Huh, that's pretty odd, since don't most Musou games typically have 20+ playable characters in them?

Yes they usually have more playable characters, however, they're notorious for having weak first games. Look at the rosters for anything but they're usual dynasty or samurai warrior games and the roster and the actual game isn't that impressive. For example, One piece warriors 1 was awful, they took a HUGE step in the right direction with the second iteration, with both gameplay and character roster.

At least Berserk seems like it has the gameplay, definitely not the roster. You can also tell they took shortcuts in the movesets and animations (serpico tornado and femto tornado). With all that being said, we all know most of the SK forum will get the game because it caters towards this audience, but hopefully it will do good enough to justify a second part which Koei would hopefully take a big step in the right direction, meaning expanded roster, different animations, and movesets.

Yeah, if you blinked you missed it.

Plus his 'tornado special' isn't very special to begin with. They already showed Zodd doing something similar. Couldn't they have come up with anything that doesn't involve wind?  :mozgus:

Not even, the TGS Serpico gameplay showed one of his moves when he's powered up is the exact tornado :/

Ngl, I'm super salty that it's only 8 playable characters, I could've sworn they would've put Skull Knight in there :/

That's it, this was the reveal that made my hype go from 8/10 to officially 10/10,, they really went there. Offically hhhhhhyyyyyyyppppppeeeeeeeddddddddddddddddddddddddddd!

And not all characters have an actual "transformation" with different movesets. If they don't have an actual physical transformation, as we saw with the recent Guts gameplay, attacks will just be slightly altered by speed or some extra effects, but nothing as crazy as Griffith > Femto.

This confirms that the Skull Knight will be playable, guaranteed. I just wonder if they're going him horseback riding 100% of the time (which they should), and if they do, it can get sloppy because horseback riding on Dynasty Warrior games can feel wonky as hell. This would definitely make one of the coolest characters in the series play pretty bad, hopefully they'll figure it out.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that Femto isn't invincible, just for game's mechanics and balance sake. However, it would be pretty cool if he was invulnerable during his transformation, that'd be pretty broken tho...

I'm curious, would you guys have preferred Femto being in the game? Obviously, this game isn't going to be following the source material super closely lmao, but I actually prefer it this way. I want them to make as many characters playable as possible, even if it doesn't even make sense. I really like Femto's inclusion because you know he's going to be top tier and you're literally going to feel like a God after you've leveled Griffith up a bunch, to the point that you can stay in Femto form for a long time. I really hope they make his moveset memorable.

I can't wait to see Aazealh's reaction to this lmao! I'm betting on, total disgust, with a mix of "oh sure why not", if you're not going to follow the source material this closely, might as well go all out.

ps. HYPE!

I wanna respond to some of the footage we've seen so far.

Whoever was playing sure liked to mash □□□

To be fair, the games aren't super deep in terms of combat. What's more, if they were playing with a low level character they would've had a smaller move set. But man, it reminded me that watching Musou games is far less entertaining than playing them.

Also, I can't tell if the Super meter in the bottom left is supposed to be The Beast's eye motif, or a Batarang...

Playing them is a lot more fun than watching for sure, but if this has the same gameplay mechanics as one piece warriors 3 you'll be able to start an attack string > dash > continue the attack string, vs start the attack string > dash > start all over from the first square attack. This is a big deal as it makes the combat run a lot smoother. I also THINK you'll be able to cancel attack animations with R1 or the crossbow/cannon attacks etc.

Usually in one piece warriors, R1 was meant to be pressed after the last hit of an attack string so that you would cancel the lag animation (even tho some would look pretty cool). You would also dash after an R1 attack to close the gap between you and the enemies. Newer players won't know how implement these things so it's understandable if all they're doing is spamming square.

So for example: square, square, triangle (lag) vs square, square, triangle-R1 (shoots arrows) > dash > square square etc.

Idk why those timestamps were off for me. Casca gameplay started at 6:58:00 for me.

This game's so littttttttt. I'm so hyped man, the difference for it being 8/10 hype to 10/10 hype is obviously the characters they introduce, the more broken apostles they make playable the better obviously. From what I can tell, the combat resembles that of one piece warriors 3, which is the best koei tecmo combat IMO thus far. I know I'm a totally biased musou nerd, but I hope people can appreciate why I like the genre when they play this game.

It's not about difficulty, but the feeling of progression you make over time and the adrenaline rush you get when you're stomping through ppl that you were originally taking forever to take down, the different play styles that each character offer, and pushing them to their limits even if you know they're on the weaker tier of the cast (looking at you Judeau). I've started to hold off on playing as the obvious God-like characters in these games because once you do, it's kinda hard to go back to playing the weaker characters, but idk how much I could hold off on playing as Zodd and inevitably Skull Knight ugh, can't wait!

Even if Sengoku Basara isn't a Musou game. It's made by Capcom not KOEI. About One Piece, yeah it's considered as Musou since it's made by Koei

I get what you mean tho.

No of course, but it still falls into the musou genre, just like that NIS bleach game, a new FATE STAY NIGHT game, and other obscure games. 1 vs 1000+ = musou genre. While Koei has stepped up their game (no pun intended) with their gameplay mechanics, Sengoku Basara really outshines everything that they do IMO. I love how Sengoku Basara has these niche things that each character can exploit like roll cancelling being effective with some characters and each character have these very nuanced "secrets" that aren't really explained and as a community you have to figure out. I also like the idea of being able to have moves readily available and no penalty in using them if you want to use them in succession, versus having to hit square 4x and then triangle.

I think a Berserk musou game with Sengoku Basara would be even more hype, but Koei will do fine.

Since I have never played any of these games I will reserve my pre-release judgement although I certainly see how it could end up being redundant. However, I was wondering if anyone here can tell me if there is any sort of challenge to these games. I would hate to effortlessly smash on Apostles and hordes of enemies without any sort of difficulty. I usually have to tune new games up to the highest level to get any sort of joy out of playing so if this is going to be a simple button masher ala God of War I will probably lose interest quickly, outside of the novelty of seeing the badass characters.

Exactly what both DANGERDOOOOM and Aazealh posted. It's not about the "difficulty" per say but the carrot that's going to keep you going is leveling up to kill enemies that you could kill before faster, to beat stages faster, to play in a difficulty that you could not play before, etc. you're basically one up'ing yourself and the depth comes from the different play styles and moves that the characters offer.

In a devil may cry game the thing that's most important is your execution, while in these games it's the least important although it still matters. I think that Sengoku Basara and One piece warriors 3 are one of the best musou games because they're not brain dead and have some executional gameplay depth to them. I think Berserk will offer cancel your animations with grenades/arrows or a dash, which gives the shallow gameplay SOME depth unlike traditional Dynasty Warrior games.

But yea, basically it all comes down to doing what you did before, but more effecient, basically mopping the floor against the AI so hard that you feel like a God cuz it's almost game breaking.

Ughh im so hyped!

As an all around gamer and a huge Dynasty Warriors musou fan, words can't express how hyped I am that Koei Tecmo actually did this. With that being said, I understand why some people might be disappointed because it won't be a one to one experience when it comes to the manga transitioning to a video game. I read some people on gamefaqs complaining that it's not realistic for Guts to kill the amount of enemies that you will be killing in this game, and while I agree, it's better than not having a game at all. Koei Tecmo has seen a lot of success with making games using the fan service of other IP's and while it isn't a one to one transition, it makes a lot of sense. I even remember you guys mentioning it in a podcast as someone else pointed out on this thread.

I think our best chance for the most representative Berserk experience in a game would be the hack n slash genre ala devil may cry, the modern ninja gaiden games, bayonetta, God of War, etc. Platinum Games would be an excellent choice, but they've been slacking hard on their latest games for whatever reason. Those games have a deep and extremely fun combat system, not an excessive amount of enemies, and require a lot of skill to be really good at, portraying Guts and Berserk as a whole more accurately. Another genre I had in mind was a very mature "tales of" game where you have a party, level up, learn new skills etc.

My hype, and ultimately, my experience with this game will depend on how deep they make the combat and how many characters they put in. I'm not looking for super accurate cut scenes etc. although the more fan service the better, I just want them to nail feeling of being powerful and just wrecking things apart with a semi-deep combat system.

So far the best Koei Tecmo game per character has been one piece warriors 3. For every square you press you have up to 2 triangles to follow up with and 3 triangles if you're powered up/transformed. Compared to the usual Dynasty Warriors which they try to make up their depth by adding more characters, however this makes ultimately makes the combat pretty shallow.

I really look forward to this game and I really want to hear and read everybody's opinion on it. I know dynasty warrior games don't have have the best reputation, but I have a blast playing them. They might not be the deepest, smartest, or the best presented, but they scratch an itch that no other genre does, especially when they combine it with my favorite franchises of all time. The main reason why I play these games is to feel powerful and hopefully the combat resembles that of one piece 2 and 3, where there is some animation cancelling and other things to the combat to add depth to the game. I was always hoping this day would come, but I never thought it actually would.

Podcast / New podcasts?

While i know the podcasts were mainly revolved around berserk since...hell, it's the official berserk podcast lol I actually really did enjoy when you guys would talk about video games, movies, and other things that you guys were doing or had thoughts on.

Regardless of the combination of this extensive berserk drought and probably being really busy with your daily lives is there any selfish chance that you guys will do any kind of new podcasts regarding video games, movies/shows, and any other things worth talking about? Or are you guys putting the podcasts to a stop until a new berserk episode comes out? A Breaking Bad podcast would be nice, again just curious. Thanks for taking the time to entertain me and others, they have been nothing but great.

ps. please don't judge me because of my username i made it when i was around 16 years old. Even then it's still pretty bad lack of judgement lol...

my opnion (not that anybody cares lol) on the DS is that it has more powers than it looks...i mean theres been some hints that the DS is not a normal weapon (besides it being HUGE and physically impossible for a normal human to wield)

when shericke (sp? lol sorry) offered guts the lightning axe he turned it down saying that he wanted to fight with a weapon that he was already used to thats the first hint.

the second "hint" is that somewhere in the manga it says that the DS started to have a strange deadly or black aura (something like that) and that it wasn't a normal weapon, it was something to that extent.

and the third "hint" and more obvious hint that everybody already knows about is that from killing so many etheral beings the sword has a level of "magic" i guess and can hurt etheral beings unlike a normal sword (ex: gashinka (sp?))

so yea....that's why i think that the DS is going to have SOME kind of important use in the future of this manga to kill the god hand or other more powerful etheral beings, or the sword might be able to transform like SK's and have a badass power like with a swing of the DS it sends everybody into a black hole or has a cutting range of miles O_O...well yea lets leave it to kentarou....

and the guts teaming up with zodd is something i can't see  doubt a lot that's going to happen becuz i think guts will eventually have his duel with zodd to see who is better and eventually guts will win and thats not going to happen while they're best buddies unless zodd betrays him or something.

from the way i see it he got fricken owned by the lightning guy lol. but i really doubt that he's out for the count. and guts should have the right to kill him.
