Character Cove / Götz of the iron hand
« on: December 28, 2004, 05:59:24 AM »
EDIT: Damn, this should perhaps have been in speculation nation! If a mod passes by, please move it.

Well, I'm not sure whether this have been covered before, but I read a science magazine on the train home for christmas, and came across a picture of a man named. Götz von Berlichingen. Appearantly in AD 1509 he was a german knight who lost his hand, and had it replaced with an artificial hand with moving fingers, which allowed him to hold a sword and continue to fight. I think he lived to be eighty or something, quite famous for his time.

Goethe even has written a famour play about him.

He was called Götz of the Iron Hand.

Now I know that Miura has done a lot of reading about medieval europe... does anyone but me think that Miura might have found some inspiration there?

And if anyone knows both german and japanese, how would the name Götz be rendered in katakana? I'm not sure how the german Ö is pronounced compared to the swedish Ö. It feels like Guts might be a reasonable rendition... it's pronounced more similar to A than to O.

Just a thought...

Shootin' the Breeze / Long lost returns...
« on: December 26, 2004, 11:45:13 AM »
Well, I've been away for a looong time, probably so long that most of you people doesn't even remember who I am anymore. *grins*

Mostly I've been busying myself with the Skaven site I'm moderating, but recently I've had this urge to get back into berserk. Okay, to be honest a friend of mine recently fell in love with the manga and got me back to the recent issues online.

Now seeing as how I've missed quite a few of the raws, I've been up and down the bloody net trying to track them down. IRC failed me, and I'm not touching Bit torrent and the like with a ten foot pole (talk about unsafe!), so I was wondering whether anyone knew of another place to get the following raws?

239, 244, 245, 246, 247, 248

I'm just wondering... and yes, I checked the current issues section of course, that's where I usually get all the stuff. BUT, seeing as how the raws get pulled after a short time, I haven't managed to find them all.

So if anyone could help me, I would be more than grateful, if not I'll just have to curse and wait for vol 28 at the end of february I guess... And vol 29 after that... agh! Too slow!

Have fun out there everyone!

And it's great to be back.

Shootin' the Breeze / Perhaps this is all out fault...
« on: January 06, 2004, 04:15:10 PM »
I mean honestly...

Yeah, the board is going to shit and beyond, but we are the ones that post here after all.

And this is shooting the breeze, so it's meant for silly nonsense. However... what happened to the real berserk discussion I all hear you say?

I'll tell you.

All the old timers discussed the interesting subjects years ago, and yeah I remember all the interesting ones like who the hell Gasaerik really was, what is the real relationship with Griffith, Casca and G*ttsu and tons of others I can't remember right now.

And now... when new people arrive who has seen the anime as it was released in the states, or which has started on the american manga... well, as soon as some of them start a thread or post in an old one the reaction will be 'oh no, not this shit again'.

Well... correct me if I am wrong, but all this shit has already been discussed more than once before, any new discussion is limited to such interesting things as to where the hell Silat is running... *groans*. Why? Because at 20 so pages every two weeks the plot takes TIME to advance...

So really... we have the board we deserve, and if people complain, well then the choice is simple.
-Don't read the shooting the breeze section if it gives you indigestion.

-Don't stomp the newbies stupid theories because honestly, once you didn't know better either.

-Don't start bitching about 'we have talked this into the ground already', because you might have. Obviously the ones that posted on the topic didn't agree.

-And above all... just remember that this is a bloody message board. It's not the end of the world, and we all post her voluntarily. If it has gone to shit, just leave for a year or so. I did *smirks*

-As for this Skull Lord debacle... well, the way I see it we deserved it. This is the mask some people can hide behind and do the whings we all wanted to if we weren't afraid of our reputations. Yes he is annoying as hell, but it is people's interest in him that gives him power. It is like paradise lost with admin status... scary, I know. But not the end of the world.

In conclusion:

Sumairu, sumairu!

Shootin' the Breeze / Why is everyone so hostile?
« on: November 27, 2003, 02:52:47 PM »
Okay, I might be remembering things a little wrong but...

Why is everyone so hostile? I have seen several topics now that just seem to be excuses for people to jump in and attack others.

I mean... granted, an old debate might hold bad memories for some posters, but should that forbid newer posters to discuss the same thing? I am so sick and tired of the '...thanks for reviving the...' whatever as soon as there are new posts in an old subject

I mean... come on! Can't people be allowed to discuss what they want? What should all the new ones here do then? Or indeed, people that might have new thoughts on an old subject?

There are tons of posts out there which just basically pisses me off. So what do I usually do? I ignore them. If you think posting on a particilar subject is a waste of time, then why do it? Just don't read the bloody posts!

Also, if you get upset over something... try dealing with it in a calm manner. Not all people are as smart as you, or possesses the telepathy needed to understand your posts in all their intricate details. Is it really worth getting your point across by making fun of peoples inadequacies? Because the truth is you might just end up exposing your own instead... Sarcasm especially is a hard thing to get across on the net.

Just calm down a bit everyone. It's a bloody message board, and not the end of the world. *grins*

And yeah, I have been as guilty as everyone else on many occasions but...

I'm trying. *grins*

What the hell is this?

I write G.a.t.t.s. (without the dots of course) and out comes bloody Guts???

I know it is the so called official name now, but I do not like it! And I sure as hell do not want some bloody computer 'correcting' me. What's next?

That is about the most patronising thing ever...

*just walks away, throughy pissed off*

Manga Mausoleum / I am totally lost here! Info anyone?
« on: November 22, 2003, 04:25:54 PM »
Hey again everyone.

Well, it's been a near year since I hung out here, and now I'm slowly getting back to berserk again. (Don't sue me please, love do strange things to people)

Anyway, when I left the following had happened.

Guts, Schierke and the rest of the crew had met up with the little witch girl and a troll of some sort. They had just arrived at a very weird building which the witch girl had shown them too.

I was starting to get a bit bored by then, because I didn't see much intersesting happen personality wise since Guts struggles with his inner demon (which I loved). I know that Griffith was collecting an army, and that the Kushans had invaded. A few very quirky supernatural beings also served under Griffith now...

Now I wonder... could anyone please do a quick sum up of where we are in the story? Details are not neccesary if you don't want to, just the broad outlines. I hear that Flora the witch girl seems to have died... has there been any more character developement? Is Casca still scared of Guts? Is Guts still talking to his inner demondog? Has Griffith spoke yet? Did Miura go all out in fantasy land as we feared? Did they ever get to the island of the elves?

I am dead curious and is going to get the rest of the volumes I have missed when 26 comes out in december... but I want to be able to participate in the anticipation of the current chapters too. *grins*

Thanks in advance!

Shootin' the Breeze / Well... I might be back
« on: November 21, 2003, 01:01:04 PM »

Just poking around here, been a bit nostalgic about this place lately. Of course I am totally out of the loop about any recent happenings, I drifted off somewhere around when Guts and the crew were off fighting trolls somewhere... Just when they got to the witches house.

Perhaps that was what caused me to drift away, it was a huge new storyline and I didn't really think it advanced the characters that much. of course it will most likely have picked up pace by now but.... *smiles*

I really have to get those albums.

Anyway, been missing you guys.

Speculation Nation / Timelines and godhand
« on: August 31, 2001, 05:34:43 AM »
Every 216 years there is an eclipse which can give rise to a god hand.

About every 100 years there is an eclipse which can allow the rebirth of one.

Five god hands born, that takes about 1080 years.

what if... it is a cycle? that the rebirth of the godhand made flesh heralds the end of the old God hand, paving way for the new?

If Void's birth was at the end of Gasaerik's empire as has been speculated, then he would be the oldest of the present God Hands. What if Gasaerik was the youngest  of the 'older' god hands? And got reborn just as Griffith? Even before he built his empire? He might have slain the older God hands at the culmination of his quest for power, then was torn down as Void (the wise man) sacrificed himself, becoming the new God Hand in the process. The corpses at the bottom of the tower might be the remains of Voids ascenscion. Skullknight might be the remains of Gasaerik, who knows how much human will be left after such a long time of reincarnation...

What if Griffith will eventually tear down the current God hand, ruling supreme like gasaeric did? Who will be the first new god hand to ruin Griffith's plans? Guts? Casca?

This is just plain rambling speculation, *grins*, its friday and I aint making much sense... gonna go eat cake now *snickers*

Speculation Nation / Attention!! Wild ideas ahead...
« on: January 25, 2002, 02:17:04 AM »
((moved this here from the 'forgiveness' thread...))

Everyone forget something : Griffith never died!Sure when he first met Idea he was not at his best, but he was alive and no one killed him. He was simply trasfomed in Femto. In a way it was the King size version of the trasfomation of the everyday apostle. and so we can presume that the human part of Griffith lived on.If you do not believe me ask Casca if it was a spectre that raped her.So the question is instead: why "resurect " (or "give rebirt" )a man who was  alive? Why Grifith did not simply use his powers to assume is old human guise and walk again among us? It is a simple feat for lesser apostles why a major one , or call it a godhand if you prefer, should not be able?

AGH! I hadn't even thought of that... *smacks forehead* You are so right... that means that there can only be one reason for the 'rebirth'. To inhabit a body that is not controlled by the godhand. To be free.

*ponders* okay... time for some wild speculation adn what if's here:

What if the reason Griffith was reborn, was to gain a freedom from the godhand that he had not had before? We have not seen them since...

What if the reason Griffith was reborn was to be reborn in a body 'outside' casualty? The foetus should be dead. it's fate should have been to die with casca. It should be dead... but is not. And what's more... it's got Guts for a father, the one man so far to really amaze most of the 'immortal' onlookers.

What if the powers Griffith exhibits are not those that remains from his time as Femto? What if they belong to the foetus. Guts and casca's child. With Sonya and Schierke we have seen that 'normal' people can have powers too... can anyone guess what a child twisted by being at ground zero in the ceremony could exhibit?

What if Griffith's goal is not his own kingdom, but to bring down Idea itself, so that he truly can accomplish his dream? He always was willing to sacrifice himself... and can anyone imagine a greater sacrifice than transforming himself to Femto? Now that I've read 83, his looks are pretty omnious at times.

What if the reason he's gathering a 'monster' army is to have them all under 'control'? When they have helped him win his battles, then he'd kill them off in one fell swoop. Bingo. No more idea scum to walk the earth. It would be a typical Griffith tactic... and more of a reason not to associate himself with them.

What if Griffith really can talk to spirits now? The rumours about the next issue seems to indicate that, and then perhaps

Character Cove / Serpico & Farnese
« on: August 07, 2001, 01:21:54 AM »
I am just wondering a bit about Serpico and Farnese. I remeber someone saying that Serpico was Farnese's adopted brother. Is this true? The issues portraying their background has not been translated yet so I have no clue what happens there...

Can anyone please give a very short summary of what happened in "Fire, ice and.." (or at least that's the name I remeber of the story). I know the basics from looking at the scans, but was Serpico adopted for example, or was he just taken in as a 'friend' to Farnese? Any other revealing things which was said? I'm quite intrigued by the pair and would love to know what makes them tick.

Character Cove / Griffith's mental state
« on: August 08, 2001, 05:03:53 AM »
All the discussion lately got me thinking:

Everybody agrees upon how much Casca has suffered and how she ought to hate Griffith for it (she did go mad to escape the pain). But what about Griffith? He was tortured for over a year, got his tongue cut off (I've heard rumours of other things as well), his face flayed, tendons cut so he became a cripple... and those are just the things which left physical marks on him. Hell knows what he went through psychologically. Granted, the man is stubborn and focused to the max, but still... I am suprised he is as sane as he is (if he is).

He would have every right to hate Midland for the things which was done to him. So... when he gets his kingdom, will he be the just ruler I once thought he would be? Or has his experiences twisted him enough to make his reign, a reign of terror instead? I have no clue!

Also... I think that his sacrifice of the Hawks, and the rape of Casca was partly motivated by his sense of being abandoned. I mean, he was alone down there for over a year with no sign of anyone even caring what happened to him. Even if he still loved them (and he must have, otherwise the sacrifice would not have been any good) he still must have felt both hurt and abandoned. Especially abandoned by Guts, and later as he saw how he and Casca had become lovers, by Casca as well. Hence his act of revenge on both of them... (of course he might have been planning the demon child too, but still... the look in his eyes as he watches Guts during the act)

Then being transformed into Femto (or at least part of his conscious self was, the hurt and angry part, the other 'good' part might have been left behind as the Hawk of Light) and being a God Hand for several years... that is bound to be a freakish experience. Especially as the way I think about the God Hand is that all their emotions are the 'dark' variant of a normal humans emotions. Lust instead of Love etc... so his sense of betrayal and pain probably grew... if he even was very aware of what he was himself.

Then... suddenly reborn in the flesh. What a shock.. I mean imagine. No matter how controlled and ruthless Griffith might seem, he had a lot of emotions underneath that cool facade. For example his grief over the young boy who wanted to be a knight. He refuses to feel guilty over it, rationalising the whole experience, but one can see that he still suffers. And he makes the decision to take as much pain upon himself as that his followers have to take, going to bed with the old man to speed up things. And even though he tries to rationalise that part as well, in the river afterwards, he looks as if he'd rather fall apart at the seams with disgust, scratching his arms until they bled. So... he might act cool, but he's too damn sensetive undernath.

And now... back among the living he has to come to terms with the fact that he sacrificed his followers and loyal supporters, he raped Casca, his right hand and Guts love. Now... he probably rationalises that part too, after all the Band of the Hawk were willing to die in battle for his dream, was this very different? They sacrificed themselves... And he needed to twist the foetus so that he could use it to be reborn, hence the rape of Casca (if he knew that, otherwise he will have even more regrets).

But the result is still there to haunt him. Guts hates him and tries to kill him, Casca is insane... even though he might try to act aloof and cool, sooner or later he will crack. He has already realised he had a heartbeat and thus is still alive, and once that sinks in he can't even hide behind his own inhumanity anymore. He is human. He betrayed the people that believed in him. He hurt those that he loved and made them loathe him. All this was for a cause, and I guess he will be even more determine to achieve his Dream because of it. But will his dream be twisted and dark, instead of bright?

I think that unless Griffith has a breakdown and starts to deal with what has been done to him, and what he has done to others, things will get worse. Not even he is capable of shutting everything away for all time.

It will be interesting to see if this happens, and when the first cracks in Griffith's perfect armour will begin to show...

Gah! I got carried away I know, but damnit, he's the most itneresting guy in the story. Such a complex bastard. So... what do you people think?

Character Cove / Casca's life, and the two men in it.
« on: January 03, 2002, 12:43:14 AM »
Puella's comment in the episode 193 thread got me thinking... and since my ponderings usually grow pnderous I moved them here as a prememptive strike. There are too few Casca discussions out there anyway...

I just want Casca to begin a new life without two guys.
Why should her life always be controlled by men?
first Griffith and second Guts as you know.
In other words, can't she have her own life, huh?
Why should Guts give her salvation? Could she get her own life back for herself?
I'd not say Casca should have equal power like Guts but she can
use other ways as every woman have but men doesn't.
this is why I don't think highly of Casca while many people think Casca best female character.
She's best for only men that's what I think. A life as a woman fucked up.
and also I think this is just because berserk is manga for men.
I mean Casca is nothing more than "best female" is created by a man.
Furthermore, I can't like other female characters except Luca in berserk. Rather they always make me annoyed.
don't blame me.
this is just my personal point of view.

***I want to make it clear that I'm not god damn feminist and love guys very much..

I think the real problem with Casca is that she is not controlled, rather that she have never had any dreams or aspirations wholly her own. When she was a younger daughter she did not have many dreams, because as she said, life back then was pretty much about surviving. When her father sold her she was even understanding, because she might have done the same thing in his place. It was when she met Griffith that she came to realise that there was other things in life. I don't know if she fell in love, she might have done that, but there was something a lot more involved. Griffith became her personal god and saviour, probably the first thing in her life that she had even considered worthy of worshipping. Think religious awakening combined with first love.

That is quite interesting really, because if Griffith had been any other sort of man she might just have ended up in his bed, a beautiful concubine and not much more. But since Griffith just valued things that could help him achieve his own dreams, she became that instead. Her whole career as a fighter came not from her own will, but rather that of Griffith. Not that she minded once she got started, it must have been wonderful to finally have control over her life, to be able to get guys like Corkus to just fuck of. Can we say powertrip anyone?

But what I am trying to say is that she had no dreams of her own, if not becoming the sword of Griffith (and his lover as well) counted. No dreams apart from Griffith would be a better expression come to think of it. And then she met Guts. Who stole her position as Griff's right hand man, and stole the place in Griffith's heart she had wanted. Not that she had ever had it.... but still. Jelaousy. Funny really that she was the only one who saw what went on between Guts and Griffith, with the possible exception of Judeau...

So what made her fall in love with Guts? Well, he was worthy for once, he did hot hit on her, he quite obviously made it clear that he saw her as just another soldier and apprechiated ehr skills. Just like Griffith. And... I guess she trusted him. He had always come through for her, and there was something truly cute in the way he could just not handle emotions. Whith Griffith and Guts both gone I guess she started thinking. Griffith was her first love, her truest loyalty, but Guts... well, once he came back and showed her that not everything was hopeless, that he could stand all her anger, her hate... then I guess she dared to love him. That goes for both of them. It is frightening to love someone if you are emotionally scarred, but the two of them had dared to do pretty much else, hadn't they?

Love... In a way I wish it could have ended that way, but there is always Griffith is it not? Even in the end she could not leave him, not even for Guts. Loyalty and love of course, but also because to strike out on her own, with no other commitments than herself and her love must seem a pretty scary thing. She had never, ever lived for herself before.

So where do that leave her now? When she becomes sane that is?

Shootin' the Breeze / My first  Japanese lesson!
« on: October 04, 2001, 02:46:31 PM »
Oookay, I've now officially had my first lesson in japanese!

Kowai...... My classmates I mean. I was the only female, I bet they all worked with computers, I know that those that I talked to did. They studied japanese because they wanted to go to japan (--see pretty girls live) or liked anime (--see pretty girls on the screen). Only three guys said anything at all during the break, the rest hid along the walls, looking shellshocked. One guy smelled, three were wearing sandals even though it's really cold and rainy now in sweden. Half of them had taken this exact class before and was now taking it again. And they were asking the teacher questions, or rather making statements lke: 'it's like this, right (--trying to look good)' which more often than not were wrong.

Did I learn anything? A little bit... did I enjoy myself? Hell yes! Just the class itself is worth the money, and the classmates are hilarious. :D. Next time I'm gonna talk to some more and scare them... no way I am telling them that I watches anime though, then I'd be overrun in no time. Think return of the living dead...

hehe just had to share...

Shootin' the Breeze / I am going to Pally All!! (HK DVD's)
« on: October 09, 2001, 10:50:54 AM »
Hehehe... ;D

Finally got my HK DVD's, and from a cursory inspection I have realised the following:

Berserk Box: ;D Beautiful package, but the cover on the box was a bit badly glued on mine. Very nice package and disk design. The menu on the first disc was hilarious, with the option to "Pally All"  I think I'm gonna do that later... the menus on the other discs seemed fine though, with a digital little Beherit. Fansubs and pic quality seemed to be very good.

Neo Ranga Box:  ;D Very nice packaging, beautiful picture discs, over all a proffessional and fine treatment. All the discs worked, a few minutes of the subs I watched seemed adequate. A little grainy at places, it felt more like good tape quality than dvd.

Vandread Box:  :) same as Neo Ranga, but with much nicer menus but a little less interesting box. And... *sighs* they call him Cosmoman instead of Alien-san... anyway, he will always be Alien-san to me...

Jin Roh: ;D Same as Berserk. 'Widescreen'... mmmm nice.

Spriggan:  >:( This was basically fucked, it was not in widescreen, and the music was warped and scratchy, making my ears hurt. It was obviously a bad VERY pressing, faulty in many ways. I'm gonna try to return it.

So... there's my first impressions, gonna review them better when I have watched them all, now I just browsed them a bit to see that they worked.

Mmmm I'm so happy right now...  ;D

Shootin' the Breeze / Does anyone here use a Mac or netscape?
« on: August 08, 2001, 05:12:27 AM »
This has nothing to do with Berserk at all, I was just wondering if anyone here are using Netscape and/or a Mac computer. You see, I am webmaster of:

and I have had some complaints about that the site don't really work with Mac and Netscape users. Now, I do not know any people who are using Mac at all, and I can't see anything too terribly wrong when I use the netscape on my friends computer. Could anyone please just look in at the site and see if you can access the stories and so on?

I would be very much obliged, I'm not half as good as html as I'd like to be...

Thank you very much in advance...
