, and cardio twice.  I hate running! :P  GOLD GYM PWNS! ;D

I lift monday through friday and take saturday and sunday off for recovery days.  The key to getting big/bigger quick is to lift twice a day, at least 6 hours apart.  The trick, lifting only one muscle group a day.  And you really gotta kick your body's ass when you're training.  But doing this kind of training you need to work out 6 days a week and have one day for rest.

Day 1: Chest
Day 2: Back
Day 3: Legs (quads, hamstrings, calfs)
Day 4: Shoulders (delts, traps)
Day 5: Triceps
Day 6: Biceps
Day 7: Rest, but don't neglect your diet

In one sitting(eating) the body can only digest 40-50 grams of protien every 1.5 hours.  Any more and it just gets wasted.  For a diet, forget those three big meals and focus on 6 smaller meals.  Don't eat vegetables before 4PM.  They work best for the body after that point.  And don't eat fruit after 4PM.  The sugar is more likely to be stored as fat instead of being burned off.  To get into shape you need motivation and dedication.  Training partner who's on your level or close to it wouldn't hurt either.

Can you tell that I want to be a personal trainer?

For those of you who truely want to get into shape I suggest checking this site out.  You wont regret it.

I am trying to put on weight so I do little methods that would help me store fat, like eating carbs before you go to sleep that is said to be responsible for storing fat in your body while you sleep which would not be good for people who are trying to lose weight but its all good to me.

Up until recently I had always believed that eating carbs or protein before training would benefit you, though that is the case for carbs, protein should only be taken after training for recovery and body growth, otherwise your body may get used to having it in your system while you are training. If that happens and you dont have a protein amount in your system your body doesnt like that at all and weaken you. I doubt anything terrible would come from this but thats enough to keep me away from it until afterwards.

I remember this thread, I voted that i was too lazy. But in all actuality, I'm very busy but I find time here and there to do different things. I use a heavy bag, for aggression, and weights, when I have time.

However, I do one thing that I am sure is not healthy but to make sure I thought I'd ask. I use a bookbag with all my books for college in it and an additional 30 lbs. of extra weights I put in it (to make sure it doesn't go anywhere without me) nearly every day. And everyday, I wear this bookbag at least an hour a day and it weighs around 60-70 lbs. (I have more stuff other than books and weights. Stuff like supplies, trinkets, etc.). I actually weighed it once at about 64. So what do you think this will do to me in the long run?

If you have or get a bad lower back then get one of those machines where you hang upside down and slowly tilt yourself up and down for a while, does wonders for a sore lower back and keeps it strong.

I don't trust protein.. you only get artificial muscles and if you stop your training for too long, your muscles you worked for a long time are gone too easily...

Title: Re:Do you guys work out?
Post by: dwarfkicker on May 02, 2004, 06:38:27 PM
I agree, the natural way is better.  But for those of us who don't get enough protein in one day then shakes are all good.  FYI to maintain what you have you need to get your weight in grams of protein a day.  If you weigh 165 pounds then you should take in 165 grams of protein a day.  To actually build muscle to get bigger and not maintain then you need to take your desired weight in grams.  So if you want to weigh 225 pounds then you need to take in 225 grams of protein a day.

It's nice to see other people who are as passionate about bodybuilding as much as I am.

Ok that's what I thought you were talking about but I didn't want to make an ass out of my self if I was wrong.  To answer your question, no.  The fluids are made up of a protein that your body creates.  The protein that builds muscle is found in the food we eat.

Natural protein is alot better but you have to eat quite a bit to get the 40-50 grams you need every sitting.  I eat chicken breast and brocolli for lunch almost everyday, or I just slam a couple cans of Tuna, but I still suppliment with Shakes.  Its just more convienient. Thats the purpose.  As for stopping with the workout regiment, I had to quit for four months from working out for personal reasons, but I didn't lose much muscle mass doing it.  You just need to keep active.

I think I was 17-18 @ the time... these Mormons used to come to my house... I really didnt believe in their religon... but they were good guys... I guess u should say I pitty them. (Mormons reeeeaaaalllly have it hard man).  Anyways, they kept coming and coming... getting a little anoyed. Dont ever try to push people to get involved in something they dont want period..

Soooo... one day they came... I had a TV, had them sit in front of it (when Mormons are in missions... they are NOT allowed to watch television... except for Disney... YESS its true) so I told them I would be right back... poped a nice porn video that I had...I think it was called "Ass Worship"... anyways... I grabed the remote and vvvuuaaalllaaaa... They never came back...

I did the same thing with Evanglists (I really dont know how to say it in english)... but I used "Faces of Death"... instead of porn, in respect for the old lady...

p.s. I respect every religion their is.... no offense

God I am trying to imagine the expression on some of the mormons faces I know if they started seeing something like that suddenly in front of them. The moment would be priceless im sure, living around them for 18 years would teach you that much and especially when your father becomes bishop of the nearby mormon church. :P

Yeah, I was raised a mormon for the first 14 years of my life, and I still cant figure out how people come to terms with that way of life for themselves so I suppose it is admirable but I find it hard respect. I was simply one because I knew nothing else up until then, not because I decided to live that way myself.

Eating well is a part of the training, there's a lot of people eating junk food and taking suppliment to get "bigger". I know 2 or 3 guys at the gym who take supplement and eat like idiots, no wonders why they lose their mass when they stop for a couple of weeks..

NOw Junk food is another matter all together.  You'll never build muscle right that way

Well... when you are "cool" like the guys i'm talking about.. it doesn't matter :) you are the strongest of the gym because you benchpress like an asshole, too much weight and you do only 2-3 repetitions. When you are not pushing the right way you can lift a lot more weight.. i guess you are not one of those guys..
Weight lifting look simple but it's not...

And its annoying to see people do it the wrong way or pathetically. You see people do heavy weights but either dodgy or really quickly, people should learn its not about trying to lift heavy weights, I really take my time when I am doing reps I take them rather slowly; its recommended that you bring them up without too much speed and bring them down twice as slow, as when you are bringing the weights down it is at least as important as pulling them up.

Something interesting I heard recently essential for muscle growth is failure at the very end. In the past I didnt put much into the last rep you know you cant pull up after however many but failure is the most important part of the whole part for muscle growth. I have been told that when you push it until you have absolutely nothing left, even if you fail to finish the rep you muscles essentially panic when put under that much stress and that is the part that really forces them to grow. When I first pushed to the point that I had nothing left at all I could feel the difference.

Yeh, I personally think its stupid to do anything less than 5 reps. I don't think maxing out is that important either. Reps are whats important. I don't know what your gym is like, but there are a lot of people that just stand around at mine, and talk really loud about all the weight they lift so everyone can hear, and grunt like dumbasses on every rep. I find it really annoying when I'm waiting for something and they spend 2 minutes inbetween sets and then do 3 reps. In the same respect, I think its stupid to do say 30 reps with little weight. I try to finish in less than an hour, there is no reason to do so much in one day, unless you do it everyday I guess. There are A LOT of people who do steroids too, mostly frat guys.

It's all in how you train.  Light weight and high reps is for toning.  Heavy weight with less weight is for building.  My set count is four.  My reps for those sets are usually 10/8/6/4.  Sometimes 12/10/8/6.

What is important is to "feel the burn" when you are lifting weight. I think the max rep should be 20, because it always depend on what kind of results you want. 20 rep is when you want to work your muscles endurence, it doesn't help to get more muscular mass. It's like dwarfkicker explained..

There is a lot of people at the university's gym like those you described Aho411, they just want to show off.. especially when there's a chick doing her step or bike :P

I lift extremly heavy with low reps.  It for the mass.  Now Drop sets and shit like that, thats perfect for getting the rips u want.  Lighter weight and higher repetitions.

NOw with shoulders, u should never go too heavy.  Its too dangerous and if you injure it, you'll be out for a long time! :-\

Sparnage, lifting heavy weights at a fast pace is called explosive movements or explosive training.  Its purpose it to hit the tiny muscle fibers that are interwoven with the larger ones.  Explosive training hits these fibers better than going through the regular motions.

Neh, I swim and Play Water Polo (which includes three days a week in the gym) in addition to taking Brazilian Ju-Jitsu so right now I'm in pretty good shape.

I'm a mixed martial artist, though my grappling experience is still pretty low. Also did weights for the past year, but switched to a BJJ warmup as my main exercise now, cos it kicked my ass :P
