Anime Asylum / Re: New Berserk Anime for 2016
« on: July 18, 2016, 09:37:30 PM »
I really wanted to give this series the benefit of the doubt but it's making it really hard for me. The only part I really liked was episode 2 when the Hirasawa song starts playing. Those 2-3 minutes were decent.

Everything else is either ugly or badly paced or both.

I guess I have low expectations or something cause I was alright with it. I wish they had the budget to do 2d for the faces all the time though. That's the major complaint I have. The Guts CG model looks alright from the side but the front view has some major issues and his mouth doesn't look too good. And the girl and her father's face in this episode were even worse.

Any chance of a Japanese version? The dubbing is okay, but I much prefer the Japanese voices. But I know that could mean a ton more work.

Goddamn, those are some great drawings. Studio 4c has some amazing draftsmen, that's for sure.

Yeah, that scene in the manga is possibly the most horrible thing I've ever read. But it also single handedly proves how skilled Miura is. To show something like that so graphically but still completely eschew titillation... is not easy. The movie is going to have to be careful how it deals with it, though it probably won't show it as graphically and will therefore avoid some of those issues.

That is one goddamn well made trailer. Can't wait for it to be put up officially. That one had a few framerate problems.

Guess they created a bunch of CG assets for that ballroom scene and then felt the need to get all they could out of them. That's a real problem with CG. Once you create something and can cycle it from any angle (like a dance) it makes laziness verrrryy tempting.

I haven't been too pissed off with the adaption yet, as I tend to be lenient, but getting rid of the bonfire of dreams scene is a real shame. That's a great bit, one where the original anime really shone, and could have really strengthened the overall theme of the movie. Poor decision making.

He looks like he's in a really uncomfortable pose.

Oh man, that one for volume 13. I shouldn't have laughed, but those expressions are too priceless.

Berserk Miscellaneous / The Craziest Berserk Related Videos

I just discovered this, which is the strangest Berserk-related thing I've ever seen (though Guts and Griffith enjoying fast food in that official ad was pretty weird.) It gets Berserk-related 25 seconds in.

Anyway go ahead and post any other strange Berserk related stuff or parodies you've come across, or funny/weird AMVs that use Berserk clips. Like this awesome one:

I get what you're saying, DirectDK. The changes are regrettable but sometimes necessary, and while these movies won't be a masterpiece, they have the potential to be very entertaining and will help to get more people into the manga, especially those who aren't really used to animation enough to notice the traditional to CG switches.

Lots of conflicting emotions about the film. On the one hand, great to see the story in actual motion, unlike in the original show. However this was definitely an adaption, not just a remediation to animation. Lots of stuff in different places, which I'm okay with, but the pacing was a little weird in parts and some of the CGI made action sequences really awkward. Overall I think it'll be a nice introduction and hook for people to get into Berserk and a nice visit to an earlier arc for people who are well acquainted with the story, but it's nowhere near the "faithful" adaption that a lot of people were hoping it would be. I found it interesting though, I'll say that much. And I'll be buying it on DVD when it comes out in the States.

I actually just pre-ordered this. First anime related sculpt thing I've ever actually bought. Hopefully I don't make a habit of it because it's kind of expensive. But this just looks so cool. I'll justify it as artistic reference or something.

If you can put some high quality scans up of those character models that would be much much appreciated. I love character model sheets.

Are you implying that Japanese people have no taste for anything than pervert shows? Like any other country in the world they have people with different taste's. In Japan Otaku's are looked by negative eyes and they are in the minority so it is disrespectful to look at Japanese people like they are bunch of Otaku's.

The Japanese aren't a bunch of Otaku's but it's pretty clear that recent seasons shows pander to otakus. And the ones that do sell the most (Bakemongatari, etc.) So yeah, in my opinion anime fans in japan right now have seriously shitty taste.
Thankfully there's still some shows and movies with integrity, but those are few and far between.

Anybody know what the returns were for the opening weekend? How is this film doing?

Awesome. First 10 minutes sure had a lot of movement in it. Nice pacing, though the CG still bothers me. I hope the technology improves especially as far as cell shading goes as these movies continue to come out. Shadows in anime are usually designed to look good and have nice shape design, but with a render engine you never know quite what you're going to get.

Woah, congrats! Hope you're pulling in mad dough from getting these songs high on the charts!

Awesome. From an animation perspective there's a bit I could criticize in those bits, but from a staging perspective it all looks great. Except for that abnormally large feather that's there for some reason. But I'm very excited.

The bright grass is the only thing bothering me in the trailer. There's a thing in painting called the "green problem". Our eyes are most sensitive to the color green so painters usually "smuggle red" into a scene to minimize the brightness of green. I'm sure normal background artists would know this, but CG artists might not. I'm hoping that gets toned down in color correction for the final product.

Not big news, but the guy doing the sword work got back to me:

Thank you for your message! I did the best I could, although of course we had to bow in the direction of fantasy at times to keep to the manga style. I'm anxious to see what the final result is like. I loved working in stunt design, though.

His sword skills look pretty solid. Anyway they're probably using him for motion capture for CG knights in the background, not for the main character actions.

A comic about trying to restore Casca's memory? That's pretty intense. The inking is a bit off, looks like either sharpie or ballpoint pen but mostly because Miura doesn't use that much cross-hatching. Still I'm intrigued.
