Shootin' the Breeze / Re: Your plans for the future
« on: January 16, 2015, 02:59:40 PM »
Short term:

Get my first and second degree black belts within the next 2-3 years.  That should give me plenty of experience (as well as personal confidence and skill) to possibly open my own studio.  I'm still kinda taking the situation as it goes, so it's still pretty vague.

Get more experience at my currrent workplace; the engine component I'm working on (EGR coolers for diesel engines) have a long future in the industry, especially as the EPA brings even more strict emission requirements.  The more knowledge I gain now, the more it will benefit me down the road.

Finding a place to share with some friends so we can split the rent, but even this plan might fall through since one of them is sorta on the fence.  This is more of an optional one, I guess

Getting a new car; my mustang already has more than 100K miles on it, and I can just see the maintenance bills coming in. :judo:

Long term:

Get a decent home, most likely in the suburbs somewhere.  Not planning on getting married, so I'll (hopefully) have plenty of space for all my junk.

Another thing is to just get out the automotive industry.  Now, looking at one of my short term goals above that may seem counterintuitive, but actually my field is mostly related to heat transer between dynamic fluids and material properties, and I can imagine many places not related to automotive stuff that may be impressed enough by my resume.

Get a Masters degree.  This is probably optional, depending on how my job situation goes.

Okaaayyy, let's see here:
I just got promoted to 3rd degree black belt in tang soo do and 2nd degree black belt in hapkido. I'm starting to see if I can start a park district program, so I guess I'm still on track there.
I'm still employed at the same place, and even got a promotion (not much of a pay increase, but I've got a job so I'm not complaining). Kinda good, except I'm still in the automotive industry. :judo:
Got myself a new car a few years ago, and I just paid it off last month. That's a relief!!  :serpico:
I actually bought myself a condo, and my girlfriend (!!) moved in with me, so I killed a few birds there. Although she and I have talked about marriage, it likely isn't going to happen until she gets her Masters.
Speaking of which, I received my Masters (MSME, to be exact) last year too.  So all in all I think I did alright.

Well, I did sell it pretty hard. I'm just glad you finally played it and enjoyed it. I would have liked your take on ME3 though, basically if you'd hate it or not, but oh well. Still, don't you want to join in the fun of ragging on it because it didn't end like this:

But I only ever made paragon "decisions." :judo:

I wouldn't have minded if I had gotten this ending.  :ganishka:

:farnese:  is that a bad thing?

Also, this:<- having three cats now almost necessitates something like this, but damn…

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: Movies you've recently watched
« on: April 10, 2012, 12:01:00 PM »
The last one I saw was 借りぐらしのアリエッティ (or The Secret World of Arriety for the UK/US release), a nice, beautiful little movie. Very relaxing to just kick back and watch.  :serpico:

Ninja edit - forgot The Borrowers was the title of the novel, not the movies :farnese:

He's about 3-4 yrs old, he's actually a stray cat that a friend of mine picked up and kept for a few months. She decided to donate it because he was driving her dog nuts and couldn't keep it under control.  :mozgus:

This is seriously really cool.  Just reading through, your attention to detail is incredible! Can't wait for more updates! :beast:

I've been pouring a lot of hours into the Sins of a Solar Empire:Rebellion beta, even though my favorite faction, the Vasari, haven't been made playable yet.   :judo:   Hurry up Ironclad, show me the good stuff!!  :daiba:

Between the massive fleets, starbases (TEC loyalists can have multiple starbases in a single gravity well) and the massive titans, this fulfills all my epic space war fantasies!  :ubik:

My "new" cat (although I've had him for more than a year now), Royce:

FYI, the two cats I had posted on the first page of this thread have passed away, but Royce still carries on the torch!!  :judo:

I've been addicted to Mount & Blade: Warband for so long, and now I find myself dividing my time between M&B, Arkham City, Battlefield 3, and the XBA remake of Guardian Heroes (oh, Sega Saturn, how I've missed you!).  My sleepy time is getting severely compromised lately… :troll:

Current Episodes / Re: Episode 316
« on: October 25, 2010, 01:43:07 PM »
I've missed the last few episodes (the last one I read was ep. 312), but I'm glad this episode wasn't too hard to catch up with.  Very interesting stuff, I find it very concerning that Guts keeps going into Berserk mode at almost every sign of trouble.   :beast:  Also, glad to see the Moonlight Boy again, maybe we'll get more exposition/dialogue from him this time?

Just a note on the sound effects, to me they are just the background noise of the ocean waves washing up against the seashore.  "Za-zaaaa" or "Za---nn..." is a rough way of translating the onomatopoeia. This same sound effect occurs when Schierke goes crying into Guts' bosom (vol. 28 as well).  Yet there's no indication "mysterious appearance" that happens here, it just drowns Schierke crying out. It's mostly there for dramatic effect (like the aforementioned scene), or as a pause in between scenes (like in Aaz's signature).

I remember reading that panel on my own copy, and I never caught it until Aaz pointed it out.  Neither the sound effect nor the panels leading up to it alerted me to Zodd's presence there (and I have only myself to blame for that).   :schnoz:
To me it just seemed like one of those throwaway panels that Miura put in just to transition to the next scene.

^^It does show them avoiding the shots by submerging... :rakshas:

Anyway, it would be a sick sort of irony if the ones that possessed the ship were the same ones that were abandoned by the pirates in the previous engagement with the Sea Horse.  Just another insult to injury, I suppose.

Looking forward to the episode, can't wait!!  :guts:

Shootin' the Breeze / Re: Official Goal Thread!

1.) Keep my job through the summer, preferably for a very very long time (I may not like it much, but it's good money in a poor economy). I still have a job, so I guess that's a good thing...

2.) Pass my black belt test (for first degree).  Passed my pre-test, will be doing the full test in October.

3.) Get a new car.  Currently unsure as to what car I should get...

4.) Finally clean my mess of an apartment.  I have a roommate moving in, so maybe he can clean up the mess.  :troll:

Shootin' the Breeze / Paintball, anyone?
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:21:01 PM »
Anyone into paintball here on  I've recently been sucked into it, and have just splurged close to $400 or so on paintball gear.  I've been researching online quite a bit about what I should get (Here is a youtube profile with excellent paintball tips) and I've had a few questions for anyone who might have some experience in paintballing:

What is the best mid-range ($300-$550) paintball gun?
What is the best type of paintball for a casual guy like me (woodsball, speedball, etc.)?
What sort of expenses can I expect in a given year (assuming casual, maybe once or twice a month paintballing)?

I might have some more, but please give me your thoughts!  And anyone else who might be also be starting off, I hope this thread will be helpful for you too!

The box art has been officialized. Not a big fan personally, I like what they did with the first game better. Still, glad to see Ashley's not in there. :troll:

Hopefully they'll have something better for the inevitable ULTRA SPECIAL HARDCORE EDITION (...though it will probably be just the same cover art with some stupid holographic veneer to it  )

Shootin' the Breeze / Re: Official Weightloss/gain Thread!
« on: August 01, 2009, 03:21:03 AM »
I've been on a constant exercise the last couple of weeks, leading up to my black belt test:

Monday - 2-hour workout at the dojang (martial arts studio)
Tuesday - 10 min warmup on stationary bike, 30-40 min of upper and middle body weight lifting, then a 2 mile run.
Wednesday - same as Tuesday, except maybe some more focus on the abs portion of weights
Thursday - Rest day
Friday - 3-hour workout at the dojang
Saturday - same as Tuesday, except maybe a longer run

It's not the most exhaustive of workouts, but it keeps me in pretty good shape and in a good rhythm.  My weight is still hovering around ~165lbs., however.  :judo:

Unlikely goals:

1) Getting my Masters rank in Tang Soo Do - Unlikely, sure, and takes a long, loooong time.  But I figured it's a worthwhile goal.

2) Retire before the age of 60 - My dad did it, so can I!  :troll:  :daiba:

3) Learn Chinse/Korean/Russian/Arabic (Farsi maybe, I don't know?) - Learn new languages, just because I'm just fascinated by them.

4) Create my own novel - I'm got tons of ideas swirling around in my head, I just don't have the time to sit down and write them all up.

I have many more, but I gotta go to work.   :schnoz:

The Last Remnant - I went on hiatus for several months, and only got back this past weekend because I had nothing better to do.  :ganishka:

Reign of Swords 2 (iphone game) - This game really tailors to my gaming tastes: It's turn-based strategy, it's online, I can have several concurrent battles going on at the sametime, and I can take all the damn time I want when it's my turn to move.  :guts:

Well, we have the precedent of the Oblivion Herbs incident in which Casca regained her sense of self temporarily, and she stated that she was in a "bad dream".  Whether she had remembered every detail of the Occultation is hard to speculate given the short amount of time she was in that state, but I think over time her memories would probably have resurfaced sooner or later.

Now I'm not saying that the Hanafubuku-Ou's healing method is in any similar to the Mandragora's (although it may be likely, since Mandragoras are probably a useful ingredient in portions used by wizards/witches). But I think the precedent (or foreboding? :miura: ) set by the Oblivion Herbs can't be ignored when speculating about Casca's possible mental regeneration.

I can also see how she may have some recollection of what happened, but be in complete denial that Griffith could have betrayed the entire Band of the Hawk, or just have a sense of disbelief as to what has all occurred.  Certainly, the dynamics of the group is going to change drastically since Guts only relented to having it in the first place because he needed help taking care of Casca.  If Casca is cured (and I'm pretty sure she'll retain much of her combat prowess, if not her actual strength) then everyone else pretty much is at square one (except for Guts) in terms of forging a relationship with her.

My cat of 15 years, Arthur, passed away peacefully this past Sunday.  My parents buried him in the backyard (my wish), the one true place he always longed to be (we never let him out since he got lost one time for several days).

In loving memory:
