Title: Berserk Tattoo
Post by: PsychoJavexx on December 23, 2003, 01:53:33 PM
I need a good picture of the Brand to take to the tattoo place.  I want one that shows exactly what it looks like, without any distortion, and about how big it should be on my body.

Whoa!  Thank you soooo much!!

One more thing...  where should I get it, and what color?  Black, or red, or what?

I'd get it on your neck ala Guts, and leave it the standard ink color.

do you plan on gettting it on the right side of your neck?

I don't know, I think black or a really dark red would be good, but that's something you should probably discuss with the tattoo artist, they can give you much better advice on this stuff.

get your neck tatooed
(thats the place where i still got some free space left maybe thats why i recommend it  :-\)

place between your thumb and your trigger finger would be awesome too.
shoulder or upper arm are gay, keep that in mind.
these spaces are allocated for full sleeves or big pics for your back

If you really want it to look real, you should brand yourself like they do with cows.. I thinks it's the best way your "brand" can look real. You'll also look more like a though guy than if you only get a tattoo of the brand..

    Be courageous ! :P

I'm bleeching a stripe of my hair since 3-4 years and fate have dicided that Guts get a white spot in his hair... and there's the video game named XIII that the main character have a white stipe just like mine.. i'm a bit confused with my identity now..  :P   (you can see 3 pic of me in the shootin the breeze section, picture thread page 10-11, we can see it on only 2 pictures and it's not that clear..)

I like so much Guts that i'll cut my harm, blow one of my  eyes, get scars all over my body (especially the nose) and get the brand :p (do i have to mention that i'm just kidding ?)

Title: Re:Tattoo of the Brand
Post by: KazigluBey on June 25, 2004, 10:44:27 PM
Oh yes I'm so closed minded (a cliche that's been used to death) because I think getting a comic book tattoo is dumb. There are plenty of works of art whether they be paintings, literature, music etc. that I enjoy and care about on a "deeper" level, but getting a tattoo representing them doesn't really seem to me to make my connection with them any greater.

Tattoos have become such a mainstream thing that they seem to have lost most of their impact, and I partially attribute this to people getting trivial pieces influenced by pop culture.

Getting a Berserk tattoo because you are obsessed with the manga/anime is something a teenager would typically do, more spur of the moment than anything.

I plan on getting more tattoos, at least half sleeves and maybe a back piece, and I plan to put a lot of effort into them, not just so they look "cool" or so I can show them off to everyone. Like I said, if I can't design it myself and make it completely unique and embedded with my own beliefs/spirituality then it's utterly worthless and I will never put it on my body.

To me tattoos are supposed to represent a part of you, and what you are about on a deeper level (spiritual or whatever), and I really don't get a sense of this when I see peope covered from head to toe with pictures that portray their hobbies, etc. It might be attractive strictly from an artistic standpoint but it seems devoid of real meaning.

This is my opinion, don't try to make it anything more than that.

No, that is just an excuse for you not to engage in any form of debate.  If you don't like negativity go bury your head in the sand.  Perhaps you don't like dealing with reality hmm?

You'll have to try a lot harder than that if you want to push my buttons.   ;)

BTW - If you consider a dissenting opinion to be negativity, then why are you engaging in discussion on a message board in the first place? I mean do you really expect everyone on here to share identical opinions because our common ground happens to be the enjoyment of Berserk?

That would truly make for a lame message board if this were the case.  ;D

If I were to get a berserk tatoo then I wouldn't know what to get from it. I'd prolly rater a tatoo of Macross over one of Berserk because Macross has been with me since I was a lad. A tatoo of the brand would be good If I were a bit more Jacked out, and if it were originally my own idea.
Possible tatoo ideas for me:
Macross logo on my Back
Japanese Kanji for "Shin" or "Konran Oarashi" on my upper right back

anything else I wouldn't be able to guess now.

Hey everyone, I'm a longtime lurker, first time poster. I never really had much to say until now. I got a tattoo of the brand a few months ago...and here it is.

Not many people that I know would understand putting something ugly like this on my skin permanently. However, to me, it symbolizes a lot of what went on in my life, and what will in the future. It's got a lot deeper meaning than "Just some anime/manga tattoo cos you love the series." I know none of you asked for the story behind it, but I did it anyway :)

And I don't regret getting it.

Sorry if this is a little off topic but; my neighbor who is in his 30's and has no idea what Berserk of manga or anime is, but for as long as i have known him he has had a natural white stylish streak in his hair exactly like Guts, (infact they look simular with his facial structure and all). It's awsome and i wish i had a picture to show.

As for a tattoo, i wish to get one, nothing to big maybe just a brand because i don't want to cover up my body

If your philosophy was actually the way people thought, then there would be no tattoos in the world at all.. just people with marker drawn all over them.

My friend recently got his first tattoo.. and now he's all obsessed with tattooing and is offering to pay for me to get one. So I'm going to get the brand tattoed on me. I'm not quite sure where I want it.. I think I might get it on the right side of my upper back.. just to be original. Plus that way it'll be visibal when I'm wearing a wife beater.

I'm not quite sure how I want it to be.. I definatly want it to be bold.. so it doesn't look like I just drew it with a pen. I want it to really stand out. Size-wise I think I'll get it a tiny bit bigger then they are in berserk.. not too much bigger though. Color will be black. As far as shading or outlining or any other details go I still havn't decided.. but I suppose I should hurry up since he wants to take me for it like next week.

I'll post pictures of it as soon as I can.

I wouldn't get one.  If I can't create a tattoo from scratch that nobody else could possibly have then it's not worth getting.

word.

But mticknight the tattoos are looking real.

I'm thinking about the brand too, but I think I'm just gonna make my own..

Yeh mine is black and it is a bit bigger than guts's. I just got it to look like his, it has no other details, but ive seen some with borders and stuff and they looked really cool too.Goodluck with it and dont worry it dosen't hurt as bad as some people make out...it does hurt but is bearable :) Ill put a picture up soon of mine :)

Yeah I might get a border but I'm really not sure if I should.. or what color the border should be. I think I'm going to get it shaded though.. so it looks like its actually sunken into my skin.

Okay I've just decided to get this brand as my first tattoo...  So I can get the feeling of it, you know, before getting something big and fancy...

but yea, what do I do first?  Do I bring a pic of it to the shop or what?  thanks in advance.

Yeah just find a picture of the brand that's as close to what you want as possible. If the picture isn't exactly what you want (since there are quite a few different variations of the brand) just describe to him what you want different about it.. tattoo artists are easy to communicate your ideas with.
This is the image I'm going to bring I think.. I'll just tell him that I want it black and solid instead of red and full of the holes n stuff.. and no dripping blood.

EDIT:
Okay now I need some people's opinions. I found this picture of the brand:

and I really like it. Should I go with this one or the first one? Keep in mind the the first one would be solid and more symmetrical then it is pictured. It also wouldn't have the blood.

I am going to laugh when I walk down the street and see an entire convention of hambeasts with the ><> symbol branded on their necks.

Well, I might not even remember by then since I dont see Berserk conventions becoming as popular as even, say, furry conventions.  My god.

Speaking of which, how long do you think Miura integrates a shitty cat-girl nekojin into his comic?  (I am kidding guys! Miura is doing a great job, we just need to lighten up about this stuff though, some people get all defensive about Berserk, as if it's their religion.  Well... it's good, but not good enough to make a religion based on.  Then again, L. Ron Hubbard made a religion based on his shitty BATTLEFIELD FECES book)  Tangeant.  Misuse of parantheses.  Oh well.  Here's an elipsis...

im gettin branded soon. gonna have a big one on my arm. Not cos im a huge berserk fan but i like symbols and the brand is a cool lookin one like the homunculus tat from FMA.

also i kinda agree with the whole "tattoos represent spirituality and yourself" thing, a mate of mine wants totally original tats but thing is im a shallow pop culture junkie whore....nah but really its not a spiritual thing for me its a way of life thing for me.

How much did the tattoo cost?  And how time consuming?
I'm thinking of getting the brand on the back of my neck, but have one issue. I heard that if the tatooist screws up, he/she can hit a nerve and mess you up really bad. So I'm not really sure anymore.
Then get it just to the left, or just to the right of the spinal column.  It doesn't seem to dangerous since the needles don't go that deep.  I know someone who is fine after having the back of their neck pierced.  But they had to take out the piercing recently because managment at work didn't approve of it.

is this right? ???

Berserk in katakana is written ベルセルク. What's on the AOW boxes is correct in that regard. If you want it aligned vertically, well you can just do it yourself, it's not very complicated.

GREAT! Ive seen it that way, but just wasn't sure.  do you have any suggestions for me as far as creating the actual text on my computer? do i need to download/buy some software or is there a website with some resources for me? anything u got, even a thread to direct me at would be helpful.

Well, the standard Windows IME is good enough if you just want to type in Japanese on your computer. Otherwise, as far as the stylized fonts (http://www.younganimal.com/berserk/img/index_01.gif) commonly used for Berserk go, you'd be better off just using Photoshop or another image editor to make it look like you want, basing yourself on existing stuff (like a scan of an AOW box).

On the front of the neck exactly where Allen Iverson has his Chinese or Japanese character.  for some reason i cant see some of the pictures posted here. i would like to see some of them so i can get an idea of how it looks like on skin.

I actually found this website one night when I was searching around online to see if anyone besides me was crazy enough to get the brand(or anything Berserk related) tattooed on them.  I was pretty surprised to see a number of people here with a brand tattoo, but that's awesome.  That was early this summer when I decided that's what I wanted for my first tattoo, and it's almost time for me to get it.  My friend from the Marines wanted to get another tattoo when he got back from deployment, so he suggested we both go when he was back on leave.  I'll be bringing in the design later this week, and then scheduling an appointment for the first week of November.  I'll be sure to post some pics after it's done.  It's going to be a straight-outlined, more bold picture of the brand, and it'll be on my left forearm.  Just wanted to say that, and I really like the work you guys have had done.  Looking forward to seeing more of it in the future.

Personally only reason i wanted it on my neck was cause thats where guts has his and he is my favorite character of the series.  Been a big debate in my head for some years now.  I use to want tattoo's as a kid but now that im older just not as facinating :)

Hello, I'm new to this board, but I've been on a berserk trip for around 5-6 years.  About a year and a half back, prolly closer to 2 years.  I found a place while i was living in Truro and working in Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada).  I started look for a place where i could get my self branded.  I took a look around 13 - 14 places in Halifax alone and more then 20 around NS.  I found only one place to do it.

I can get a picture of my Mark of Sacrifice brand, but i just have to wait until tomorrow.  Now i know people are going to ask did i do it myself, or how did i get it done.  First off, the above paragraph should tell yeah i didn't do it myself,  :guts:.

Now on to how its done.  They don't use a piece of iron and just do it in on huge jab.  The brand with is around 3 inches tall and about an inch and a half wide took 5 minutes it do.  They use something that almost works like an arc welder.  Its a pen with basically a blue spark on the end.  They trace it on to your neck with a water transfer, then they get to branding.  The tattoo parlor i was in had 5 or 6 sticks of incense lit just to cover the smell of burning skin.  It stinks bad, i had to drive an hour home with my windows down.  Another thing about it is, it hurts like hell.  And up on the neck is one of the more sensitive spots on your body as there isn't as much muscle/fatty tissue to really give yeah much padding.   So after its done it not to bad, but 2-3 days later, you can hardly move or turn your head/neck.  It took around 3-4 weeks to heal.

I also have a second brand on my right forearm.  It again was done at the same tattoo parlor by the same women who did it before.  This one wasn't as bad.  Less painful and a lot faster.  Took around 2-3 weeks to heal, and i had full use of my forearm the whole time.  I just had to be careful how i slept.  The second one i got is of Khorne, the Blood God, from warhammer/ warhammer 40 K.

I know i kinda rambled off on a long strip their, and i hope to have pictures either really late tonight or really early tomorrow.  And thank you guys for taking the time to read this post.  And thanks for having me at this wonderful board.

Hey there Meathook, welcome! :guts:

I've heard about real branding of people (not related to Berserk), even saw a few documentaries on it actually, but that was mostly in California. Girls getting branded on their butts, stuff like that. I can't say I'm a fan of the idea in general, but as far as the Berserk brand goes I'd say it's the best option if someone is going to have it done at all.

Thanks for having me here.  I've been a long time lurker.  Your not the first person to call me crazy for getting branded.  And i wanted to get a third.  I want to get it done on my left forearm.  But I'm not sure what I should get.  I know it can't be too crazy detailed.  but it can be pretty large.  I would like to get another berserk related brand.

As i said.  I got a yearnin' for some burnin'!

Thanks.  Actually this board is what made me get those brands.  Well the first one at least.  I seen enough threads on here to say "has anyone gotten a a tattoo/brand of the mark of sacrifice."  Seen alot of people with tattoos.  So, i was like hey lets rock and roll.

Yeah I've had that brand for 2 years now.  It's starting to heal a bit.  I might have to get re branded sometime.

Still looking for more berserk related toastin'.  Keep em coming!

Boys-Get it on your neck like Guts

Girls-Get it on your boobs like Casca

Whoever said that got it right the first time.

If you don't want to try the forearm, go for right between the eyebrows like Corkus, now THAT would be daring.

My friend was considering getting it done on the palm of his hand like Juedo, but the artist said that the skin there is too thick for the needle machine thing to puncture.. and that he would have to do it all by hand.. which would've hurt like a bitch and taken forever. So he got it in the center of his chest instead.

I was debating on getting it branded on me asked my sister and talked aobut it (she's a cosmatologist and a tattoo artist).  But.... after seeing the branded pictures i dont think ill do this.  Not that its not cool and all but it just dont stand out enough for me i like the detail a tattoo can put into it instead of just a scar that will heal over time and have to be redone possibly.

Still debating on weather to get it done though... but who can save the money so many things to buy :D lol

Did Pippin get it on his arm? Yes, he did get it on his hand, but as that one guy said, the skin on the hand is too thick, and it would hurt/damage to pierce the skin. So I don't think anyone would want that.  :judo: OUCH

I dunno. I'd love to get a brand tattoo just because I love Berserk and it would be neat, but then thinking to when I'm 80 and it looks like a shrinkled prune.. It'd also be hard explaining to people what it meant, haha.

If I were to get a brand tattoo though, I'd probably get it on my ankle :)

oh yep, sorry, it was his left. That would really suck getting the brand on your hand (well it would suck getting branded, period) but the hand and one other area are probably the places I would hate to get it the most.

So you plan on not looking like a prune yourself when your 80?

Well I'll be getting mine sometime this summer, just debating whether or not to get the brand with a little bit of frayed skin drawn in or not.  But then again I can always add it later.

Have you ever seen tattoo's on really old people? I know I will probably become a prune myself when I reach that age, but the last thing I would want would be a saggy blob of color which looks like fermented skin drooping off me... My grandfather is 89, was a marine and has a handfull of tattoo's, and they are not very pretty any more.. You can't even distinguish what they once were.  :guts:

I wanted it on my neck, but they *highly* advised against it since the layers of skin were few/thin there, and there would be a lot of movement there so the stuff they put on wouldn't have been able to sit for as long as it needed to. Then they said that the palm/bottom of the foot was the best place since the skin was so think and sheded slowly, so of course I had to go with that  :badbone:

Though I keep getting the feeling that something is going to run up behind me and bite my arm off >_>;;

I actually considered getting a Brand tattoo immediately upon understanding it. However, like I was telling my friends "I'd go out on a whim and say I'm far from the first to realize this". I see a lot of people (Aazealh even) who go for the neck. I'll probably go for the shoulder or chest now since I wanted to divert from just being "guts" (such as how Judeau received his on the painful hands and Casca her breast)

As far as shriveling skin goes, this is actually why I -do- consider the brand. Its not like an elaborate naked woman carved into your back that will look like your mother when you reach her age. Besides, I'd go on a whim again and say 99% of the people who do come across it (for anyone) have no idea what the hell it is anyways, that's not going to change when the lines start crossing each other (and since its not too elaborate, it wouldn't be that big of a bitch to remove when compared to foot long tats). However, I'm personally considering a different type of design, still the brand and all, but I don't know if I simply want a black marking, probably go with a different color scheme if I do.

I was thinking of getting one with a little trickle of blood oozing out of the bottom, as if it was reacting to an apostle or other baddie...not quite sure about the neck...thinking maybe somewhere a little more discreet, like my shoulder blade.  I've also considered getting myself branded to make it look as close as possible to the 'real deal'...not quite sure what my course of action will be.  If I did actually choose to physically brand myself then I would probably get the blood trickle tattooed on.  Has anyone done this already?

I live in a college town and it seems tattoos are the norm these days, which makes me feel like a proud freak.  That is, I don't have a tattoo...yet.  If I do get one it will be the brand or brand-related...

side note: I've trolled these forums as a guest for over a year now.  I saw Berserk two years ago and I find it to be the most creative story ever told...just got #12 from DH as well...and enjoy the manga even more...

Most likely I'll be getting my Brand tattoo tomorrow. I'm on the fence about where to get it, I know I should be a true fan an get it on my neck but for me thats kind of big so I'm thinking left shoulder, still not sure though. Also there's some other ideas I wanted to eventually do, like get the Berserk logo in this cool calligraphy across my back,
(http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5853/brand04ai7.gif) and this SK pic on my other shoulder
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6895/berserkpetitereallyfb1.jpg)
Although just his sword with the vines might be cool. The Beherit might be cool too somewhere
(http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4356/behelitsmallyy6.jpg) But maybe when it's screaming and crying blood.  Also the Japanese lettering would be cool going down the arm, then again so many people do that so I probably won't do it. (http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/6151/berserktitlesmallxi1.jpg)

This is another thing that would be cool too

Well whatever I do I'll post a pic as soon as I can.

Do you even know what this means? It's just the subtitle of the animated series. It has no relation to Berserk save for that (well, the two kanji on the left are the title of episode 001 as well).

I'd be wary of that and definately speak with a tattooist. I have my arm and left side of my body tattooed and my guy explained that inking over scarred tissue is a hit and miss thing. We avoided the scar from my TB innoculation jab just in case it didn't take. You might find that you need several sessions to get it properly coloured though - I think it depends on your body.

Also red ink naturally fades faster than black but on scarred tissue? Who knows? Anyway, I'd double check about tattooing over scarred tissue (especially branded skin) before you go get yourself branded :)

(Like everyone) I was thinking about this too, it's just that after having a Final Fantasy tatoo on my shoulder blade i don't think I should. I kinda regret getting a tatoo even though I still like FF very much, I know I'm gonna get over it one day (when I'm like 40 or so maybe)... So I don't think I'm getting more tatoos.

I had ( I assume ) a really good idea for a tattoo. I think I'd be the first person to get such a tattoo so far as I've seen. However I don't know if its that great of an idea and if I mention it someone might go and steal the idea. Hehe. I'll just say it's not the brand. That's a good idea but its overdone and well it'd be harder to explain then what I have in mind. I'd be getting something probably on my arm and it would be Berserk related of course but not the title or the brand.

You know what....screw it. The idea was to get the DS on my arm about maybe 6 inchs? Not too big not too small. Eh?

LOL sure, tattoo a giant phallic symbol on your arm. Hey, it's a cool idea, but you don't want to get stuck with something that'll backfire like that.
I do love the skull one, you really can't go wrong. It's an amazing design and even if it had nothing to do with Berserk it's still awesome.

Nice, though a little too simplified for my tastes (not that the original could be perfectly reproduced of course). It also looks a bit disproportioned in the picture, I hope it's just the angle.

LOL sure, tattoo a giant phallic symbol on your arm.

With this kind of logic, what in the world isn't a phallic symbol or the representation of a vagina to some extent? It's just a big sword, and I doubt he'll get shit for it assuming people won't mind tattoos in the first place.

I big tattoo of Caksa's tits wouldn't be phallic. And in no way is the skull phallic.
I'm just pointing out how it could backfire, doesn't mean he shouldn't do it. I mean getting a tattoo at all is bad enough, I'm not going to try to talk him out of it.

I take it you mean "Casca". Anyway, squint your eyes and you'll see a vulva or too in the skull tattoo (those eyes look suspicious, just like Sauron's!). Really, when going down that road the only limit is the extent to which people want to find such symbolism in things. Then any oblong object is a phallus and any slit a vulva.

Yea if its not your car or your house etc etc. It was just a thought. I'd been wanting to get a tattoo for years now but I could never figure out what and then Berserk exploded into my life so I thought that would work. However I'm probably too much of a puss to get one.

I honestly love the idea of using the Dragonslayer. A few years back I remember flirting with the idea of getting the Dragonslayer on my forearm, as big as my forearm would let me. But the idea manifested into a very dramatic sleeve. But Berserk has to reserved of an attitude to have something screaming at you from across the room, like a sleeve obviously would. So I had to pitch that thought. But I give you a thumbs up for the idea. That would be brutal to see. But just remember that most of the time, tattoos on the arms turn into sleeves.. and question if you want the Dragonslayer being the main course. But standing alone I think it would look goddamn amazing.

Personally, I like the idea of Zodd doing his "RARGHH" pose, with both horns still attached, arms bent and slightly lifted up.

What other Berserk icons/symbols would make good tattoos in you guys' opinion? I really like everyone's brand tattoo, but that seems like such an obvious tattoo given its prominence in the series, so I'm opting for something different like the skullknight tatt posted some posts up.

There are plenty. The Band of the Hawk's standard, for example. Or the Holy See's hawk symbol. The symbols Schierke uses could work too, although they're usually not specific to Berserk. There's the Tapasa's symbols too, and everything from the Kushans.

I would point towards a tattoo of the the Beherit . Not so much when its red though, over time it would just look like you had something wrong with your skin. hell there is a lot. I mean, a tattered warbanner of the hawk's would be great. A silhouette of Griffith's helmet. Even though he's kinda goofy, Puck would make a very good tattoo. He might be the best character in Berserk to get a good tattoo of. Union head of puck maybe?

I've been following the manga since secondary school, and learnt to draw from Berserk. So, yeah, I just had to. XD
I intended it to be small and discreet, but I think it's a bit too low.. it's so hard to compare manga anatomy to real life.. -_-;

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. :)

I'd been thinking about getting a brand tattoo on my neck a few years back but in the end I opted out and got a one piece tattoo on my arm instead - easier to conceal from my parents lol. I could post a pic later if you guys wanna see it.

Anyhoo, it's been 2 years since and I reckon it's time to do my back with something a bit special. So I found this pic on my laptop, of something I think miura drew, which incorporates a lot of the berserk imagery.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y212/Tokioka/berserktattoodsg.jpg

I bet most of you guys have already seen it, but what I'm asking for is a clean version (black & white) without any of the text, etc that obscures the background symbol. I could only find this one from a wallpaper and another one which has some kind of grainy texture behind it, making the details difficult to distinguish.
(EDIT: The profile pic on the left is what I meant by the grainy version xD)

If anyone could help me out I'd be really grateful. Thanks. ^^

Yeah, not bad. Thanks for reminding me about the red logo!

I should've made myself a little clearer, I'm not going for a banner or flag on my back, just the Hawk logo. So just one color. A really dark red... maybe a really dark blue are my favorite choices at the moment. I've thought about doing it black also, but I'd have to live the rest of my life explaining to people that it's not the actual "correct" color.

Yeah, you're right, it is a good alternative. I actually had a brand done on the palm of my left hand by a friend as a sort of spur-of-the-moment thing. I had known that henna lasted a while, but when I saw that it still hadn't faded after two weeks, I was very impressed. :badbone:

So, there you have it. I am forever a Berserk fan. And now I get the privelage of showing my friends that I got a tattoo from some obscure Japanese comic where there's a dude with a big sword and is missing an eye. Remember: If friends don't know what Berserk is, they are not your friends; they are only excellent soldiers.

Yep, it's my very first tattoo.

For the longest time, I thought I'd never get one in my life, just because I couldn't think of anything I wanted etched on my body forever.

How I went about actually getting it is kinda funny. I wanted to go get my ears re-pierced, so I headed towards the tattoo place in town. Halfway there, I thought, "Dude, Berserk." I turned my car around, went home, broke my mom's and dad's heart letting 'em know their 25 year old li'l baby boy's getting a tattoo. I rummaged through all my Berserk books, fan art, fan colors, various Miura drawings, and it came down to Book 27's cover. I rushed back to the tattoo place and was like, "I WANT THIS TATTOOED HERE." Luckily, a dude was able to start right then at that moment. I popped a few of my "chill pills" (anxiety medication) so I wouldn't freak out and get jittery. (I have a thing about sitting still for extended periods of time; the session was three hours; I'm not a druggie; my medication is prescribed.)

Also, I accidentally got tatted up on an empty stomach. Nothing weird happened or anything, but yeah, the guy was very VERY serious about eating beforehand. I told him I did, just because I wanted it done then and there.

As for the pain, the first prick of the needle machine dealy was a big shock, and I thought, "OWIE." After a few seconds, it was more annoying, if anything. But then, after about two hours, it became nearly unbearable. Mostly because he was etching over places he already etched. At least I think.

I'm proud to have Guts on my arm forever. I'm also proud that I handled getting a tattoo way better than my ex-girlfriend. Tee hee.

Ok guys I'm getting my brand tattoo tomorrow right where Guts has it! Any suggestions, and tips or ideas?

Yes I have some suggestions. Really get it right. I made the mistake of getting the tattoo when I first started watching the anime and reading the manga. I got the brand perfect except it's too big and not in the right spot. I have it on the side of my neck as opposed to the back right part of the neck.

I remember debating what I should do for color. I was discussing with the guy what the brand was and how it bleeds from time to time and he suggested perhaps making it flesh color and appear like an ACTUAL brand and having it bleed just a little to a drop at the bottom. I opted for an all black brand since the latter would have cost me a bit of money and I was limited in funds.

So in short, get it right. Bring your manga or print out the brand as it appears on Guts. Think hard what you want for color choice if any at all depending on your budget.

ALSO IMPORTANT! Go to a reputable tattoo shop!!! I can't stress this enough. I didn't know jack about where to go since the brand is the first and only tattoo I have. I ended up going to this place suggested by a friend and it ended up being a crappy experience. I went with my gf at the time and the entire time the artist was hitting on her and when he tattooed the brand on me he really dug into the side of my neck and gave me a sort of attitude since I was stressing how I wanted it to be exact. Example he had to resize the tracing on my neck a few times before I thought it was exact.

I wish I held off until now to get it. But it was a spur of the moment thing. It looks good at a glance to ppl not a fan of Berserk. But me I see the flaw everyday I look at it. It's not terribly bad but it just bothers me that it's not EXACT. I'm even thinking of going so far as to get it removed and tattooed correctly over again. I know sounds stupid but....just...get it exact man that's the advice I can give ya good luck!  :serpico:

thanks man. I will be bringing the manga to get it in the exact right location and i will be going with black for the color. I'm still a little unsure about the how bold it should be. I'm leaning towards keeping it skinny.

Ok all done. I'll post a picture later when I can but i can say for now that it came out perfect. It was very simple. I was litterally in and out in 8 minutes. Fast, cheap and painless. Can't wait to post a pic later and get your guys reaction!

edit- alright heres a pic

okay I'm not trying to be a dick here but I'm giving you my honest thoughts on it.

I don't know if it's how you wanted it to be but first off, it's too big. That's about the same size I got my brand. There's a good shot of it in volume 13 of it being smaller. Take a look:

As for placement it's right on so good work on that.

The only other thing I'd say is if you'd like later on go back and redo the tattoo. Touch it up with some shading to make it look like the brand. And if you're feeling bold add some blood there. I wish I had this image available when I got the tattoo because I would have gone by that.

But overall nice work getting it! Welcome to the Berserk for life club!  :guts:

and this is the tattoo.

You guys are devoted! But arent you afraid that the brand will provoke a pack of rabid dogs to chew your leg off? Or that you will cut yourself on a knife that turns out to be infected with a rare bactheria that eats your brain?  :void:

Only $80...lucky you...I paid $150!! Which is crazy and after it healed it looks like crap and now I have to go some place else and pay again to have it fixed!

Try click-holding on the image on dragging it to your desktop.  That should work.

I'll probably start having work done for a full back piece tattoo come spring. Some recent Berserk purchases left me somewhat poor but I think I have all of the reference pictures I need for it now.

EDIT: Actually now that I think of it, do you guys think the back piece tattoo should be in colour, or black and white like the manga? I would like to hear some thoughts or opinions on that. I've been undecided about it for a while.

I would say black and white. Black ink holds the best over time, and the illustration you will base your tattoo on was created in black and white in the first place, so it might actually not look as good in color as it does in black and white.

I have two tattoos Mire_Elf, one in color and one black and white. While I love my color tatoo, the black and white just has a different, more artistic, sharper feel to it. Also I think black and white fits the persona of the God Hand far better.

Your best bet would be the manga, from volumes 26 to 31. Also, check out Miura's extra cover he made for volume 34 if you like "sane-berserker" Guts' form.

I like to keep up with a lot of the guys featured on "www.thatguywiththeglasses.com", one of the reviews "Benzaie" has been doing a TOP LIST of various manga series. He's finally down to the TOP 5 and guess who made number one. Now, I think he gives a good summery, but what really put a smile on my face is the Berserk tattoo's of his brother at the very end of the TOP 5 review. I recommend giving it a watch. I always like to see Berserk being vocally well received.

Well it depends how long you keep it on until you rub off the hardened mehndi. You are supposed to put lemon juice on it so it will last longer( well thats what my family does). It usually last 2 weeks or longer.

Speaking of hardcore, I've wanted to get Guts' brand as a tattoo for a while now (blood and all), but lately I've been thinking of actually getting it branded on. I know it's getting more and more popular in the world of body modification. My plan would be to get the brand burnt on, and then when its healed (not sure if you can even say that though...) going to my tattoo artist and getting him to just tattoo the blood on.

Though I'm a little concerned on how well the brand will hold up to time compared to a tattoo, as well as the price (a metal brand actually has to be made).  And I'm not even sure when to get a brand done at where I live. Every summer there is a pretty big tattoo and body mod convention held in my city,  I wish I had thought of this during the summer  :mozgus:

I don't recommend that at all. I don't think you have any idea how much actual brands hurt. They are extremely painful and can be very messy if not done by a professional (and by professional I mean a farmer who brands his cattle). Just a bad idea. Remember Bam Magera from the Jackass movie? Shit got infected and everything.

I've had burns which lead to permanent scars in the past, and yes, extremely painful. And of course, the larger brand, on my neck would probably be that pain ten fold.

Obviously I would carefully chose a professional who has experience with such things before and look over his past work, just like I have with my tattoos. This isn't going to be some backyard attempt with a hot stick or anything. I agree though, theres is room for things to go wrong, or get infected but, I am certain that my experience with branding would be very different than Bam Margeras dicks on his ass stunt he did as a gag for a movie...

If I were to get the sacrifice brand, I would get it very similar to Pez's (looks great btw Pez :serpico:)
but actually branding seems riskier, getting it too look like you want it.. wouldn't want to flinch while you are getting branded, or risk a smudged brand
good luck to you if you go with the branding,  make sure you don't forget to post pictures on here if you go through with it :guts:

That is my main concern. In the end which will look more like Guts, a full tattoo, or the brand/tattoo combo. I'd have to sit down and have a chat with the artist to make a final decision.

If you get an actual Brand you might have a hard time finding an artist who would tattoo the blood with it. I've been trying to get the Hawks logo tattoo over a scar on my stomach (caused by a hunting knife) for a while and I've always been told that they won't tattoo around scars. Something about the tissue being damaged or weakened makes it not a comfortable thing for the artist I guess.

Holy shit, a brand would be nuts.  Sounds like a bad idea (Or Badical!) I can't imagine how much it would hurt.  That steel has to get like...red hot.  Yuck.  I guess there are precautions you could take to ensure it doesn't get infected or whatever.  I wasn't aware this was something that happened in the body mod culture though.

Anyways, it's your body.  I'd love to see photos too.

It hurt a bit. It was my first tattoo, so I was sensitive to it. But it is small and thin, so it only took ten minutes at top.

About the brand, I would not recommend getting it. At the very least, not on your neck. I thought about the brand before I got my tattoo, however I decided that it was not about being hardcore and risking my health and disfigured neck (fucked up brand < tattoo).

Talk to people who have gotten a brand at that convention in your town and see what they have to say? They would know the most, but will probably not recommend getting it on your neck.

Awesome tattoo. I've never really considered a tattoo in my life as something permanent on my body is such a body decision (I know about the removal stuff but it hurts or will still leave some kinda scar...etc.) But seeing all these branded tattoos kinda makes me want to get one (then maybe I can apply for that branded calender, eh??  ;D) Plus, it only took 10 minutes and didn't hurt that bad?? Wow, I didn't except that.. maybe I'll give it a few more years to consider it (I really don't want to be 50 years old with a family and all with an immature tattoo - I don't consider it immature now at all but probably will when I'm older... I'm assuming)

Also Pez, I can't believe it!!!! Someone else on this forum likes Tsukihime!!! yay!! I finally have someone to talk too. I love Arcueid Brunestud... I assume you've seen the awesomeness of KoK?

Speaking of hardcore, I've wanted to get Guts' brand as a tattoo for a while now (blood and all), but lately I've been thinking of actually getting it branded on.

I assume that in 50 years, Berserk will still be the one thing I look back on as being my favorite story. I truly think that getting a brand is not a mistake and that i will love it forever. I do feel kind of silly when people who do not know about Berserk ask me what it means (I usually summarize it by saying something like "perseverance"), but when someone approaches me and asks if it is from Berserk it always ends in a good conversation.

Also, I do love Tsukihime. Arc is my favorite, however Kohaku is pretty bad ass as well. And I have see KoK. I think Tsukihime will always be my favorite, though.

Ya know I do find that to be a little annoying, I never know what to say when people not familiar with Bersek ask me what it means. Saying it's from a japanese comic doesn't exactly have the oomph I was going for, and does no justice to what it really is. I usually end up trying to elaborate it in a way they can understand which usually ends with me tripping over my words and confusing them :puck:

Yea that stuff is awesome, especially since it's so rare. I'm hoping one day someone notices mine and knows what it's from and actually says something to me. So far nadda, where I live it's going to be hard, (plus I think my hair is too long).

I had someone recognize my brand tattoo this summer on the train heading into Toronto. It made my day that somebody actually recognized it! I thought he was gawking at my chest until he pointed at it and asked "Is that The Brand from Berserk?" Turned out he was a fan and mentioned wanting to get one as well.

No, but I did wake up the other night to this!

Honestly I can never remember to post a pic of my tattoo. I had to have the brand gone over again since the first tattoo artist did a hack job at it. Someone remind me on how to put a picture on here and I'll make a note to put it up.

That's scary.  How can you tell if an artist is good or not? That's one thing that deters me from getting one.  I just don't know any reputable places.

Also, take the photos and download them onto your computer.  Then use a site like photobucket or imageshack (I prefer photobucket) to host the image.  They'll have a simple uploader where you select the photos.  After they've uploaded there should be "share" option somewhere, click on that.  It usually leads you to a list of different codes you can post.  You want the IMG/ Tag.  Just highlight that sucker and paste it here, and the image should appear in browser.  Simple! : )

Go to a shop and ask if you can look at the artists' portfolios. Check them out, see whose style you like or fits what you're looking to get done. Go to multiple shops if you have to. Also, if you know anyone with tattoos, ask them where they went. Don't go to someone who does tattoos out of their home, there is usually a reason they don't work in a shop.

And don't forget that a good tattoo isn't cheap and a cheap tattoo isn't good.

After years of talking about it, I finally got my Flying Sword logo done!

Plan on possibly adding to it. Either cookie cutting a favorite panel into it, thickening the outline, or having some type of fading dark to light blue or gray put in. It'll more than likely take another few years to decide.  :serpico:
Title: Re: Berserk Tattoo
Post by: Aphasia on April 28, 2011, 06:34:20 PM
Looks good man!  Nice clean lines.

Filling it with panels would be sweet looking in my opinion.  Maybe shots of Griffith on his war horse, charging into battle at Doldrey etc.  Although a little bit of shading would look classy, too, and probably a good bit cheaper.

Congrats man. Good choice of a logo. I definitely like the idea of cookiecutting a panel in there or maybe doing some sort of jagged line work or something, maybe sort of a gradual shadow?

I'm starting to get a pretty good idea for an addition to my back tattoo, the flying sword one above. I've decided to go with The Beast of Darkness as the subject, and probably something along the lines of something more subtle.

I'm currently looking for ideas from the manga, obviously I want to use an official image of The Beast, specifically ones of him floating or clinging as opposed to him standing or sitting like he does in some panels. Ideally I'm going to sort of wrap him around the flying sword logo but carefully and hopefully somewhat subtlety. I also want to make the lines on the logo thicker.

Lemme know if anyone has any good images to reference ^^. I'm looking through the manga as well but I'm sure there's some cards and such that I haven't seen that may be perfect. Thanks!

Ok guys so this might seem crazy but I'm seriously considering getting a full sleave of Berserk. I really need to design this carefully and choose what I want to include. So far I'm thinking about starting on the shoulder with the eclipse and then going down my arm have the Godhand. In between I'm thinking something like the vortex of souls spiraling down my arm. Maybe include elements of Skullknight around the wrist like the thorns and roses or his shield.

Please give me some ideas guys. What do you think would make a cool sleave. ? I want to include as many elements from Berserk I can while maintaing some theme and not making it seem cluttered.  I'm going to post pictures  of my idea as soon as I get someone to draw them up. I feel like its going to be hard to have someone unfamiliar with berserk try to understand what I want and how I want it.

Sounds like a really cool idea! I like the idea of starting with the eclipsed sun at your shoulder and having everything spread down from there. As for the god hand, that could be really awesome depending on how you have them depicted (I picture them as Guts imagines them when talking to the SK on the way to Albion, silhouetted and looking down with the eclipsed sun above them). Using the vortex of souls to kind of pull everything together is also a nice touch. Maybe in addition to the SK element(s) (thorns and roses would look cool), add the Holy See symbol (Falcon with double helix) somewhere too?

As for other elements to add, you could somehow incorporate the Beherit in there to add to the eclipse/godhand/vortex of souls motif?

Hope that helps spark some ideas, good luck!

Just ink the whole arm and have the beast of darkness' eyes somewhere. :troll:

Seriously, would you  have something similar to volume 13's cover or trying to be more subtle? I can see the vortex of souls in your elbow. Is Guts, Griffith somewhere in your design? do you want to use colored ink, or just go with the regular one?

Sounds like a brilliant idea, i would have so much fun working out what to put on the sleeve, it would be difficult to figure out what to put in and leave out. you say you're starting off with the eclipse? Maybe consider having the image of Skull Knight breaking through it, with shards from it falling down around your arm?

Hi guys!  Deci asked if I could help him show off the tat he is working on.

It's still a couple steps from complete. He's going to add color behind the Eclipse (top left) for the sun rays, and more solid shading near Guts and in the ground under him to add a little more depth and perspective. He also wants to add some shading/thickening of the winged sword logo.

This reminds me, i still haven't played the 3rd game, although i loved Mass Effect 1 and 2. Even my friends always keep nagging on me to finally play it, but, oh i don't know, when i heard how everyone disliked the ending, even my friends, i don't know, it somehow just ruined every ambition for me to even touch the game. Fortunately my friends never spoilered my in any way, so i don't know what is so bad (and no i don't want to hear it now^^), but just the fact that i know they didn't like it, it just keeps me away from playing it.

I've loved berserk long enough now that I am thinking it would be ok for me to get a Casca located tattoo and not regret it. I was toying with the idea of getting a real branding artist to make the brand. What do you guys think? Brand or tattoo?

Actually getting branded on the breast might not be ideal I think (since it's soft tissues in that zone, and prone to stretching during pregnancy), especially if you're new to the whole "body modification" thing. A tattoo would be a little less drastic.

You may want to also consider that even though the mark is called  "The Brand" in Berserk it resembles a nice sharp tattoo instead of an actual brand that is burnt into your skin. I am not familiar with the work that a "real" branding artist can produce as opposed to the normal brands that I have seen on people, but I'm thinking a tattoo of "The Brand" is more what your looking for.

Also, if you've never been branded you definitely want to adhere to the advice that Aazealh gave in the previous post...

Best of luck... I'm getting branded in the spring time with "269". I'll let you know how it feels  :magni:

As far as I know there's a few different ways to do it, so it'd require careful consideration and documentation before going for it to avoid any bad surprises.

Well I'm finally scheduling to get more of my big-ass Berserk tattoo collage-type tattoo worked on more starting next week! Should finish the Eclipse / thicken the flying sword logo, but I'm also very keen on the idea of starting a sleeve and/or getting a Puck tat near/on my collar bone, since I've done so much to my back (you can see the progress one page back, where Lith posted it near the bottom).

Sooo much to do, I'm very excited and will post more progress pictures as soon once work is done and as they heal up a little in the coming week(s)!  :beast:

I lift weights, and I'd be interested to see someone who actually looked like Guts.  Though the physique of Guts in some arcs just isn't possible to obtain.  I'd say golden age arc Guts is a reasonable if insanely hard goal to achieve.

Cheers man, an iron buddy who digs Berserk! Yeah I agree, the physique he has in Volume 1 is definitely attainable, but what he looks like later on in the manga is probably VERY HARD to do without great genetics or taking testosterone for bodybuilding purposes (which is illegal).. but since I'm gonna train til' I die, I'm gonna find out sooner or later  :guts:

This happened finally , to go along with all my other BERSERK tattoos.

I might get the silhouettes filled in but haven't decided yet if it would look better or not.

Hi,

First tattoo in progress here, next appointment in March to finish it :guts:

It's not a "genuine" Berserk tattoo, but it really is Berserk inspired. I just gave the Skull Knight artwork (Sk.net's emblem, incidentally) to my tattoo artist and let him operate his magic :schierke:

I think he did a great job, and it was well worth the pain !

Thanks ! It was tough at times (plexus, and last 15 minutes...), but otherwise it was totally bearable.

It will be black indeed, my tattoo artist doesn't use colors. He'll just add shades and gradations in march.

This is really cool. What episode is this from? I have no memory of that panel, which is a shame because the art is so great.

Edit: Found it. A great tattoo of a pivotal scene.

Just so you know, that quote is usually attributed to Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry.

****WARNING! THIS POST IS POTENTIALLY NSFW. YE HAVE BEEN WARNED!!***  :slan:

Oh boy...where do I even start.

I've wanted a Berserk tattoo for YEARS now, and always knew that it would be the Brand of Sacrifice. Not very original in the Berserk fandom, I know, but it's a staple of the series and I fell in love with its design and meaning so I just KNEW that I couldn't get anything else. (Yet.)

So when it came to placement, naturally I wanted it on the back of my neck where Guts has it. The purist in me wanted it no other way. However, that placement seemed unoriginal to me and I wanted to be a bit different. I was not bold enough to put it where Casca has it (and may yet want to save that skin for a chest piece should I be so inclined to do so down the road) and nothing else seemed to fit properly.
Then my boyfriend suggested....well...the lower region.
Immediately I fell in love with the idea. How very immodest and rebellious of me, yet Slan would most certainly love it!  :slan:

I had to do it, but I wanted to add my own flare to it, so I sketched out a very rough concept, sent it away to a tattoo artist, and 4 days later there I was.

The sketch had A LOT more going on than I got, but I added a lot of flare so he could pick elements that worked best with the space and my body. I may go back to add more later on, but for right now, I can wait.

NSFW (It IS censored, but be warned. It's still pretty boorish.)

I am incredibly happy with how it turned out, and aside from one or two touch ups to do later on it healed incredibly well and I couldn't be happier with it! (FYI, the placement isn't uneven, I just held my hips weird when taking the photo, hence the angle!)

The pain was...not as bad as I thought. However, with that being said, it was not comfortable.
This is my 4th tattoo, but easily the most painful so far. My other tattoos have moments where they don't hurt at all -- this one, however, was almost always uncomfortable at LEAST.
Though I can tell you, (and so can my boyfriend whose hand I was crushing) that the last 20-30 minutes were hell on earth. I was so raw and sore, I was crying at some parts (particularily the lowest region and nearest the hip bones. NOT FUN!!)

Overall, if you're thinking about a tattoo below the belt, make sure you're ready for the pain past the 2 hour mark. That's when it SUCKS!!

Let me know what you guys think!  :guts:

Ouch, I bet. When I saw the pic, I winced when I saw it went near your hip bone. You've definitely got bigger balls than me.  I would totally wimp out.

As for the tattoo, I really like it. I especially love the brand's 3D effect. I might be mistaken because my phone's screen's so small, but it appears from the sketch that that wasn't part of the initial plan. Did the artist bring up that idea? Or did you come with it latter?

All in all, I think it looks great. The artist did an amazing job. Well worth all that pain. :)

Thanks!  I'm glad I didn't scare you off with the placement, and glad to hear you like it!

In regards to the design changes in the brand, I did originally suggest that red be included, but he suggested that it was "chunkier " and faded out into the skin and I went with it! He also suggested the shadow as I was under the gun and completely agreed. Without it, it looked a bit empty. I was pretty laid back with the suggestions he had for me, I basically pitched him the idea and sketch and he modified it after the fact (but I made sure my boyfriend approved as well so I wasn't going crazy)  after all, my boyfriend actually paid for this tattoo as his Christmas present to me!

I plan on getting a lot more tattoos down the road (I have two more planned this year for sure, [back of my neck and the start of a full sleeve ]) but this will probably be the most hardcore tattoo I'll get in my lifetime.  Hard to top, that's for sure!  :guts:

Looks awesome! Coincidentally, the quote also reminds me of a line from Breaking Bad, which is an added bonus.  :ganishka:

A bold choice, indeed! :ubik: And very sweet of your boyfriend, too! I can only guess at how painful it was, but congratulations on sticking through it. Do you have any other Berserk-themed tattoos in mind?

Not at the moment, I have quite a few more ideas I'd like to work through first before I go back to Berserk (and need to save up the money)!
However, being my 4th tattoo, I knew Berserk was going to be one of the earlier ones, but now that it's "out of the way" I can do more areas of interest! (I will still likely go back to it though!)
