Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: Movies to dread

I give them an E for exuberance and bringing back Shane "Jeez, you gotta big pussy!" Black to direct, but The Predator looks like it's going to make Predators look like the original Predator. Also, The Rock does every other action movie that comes out and they couldn't get him or another more Predator-sized dude in this one? Oh well.

The trailers are bad, but Shane Black hasn't made a movie that I disliked, so I'll watch it.

The Endless was a pretty interesting Lovecraftian indie. Not enough tension/mood, and the actors kinda sucked, but these directors deliver in plot what other movies of the same genre stumble upon.

People love or hate this one, so sounds pretty good! I've heard favorable comparisons to The VVitch.

A24 is usually a sign of quality. I still favor the Witch slightly (need to rewatch it), and I can see how that one can be more divisive.
Hereditary mixes art-house with mainstream pretty well, has some classic horror scares while still delivering a deeply emotional, complex family drama. The third act falls apart slightly by trying to cater to the new-horror crowd, but I was already so in for the ride that I didn't let some of the obvious scenes bother me (still, they're done with gusto and elegance).

I hope these movies start a new trend in horror by going back to the slow-burn, more mature themed movies like Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist, skipping what the 80's did to the genre (even though kid me loved Freddy). The Suspiria remake (surprisingly helmed by a renowned director) looks amazing as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KS2Xk8LJYA - great music by Thom Yorke.

Support these movies.

Hereditary was a trip. A cinema experience like I haven't had in ages. Go watch it. It deserves the hype. I can't wait to go back.

Miura's comment, courtesy of Puella:

I've explained more than enough to the young manager about the charms of narration. ( ̄3 ̄)

** In Japanese the word for "narration" and "explanation" is the same, so the comment is funny.

Annihilation was pretty decent. From the director of Ex Machina. Recommended for fans of Stalker, Alien, 2001, The Thing, even though it doesn't achieve the heights of either of those.
The sci-fi is a bit underwhelming, but as an audio-visual experience, it's quite beautiful and unearthly. The horror elements were effective as well.

My pick: Devin Townsend (the Zappa of our time :serpico:)

Another variation, pick only 3 songs that you can listen for the rest of your life.

Gas - Untitled #5 (out of Pop)
Popol Vuh - Vuh

Hey, The Leftovers is finished, so Damon Lindelof is free, right? How about a "dream team" tag team of Lindelof/Abrams?  :ganishka:

MSN was the big thing around these parts until fb took off. You could customize it entirely, play games with other people, record audio. After it disappeared, i guess whatsapp is the only thing i use to keep in touch with people since i left all social media years ago.

He should just make a 2 hour long movie without pointless scenes and it would be both high quality and produced relatively fast.

Mulholland Drive was supposed to be a show. He only filmed the pilot and after tv execs rejected it, he filmed another half and made it into a feature, in what is considered by critics as the best movie of the century - https://goo.gl/TJo1Wp - I don't know if i agree, but it's certainly his best movie. Sometimes creativity needs obstructions.
