Vagabond / Re: Favorite Vagabond Moments (use spoilers tags)
« on: June 29, 2009, 11:05:23 PM »
First of all, nice thread!

Dont have the books since Im at moms place, but therefore its easier to not spoil anything.
Favorite moments (for now):

Musashi discussing the "way of the sword" with people at a certain dojo..

Takezo holding his broken bokken, still willing to continue the fight with them Seijuro guys at the dojo, not just that part, but this is the first image I get in my mind whenever I think about that episode.

More to come..

Please do, that'd be great. Considering Musashi's affinity for the arts, both in Vagabond and in life, I'd love to get the creative juices flowing in here. Some sort of art section or thread ("Drawing with Water"? =) and maybe our own drawing board.

Will post it as soon as my scanner's fixed :serpico:
I'm also drawing Miyamoto by hand For some reason Sasaki Kojiro became my 1st favorite charcter, that's why I decided to draw him first. Please don't kill me.

Do as you like, but feel free to make one just about that movie. I'd like to hear more about it and why it reminds you of Vagabond. Maybe it'll spur the discussion about other media that reminds us of Vagabond and Berserk.

Done. It'd be great to discuss media that have a Vagabond touch in it, even if just a little. I also hope you guys have some advice on other movies I should see.

It's a bit different with Vagabond though because he'll do 9 issues in 9 weeks and then you know you're in for a couple of months off before getting a similar bounty, so it's very much like getting a new volume anyway when it's time. You don't get it all at once, but you get a steady diet, so it just keeps you from reading it all in one sitting.

I gues reading it episodically let's you understand the fact that the hero may or may not win/lose/die in the next battle or whatever, that's also the case with Berserk. But then again, I want to have a couple of chapters to read as I'm always craving for more everytime I finish reading one.

Vagabond / Movies that reminds me of Vagabond
« on: June 17, 2009, 12:31:02 PM »
This should be a thread to list anything, movie, manga or even anime that reminds you of Vagabond. I would love to hear your thoughts, as I'm sure there are a lot of movies out there I have yet to see.
I'm traveling a lot to Asia, especially Malaysia, Hong Kong and Japan. And I sure wanna spend a grand on must see movies next time I'm in Asia. If theres something you suggest and it's not related to Vagabond, please PM me, or post it in another thread.

Since I'm a huge fan of Hong-Kong movies, and watch anything Asian, be it Johnnie or Ryuhei Kitamura movies, a friend of mine asked me to get my hand on a Korean movie, "Fighter in The Wind", or "Baramui Fighter" as it's called some places.
I was bored the day I got back from Malaysia 3-4 years ago, and I decided to watch this movie, before giving it to my friend. And after only a minute I was completely dragged in! For those who want to see the movie first, I suggest you to do it, and then come back and read further. I will not spoil the plot, I will just point out things that reminds me of Vagabond and vice versea.

-Baramui Fighter is not a sword/katana movie, but it is a sort of, "way of the samurai" movie if you know what I mean. Choi Bae Dal is the protagonist. The movie is set after the end of WWII, or in the last of it, this was the
first thing I thought about after I read Vagabond.

-Bae Dal is a "dojoyaburi". it means he challenges a dojo's sensei.

-A guy tries to rob him, but then join him. This guy is a joke basically. I can say he somehow did remind me of someone...

-Bae Dal challenges someone later and lose...

-He thinks a lot of a chick called Yoko.. But, NO! He must focus on his training.,,

-He train and develop his own style, and he even climb the mountains.... Now this is something.

-Then he comes back much stronger and less "wild" even though he looks like an animal...

Now I don't remember everything in the movie, since it's been ages I first saw this movie. But seriously, go see it. It doesn't contain long heavy fight scenes, but the fight scenes are rather realistic, short and brutal. So don't expect Crouching Tiger style fight scene.

That's actually Rachel McAdams. :guts:

But she looked so much like her. Btw, I heard rumours that Paris Hilton was going to have a role in it. So much for being a fan of his movie, this one looks... But I could be wrong, and maybe I change my mind and enjoy the movie... If I ever decide to watch it.

Gamer looks fun :guts:

Being a big fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his incredible Sherlock Holmes novels, I was not expecting Robert Downey in the movie at all. The trailer reminded me of The Mummy and Indiana Jones trailers. And it looks even more childish. But maybe the movie is for younger audience... And Natalie Portman?? In stockings? What the fuck is going on?!

Vagabond / Re: New readers (use spoiler tags)

Not for the anime, I don't think. The manga is written specifically for mature readers, though, so you may want to wait a few years before showing him any of it.

He has already read 3 volumes after Golden Age. But I sensed that he understands that it's not the right time for him to read it. He also play Berserk games on DC and PS2, but that is ok with me. What is not ok, is that he recently purchased Battle Royale, which he also shouldn't read.

Why's that? Is it because of the 2-3 weeks you normally have to wait for an episode to be released? If so, it gets easier with time. I've been reading Berserk like this for over 5 years now and I'm pretty used to it.

No, not because of the waiting time, but having less Berserk material to read. So this time I won't read Berserk until new year (I also consider it a test). I did follow it episodically 2 years ago, but not anymore, I usually wait for 2 episodes. Except this time...

Whoa, a prodigy! :isidro: :guts:

"Once you pop, you can't stop" Right? In fact, I'm re-reading it from volume six now along with Berserk. Btw Im also drawing Sasaki Kojiro, maybe I'll post it around here sometime.

Haha, cures what ails ya, also a good inspiration during exercise I've found, "Let me see if I can get as exhausted as Musashi fighting 70 men!" =)

Yeah, I felt exactly like when I watch Zoros fights in One piece, "To face one who is extraordinary, I can't allow myself to be ordinary". :guts:

I was thinking we should have a spoiler rating system, for example, that's a spoiler for anyone that hasn't read volume 25 yet, so maybe we should have a "25+" next to it indicating not to look unless you've read volume 25 or above?

Good idea, neat things are happening right now..

It even runs in the family, and that's pretty impressive considering how much broad appeal Berserk has in addition to the character/story stuff.

I hear you, man. But 13, is a bit young don't you think? Berserk was the first real hardcore anime he watched.

I haven't, but I'd like to see it if it reminds you of Vagabond. As with Berserk, I'm interested in all such film connections. By all means, make a thread about it for the Inn.

There are a good deal of movies, anime and even books that reminds me of both Berserk and Vagabond. But I can't come of anything else at the moment, but will open a thread as soon as I remember more.

I was just re-reading it last night before bed, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Hope to see your insights and reactions in the new release threads to once you're fully caught up!

I will hold my breath at least until the end of this month, and enjoy reading it more than 10 minutes. (I regret that I read all Berserk episodes)

I ordered every single released Vagabond volumes (viz versions) from  amazon 3 months ago, and read them all in 4 days as soon as I recieved them. Well, I was ill with a heavy throat infection, but that was a good thing since it gave me time to read Vagabond.
Simply amazing manga! My kid brother is 13 and he likes it even more than Berserrk!

Now I don't know if anybody has seen "Fighter in The Wind", but it kinda reminded me of the movie.

Can't wait to get volume 29!

If they were to make another anime adaptation of Berserk, they wouldn't keep the old soundtrack. Hellsing Ultimate has a different soundtrack than the first Hellsing anime.

That was not my point. I'm absolutely aware that Hellsing Ultimate has different soundtrack. But I think it would be nice to either keep it, or just sort-of-remake it (I know, that would be a sin) and stick to the dark electronic music type. Or simply, if there's no other way, do something new and different. I know it's impossible anyone to be even close to Susumu Hirasawa. Anyway, it's too early to discuss it, and I really shouldn't have brought it up.

Wow! First of all, let me congratulate everyone with Kentarō Miura samas reply (I know Im late). is indeed the best Berserk forum, and we are indeed honored (and lucky) to get response at all. Great efforts from Pualla and Walter, and Grovels 9 old year daughter who took time to make a bookmark for Mr. Miura, and I would like to thank everyone else I forgot to mention.

Too bad theyre not making another artbook. I really hope Miura San changes his mind, if he ever find out he has the time and capacity to do it.

Its great that Berserk is more than halfway its storyline. No someone might chime in and say that 10-15 years is a long time to Berserk to end, but hey, 10 years with Berserk is hell better than 5 years then nothing- and no more excitement for each episode, right? Right? And we ll look forward to other works from Kentarō Miura after Berserk is complete.

And it is also great that there is a posibility of a second season of Berserk anime, although I it is highly unlikely for reasons most of us know. But we will always welcome a new, remade Berserk anime that actually follows the manga (but ofcourse keep the soundtrack). (Remember Hellsing, and Hellsing Ultimate?).

Miuras response is gold, and like someone already said, the thank you reply shouldnt be pain to read and it shouldnt be too long. The thank you letter looks great as it is. Not too short, not too complicated, and not too long ofcourse. I dont know if other forums ever wrote Miura and got answered, I hope that Miura will know how much we appreciate it, and I hope he likes the thank you reply, and keep it close to his office, studio, or whatever.

Being sick of it is the point. You're supposed to be dismayed, revolted at it. That's what makes it emotionally powerful. Guts is powerless to stop it, and so is the reader. That's all the more reason not to find it "funny".

I can say I felt exactly like everyone did (btw I watched the anime before reading the manga). I was not only sick of it, but also more like, "Oh, common". I didn't say I laughed my ass off reading that part, but was more like "dissing" the looong rapescene. Long sex or rape scene ain't exactly my favorite thing to read, especially when I can understand that it is a rape scene by just reading a few pages. Call me child or incompetent of reading adult material or whatever. I'm just saying it was too many pages (imo). Just to make it clear, even if my opinion sucks, it's not a mutual opinion.

I have indeed missed a lot, like the scene where the Beherit sticks that priest and somehow gives him apostles attributes, thats just one of many things. I will re-read those episodes in just a second.

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 304

Because Ganishka was an apostle, and that Griffith is a member of the God Hand. I advise you to re-read those episodes for the details.

I already re-reading the whole thing from first book. I'm sure I've missed a lot.
Having 1001 mangas and animes that needs to be watched parallell with reading Berserk, I'm sure it will take more than a year.

Yeah because it's fucking hilarious, right? :schierke:

Again, don't kill me, but I was sick of it all. Not that I'm not adult enough to accept a rape scene, but I think it was a bit exaggerated. I'm not a big fan of hentai, you know, not that I am categorising it as a one, but I think it's enough for a rape scene to be a lesser scene. I mean, man, it wasn't long before that, that Casca was about to be raped by Wyald. But, that is not an objective opinion offcourse.

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 304

So basically you don't understand why things happened the way they did? I ask because I think it's made pretty clear in the concerned episodes (282 & 283). And Ganishka actually tried to attack Griffith but failed.

No, not why Ganishka felt the way he did Grifith presence. If I remember correctly, Ganishka was sort of shaking, which only gives me the understanding that he actually was scared. But Ganishka was also sort of "happy" or whatever (I don't know what word to use) to see Griffith. He was like a kid seeing a God or something like that. At least he was able to stand up and transform. He was going to attack Griffith, but didn't do anything at all, because he just couldn't, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if Griffith caused the wind, or if he knew it was Ganishka's weakpoint, but then again, maybe it was obvious...

Really dude, that's some kind of fucking joke to you? You make me sick.

No, I was just making fun of him and his rape scene. The rape scene was like a whole episode!

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 304
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:51:56 PM »
Well Griffith didn't use his sword against him, did he? And it's more complicated than Ganishka just being scared. He was crying with gratitude when he died.

Maybe scared isn't the right word to describe how he felt. But he couldn't do anything to Griffith, Ganishka was more like ice melting. I'm talking about their first encounter btw.

From what we've seen, it seems that Griffith physically transformed into Femto.

I hope we see more of his powers and abilities. All we've seen is his "defensive" counter attacks, and how good he was raping Casca XD.
But seriously, I hope we see a real fight with Femto. I don't care wether it's against Skullknight or Guts in his armor.

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 304
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:18:37 PM »
Wow, we finally got to see Femto! I really liked this episode. I hope thats the end of Ganishka. Please don't kill me, but I think I've had enough of him. A great character indeed, but he just wount die right! And why was he so scared of Griffith, when he himself said that his sword couldn't reach him?
I think its really annoying when Griffith is portraited as a saint, while Guts turning into his darkside, a monster that only thinks revenge.

I think Ganishka is the strongest apostle by far. I really enjoyed Zodd joining forces with Guts to fight Ganishka. Reminds me of Straw hats fight with Enel.
One thing I didnt quite understand, was Femto in his astral form? GOD! I'm waiting for the next episode like a child! (I am a child when it comes to waiting)

The artwork is getting exeptional with each episode! Can't wait to see the next arc. I'm also worried that the event it might effect Guts and the crew. Who knows, maybe Guts will see a glimpse of Femto.

I liked Claire personally. Not quite as annoying as Kate.

Agree, but Kate is a fugitive, which makes her a cooler character.

The not-dead Locke is the guy who was with Jacob. His opposite/great enemy/whatever.

I thought so too, one thing we never forget is when Locke explained the othello rules for Walt, game with 2 sides, dark and light. So it might just be a symbol for the game over The Island. But why couldnt he simply stab Jacob himself. And why did Jacob piss Ben off?

Don't hurt yourself with those questions. The bullshit about Aaron being extremely important and how he must be raised by Claire is probably long forgotten.

Btw, remember the guitar Jacob gave Hurley? Perhaps Charlie is...

The writers probably meant to do something big with it, then realized it was a stupid idea and decided to pass it off as just being some bullshit from Ben.

Anything but not the black box, its just a stupid thing to begin with. Maybe it would have something to do with Jack finding his father and Lockes to end the ting with his father etc etc.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: TV Series: Lost
« on: May 27, 2009, 02:21:14 PM »
I finally finished watching lost. A lot of action, and less fillers than usual. No more boring Jack, he finally grabbed a gun and "believed". I hope what he did was the right thing to do though. No Claire this season, which isnt negative thing. Ayways, the last episode did not completely explain "the incident", I mean we really didnt see anything but a flash of light in the end, which really is a crappy ending imo.
A lot of questions answered, but the answers brought more questions, who was that guy who were with Jacob? Who are the new good guys. Why are there two Lockes?
And btw, where are the other people who were taken by the others in the second season? (Cindy, with the 2 kids)
And wheres that old woman who told Jack what his tatoo meant, and wheres her group? And why where they wearing dharma suits, even though they were others. Everyone had to get back to the island, but what about Aaron and Desmond, both of them didnt return? Then maybe they wot be able to "save" everyone, because not everyone returned??
And why did Rusos friend try to kill her? Was he the monster too perhaps? But he was shot and most likely got killed.
And who the @&#! is the monster. I was convinced he was Yemi ::)
Maah, this turned out to be really crappy season. Maybe because of the Fringe crap they were busy with.
People on other forums are still discussing the "black box" metaphor, I just hope the creators do not actually make something out of it just to satisfy fans. And I dont know if anyone noticed that Jacob was an old man with beard with a deep voice (did anyone slo mo it?)

Good thing the 6th season will be the last of it.

Will Eisner. He created The Spirit in 1940 and is one of the fathers of US comic books.

I'd read the original first if I were you, but that's just me.

So does The Spirit movie tell everything from the beginning or what? Or is it like a new alternate beginning?
Also whats the best The Spirit comics to read?

Personally I'm still not over the way they're handling The Octopus.

I saw the trailer last week. Pretty cool. I read this comic when I was in Korea, I read just a part of it since I was in a rush (didnt buy it) and I couldnt remember the name of it, all I remembered was that it did remind me of Sin City and Batman. It came to me last week, and I googled Frank Miller bio, then theres was this blog with a link to the movietrailer- The Spirit. But then again, the style is much different from Frank millers work. But I love classics. The one I read was pretty cool with a batman comic as well. Whos the writer of this series anyway?

Now I dont know if I should read comics first or just watch the movie...

Hello everyone. Lets talk about Baccano!
I dont know if someone brought this up, so I guess its ok if I do.

I just finished watching Baccano! anime. Its a 13 episode, approximately 2o minutes episodes.. Anyways this series is not out yet on dvd anywhere but in Japan and Korea. I reccomend that you dont watch any previews or trailer before watching this magneficient anime so you dont spoil anything. I suppose someones already been posting Baccano on youtube- but for better quality you should look for them somewhere else.

To those whove already read the manga, I still reccomend that you watch the anime, because of the cool soundtrack and the superb animathion and drama.
Its a shame that there are only 13 episodes, I wanted to see like 25, but anyways- thats what makes it cool and special.
I wont say more, just go and see it.

I dont know why, but I kinda start to like the captains character..

Great episode by the way. That homothing with the fat guy wasnt nessesary. And yess, great move by Sayid

I realise they are trying tu brainwash us with the shit Michael is up to- so we forget about how desperate he was with the "He was my SSSSSSon" thing ; killing the two chicks earlier in the series. Lets just see what happens next. And I dont know why, but Im not interested in knowing what will happen to alex more than Im interested in knowing when the "oceanic six" will take off the island and what happens after, plus knowing what/who the damn monster is

Only 5 episodes left (for now), right?

I didnt get Kates babys name, some say it was Eric and others Aaron (as in Claires Aaron;) That makes me wonder if Jack knows it, or if he even knows that Claire is his halfsister.
