Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: R.I.P. David Gemmell
« on: August 13, 2006, 07:05:36 AM »

Wow, I didn't know... He died at just 57 years old too, that's pretty young for a writer. I considered him to be one of the few good living authors of fantasy.
Yeah, I'm feeling the same way, this is pretty damn surreal, definitely came out of nowhere... The part of it that really gets me, is that not only is 57 extremely young(especially for a writer, as you said), but I can't help but feel that Gemmell had more than a few stories left in him; I mean, you know there are other things that Druss or any number of his other heroes have done, or that Skilgannon could have stood another book or two to get developed(in his own time), just that extra bit.(I mean, I could've stood for knowing why Ulric owed him that life debt...) Simply put, knowing that we'll never again be returning to the lands of the Drenai really, really sucks, especially in a genre as full of trite, dime-a-dozen books as fantasy is. Aaz, you once told me that oftentimes in stores if you were seen holding a fantasy book you felt embarassed because of the quality of writing the lion's share of this genre consists of, I can echo your sentiments, but at the same time, this is something I've never once felt -nor would I- while holding a piece of Gemmell's work.

It's strange, since Aaz first introduced me to Gemmell a year or so back(I think it was...?) I've been picking up near anything by him(almost always involving the Drenai saga) that I can get my hands on, and never once have I regretted it. Authors like Gemmell, with such a level of intution that they can pull off characters as convincing and life-like as these(while still remaining interesting, no less), especially within the fantasy genre, unfortunately are something that recently, I find to be far and few between.

Though more than even that in my opinion, through reading Gemmell, I really started to get the feeling that he knew better than anyone else in near any form of media(that I've read or seen, at least  :guts:) what true heroism really is. And he's one of the few authors that's really helped to shape my own perceptions of it. Considering his life, and the interviews of him I've read, this really doesn't surprise me in the least.

While I could sit here showering praises upon the man all day(God knows I haven't done it near-enough), for the time being I'll cut myself short and say this, for those of you wandering into the topic that may've managed to suffer through the ramblings above and haven't read Gemmell, try it out!

Legend his first, in addition to being the first within the Drenai saga(written that is, not chronologically), is one that focuses on his staple recurring character Druss, one whom stars in several of the Drenai saga books thereafter. I really don't think one could ask for a better springboard into Gemmell than Legend, it definitely in my opinion, captures the spirit of what Gemmell's all about.

Sorry about the convoluted post, I'm a bit tired at the moment, and got excited.

And Aaz, strange that after showing him to me, you should be the one to give me this news, too.

looks like shadow of the colossus is the best game, heh.

i thought the outcome would be different.
Well, has the most fans on the board at least; honestly, I'd place Dragon Quest 8 far above it, at least in how much I've enjoyed them.

I even didn't mind Bloom too much, as long as he's not playing Legolas it's fine with me.
I agree wholeheartedly, in fact, I think he fits the swashbuckler archetype/image quite well. I won't be awaiting this movie with baited breaths, but as everyone has said, it looks 'fun'.

A bunch of stock, trite and cliched fantasies, in addition to a few pretentious, wannabe "political breakdowns" they're fantastic!

"Together, Wii will change everything."

I find it hilarious.
Really, it's all a bit much; though I am interested in finding out how Wii is going to break down the wall between video gamers and everybody else.

Though, I have to say, while it's corny, I'm pleased to see Nintendo saying something like that, whether it's just to garner sales or not.

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 272

Aesthetically I'm not fond of him, I think its the creepy, unkept old man vibe he gives off.

Well, thinking he's lame for that reason makes you so, more than it does him.

That and the fact that Guts can't get a hit on him.

Not every fight-especially one with this major a villain(relatively)- is going to be resolved within the matter of an episode or two. And besides, Isidro just got a hit on him, one that should go a long way, considering Daiba's build and what it was that Isidro hit him with. (Admittedly, Daiba is more physically resiliant than he looks, didn't stagger him nearly as much as I thought it would.  :isidro:)

I'm going to put it into D&D-esque terms for lack of a better way to explain it. Whenever you have a powerful fighter, go against a powerful magic user, usually the fighter is toast.

Sometimes, but not nearly all, or even usually, really.

The fact that Guts can't even get a hit in, I think is giving credence to this theory.

So damn base.

The fights a little unbalanced I would have rather have seen a battle between Daiba and Selke, although I think Selke would get slaughtered in a battle like that.

Yeah, the fight's unbalanced, but that's what makes it so damn epic, and entertaining. Besides, in my opinion, it hasn't even been going long enough for us to determine one way or the other whether it really is unbalanced or not; Guts is one hell of a beast in a scrap, and it takes these kind've "high-pressure" situations to make him shine all the more, these kind of fights are one of the things that make Berserk worth reading. At least, in my opinion.

And, if Schierke would get slaughtered, as you say, then I guess it's a good thing she's not going toe to toe with 'im, right?

I Also think Daiba's presence is slowing the plot down a little too much, it reminds me a lot of the battle with Roshinu, I just want the fight to end so the plot can move forward and out of the city.

suck my dik

Anyway, the ep. was fantastic!

Can't wait for the next, it's amazing how sucked into this arc I've been getting, each episode just keeps building and building. Though, that's nothing new to Berserk, I guess.

As always, thanks be to thee Mr. Useless Sound Clip Archive.

I'm getting re-married on April 22nd 2006. I just payed the last bill just now.  Received every single reply that I needed, preparations are going smoothly and most important; my wife is getting her wedding.  Family and friends will be all together in a single room and I can't wait for this day.  Ladies and gentlemen... I am having a magnificent day.

Enjoy this day, and those to come, you've definitely earned some extraordinarily good ones. *If there was a thumbs up emoticon, it would be here.*

Couldn't you play as Lizardman in both SC I and II (I should know, hes the only one I played at the Arcades)? What do you mean by original character?
Actually, what I think he meant by original character is that Lizardman now has a unique move-set and command list; instead of being a warped version of Cassandra or Sophitia.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't assassin basically chinese sword now?

And Vaxillus, all things considered; Olcadan is a much cooler character than Charade ever was, but, if you really don't like him; just use Charade or Edgemaster, since they're both still in the game.

And this may be a naive question, but is this the first time Serpico draws blood from something using his magic sword? I can't recollect him doing that against the trolls, crocodiles, Kushan castors or the dakas.
If you mean as far as him fighting things with the sword, obviously not; but I have a feeling you mean actually seeing blood as a result of his attacks on an enemy; and I can't recall every bit of blood/gore from every single panel, but I'm sure there have been other instances where his sword has drawn blood rather than just slash straight through an enemy.

And nothing in the immediate future that I can really think of to speculate about, so cheers for now, thanks you for the preview.

Well, I'm not going to defend her as an asset to the series, she has become a part of the core group.  I would definitely wonder where she is or be distracted if she were to be replaced.
Having her go to Africa and using any number of Storms side-stories as an excuse would be prefereable to letting Halle Barry anywhere near these movies in my opinion.

while I was surprised halle berry is back.  I thought she left.

Eh, Ratner upped her pay so she would stay; should've just let her go in my opinion, just another reason this movie is going to suck.

Now, nothing stands in the way between the undead horde and the Mountain of O'mlette.
Except for me, if you're coming anywhere near North America that is.

Nice new avatar CnC.

I command an army of red and silver dragons through my telepathy(which I developed after the nuclear war), and wear a suit of golden platemail; I also wear a red and silver tabard which I outfit my skeleton armies(At this point I've discovered how to ressurect the dead through my necromatic magic developed after consuming the soul of my father who was a powerful and ancient Half-blue dragon Lich)in.

I wield a gleaming longsword forged of green steel(made from the synthesized radioactive ooze.) with purple runes etched down the length of it's blade(which in Draconic says "Sworn to  fun, loyal to none."
When my armies are bathed in my blades eldritch light(including me) they are given the ability to move faster than human thought, and the strength to rip up the ground beneath them and jostle it about, creating a wave to bring anything on the entire planet that I desire to the foot of my base.

I rule all of Northern America from my tower(wrought of the darkest obsidian) which is stationed in the ruins of the White House.

I also drive a giant sized crotch rocket that blares "Where Eagles  Dare" by the Misfits constantly.

What, you doubt the acting skills of the most electrifying man in sports entertainment? :???:

Much appreciated!

While I'm sure the video doesn't do the games full justice, gameplay looks fluid as hell.(As is fitting of the sequel to the formerly best Castlevania game  :carcus: ... kidding)

Anyway, I enjoyed the first two Castlevania's on Nintendo immensely; and Aria of Sorrow is my favorite to date, though from what Aaz has told me DoS sounds very promising.

It's not the most action-packed (I think of it as a murder mystery) but it's quickly paced and the character development is great. In the second book, A Clash Of Kings, things really pick up.
Cool to see other George R. R. Martin fans, read A Storm of Swords yet?

My expectations were pretty much shot down by the previews that I watched. Damn! I had hoped it would be something decent this time, instead of something Graz`zt or Demogorgon could use as a visual torture device.
Don't mention the demon lords without saying Orcus.
