Video Games / Re: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
« on: August 27, 2010, 07:33:08 PM »
To me this talk of clones is plain retarded, just like the word "metroidvania" itself (that some people even use to designate Super Metroid nowadays, what a fucking joke). I mean are we still talking about Rogue-likes or Doom-likes? Is Crysis 2 a Wolfenstein 3D clone? And it's not like God of War invented 3D beat 'em ups in the first place. Emulating some elements or even a general formula from a title is a compliment more than anything else.

Games have always taken things from one another, it's nothing new and it's not limited to the medium either. Should a Castlevania game avoid having 3D whip action just because it's similar to Kratos' weapons? It could, but what a waste it would be. It'd go against common sense and for what sake? The same goes for the rest (e.g. some people say the new footage resembles Shadow of the Colossus). What matters is whether it's well-done and has its own identity, beyond the elements it lifted from other titles.

In fact at first I saw a "clone", but then looking through it better I got that there was the will to use that combat system to make something good beyond another 3D experiment. About the terms like "metroidvania", yes it's true, but it's a word created to cover (IMO) the lack of knowledge toward an association of two or more games, I don't think it's just a quick term to associate games, and I have proof of it when some people state that IGA is the father of Castlevania.

I agree but I also think you're too harsh with IGA. Aria & Dawn of Sorrow were both great games and I think Order of Ecclesia showed a real desire to freshen things up. Besides, it's not like SotN itself was exempt of recycled content. It's one giant homage to past games, from old sprites (some from Super Castlevania IV) to a ton of small references thrown everywhere.

Yes, maybe I am too harsh with IGA, but I cannot see a good title that makes the differences, and his last attempt to make "another" 2D Castlevania is not a great deal however.

That being said, the 2D titles probably need some new blood to really make a difference again. New blood and a higher budget from Konami? I'm not sure they've been very lenient in that regard in the past.

Actually Lords of Shadows had a cost of money equal to $20 million. And we can see the results.
It's true that Konami in that regard wasn't lenient in the past, but on the other hand a good title like SOTN, wasn't released in less than one year.

Something about the original Castlevania enemies such as the venus weeds always gave me artistic inspiration somehow, however this new stuff seems more like the rest, God of War, Dante's Inferno, etc.  But I guess it's about time it got a little more grotesque.  I am not sure we'll see some classic enemies (like the Medusa heads) though I can't remember if they were in the other 3D games either.

Like Cox said, Castevania needs a reboot in several aspects. And keep in mind that David was in the american team that adapted SOTN, so it's not a personal whim just to detach the brand from 2D to gain worldwide approval. It's simply a primal need.

Though IGA was pivotal after the SOTN success at Konami, the transposing of the brand on 3D was arduous because Castlevania loses its identity. The 3D combat system and brand new enemies forces you to see it as a new "Castlevania", but it's pointless while thinking to the original 2D.

As you say TriFrog Castlevania LoI wasn't that bad, compared to the Curse of Darkness that was pretty poor in terms of graphic and general ideas. But this new title is pretty promising.

I too at first wasn't that glad to see a "clone" of GoW, but if we think about SOTN, couldn't we say it's a "metroidvania"? So everything lies in the way they use a good system. It's not a shame to borrow something if that would make a game better and most importantly if it could give a new light to it.

Again thinking of the enemies, for example the medusa heads, I think that it'd be out of place. In a wide level, how could you insert flying medusa heads?

However it's like Aaz said: the best would be to have more 2D games. But the problem is that actually IGA is obsessed with the old good peasant way of thinking that every part of the pig should not be wasted (the pig is mainly SOTN of course). It's given that to Konami agree this cheap production of 2D games, where everything is recycled till death, but without a 3D counterpart the brand is doomed.

IGA has a ton of stuff to create infinite collages or bad SOTN clones, but on the 3D side there's nothing worthy. Till now, I hope.

Well, people don't have a choice, nothing's better in the market, right? Or is it possible to find DH editions in your stores?

Yeah you hit the core of the problem. We are fated to eat up the bad fluorescent poultice that Panini dishes out to us. We can only hope that some day they'll release a decent version, with a double cover, good general quality and so on.

Ugh, that sucks Marik. You should try and import the DH versions if you can (or learn to read Japanese so you can enjoy the originals in all their glory, which is a personal goal of mine), since you speak English very well for someone who isn't a native speaker.

Thanks Rhombaad, but about the DH version, while I am pretty sure that in terms of quality it's a lot better than an Italian edition, like Aaz said it has some translation problems. For sure the best (and most arduous) way is to learn Japanese. :iva:

And what about the price, how much for the slim and the regular?

The various prices of the Italian editions are the following:

Berserk slim: 2.20 - $2.82
Berserk Collection: 4.30 - $5.52
Berserk Maximum: 7.50* - $9.62
Berserk Black edition: 5.00 - $6.41

*Actually the first numbers of the maximum (from 1 to 5) are reprinted to a limited number for the obscene price of 12.00 ($15.40)

I turns out the Black edition is quite new, and still no improvement in translation, you say?

Nope. :judo: The Black edition is merely the collection. The most improved edition is the Maximum, it has some name corrected, some dialogue is more accurate, but it's just that, aesthetically it's fucking horrible and aggressive to the sight, it's a kind of mocking from Panini toward the fans.

Oh, and mystery solved, I always wondered why Italians call characters by a strange names(on deviantart, for example) like Boid, Urbick and so on. Now I know. =)

Ahahah! :guts: Well, that's about it. Long ago I too used those misspelled names. :schnoz:

Wow, Marik, thanks for the info. That is just awful, I'm really shocked about the things they've done... But still it was almost 15 years ago, if it had been Russia they'd probably print it on the toilet paper at that time. And what about now, is there gonna be new editions of Berserk or is it long forgotten?

Ok, I'll clarify that actually EVERY of the four Berserk editions are printed and sold simultaneously. Basically they had printed the black one to contain the lack of the former numbers of the other editions, there's no replacement of a new one with the older. Berserk in Italy is always in the top ten best selling manga.

I just wanted to underline that, with FOUR edition, Berserk in Italy sucks in terms of quality, and the paradox is that it's pretty popular.

I myself sometimes buy two times the same volume (two slim editions and a collection for example) just because they are released with a gap of some months.

Anyhow the editions timeline is:

Berserk-1996
Berserk Collection-2000
Berserk Maximum-2004
Berserk Black edition-2008

I am very interested in seeing examples of censorship in Berserk. It seems like it would be a tough job to clean this series up.

Well, let's say that the most censored thing in the first italian edition of Berserk are the woman's nipples.(Yep it sound ridiculous, but it's true):

There are more or less 30 censored panel in the former italian version, fortunately removed in the collection.

Are you talking about DH or some other edition?

Nope, like Aaz said I meant the italian version of Berserk.

Warning: the following text, images, etc, is not a joke. Everything is real.

First of all Konketsuji, I must specify that in Italy we have FOUR edition of Berserk, but let's proceed with order.

The first one was based on the horrible former spanish edition, with childish cover color, heavy censorship and so on:

Basically a volume is the half part of a normal volume.
Since in the spanish edition, there were mispelled names, the italian version inherited them:

- Gatsu
- Grifis
- Caska
- Pak

And so on.

Later even with the detachment from the former Spanish edition, other names still remain misspelled:

- Shilat
- Shilke
- Lasquash

Some years later Panini released the second version, the Berserk Collection:

In this version they corrected some censored panel or they cleaned some pages, but one thing that didn't change between the two editions is the mirrored story. I mean they used the western reading mirroring in the whole manga; so we have that everyone is left handed, Griffith at the hill of swords touches his heart on the right side of his chest and so on.
So leaving aside the bad quality of paper/inking, the mirrored panels, misspelled names, now we arrive at the translation issue.

Basically the translation is good, but in some points (unfortunately the PIVOTAL moments) it sucks.

As Aaz will remember, I have already put under discussion some pivotal speeches like the one of Void (ah by the way his name in the Italian version is Boid):

http://www.skullknight.net/forum/index.php?topic=9538.0

Someone that read the episode 83, and then the Italian speech of Void at the occultation ceremony would be pretty confused and will think that Void is contradicting himself.

Or another example at the volume 24:

Instead of saying "the fifth angel incarnate" she's saying "the fifth APOSTLE incarnate". :judo:

Anyway the weird thing is that even though the story is mirrored, the first page of an episode is STILL on the right perspective:

and a page after:

Guts come back left handed and so on. One more horrible thing is the black bar with the episode title that sometimes COVERS half panel:

Ok, after that, Panini RELEASED THE ULTIMATE version of the BERSERK MAXIMUM:

The first thing that comes in your mind is...but WTF of cover color choice!! COME ON!! Fluorescent  childish color!

However here, the reading is eastern. So farewell mirrored thing. But this maximum shit has enlarged panels with a loss of quality. The paper is shitty as well. A volume has more or less 15 episodes, so it equal to a volume and 1/2.

And finally we arrive at the BLACK edition..

It's the Collection edition..but the color cover it's just black..ad for this GREAT ENHANCEMENT it costs 5 euro. (one more euro of the ordinary collection).
This black shit is EQUAL to the collection.

 :judo:

Basically this cartridge thing is quite weird, especially with regards to the chronology.

A clue for a possible cannon maintenance is that the artificial arm was bandaged. So if Guts devised a new kind of "shell" it'd be before episode 287, since I'd argue that after the incident with Casca, Guts would have not thought of ways to upgrade the arm that couldn't grab the person he loves. But on the other hand it's uncertain that he was trying new ammo before the bandaging, especially since he was still recovering from his injuries.

Like I said, my view.  It's different from yours.

I like your reasoning, but I think that you are missing something.

First of all, Guts had clearly admitted to himself(in vol 24) that, without someone(the chains) that takes
care of Casca he would have surely killed her.
So it's not like the armor plays a pivotal role in the whole slaughter. All started to a Guts need to be helped by someone. For the first time he was expecting something from someone.
That being said the Beast tells to Guts that somehow it's not that bad to have some friends(or to have those chains) and I read that as: I won't care if they attempt to take you back from my control. But soon or later..if they'll die I'll swallow you.(that's always Guts as we know).

So the fact that Guts allowed to the armor to take the control over him doesn't mean it's a low point, because the Beast was dangerous even before.

This is certainly unexpected! What the hell is Guts thinking, unleashing that thing... And after that talk with the Beast on the ship. I guess that was all just a bunch of baloney!

You mean the sentence when the Beast of Darkness tells to Guts that its power will be restrained until the chains will be broken?

The game is coming out on August 4th. I doubt I'll buy it.

Aside from that, this picture reminds me of SK's beherit sword.

Yes, I really wonder how many copies this game is going to sell, but for sure I won't buy it.

Anyway I'd argue that here we have a giant beherit shuriken!  :ganishka:

It looks quite good, and I have a wild guess: what if the "human tentacles" are bound to a larger core(like the Sea God)?
That would explain why we see at first the sea cucumber in the open sea (assuming that every sea cucumber and its human like tentacles are always made by villagers).

The best example that comes in my mind is this:

People enslaved and transformed.

Very nice episode. I wonder if the Sea God curses everything with the same monstrous shape (the sea cucumber and the villagers seems to transform in the same monstrous being) and if its look resembles the tentacles or something like that.

I'm also glad to see again this Guts:

If I remember correctly the last time we have seen Guts that way was in the 19 volume.

Looks like Isma might indeed be some kind of mermaid, as I'd guessed.

It would be nice if she would speak about herself, just to get if she is a post world-merging being or if she simply was mermaid before everything.

I also wonder if she's going to join the Guts' party after the end of this sea God revival episodes.
She may be a good guide against the new sea's hidden dangers.

Berserk will of course be present in the next issue of YA.

Great!!

Don't be too harsh with the PSP here, it's a 5 years old system. I think in that regard it's holding out very well against a brand new console. Anyway, I've always had a strong opinion on Sony's policy with its handheld, and I've been thinking for a while that they may simply not wish to pursue that market anymore, despite their relative success. They've spent a lot of money on the PSP and yet it was crushed by the NDS, and overall I'm not sure it's been very profitable for them.

I don't want to be that harsh with the PSP, just think that I have had every of them except the Go model(now I have the 3000). But as a customer, I realize that I have just 4/5 games of quality..too little compared to the number of quality games that obscured the PSP overall. So I think that you could be right in guessing that Sony doesn't care about pursuing the market, and the apparently crazy choice to create the Go model is a good clue that led to this conclusion.

What's more, they're in a bit of an impasse as far as design and technological improvements go. They were ahead of the times with the PSP, and it completely dwarfed the NDS in power (while the NDS itself was a huge step from the GBA). But what can they do now? Sure, the 3DS does better, but it's not so striking that the PSP is now obsolete. Even if they were to release a PSP2 soon, they wouldn't have the stark graphic superiority they had with the PSP.

That's what I meant. The 3DS it's better than the PSP, and imagining the success that this new nintendo portable will have.. for sure it's going to bury the Sony portable though it isn't still obsolete. Furthermore the problem of a brand new PSP wouldn't lie just in its limited graphic superiority, but even in its cost!  :ganishka:
I wouldn't be that surprised if it may meet the 350 Euro!

Then there's the screen, the PSP's pride. It's already so big, they could hardly make it any bigger without it becoming impractical. But they also can't follow Nintendo's foray into 3D because the technology they're using only works on smaller screens and currently can't be used with something over 4 inches. When you take all that into consideration, digital content seems reasonable as an alternate way to modernize their offer. Yet we know what fate befell the PSP Go. So what's left for them to do?

That's another good point..even read in economical terms. Sony may always be too expensive.

Anyway I'd like to say a consideration on the bad Sony policy regarding the portable hardware.

Nintendo, with his DS had ruled over the various version of the same PSP, and now that the 3DS has been presented with these result:

I wonder what kind of policy they'll adopt.

Sony instead of releasing at first the PSP slim, then the 3000 and than that obscene PSP GO(that costs 250 EURO!!! come on!! 30 euro less of a PS3!) they should have released immediately a new portable hardware. I really cannot get the actual Sony way of doing.

Just for a complete information about Castlevania LoS and his widely success at E3:

Nice to notice that there are even trolls from folklore(I'm assuming it since they resemble to those of Berserk, and as we know Miura uses the folklore)
And here we have a gameplay against some werewolves and our old dear uncle Warg.  :casca:

Thanks for posting it. I think it's looking better and better, and I approve of the inclusion of traditional folklore figures like the Baba Yaga. I also like that they're not pretending to ignore the obvious possibilities of the premise (it's a trap, the mask resurrects people as vampires, etc.). It certainly is shaping up to be the best 3D Castlevania game yet, and the only one worthy of the title.

Indeed. It looks impressive, and I concur on the fact that the hard work behind this game makes it worthy of the brand. Can't wait to play it!!  :mozgus:

Moreover Cox said that after this game, apart from the number of copies sold, they will have the green light from Konami to pursue on this way, but I'm sure that everyone will be excited just with this LoS!

I honestly liked Perfect Dark a lot more than Golden Eye. Too bad it didn't get that much attention because it came out at the end of the N64's life

Yeah, even PD was a pretty nice game. The problem IMO had always lied in the N64 itself. Just 15 to 30 MB(except the porting of RE2) of cartridge could not truly manage a game for the time's standard.

Lastly, I'm not quite sure what to think of this: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdohjd_wii-goldeneye_videogames

Certainly not worth full retail price IMHO.

Well, here the Wii meets its graphical limits. I think that the GoldenEye brand would deserve a better treatment. Moreover I not sure that activision will make a better work than rare..we'll see.

Yes, it's quite a challenge for MS. The fact is that I cannot really imagine whether this "kinetic" would even come close to the wii success or not. It's been a while that Nintendo just aim to an home family entertainment leaving aside a graphic quality up to today's standards. Maybe MS is going to bet on a general higher quality that intertwines with this controller removal project.
Honestly when the Wii was launched I was pretty skeptic about its success, but time has shown I was wrong.

So let's see...

Actually, this poll is reserved for just these guys, but the winner (the one with most votes) will move on to round 2 which will consist of even tougher opponent's and so on, until we make our way to the real badasses. Eventually there will be an epic championship and they will have to fight THE FINAL BOSS.

Ok Oburi, but allow me to say that assuming the winner of those guys would face a human final boss, therefore  I think Boscone  :schierke:, if the result is quite expected about the strongest..
