Walter, the "dub" comment was just thrown in to avoid reviving an entire two month old topic over something that actually did fit in with what I was going for (localization process in general, vs something that didn't even start out as a discussion on the new VAs?...) but what have you.

Regarding Jay, I think a lot of people read too much into my statement at the end, being more directed at his website/title/..knitting profession than say, a knock on his actual contribution to the film which up until the clips I had no concept to comment on.
A clip was posted earlier showing free play, but I prefer this one as its actually some insight into what you -might- see reflected in the film.
All in all I'm sure they'll get some accuracy out of the deal. One interesting thing about western vs Japanese swordsmanship (beyond "western armor/swords") is how they were taught. Western swordsmanship is pretty much left up to open interpretations of old manuals that have to basically be retranslated/reworked (you see Jay holding one in a free play session) I had a different video attached, but I feel this better shows my experience with ARMA/medieval sf. guilds,
That's pretty much all you have to go by.
And if anyone's curious, Poleaxe>all. There's seldom a (melee) medieval weapon that is so versatile as that thing.

Anyways, an area I'm ironically far more familiar with, Japanese swordsmanship tends to be passed down via the Koryu, which is a transmission from Soke to Soke, some make revisions, but it kind of goes in the polar opposite of the scholar-concept in play in most ARMA and western swordsmanship guilds today.

Ironically? There's quite a lot of case where I felt "same thing". There are definite similarities in certain stances, kata/parries/repostes and even footwork from time to time. Maybe there's only so many ways you can kill a man with a weapon?

Actually came back to SK to get a better feel for what was going on with the project. I have to say I'm still very much looking forward to it. I see (not just from SK) some small disinterests/disappointment in 4c's direction/cgi usage, but meh, I feel grateful this is even happening, plus the chance of getting it in a theater is awesome, though I gather it'll be as limited as those Evangelion 2.0/Knockin On Heaven's Door screenings.

I know another thread was discussing dubbing, and isn't WB somehow involved? I doubt mediablasters gets picks this time, and I'm hoping we get some great voice acting out of it. Not much of a fan of watching it in its "native" language anymore than a Leone's Spaghetti Westerns. Speaking of...westernization,

Most..interestingly, this seems to be the guy they're leaving all their "Swordwork" up to,

And in general, I doubt localization will happen anytime soon. I doubt they are shooting out films 1-2-3 back to back (could be wrong?), and judging by the rebooted Eva's pace, it could be a long wait. I suppose I'm hoping too much to get my hands on any black swordsman arcs (pending they happen) before 2020?
Need my rocking chair.

Video Games / Re: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3&XBOX360)
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:54:11 PM »
Final Fantasy XIII would have made my "disappointments of all year, every year" list if it wasn't for the fact I called it back on its first trailer for riding the FFVII gravy train. The game was terribad, honestly. Its only because of the tried and true FF battle system (therein forcing me to grind) I found any playability in the damn thing. XIII versus new trailer made me think
"Dad's Minivan: Sasuke edition-featuring Kingdom Hearts". With FFXIV 4.0ing and Square already milking a XIII-2 (...To think I actually had to type that) this series will probably be dead in the water to me, forever more. At least XII was a beautiful swan song despite them trashing most of Matsuno's ideas.

After that, they'll remake FFVII with 80% cutscenes just to make money (or something with a sellout feeling) and Gackt will face model everyone, even Barret and Marleen.

I was not a huge fan of ME1's gameplay.
ME2 was a lot better to me overall. More likeable characters, dialogue, and gameplay even though the story faulted compared to ME1.

Yes, the story in  ME1 was well crafted, but my biggest complaint has been the plain-as day influences (Green Lantern, Farscape, SW, ST, etc etc...) However, in the same language my biggest appraisal is how they streamline all that -for a video game- and more importantly make it enjoyable with a rich cast of characters and dialogue. ME1 felt far too repetitive and I honestly had the hardest time liking anybody in my crew except for Wrex. I only managed to actually care for the game once "shit got real".
ME2 faired slightly better but at the very least had more synergy between characters than ME1 (plus no elevator to hell)
I do get the feeling Griffith had about "dumbing down" a sequel when I finally got to play DA:O ultimate. I honestly have fun with this game (even when the same above applies) and I feel that FFXII style combat is its charm, however...

Looking at DA2, I just see "Dynasty Warriors: Dragon Age edition" and I'm honestly concerned about its direction. ME2 might have gone the gears route, (..which was a good game: Haters incorporated) but the DW route? Ugh I hope I'm being too rash.

Back to ME2..I do wish the writer for ME1 would come back for the finale, but that's not happening.

Search turned up nothing, though its possible I missed it.

Friend sent me a link of a band (therein Highlord) that has made quite an obvious Berserk homage.

For those who cannot stomach metal/(or understand European "Fishmaster" grunting) here are the lyrics.

this world man's destiny is controlled
By some transcendental entity or law
At least man knows that he has no control
Over his own will

On the day the hawk fell
You saw your love betrayed
A new order to enslave the world
And for you a new battle to fight

We are the darkness, your own race
We taste the flesh of your comrades
No, I won't surrender
Your heart is ours, your blood is ours
The brand will grant you no escape

Angels or demons? Apostles of death

Bloody trails veil my dreams
By the sword of the Berserk
But I know I will be free
From the demons that hunt my soul

On the road you walk in silence
There's only darkness by your side
The roots of evil grow and thrive
In the world that mankind's created
The traitor was your brother
Once he led you to the stars
Now you wield your sword in battle
Just to claim your vengeance in blood

The world has been damned, do we have to die?

We have only one chance
Fighting or dying
In this burning hell called earth
Last son of the hand of God
Traitor of love...
You married hate to my soul...

"I am the flesh....
Ambrosia for the immortal ones"
Come into my flame...
My violent desire
"You tear apart...
The human pleasure from it's cradle"
I order your ruin...
Killer of passions...
"Better death
Than your damned fire"
I devour your essence...
On your body my perversion
"Better the sword
Than your claws on my breast"
Settle your mortal senses
To my cruel will...

Now that i can understand regarding ME2.

As far as implications, exactly my point. The specifics highly point to in-game occurrences. Somebody suggested this is a possible "bad end" scenario or Shepard will back to the future himself to give Batman preptime.

All I know is there is nothing in the franchise thus far that hints at success against such an event beyond Deus Ex Machina, which highly worries me in regards to a quality end.

Excited about Storm.  I think they have like 8 more characters to reveal? Plus DLC? This game is nuts.  Holding out for Pheonix Wright and Haggar.  I'll buy two if either of them make it in.
Phoenix Wright's been deconfirmed quite a bit. They struggled with his concept in TvC. He would have fit very well in that but most devs agreed his moveset was problematic (Briefcase attack+objection?....) so more than likely combined with the deconfirm, PW just isn't much of a fighter.

Haggar is pretty much all but confirmed. Screen leaked with him and a bit of a blue "helmet" in the background (perhaps Megaman)

There's a leaked roster that so far has been accurate (She Hulk, C. Viper, Zero, and Frank West is almost certainly confirmed). Haggar and classic mega are among them.

what makes the list speculative, Howard the Duck.

Spoiler tagging for trailers?..Well ok,
The death tally is fucking WEAK. 7 million in 7 days? I mean didn't Sovereign nearly wipe out the citadel by himself in a matter of hours? I'd imagine at least half the Earth's population in that time, assuming the reapers have other priorities than evaporating Earth.

I was pretty much under the premise that the game series entire premise was that if reapers ever did land, we were screwed. Now this kind of turns it into another Halo 3/finish the fight scenario. Still was a fun trailer, but somewhat lackluster in its promise.

Wow, such hate against the TV show. I know there has to be an opposing wave to every popular thing, but..

"Take out the zombies, and who would watch this?"

Doesn't taking out a key element of a story you know, do that?

:The Good, the Bad, The Ugly
Take out the wild west and who would watch this! It's a boring civil war film!

Take out the mutants and who would read this! It's malcom X vs MLK!

Take the Super out of the man and who wou...etc etc

Being a bit of an ass, but despite the whole "we know drama" take on this, zombies are still a central theme and quite well done in the show. There's nothing done on the zombie side of things that's heretic to the medium or the book other than ratio of drama/brains.
Something about Daranbot's film direction made this a lot better than the comic to me, which was -really-, and I mean -really- hard for me to get more than a passing joy out of. This literally felt like a History of Violence again, much better than its graphic novel piece.

That said, him firing the writers makes sense to me. I'm more than open to acknowledging the show had some bumps in the road and way too much drama at times, but was still damn good entertainment. Hopefully now that they have launched their "pilot" (..the entire first season) we'll see if season 2 improves any down the road or if the zombie medium has finally reached complete global saturation.

Got the CE (pre ordered it when it was announced)
To those with pros and cons for the $100 price tag,

The artbook, case, and challenge maps/DLC and making of DVD are all the substandard fare you get with all CEs these days. The big subject of play though is the batarang. I use the math that a standard CE (RE: SF4 or DMC4 etc...) run about $70-$80, so it all comes down to whether or not the batarang itself is worth the $20-$30 pricetag...

At first glance, I mistook the scratches on my batarang to be from damage, but saw it was intentionally done. As already announced, it's plastic and not metal, which is what it should be for that amount. It is -not- an exact replica of the in-game batarang, regardless what Rocksteady/DC/Eidos is saying. And as mentioned by the pre release notes, it is mounted and cannot come off.

Summary: The CE itself is nice, but the batarang (your whole MO for getting it) is heavily over priced. Still, I don't think if you -really- are a huge Batman fan you'd be terribly concerned with over-pricing on collector's items.

Game Review:
No spoilers whatsover (other than previous announced -gameplay- features) but I fucking love it.

Best comic book game/batman game/GOTY material ad naseum etc. Combat is freaking awesome and there are many stealth aspects thrown in for a change of pace. Visually, I like all the character designs and the arkham landscape. The voice acting is (again) nostalgic. Gordon is the only one I'm not too fond of, granted, I felt Oldman is the only person to do him Justice in the past 30-40 years?

The only major thing I have to say rubs me is that the influences can come off a bit strong at moments. Bioshock tone is a bit over-riding at parts. Both due to Unreal engine useage and inspiration for atmosphere (IE, interview tapes/color scale etc). Thankfully Bioshock 2 is not being released this year, or I would find it to be overkill.
Finally, have to say there's a missed opportunity with some of the forensic aspects, as they basically boil down to "SCAN THIS ONE OBJECT METROID STYLE, OH FUCKKKKKKKK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH EVIDENCE" and you'll get a fingerprint or something in all of a nanosecond (wayne-tech just kicked in etc).

Instead of having to inspect different pieces of evidence, compile them and continue the investigation, it just creates a flowing trail for you to follow to the next story arc. Honestly, they should have taken hints from Condemned on this and not Metroid Prime. The riddles are -far- better at conveying Batman's critical thinking, which are more sidequests than main-game.

Other than those nags (and as I've heard sure to come, final boss) it's a fucking awesome game.

Whether or not you can fully enjoy it and not be a Batman fan I think is highly subjective, screw Gamestop or IGN for telling you otherwise. (Sorry, if you don't find a game's story/characters/universe slightly compelling, are you -really- going to enjoy the game?...come on now)

random return to post on this...
+One of the best games I've had/played as co-op.
+_~~~Decent~~~_wrapping up of a 13+ year old VG franchise (more below)
+Dem. Biceps.
+I liked Sheva To be honest, Claire/Ada/Jill came out about 11+ years ago, and Ashley?..
+Some QTEs were nice.
+WESKERRRRRRRR! I'm referencing mercenaries, kids. Its such an..awkward moment seeing Wesker revive Chris, or Chris scream as he's "dying". Holy fuck. What is this..I don't even..
+Jill Valentine..oh for fuck sakes, do we have to spoilertag this? The internet ruined it for me two months ago, the world should share my spoiler ragewas back See below
+Duo mercenaries is a blast
+Threesome ending is canon. "IT WAS WORTH IT"
+Live action promo ads.
+Visuals/Sound etc etc

-Did not wrap up main RE story as well as I had hoped.. Lots of buildup that was even featured in RE5 profiles was left unresolved, and the Wesker neo-nazi/..clone attitude seemed/was OOC. I know Mikami was not on this project and maintains Alan Moore dissociation syndrome, but there was a mixed feeling with its wrap up.
-Some of the technical co-op elements, weapon exchanges, invite status etc needed work
-Chris BOULDER SMASH..yet hurts his hands on Wesker's face. The fuck Wesker? For a minute there I think he dropped that Neo attitude and dropped back to code veronica Terminator status
-Is RE over now? Reboot? Seriously? I thought that was Devil May Cry/Onimusha/4. What the hell now?

Do you call American/Western entries Biohazard and Japanese entries Resident Evil?

I do agree about the wayne>batman focus factor in the movie, you've got to take into account the general lack of "bruce" since Burton's piece, sure in every movie there's something about his "love life" or conflicting interests, but never about the man himself to any degree Begins displayed. The way I took it was "let bruce have his moment in Begins, after that it'll be more of a duality/emphasis on "batman" (again, why TDK is very iffy for me in terms of what it can do and what it might do)

And I agree with the fight scenes, they were very "Zoomed in/chaotic" (though some either by denial or actual account claim this is done to be more in the eyes of "real combat" and less cinematic, w/e), so hopefully this is an issue Nolan's taken into account for TDK. Just from the trailer alone, it looks a lot more organized to me in its action pieces than BB even when chaotic, but again that's just me.

Also sadly, we have to realize being what Batman has been successful since 1989(ish) was selling merchandise, which is also why I'm iffy about TDK. It's a question of how much Nolan is going to
A)go for fan support-dedicated Batman film
B)listen to WB about how many action figures he has to sell and "kid friendly" he has to keep the film.

Either way its up for grabs. I actually don't let things like hype get to me much, but I am rather excited about it, so hopefully it'll make this revamp of the franchise fresh.

Ah yes, the 30s ULTIMATE VIGILANTE gun-packing "detective".
I liked Begins much the same (loved initial, cooled down to a "pretty good" but thats with any movie for me). I like Keaton-esque "Batman" more in terms of design to the Batman image itself, but I disliked Keaton's Wayne greatly where as the trade in of Bat/Wayne for Bale was spot on for me. But it really does ride on TDK if its a complete "reboot" of the franchise or if it goes the way of the Pirates movies.

Back on topic,
I found Batman Begins disappointing, and the actor's death is more likely to perturb the experience rather than enhance it to me.
May I ask how? (Not a "why/what" statement, just any particular reason/s?) I mean as a movie it was ok, I don't really see any valid points as a stand-alone movie to elevate it into cinema, but as a comic book/batman film it was fantastic imo. I don't know, I've been a fan since I was a kid (not just of movies). Batman Begins gave us fans quite a bit, a lot of long halloween (my personal fave Batman book) and year one influences, combined with some pretty good casting (sans...Holmes, my one nag with the movie) and a return from Joel's "bat nipple" era and away from Keaton's "badass Batman"...I dunno, it was more than enough for me.

As for ledger, like all celebrity moments, forum-stir and Nancy Grace once again dissecting some olsen twin murder conspiracy or (whatever?) is going on now I've already lost the RIP edge and am more "lets move on now" phase. Hopefully his act as the Joker is a great farewell is all I can say.

kinda resurrecting a dead post here but the release date is in 3 days si?

Somebody brought it to my attention in December and I had no idea what the hell it was, but they showed me a concept (or theoretical?) image of the monster.
compare to
complete with sinspawn and everything (the smaller monsters). I wish I was lying, but I almost fell out of my chair with the thoughy of J.J Abrams playing FFX and going "...what if we let Sin loose...INTO NEW YORK."

however, this is probably the actual monster (The whole "DASHES THROUGH BUILDINGS" thing kinda took out the sin concept imo)

I like the Sin knock-off better. I personally think the "giant unknown monster terrorizing modern city with no way of stopping it" has such fucking potential. However its usually ruined by disappointing special effects or "heroes save the day" thing. Ok I'll get to the point, I want a genuine terrifying gut wrenching Cthulhu movie.

He lies dreaming... =/

All those guys have completely undeserved egos.
Speaking as a martial artist (coming from the best ever, with no ego etc etc etc) almost every "Hollywood" action/martial art star has had a massive ego to contend with, only multiplying that image by reaching out to a mass audience that way. Not that there's essentially anything wrong with the idea and I haven't ran into a single person (fighter or otherwise) who thought they couldn't beat up another man when the chips are down, but those above are notorious for theirs. Norris above anyone annoys the hell out of me. See his thoughts on religion and its enough to make you bite your tongue.

As for topic+Rambo, dear God. Seeing this trailer on TV was enough for me to laugh out loud, remembering First Blood as a kid and the whole "THIS IS ABOUT VIETNAM VETERANS" and eventually shifting into "Our hearts to Afghanistan, you're fighting such an oppressive regime =/" sentiments have finally died down in a favor of outdoing Rambo (FB2) body count by over nine thousand. Huge Success I say.

Yes, I will be watching it.

How bout Guts? or Ryu Hayabusa?

Though if Guts isnt a guest character(which he probably wont be) with the developers offering more customization options you will most likely be able to make him.
That was pretty much the case already with SC3. Being that Siegfried (as GNM pointed out) is already a FUSION-HA of Guts/Griffith, there's really no need for them to go and get Guts, and after Paris Hilton themed parties featuring Outkast and Star Wars tie-ins, I don't think Namco cares more about its influences /fan options versus how it makes money.
Anyways, SCIV/SSBB/MGS4/DMC4/NMH have my interests. As far as FFs, don't care at all about XIII, but XII remains my favorite thus far.

When I was some type of.... uh, a young kid(forget years?) was at a babysitter's house and we had just watched home alone so we spent an entire evening trying to set up traps in his already deadly backyard, ropes, gas and matches, paint cans...oh man.

Got into a big fight when I was about ten or so in New York Some kid had been hassling me and of course everybody was anticipating action. Playground was on top of a hill overlooking a road which in turn overlooked another hill which lead to a barb-wire fence separating the base from the highway+Verrazano Bridge. Started out with him punching me and then grappling and rolling me off the first hill and then him landing smack dab on the road. Got pissed off even more cause I scraped my knee up on the hill pretty bad and thus started wailing on him till I sent him reeling off over the next little hill. However instead of peacefully rolling down a more smooth plain he hit a lot of rocks and wound up hitting the barb wire fence real hard and (either faked it or seriously was) got knocked out for about five minutes. Felt like A Christmas Story, imminent ass owning for kicking some other kid's ass who might go tell mommy and daddy.

Sure there's more but eh running dry atm.
