It seemed like the reveal that the hydra regenerates didn't really affect anything in this fight. Zodd's only got so many hands he would have needed Grunbeld to nuke it anyway! Maybe Miura plans to use them again in the story.

Speaking of the hydra, my first thought when i started really looking at its introduction was "there's nothing stopping that thing from devouring those giants right there." But Miura was one step ahead of me, because the very next panel it does just that  :ganishka:

That tiny burst of "giant speak" we see is pretty cool too.

Oof. 9 pages. I guess this is the price we gotta pay for such quick releases. It's a shame we didn't get anything major this episode but at least there's nothing left to attend to now.

Nice fight.

Anyway, for all the wild speculation in the thread, I feel like we haven't really talked about what that thing in the bushes might be. There's quite a large variety of beings to choose from, so what could it be? And is it allied with the JŲtunn, is it coercing them, or is it just lying in wait for some reason?

I personally, had been holding off because I was nervous about diving too deep into speculation based on one tentative translation. With such little info to work with currently, every word used to describe the mystery-thing counts. Would an 'ominous od' imply something fundamentally evil like an apostle? Because Sonia has definitely encountered enough of them to recognise that when she sees it. I'd have to go back and check if trolls and ogres and such were also noted by Schierke as having an evil od. I tend to quickly fall into the assumption that "natural" fantasy creatures were kind of neutral, like wild animals. The way it's described as just being "in the bushes" is also fairly flat, human language that doesn't really evoke too much majesty or mystery.

My spur of the moment theory: Due to Eflhelm's time dilation, more than a few nights have passed since Rickert escaped and Rakshas has either been exiled for his actions, sent on long range reconnaissance or simply refused to show his face around out of shame. But now he has a reason to make his presence known to Griffith again.

As mentioned by flora , what lies in the deepest layers is something that surpasses human imagination so i don't know how it could materialize in the real world. Maybe it will represent an even greater foe for griffith and his army.

General consensus is this being is whatever surviving remnants of the "Idea of Evil" Miura has decided to keep from the lost episode.

But all this talk of the God Hand's end goal got me thinking... We've seen the Berserk world evolve from a state of small pockets of confined magic and low level spiritual entities to a much deeper level of more powerful spirits and monsters as part of the God Hand's plan. As we know, the deepest level of the astral world is the abyss, which also appears to be associated with the God Hand. So maybe the ultimate goal is to continue to grind these two worlds together, reaching deeper and deeper levels, until the abyss of souls displaces physical reality itself, swallowing everything. Though i'll admit something of this level would probably require a second astral explosion so the odds are slim, at least with the rules we're currently shown.

I really doubt it.  They look way more like designs the humans would have tattooed or painted to me.

If you mentally wrap these skins back around people some of these "tattoos" are a bit weird, Like the guy with a single dragon stretching from his right shoulder to his left knee. It's not really synonymous with real world tribal tattoos. Plus, the architecture and armour these giants a wielding seem to suggest they've been preying on run of the mill Midlanders.

Either way I'm left wondering how the humans were killed cleanly enough to skin whole like that.

Perhaps it's the same secret giant tech that helps the breasts to stay so voluptuous post-skinning.

I wonder what the overall point of this battle is, are the Falcons simply defending their borders? is this a form of expansion of Falconia's territory? or does Griffith want to recruit the giants? Either way this will provide some well needed context of the state of Fantasia, since the last Griffith POV episode focused mainly on Rickert, I hope this time we will see the next steps in Griffith's plan.

The lack of giant trunk on the horizon suggests to me that Griffith is a long way from home right now. But it's hard to tell with those big, stormy clouds. If it is as far as I assume, then it lends a bit of credence to the idea Griffith is doing some recruiting rather than border protection. These guys look like they can follow orders at least.

I agree that it's exciting to see why what developments Miura is going to present with Griffith. If we do make it as far as his coronation it will be really exciting because that's been his end goal since the beginning as far as i'm aware. The last check on his dream list ticked off. And where do you go from there?

Hopefully, while we're here we might also see if there were any repercussions to Rakshas' failed assassination.

I must add that Sonia's face doesn't seem to happy about that attack (might be that I read her wrong) but she does seem happy... Might be she's starting to be against such savagery? I would not necessarily bet on that though.

Thoughts?

Maybe she's still thinking about the encounter between Rickert and Griffith.

Thanks for the links RaffoBaffo and Mangetsu!

Nice! Miura's busting out the old HR Giger branded crate of phallus-monsters I see. We haven't seen that aesthetic for a while. Though how could we not have them here?

Fun to see Farnese has also caught onto the rules of the dreamland. Though her dream didn't have a lot of potential 'items' to bring through, so we may only get Mozgus.

Itís pretty interesting that Miura has chosen to link the Eclipse with an eye again, this time with a character with much less literary precedence to. Guts lost an eye. ďThe black sunĒ cruelly becomes his psychological replacement that only replays scenes of horror and loss. And it could be a way to represent the nature of apostles and the God Hand as ďforbidden knowledgeĒ, or a symbol of the new perspective of Griffith and the world that he was forced to witness.

When you apply the imagery to Casca you lose that literal connection that grounds the metaphor, and you can only connect it with the more abstract meaning, which doesnít hold as much water.

Still, there was a reason Miura rendered out the sky in the shape of an eye again. And whatever reason that is will no doubt be explained (very satisfactorily if history repeats) during this adventure.

And while this eye is very different to the jagged lightning scar associated with Guts, that row of blowing flower petals is making it really hard not to see the beast grinning in there. Completely off the wall theory, but maybe the beast has grown into some sort of memetic creature that bleeds into other subconscious. It sort of works with Dananís offhand comment about the connection between dreams and the spirit world. But personally I'm not feeling it. The Beast of Darkness doesnít need this development to be any scarier and the purely psychological nature of it is a really great aspect. Thought it might be worth throwing out at least.

The sequence beginning the dream sequence is pretty confusing. One moment the characters appear regular sized and the next theyíre smaller than Ivarella. Is it some sort of Alice in Wonderland style moment to indicate the dreaming has begun? Because thereís a much more fitting transition for that afterwards. So itís actually happening?

That was some impressive dream logic with Farnese, the way she was washing both the original group and the HICKs, that fact that the armour was Guts clothes and at the same time Guts himself  and of course the wobbly dragon slayer (2016 teaser confirned canon).

Mixing up the style went a long way in establishing the dreamscape. Casca's was excellent but i also like the bounciness of Schierke's too. We already know things a going to get darker the deeper they dive into Casca's dreamscape but I wonder just how bad its going to get. And whether any actual danger is going to befall the other characters. When Schierke experienced the Eclipse through Guts she almost lost herself and i'm sure there'll be a similiar threat here.

Super exciting stuff on the horizon!

Wow this guidebook is looking like the stuff of dreams! Such a deep look into Miura's process and ideation as well as an actual print compilation for all those miscellaneous paintings that have just been floating around the net until now. I wonder if we'll get an english release down the line, though i'm not sure i'll be able to hold off buying until then.

Looks like a sketch from this episode, yes. What a tease!

From what little we have, it's giving me vibes of an abandoned battlefield. Way eerier and quieter than what I was expecting. It's nothing like Guts' explosive eclipse flashbacks, but it captures another perspective of the eclipse that better suits Casca really well.

So Guts is handing over the dream job to Schierke and Farnese? Poor guy can't catch a break. But it looks like we'll be getting a glimpse into each of those character's minds which will be awesome!

Depending on how slow they take this, this would be a great time to show the events that led to Schierke being trained by Flora. In any case, There's potential for a lot of info to be shared around and after this the three girls are definitley going to be very close.

Anime Asylum / Re: 2016 Berserk TV series: Episode 12

By the third episode this had plummeted through the realms of bad adaption and just became bad story. Was there anything this show got right? The pacing was atrocious, the character's butchered and every single scene was dulled by completely soulless animation.

If I stood there motionless, would the trolls beat Femto down into submission?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely going to spend a few missions doing exactly that.

Well if they're going to let us play Femto himself, Lore-destruction is not a concern and there's really no limits to who they're going to pull out as well now. Those old posts about playing Void aren't that unlikely any more.

This is certainly a lot earlier than I anticipated, and it's a shame we won't get episodes till December like last time. But if Aaz is right about taking the time to work with the anime, I can't fault the logic. It seems to be pulling a decent crowd, and it will pay to have the second season be, you know...good.

Last time the same thing had happened. The new anime had been announced and Berserk went on a break. Not only did it come back alongside the anime, but also a new Volume was released, hence Volume 39 being already confirmed for next year.

So the Hakusensha editor is telling Miura, "take you're break now, so by the time this new show comes around we can publish a constant stream of episodes to keep up with it."? Definitely seems possible. But I would think it would be better to start releasing the episodes now. considering that the new viewers have run out of show material and will likely turn to the original source. Either way, i'm not sure how I feel about Miura being suppressed from releasing work by somebody else.

Interesting interview from GameSpot, also confirms what I think a lot of people were already guessing in that adapting to "the end of the Millennium Falcon Arc" actually means that they are adapting up to the beginning of volume 32. So I'm guessing Guts and Zodd's fight against Ganishka will likely be the final stage/boss fight.

It's a shame they won't be including one of the most spectacular fights, the Neo band of the Falcon vs Ganishka's spawn in the shadow of his reincarnated form. That would be seriously incredible. Especially if you could just play some random peon trying to survive amidst apostles and monsters. Though that's diverging very far from a standard Musou experience. Sea God tentacles would also make a nice, simple horde army for a mission. Regardless, 32 volumes of material is insane and I can hardly complain there's gonna be a shortage of material.

Another character who fits this aspect (besides the "Innocent" part I guess) is Isidro.

Isidro also has a lot of comparison to The Sun, which is similarly vibrant and optimistic. But the whole "beginning of the journey" theme of The Fool really tipped me in the direction of Puck.

I think Skull Knight is another candidate for this spot and not just because of the title of the card but because he has offered guidance, advice and wisdom to other people (mainly Guts).

I agree, I had skimmed a bit and The Hermit, Justice and Wheel of Fortune were all giving me some Skull Knight vibes, but looking back I might wind up giving this one to him and saving Hermit for Godot. I guess there's pros and cons to this "do it as I go" method  :ganishka:

Wow, That's an impressive number! Definitely getting a broad range of characters in that pool.

Character Cove / Berserk and Major Arcana
« on: September 16, 2016, 11:15:34 AM »
First of all, this is not a post claiming that Miura used any Major Arcana inspiration in creating his characters. I just though that considering the flexibility and broadness of the cards as well as the large cast of characters, it would be possible to run the cast of Berserk through the Major Arcana, the 22 most recognisable cards in a tarot deck, and create a series. This topic was discussed once before on this site back in 2003, but in the years since, Miura has introduced and expanded on so many characters I thought it might be worth revisiting.

This is actually one half of a task, with the second being potentially creating artworks of these cards. Drawing is a passion of mine, but being a busy university student, I canít promise Iíll be getting onto this as soon as the comparisons get nailed down. Of course if any arty people here (and there are a lot of you) think these would make a fun exercise theyíre welcome to try it out as well.

A few notes before we start!

1:   Itís important to note that tarot cards generally carry a wide range of interpretations. Differences sources will tell you different traits. However there is a key universal theme underlying every source that Iíve tried to extract. If anybody more experienced in Major Arcana notices Iíve misinterpreted a card, please let me know!

2:   Tarot Cards have both an Ďuprightí and a Ďreversedí orientation, each with different interpretations (reversed is typically more negative). Iíve chosen to purely rely on the more default, upright positions for my comparisons.

3:    The structure Iíll be using for this post is listing the number and name of the card, and then including a few keywords that summarise the card. Iíll then describe any justification I have for assigning a character into that specific slot.

4:    Some of these may be empty. Itís not my intention to force any characters into roles I donít think they fit well enough. If you guys have any suggestions on these (or a better replacement for one I did fill), post it! Otherwise, I guess we can sit around and wait for Miura to introduce a more fitting character.

5:    There are 22 cards in the Major Arcana! This is a lot of info to dump in front of everyone in one go. So Iíll limit this OP to the first 5 in the sequence, and we'll work from there.

Right thatís about it, letís get started!

0. The Fool
Innocence, New beginnings, Potential

Our very first introduction to the world of Berserk (besides some hot demon action) is the chance meeting between Guts and Puck. Meeting Puck can very well be described as a new beginning for Guts, as it starts him on the road to redemption by introducing a conscience and voice of reason that had been lacking in his life since the Eclipse. This also ties into the innocence and optimism of Puckís character. Chestnut jokes aside, Iíve chosen to delegate The Fool to him.

1. The Magician
Skill, Logic, Intellect

As well as the keywords I mentioned, the Magician is said to be ďthe bridge between the world of the spirit and the world of humanity." The magician hosts innocence and purity just like The Fool, but this is backed up by worldly experience and knowledge. There is also a link to the four primordial elements and their relationship to the mind, body, heart and soul. I feel that Schierke fits this description well enough.

2. The High Priestess
Intuition, Higher powers, Mystery

The High Priestess is often described as ďThe guardian of the unconsciousĒ, and is used to represent wisdom, serenity, knowledge and understanding. Flora is a strong contender for this card, being a prominent provider of understanding and knowledge to the main characters as well as invoking a great deal of serenity and mystery in her appearance.

3. The Empress
Fertility, Nature, Femininity, Abundance

Originally, I had Danan rolling in my head for the High Priestess, but once I read deeper into this card how could I possibly resist? Deeply associated with the mystical realm of angels and faeries, the empress depicts a connection to Mother Earth and life. This card also shows a deep connection to femininity, and the beauty, creativity, sensuality and fertility that comes with it. I guess weíll need to wait for those new episodes to see how well that all aligns with her too.

4. The Emperorv2
Authority, Structure, Foundation
(I had this card formerly as Godot. Cyrus Jong and HearTes have proposed a better fit. Thanks for your suggestions guys!)

The Emperor is the male counterpart to the Empress, focused on structural stability and wisdom learned from life experience, a much harsher and more authoritative teacher than the Empress, but with the same compassion hidden beneath. The Skull Knight is one of the most influential mentors in the story, one of the only characters who can aid Guts as a fellow struggler. Opposing the God hand for millennia. He takes what he has learned of his enemies and causality (a rigid structure he holds in high regard), and passes it on to the next generation.

Right, thatís all for now. I canít wait to get started on the rest when Iím next free. Some of these cards fit characters/events to a T (The Devil, The Tower, Justice), while others might prove to be real head scratchers. Hopefully his turns out to be a fun little activity. Let me know if you agree/disagree with what Iíve posted so far and thanks for reading :)

Working my way through a Narwhal Imperial Stout. Bought it on a whim when I didn't feel like getting a 6 pack ("surely this one 10 dollar drink has the combined quality of 6 regular drinks!") Regretting it now, it's like drinking a loaf of bread.

And they spelled Skull Knight's name wrong.

Wow that's phenomenal. Great job! That mix of stylised angularity and organic curves is an aesthetic I adore, and constantly try to achieve. You've nailed it here.

I was about to suggest adding some freckles, but then i checked the source and didn't see any. Weird, I could have sworn...EDIT: okay there are a few on her cheeks. Great, not going crazy.

Wow that transition cutscene is 'blink and you miss it'. I would have liked a bit more attention and love put into the metal plates sliding out of armour and locking around Guts face. The beserker growls are also totally different to how I imagined it. But I agree those are some killer animations. They've really captured the feel of the character and it looks like it'll be excellent gameplay, and that's what counts.

Amazing what a splash of colour can do to a picture. The strength in the distinction between her skin and "clothes" is something you can't pull off in a black and white medium. It's like i'm seeing the character for the first time again. Awesome job!

They did get two small details right, I was surprised to see. He emits fog when he transforms, which promptly disappears, but hey, progress! And his red eye has a light-tracing effect when he moves, which calls to mind the Hill of Swords fight, even though the purpose of that effect in the manga was to show how fast he was moving.

This is also the first time I've seen Zodd with black fur like Miura's more recent artwork as well, which I appreciate.

Overall it is a shame Zodd's been slowed down. But I imagine the developers want to cover the broadest range of attack styles they can. And a big, slow tank character fit Zodd more than anybody else. Personally I would have gone with Grunbeld to fill that niche, but they'd be fools to include him in lieu of the much more recognisable Zodd.

On an unrelated note, i'm enjoying the voice acting so far. I mean, we only get like 2 lines a video. But they're doing a really good job channelling each of the characters.
