I can't say I'm not proud of these honestly. I think we and especially you Walter did a great job, making emoticons with a personality while keeping them on a reasonable and usable scale (i.e. they're icons and not small avatars of 80x80 pixels).

Excellent work Aazealh and Walter!
my only critique would be that  :isidro: is more of a likeness of Grunbeld than Isidro, IMO.
Other than that, flawless

Well, he has fiery red hair too, and his jaw is too sharp to be Grunberd's (at least to me)... If you have any suggestion, feel free to voice it. :zodd:

How 'bout Casca to sign dementia or something?
You can have her with her eyes rolling in opposite angles for example

Wow, they all look awesome, great job guys!  It looks like this must have taken a long time.  My favorites are Puck and the Troll.  Crying Judo is funny, too.  Poor Jodo!!!1

And yeah, Casca for the "confused" emoticon would be kinda cool...

I think you were absent during the POOR JODO days.  It was one of the recurring jokes here, in response to the flood of POOR JODO threads that were created. Some members wrote long, trite sigs, along with banners that displayed their lament and true, unfiltered love for him, and what a FAG griff is for what he did to him!!

Like Darkbane (http://www.skullknight.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=4661.msg95605#msg95605), I think Judo had it coming! :judo:

It's Judo yeah, the "jodo!! :'(" thingie is a joke due to an important number of female fans misspelling his name while mourning his loss. Guess you missed some important stuff in the end, in spite of what you might be saying. :beast:

Y'all made some really cool stuff. This one is my favorite:   :zodd:

Sounds entrancing.  :schierke:

Sure, this probably influenced by the visual image I had in my head for the longest time, but I always pictured Isidro to be blond, I realize thats not the official color.

(borrowing from the Encyclopedia, hope you don't mind)  As far as the sharpness of the jaw, I would say Grunbeld has more chiseled (sp) features, while Isidro, while not entirely round either, is more child-like in size and shape.  I guess the more obvious reason I said Grunbeld before is the fiery red hair.  While Isidro has spiky hair as well, Grunbeld's looks like its on fire.

That said, I might as well add in that I no idea how I'd go about representing that change in a 20 by 20 pixel format.  So take whatever critique I might have with that in mind.
But still, great work guys.

I refined it. Can't say it wasn't a pain in the ass, and I'm still not 101% satisfied... Strong cheekbones, soft cheeks, sharp chin... I can tell you I had fun trying to have him not look fat. I also made his hair lighter, added a touch of light orange...

Although the one your using seems to do the job, how about using something along the lines of one of the forum icons like the (http://www.skullknight.net/yabbse/Themes/classic/images/off.gif)

I'm afraid it is. The mandate for new emoticons is they not exceed 25 pixels height, at MAX. Otherwise, they look fucked up in posts. Here's an example.
So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. :troll: (27 px high) So here's a bunch of text.

So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. :daiba: (25 px high) So here's a bunch of text.

So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. :griff: (28 px high) So here's a bunch of text.

So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. :azan: (22 px high) So here's a bunch of text.

So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. :puck: (16 px high) So here's a bunch of text. So here's a bunch of text. I'd like to emphasize this. Using them in the proper context is what makes those emoticons great. For example, spamming the troll emoticon (which is supposed to imply a trollish comment) just ruins it, and can even confuse other members over your intentions.

Thanks for the praise. As Aaz said, a new batch of emoticons is really looong overdue. But these will look good, because I think I've gotten better at making them over the years. This Azan one was a cakewalk compared to the early emoticons, which took hours and hours of polishing for each.

And the Void emoticon actually isn't implemented yet. Still working with variations on it. The one  you see is just a first draft, so it's kind of a tease.

Also, I fleshed out Skully's emoticons to make them look a little more realistic. I'm pleased with the results. (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/SK.gif) VS (http://www.skullknight.net/images/SK.gif). And (http://www.skullknight.net/images/badtothebone2.gif) VS (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/badtothebone3.gif)

The Azan emoticon looks great; very compact, polished and professional. There's a difference from the older ones in how well the characterizing detail is packed into the small space while retaining an "emoticon" look. Carcus is still the best, though.

Also, as a favor to me, try not to abuse the use of these things, like for situations that don't warrant it.

I changed my troll emoticon in the 301 thread to something more appropriate.

Slan is among those planned for the future, but they may be used in different ways than we've planned.

It's really not that hard...

This is how I see them. Only a few of them have universal uses. Most have contextual application. I didn't want the smilies to just be generic :) type shit. I wanted them all to have a function for specific types of responses.

 :serpico: Cheesy smile
 :guts: Relaxed smile

 :void: Cackling at you
 :griff: Stare down
 :azan: Disapproval/Disappointment
 :miura: Righteous Indignation
:puck: Disapproval/Disappointment with a flavor of Puck  . Could also feasibly be "defiance."
:judo: Boo-hoo, Jodo he is died.
 :griffnotevil: "I'm innocent!"/"Who, me? "
 :zodd: Rising anger/Flash of violence
 :beast: Delicious/tasty
:carcus: "Yeah, baby/How YOU doin?"/"If you know what I mean, and I think ya do."
 :SK: Official Skull Knight.NET emoticon
:casca: "Smoochies, my dear Walther" ----<<@
 :schierke: "Yeah, right.... Great idea..."
 :isidro: "HO-HOLY SHIT! "
:badbone: "I'm too cool for school."

The only thing I'm not big on is that the eyes now roll across the bottom instead of the top.  I can see this makes it easier to see the eyes what with the furrowed brow, but it will take a little getting used to on my part.  Good work overall though!

Yeah except the big eyed version didn't look as good as these newer version. As far as the newer versions go they don't have a big enough difference for me to pick one over the other. Aside from the eye roll of course.

That still must of taken quite a lot of work. It's really too bad. I would predict something obvious like a giggling Slan or Farnese but no. I predict that without Ivalera, the only option is a seasick Magnifico.  :guts:

A further comment about Ivalera...
Maybe the problem is that it's too pink. I thought her skin was supposed to be a normal color and only her hair, coverings and wings were pink or had a pink tint. the contrast might give the emoticon a more normal look.
Here's a really quick edit to show what I mean.

I appreciate the effort in recoloring it, but it's really not the color that's the problem here, and anyway that's something that would be tweaked later in the process.  These were drafts to finalize the facial structure and form. And it's the face, the hair, the shape that are bogus here. Nothing really resembles her in the least. And anyway, as I said I've abandoned it. Didn't like the direction it was headed.

Here's the whole gang added to the lineup this month. There MAY be one more, but it's iffy at this point.

Azan and Schnoz I nailed on the first try. They just had small tweaks. The rest.... all spawned such a mess they made enough for an island of misfit emoticons.

I don't think I have congratulated you yet Grail, so let me tell you that you did a fantastic job on Slan. It's just amazing, and it was a much needed emoticon.

But of course this is my new favorite.  :rakshas:
That's splendid work Aaz!

Hehe, thanks man. Out of all our members, you ought to be the one that digs it the most, and as a result your opinion also matters the most. Glad you like it. :rakshas: And thanks to the others for their kind words as well.

I can tell that Aaz gave it a predator-ish type feel to it since it is one of his favorite movies.  :carcus:

Honestly, I didn't intend to give it a Predator-like look, but then again it might have subconsciously influenced the way I picture Rakshas appearing out of the shadows. Here are the scenes that inspired me:

Rakshas is incredible. Now we just need Silat, sonia, the tapasa, irvine, locus, godo, grunbeld, magnifico and roderick  :carcus:
Oh and in all seriousness if he could be captured correctly an adon emoticon could represent something not already covered by the other emoticons imo.

Edit: Ok I somehow missed the entire 6th page of this thread. Sorry :(

I don't think anyone except anime dweebs in basements are going to get that confused. This is, afterall, a Berserk forum.

As for your suggestions, it's more important to come up with emotions that we haven't represented yet rather than just to have an arsenal of characters at our disposal as emoticons.

The right adon emoticon could be a great response to blowhard quotes in replies.

And I think my problem with the Slan Icon may be in the lips? I can't pin it down but she seem's to cutesy and not enough lust mixed with regret. Sadly I have no constructive specific examples or suggestions.

Alright, so here's what I think about what's been proposed:

An Adon emoticon should convey retardation if it were made. Something not unlike the "downs" emoticons they have over SA.com, but more exuberant/silly.

For Magnifico I can see a barfing emoticon. Would go well with his current seasickness too.

As for a headslap, I think it's a good idea, but I can't think of a fitting character for it right now.

All these new smileys are brilliant, sirs. Brilliant.  :guts:

Would probably be incredibly difficult to pull off, but the first thing that came to mind for Adon is his flip-top head death scene... as another said above, it'd be representing sort of an "admitting defeat" or "I just got owned!" type of emotion...

But I digress...

I'd say Grunbeld would make a good something, but I think we already have emoticons for any emotions that he's displayed so far, aside from maybe "incredulousness".   :slan:

I was asking Aazealh about wanting to make some new Berserk emoticons, starting with a full set of guts. He pointed out this thread so I'll post here.

I spent the past 10-20 mins. making these 2 guts emoticons, they're 22x23 pixels. (sorry a little over 20x20) I can try messing around with smaller dimensions or shrinking these if you really want to, but they'll get a bit blurry.

(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f42/VirulentShuriken/Berserk%20Emoticons/gutsface122x23.gif) Guts with an evil looking smirk.
(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f42/VirulentShuriken/Berserk%20Emoticons/gutsface222x23.gif) Guts pissed off ready to kick ass.

Thanks! it was kinda meant to be uneven as if his face wasn't facing completely straight ahead. But I'll make it symmetrical for the next update.(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f42/VirulentShuriken/Berserk%20Emoticons/gutsface122x23.gif)

Thread revival, how about Ganishka doing a *facepalm* or a headslap? He's done something similar before, though with much different intent.
You had this as your avatar for quite a long time.
If we ignore why he did it in the manga, I think it could be used for an overall *Doh* or *headslap* emoti. The placing of the hand and the exposed parts of the face would be the problems.

Thoughts?

Over the past month, Aaz, Griff and I have collaborated in updating and revamping emoticons. Hope you guys enjoy them!

Revamped:  :guts:  :casca:  :???:

New:  :magni: :farnese:  :iva:

Each of these guys deserve a sentence or two.

:guts: needed to be updated. His old form (http://skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/guts-old.gif) was among the original line up. He was also the easiest to do, since he was based on a design that Griff had been working on for a while.

Casca's  :casca: :???: emoticons also needed an update, since she was in the original lineup. Her hair was improved to be more accurate and her expression has more going on with it now than previously.

:magni: definitely took me the longest, and is the one I'm most proud of in this bunch. He went through many, many (~20 drafts) stages of design between the debates of Aaz, Griff and myself before Aaz came up with this hilarious animation -- making him the most elaborate SKnet emoticon EVER!

:farnese: turned out well. She was a project that had at least 3 hands in it. Aaz came up with the bashful emoticon idea for her several years ago, but we couldn't pull it off to our liking. Then we had Grail commissioned to do one, but it still wasn't juuuust right. I stepped in and tried a different, cutesy approach and it turned out well.

:iva: was one of Aaz' long-term projects. She went through several drafts as our =P emoticon before we all agreed on a design we liked. After that, animation went smoothly.

These are just the WINNERS of the crew we all worked on the past month. I completed a Flora, but she was something of a failed project. She was going to replace Serpico, but ... her expression isn't QUITE distinct enough to convey that grin as well as Serpico. So she's out of the normal lineup, and instead, she'll be hidden as ": flora :" :flora:. Griff may have one more to add to the lineup as well.

There were also many ... losers that may still see the light of day in the distant future. But for now, we are all collectively burnt out on these damned things. USE THEM WELL!

Ivalera looks great too. It seems like she was a lot of trouble, but the final emote turned out really nice!

Zodd may get an update soonish. Though it might not exactly replace that one. We'll see.

The beast teeth one could be a lot more complicated than it sounds. Making anything curved in a series, in pixel form, is very difficult to make look natural. Id show you how I attempted it in early beast drafts but you'd all laugh :judo:

As for beast tongue. Though it does look simple when compared to something like Magnifico, I'm not sure how much more I can improve on it. Simple isn't always bad.

And with Slan, I'm uncomfortable editing it much more, since it was Grail's originally.

I like that idea. It could be a "just as planned" emote I guess. Don't know how hard it would be to scale that down to emoticon size though.

He__y___er. ... You guys need to find a way to differentiate your names!

Regarding Conrad, I may end up including him as a hidden emote, since it would only have a contextual relevance. I do have one more emoticon in the pipeline that's nearly done. It's an update to one of the more popular ones.

After that, I'll likely take a break before making any more. I still have many ideas, for instance I think Roderick would be great to have in the lineup, but the past three months have been emoticon-heavy, and I'm getting a little burnt out. Thanks for the praise though! :farnese:

These things have become somewhat of a hobby of mine, so I hope I'll be able to make many more. It sounds cliche, but I couldn't make them alone. Aaz's and Griff's advice and help in animating them have been critical in making sure they convey the emotions properly while still resembling the character. I've said it before, but it should be said again, for every one emoticon  you guys end up seeing, there are dozens of variations and failures, often with dramatic revisions.

((http://skullknight.net/images/mozaninew2.gif) vs. :mozgus: ; (http://skullknight.net/images/emoticons/femto/femto1.gif) vs :femto: ; (http://skullknight.net/images/emoticons/farnese-ani1.gif) vs. :farnese: ; (http://skullknight.net/images/magnifico6.gif) vs. :magni: )

Title: Re: BERSERK emoticons!

Think of it sort of like a shifty face one uses when feeling guilty or mischievous. I see it used a lot but it really stuck with me after playing FF11 for so long (It's a variation of some of the many many emoticons eastern Asians use)

(<_<)  or (;;>_>) the second is a face almost sort of panicky looking to the right with sweat marks.

Here's a good explanation: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=%3C_%3C  The examples given on that page are pretty good ones.

Wiki has it listed as: "shifty, suspicious; could also be sarcasm or irritation"

Dude 1: Man, Superman 64 is like the best game ever
Dude 2: <_<  >_> Whatever you say dude.

I guess it's not as well known as I thought, but I find so many uses for >_> on any given day.

Yeah, that's why I'm disinclined to make an emoticon for it. The definition isn't very specific. I like the emotions conveyed to be very clear in the emoticons. I think we already have one for shifty/suspicious:  :schnoz: and the sarcasm/irritation is:  :schierke:

No spilled milk either way, just had to throw my suggestion out there just in case since it's one of my favorite expressions.

I will say that I see  :schnoz: as less sneaky and more exclamatory, but maybe that's just me? More of a surprised or caught of guard emoticon.

I really do love these emoticons, you guys have done a great job.

Roderick is one of a few that I've long been considering. In one I envisioned, he'd be swinging a telescope side to side, searching. Ex: "When's the next episode coming?" :rod:

The problem is that I think we've nailed the basics of emoticon functions. Each time I come up with an idea to add a new character, I realize that adding more would be superfluous. The Femto/Azan/Puck ones, for example, all basically convey the same emotion. Though it could be argued that they have their own slightly different contexts.

As you said, it's hard to match another character with a relevant emotion. But for Rody's emoticon, you've got a really cool and logical idea! You should definitely do it. :void:

I have a suggestion... What about a "nosebleed" emote? There is Carcus for "Hey, you're sexy", but that's not the same, and I don't see any of these fitting for this feeling... So, based on Grail's masterpiece http://www.skullknight.net/forum/oekaki/pictures/155.png , I think a nosebleeding Tapasa guy would be nice :ganishka: What do you think? I can try making it by the way, just tell me what file format and size it should be.

Here's one I've been longing for: (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/undecided.gif)

It's called "undecided," but I've always seen it as more incredulous. Like, "Nosebleed emoticon?" (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/undecided.gif)

"THAT'S your theory?" (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/undecided.gif)

"You're going to do WHAT?" (http://www.skullknight.net/forum/Smileys/Berserk/undecided.gif)

It actually fits Schierke perfectly. She makes this face all the time. It's like one of her roles. :ganishka:
Title: Re: BERSERK emoticons!
Post by: Walter on March 29, 2012, 11:56:19 PM
I actually have a few variations of Schierke's emoticon where she makes that face. I might be able to polish it up and make a new one for her. But no promises... Her resemblance is among the toughest to nail , since her hairstyle is among her signature charictaristics, unless you include her hat, which is HUGE in terms of emoticon height.

Example: (http://skullknight.net/images/emoticons/schierke-what.gif) (http://skullknight.net/images/emoticons/schierke-what-big.gif)

That's actually what her emoticon started as, but when Wally added the eye rolling it was too good to pass up. Also, I think the "undecided" emoticon carries more of a "bothered" or "uncomfortable" meaning, at least that's how I see it. Not downright sad but "not cool".

Was my idea that bad?  :troll: I was already dreaming of using it :judo: At least I like the "undecided" one.
But besides the nosebleed emote, I would support having emotes with these typical anime expressions, like the drop on the head and others... Berserk is a manga, after all... I think they could be pretty funny.

Umm, although my ideas don't seem to be very successful, I have another :troll:

I just realised I really miss a very happy, enthusiastic emoticon. You know, shouting of happiness like "Yeeaaah! I can't believe it! Woohooo!", and/or running around... I think it can be used often, eg. when the new episode comes out after a half year break. But I don't know who should it be? :???: Maybe Sonia?

That's not exactly the same... I thought of a feeling like that Sonia had when Charlotte saw her running to Griffith and hugging him. That really wasn't this "applause" feeling... Well, first of all a spinning emoticon would be a reaaaal hassle to animate. Multiple frames at multiple angles would take a lot of time. When it's just a smiley face with three features (two eyes, a mouth) it's one thing, but when you're trying to maintain a resemblance to a character, each little feature has to be perfect at each angle.

And anyway, I looked up the scene to see the expression you're referring to, but I didn't think it was special enough to warrant an emoticon. I tend to think of emoticons like this... Rather than envisioning a particular scene and then trying to shoehorn in an applicable emoticon that works with it (which is how I set out on a number of failed ideas), I look at emotions generally expressed on the forum, and determine if there's a way they could be expressed or punctuated with an icon instead.

Speaking of which, I don't think you're using the Troll emoticon correctly. Unless you're trying to troll us, or meant the question ironically.

I think I know what you're getting at, but I think the emoticons used in these forums are not of that type you're describing in my opinion, starting with the fact almost all of them are just faces and done in pixel art. Looking at your avatar and signature, which I really like btw, I think you could even make really great ones on own for personal use.
Title: Re: BERSERK emoticons!

Well, first of all a spinning emoticon would be a reaaaal hassle to animate.
I know, that's why I wanted to try it (I like challenges :ganishka:) I'll give it a try anyway, and post it, if you don't mind it. If you don't accept it that's okay, I just wanted to give a try to emoticon-making. Just tell me what size should it be :serpico:
And anyway, I looked up the scene to see the expression you're referring to, but I didn't think it was special enough to warrant an emoticon.
I wrote that scene as an example, not exactly for her expression but the emotion itself and why I think she would be a good choice for this one. I just suggested it because I felt I really miss something like this, but if it isn't needed, that's ok.
I don't think you're using the Troll emoticon correctly. Unless you're trying to troll us, or meant the question ironically.
Actually, I think you're right, just realised I didn't use it correctly, I'm sorry... :farnese: It's expression is similar to an emoticon I use often on another site, that's why I used it often, too, but it seems like their meaning is different...  Sorry, I didn't want to troll anyone. I'll use it more carefully from now on.
I think you should stop posting in this thread.
Okay, okay, just one more, and you won't even see me in this thread again, I'm sorry.
