Title: Biggest Change Ever...
Post by: Walter on October 03, 2001, 08:26:36 AM
A while back, days after we were virtually forced to ban Paradiselost, I got an email that said:

"
...hi Wally...

...I'm sorry you took your idiot decision...

...however, I'll respect it, no problem...

...but, I really hope you'll be able to respct my next decision, boy...

...I'm really sorry...

(((((((((((((((((((

... what's a pity...

-Paradiselost
"

Well, I dont know what a pity is, but I do know that the following message sucks for all of us.

Today I got this email.

"We at Hakusensha Inc. is a publishing company
of BERSERK.
Thank you for your reading our comics, but as you
notice, it is illegal to use any of Berserk illustrations as
well as our other comics' illustrations.

Please delete Berserk illustrations and related comments
immediately, and please do not use them from now on.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hakusensha Inc.

"

Which means, bye bye to scans. Im not even going to attempt to go against Hakusensha, they fully have the right to take legal action against me. Personally Im very satisfied with this, since all I have to do is remove scans. It was bound to happen one day, however...I think its safe to say that you can blame Paradiselost for contacting Hakusensha, since he had contacted them a few weeks earlier about the relevance of "Chapter 83". Yes, it is safe to blame Paradiselost for ruining the fun for everyone.

Oh and on a completely seperate note, email is:
paradiselost@iol.it

PS: Yes it really was Hakusensha, the mail came from the PR guy @hakusensha.co.jp

PPS: Dont inform Hakusensha of Yong's site. I dont want to pull some kind of tantrum and attack Yong in this childish fashion as well. If Hakusensha cant keep an eye on their own merchandise, and need a "bitter informant" to help them, well..thats just plain wrong. But thats just my opinion.

From all of the community Paradiselost, Thanks. Youve really done a productive deed here this day. It is the perfect productive, instead.

-Walter

What a shame and how ironic is it that Yong's site is the one that still has scans? Paradiselost you are the Adon of the Berserk community.

Please buy the manga. They're not expensive at all, and Miura deserves it.

Yes please buy the manga its about 240 pgs long and cost about $8.00 a volume.

Yeah, I think I will order it when I get the money... but since I have about, zero bucks between books this term (120 bucks for a 50 page book, and the like) and leisure money, it'll be a while

That's fine and good...though I have to say, if I hadn't read the manga translations I wouldn't have got as interested as I did in the series...and probably wouldn't be planning to buy them. Yong, and SK.net actually helped in selling manga, not stopping sales.

As for Yong, he also has passworded the new stuff from Young Animal...no chance of getting that outside of a subscription...and I can't afford that  :'(

See, that's why I thought that scanning recent episodes wasn't _that_ bad... If I was Japanese, I could read new episodes without any problem, and for free...

Well, before seeing the scans I had no interest in buying the manga. The covers made it seem far more violent than things I normally read, and having seen it and read it...I will be buying it...that's what I meant by that. As it is, I was working on putting up whole scans with translations on my site for the manga I translate...but the debate on it still worries me. :-/

Yeah, covers may be misleading, but you don't need to have scans of an entire volume to see what the manga really looks like...
And you may have decided to buy it anyway, but I'm afraid a lot of people wouldn't bother... That's what worries me.

I know for a fact that I would have no interest in buying the Manga without having access to translated scans.  That may just be me, but I don’t understand anyone who prefers scans to the real thing, and I question how many customers Miura is actually loosing.  The way I see it the English speaking world is a market that is totally untapped by Berserk, so there is really nothing that is being stolen.  I think that what Yong is doing is tacky and disgraceful, but all he is really doing is ripping off his customers with second-rate shit. (Except for the scans he stole from Walter, of course ;D)  Hmm…it seems that I’m drifting off topic here…..what was my point?  Oh ya, scans are harmless.

yeah, the only people who really profit from imported manga are the sellers, whom in most cases gouge the hell out of the buyers. o_o;

and white hawk, theres no need for all that. if you really want the scans just wait until some legally buying person gets them and posts them on the net. it happens all the time, such is the way of the internet.

I have to disagree, my friend. Scans are very cool stuff. Think of this: scans are pretty hard to find on the net, as they constantly shift sites, so it takes a pretty desperate person to get them, like me and the rest of us. Now, if I could, I'd buy the manga, but japanese are such xenophobics dorx that it's usually a quest only to find original volumes outside Japan.
I have all the volumes of berserk, and I will get more when they arrive in italy. I don't read just every manga I find.
Japan is a pretty fertile market of comics, and I doubt some editor is losing by publishing new mangas. The mangaka aren't rich people (from what I know) and I think it's a business that can't be harmed by such insignificant things as a few scans. Even if the whole series is posted somewhere, a true fan will strive to get the original.

Besides, ordering manga online is rather easy.

I believe harm is done, on the contrary. I'm not saying that a fews scans will kill Hakusensha, of course, but they still take their toll on the manga sales.

Just because lots of manga are printed in Japan doesn't mean that you can steal a few copies once in a while. Drawing and publishing manga is a work, and manga are products. You're supposed to pay for them, otherwise it's stealing.

Walter's scans were illegal, but buying Young Animal issues is far more difficult (... and expensive, yes ^^; ) than buying Berserk volumes, so they were useful for non-Japanese people...

"True fans" may try to get the original, but if editors had to rely on "true fans" only, I don't know if they would be able to pay Miura. ^^;

So Miura is rich afterall, eh? ;)
Anyway, we have opinions that are different, but we agree on one thing, and that'sthe fact we all need t pay for the comics.
I agree, and I told you I would buy any volume if I had access to a translation and a good shop, but I don't. I know for fact that the net has too little sites with berserk scans, so I really opt for the solution of posting new chapters. Young Animal relies on sales within Japan, or doesn't it?

Damnit!! :-/  this is the whole Napster debate all over again.  Look when I was a little kid I used to copy songs off of the radio onto cassette tapes.  Is this stealing?  Was this hurting record sales?  Actually in some cases like Falco (writer of “Rock Me Amadeus”) who only recorded one hit, it probably did.  On the other hand, you have guys who are scouring the Internet looking for translated scraps of Berserk.  If these people are willing to commit so much of their time to Berserk why wouldn’t they commit money for the real thing?

I don’t know how the marketing and distribution of Berserk works in other countries, but in the U.S. there is virtually none.  (Actually aside from special imports you can ignore the virtually)  I have not physically met a single person who has heard of Berserk aside from the people that have become interested after I told them about it.  If it weren’t for fan-subs on the Internet, I would have never heard of Berserk either.

O.K.  let’s say you own a beer company (actually it could be wine or toenail clippers, it all applies).  One day you give a friend a beer, and he really likes it.  He tells all of his friends about it, and you suddenly notice a slight increase in sales.  This is in spite of the fact that you are making a pretty good living and have no interest in selling or advertising the beer outside of your city.    Then one day he moves to another state/province/country and decides to start his own beer company with very similar beer to yours.  THAT BASTARD, I CAN’T BELIEVE HE STOLE YOUR IDEA AND DIDN’T GIVE YOU ANY CREDIT!!!!  But is that really the issue?  The question is: has you friend hurt or helped you beer sales by stealing customers you never had in the first place by selling imitation beer?  One can argue he actually helped sales by increasing your notoriety within your city.

This whole debate is more about pride than anyone would like to admit..

O.K.  it’s time for me to reveal my true identity……………I’m none other than BILL FUCKIN’ GATES.  I’m not the Microsoft Bill Gates, his middle name isn’t Fuckin’.  Sorry I’m tired and a bit punchy.. :P

Yep, I've got 2 x vol.1-8, and all the way to vol. 21 and a half, the scans, which don't really qualify, a hand made beherit, a receit for a never delivered model beherit, a big poster on Japan, and the manga too , The Wolf King and a bunch of scanned pictures from the net. Am I a criminal?
Quote

I don' t think I'm stealing, since sooner or later i'll buy the volumes. It's just that I don't want to wait a year because some italian editor plays with my nerves. But again, I agree it's wrong to steal from rich people. We should steal from poor people, like me.  ;D
Seriously,
I don't think Miura is that rich. It's the same as Hagiwara or Shirow, they get dough but they ain't rich, and they work all the time too, so they probably don't even check their bank accounts if not for purchase of slutty magazines... ;)
But what do I care. I waste my money on violent magazines, like berserk, and make those guys richer, and if I "steal" a few scans to be up to date, I'm sure the god of biomechanics won't mind. Oh wait, that's if I were a replicant... 8)

I agree with White Hawk. I got the volumes, will buy them all any way I can...

I don't think Haku guys have such influence on the web. You already removed the important stuff. They don't even check the site, probably.
After all, as you once said walter, once you delete the pics from the serevr there is no proof.
And if they really push, I'm a coming there to kick their nice suit ass, berserk style (after which I'll smack miura in the head and tell him to go for a drink instead of drawing the whole time)...and then I'd wake up, and realise chapter 189 is out and I have 187 to salivate on...gwaahhh

Yes Olivier, but would you buy, if you were a newbie, a copy of YA without knowing what kind of art there is inside?
I mean, isn't it counterproductive for the Hakusensha to not publicize their manga in this way (since that internet can reach much more people than the Japanese, as this site proves)?

You'll agree that pictures from old volumes don't tribute justice to the actual visual show of Miura-San...

Hi,

Just in case you don't, 'Paradise Lost', was written by John Milton and first published in 1642.  It is one of _the_ classic pieces of English literature.

Who knows, perhaps good Paradise sees himself as Milton saw forlorn Satan!  There is, afterall, certainly something devilish about the way he uses smiley faces and ...

Why’s he need a resume, hasn’t he made reference to about five different jobs he has? Head of his own private business, an executive in some company with international dealings, a toy company exec (that’s how he knows all about the magazine biz!), a bunch of other important sounding job positions that are most definitely lies.  I could be wrong, but I don’t care either.

Basically what he said (even tough no one cares) is: dear white blah blah, i think you would be afraid to tell me those things if you met me face to face...you are brave speaking in such manner cuz you're online...and then some blah blah stupid stuff about my country, which is irrelevant for this case.

So, to let everyone understand, this guy is challenging me to a fight.

Great.

I just did that a month ago with you. I also told you to send me an email so we may arrange the details of our little encounter. However, being busy and chicken as you are, you just shut up like a bitch. Which I understand, because I truly wish we never meet. I AM AFRAID to MEET you. You see...
to end up in jail because of a thing like you would be truly humiliating. So, to make this rather childish and useless debate finish, I challenge you to an even harder fight.

TRY TO MAKE SENSE!

Do you know what flaming is? Of course you don't, you're dumb.
Anyway, if unable to percieve such primal jokes as the one's I make, you'd better be quiet. You know and I know that if I saw you I wouldn't talk much...I'd let my boots and hands do the talking (- uechiryu finally used for good purpose  ;D - ).
So...either play along  or stand aside, in that dark corner of your mind, where you still  believe you're important.

And oh yeah, I really am growing tired of this, so don't expect me to reply
:P You're no fun anymore...
