Berserk Miscellaneous / Re: What Would You Ask Miura?

-Who are some of the characters that you enjoy drawing the most and why?

-In the past you spoke about the time and effort you put into to the creation of the 1997 amine series.  Did you do anything similar with the recent movies?

I am also interested in some of the fan events that might go on in Japan that we don't hear about.  A podcast I listen to for another anime is done by people who currently live in Japan and they talk about all the fan events, conventions, signings, merchandise, and so on that happens in Japan.  I am not sure how to ask this.  If things like this do exist, does Miura have any idea that they exist let alone take part in them.  Is anyone aware of something like a Berserk fanclub?

These re-reads are a lot of fun to listen to.  It is hard to add to the discussion, you guys are so thorough.  I'm glad you guys talked a lot about the art.  It reminded me of the art book and how great it is that a good bit of these volumes are featured in it.  That book is such a treasure,  I wish there were others like it.  Keep up the good work.

I did notice a typo in my Dark Horse volume that I never saw before as I followed along though.   The first episode in the volume is translated as "Casca, Chapter 1", even though there is a giant "3" right above it and that it is correct in the table of contents.

Have we seen that shot of Guts before...?

It was the cover of an extra book that came with Young Animal a while ago.

It almost seems like a question that tempts fate, given all that we've been through as fans over the past 3 years, but what do you guys expect to see for Berserk in 2014?

Yeah, these types of predictions the last few years never seemed to end well.  I'm just thankful that the end of this Berserk dry spell is in sight.  There are so many things to look forward to and each new episode brings us closer.

I am loving this show.  And the concept of having additional seasons with new cases and new detectives sounds great.

I also think it's possible that both Hart and Cohle are still investigating the case, Hart from the inside still being on the force and Cohle going rogue and off the grid. I know they other investigators keep mentioning some falling out they had but perhaps they faked it so they could continue the case on their own terms since there seems to be a bigger conspiracy going on, possibly involving their own department and the Mayor himself.

I am right there with you. It has been shown before that Cohle and Hart are not truthful with others about their time together, especially after this last episode.  They might not have the best relationship but there is a bond there and I could see this "falling out" as a way to possibly throw off anyone watching them, allowing Cohle to slip away and continue the investigation unsupervised, while Hart has maintained a higher profile and has been like a man on the inside for him this whole time.

My poster was stuck and I tore it a bit.  :judo:

Also opened it up and saw this right away.

Come on Dark Horse....

I turned the page and saw this...

What the hell is going on?

I want to believe.  Something new and short from Miura sounds really cool.

Well I suppose the silver lining to this is the apparent popularity of the series to the English speaking audience.  That and a willingness of fans to buy the volumes and support it when scans are so readily available.  This should go without saying, but we know from the previous discontinuing of Dark Horse Volumes that this was a major problem before.  It's nice to see the semand so high.

I think it's more about how they have not received the reprinted issues yet instead of already selling out.

Thanks for the info.  It is nice to see something new, to me at least.  It has been to long.

I really like how we get Guts' point of view and thoughts as he falls for the whole page.  I am trying to remember if Miura has done this before or since.  The closest I can think of is recently with the child helping Guts out of the Sea God, but that's not as visually interesting.  A cool scene either way.

As for "causeless", I want to precise it a bit. It means "a trick whose goal/cause/reason I don't know", something like that.
Think about what Guts said to Ganishka. "I don't care what's going on with you monsters".
The meaning can be related to it, I think.

Maybe something like a "cheap trick" or "lame trick"?

Very cool,  I did not know about this.  Looking at my volume(21 by the way :iva:), I never really noticed before but they way Guts stabs Mozgus is a bit odd.  In the episode before we see Mozgus and the others noticing or hearing Guts on top of the tower, but we never see him turn around.  I think it still works with out it and the action of Guts falling down the tower is not repeated this way.

Do you know if he changed any of the dialogue on the pages before and after this one.  In the Dark Horse translation, it flows nicely, but if you insert this page with Puella's translation it doesn't seem to fit.  I guess its more than likely that some of the context was lost in the Dark Horse translation.

I think the overall sales and interest in the series had something to do with it.  For some reason I don't completely believe the sales figures that were shared in that thread on the Dark Horse Forums.  I think that sales increased over the last few months.  The stock of Berserk volumes just dried up too fast and all at once for it to be random.  I think, as horrible as they are, the movies introduced/reintroduced people to Berserk and they found the manga.   :magni:

I just hope people did not get hit too hard by the re-sellers and that those who put off purchasing the series in the past see this as a second chance to support Berserk.

I really Really REALLY hope that volume 30 is reprinted with higher quality paper stock. That would be an instant buy for me.

That would be nice.  We can hope.

No, I just forgot to answer. The way I know of currently is through stateside Japanese bookstores. There was one in Atlanta I used to use, but has closed down. Kinokuniya Books is the largest one that I know that's still in operation. Here is their contact information: . For shipping purposes, it's best to use one locally. If you live in San Francisco or New York, you are in luck. If not, be prepared to pay additional shipping (usually from Japan TO the bookstore and THEN over to you, whew...).

Contact them by email or phone, tell them you'd like to place a subscription order for Hakusensha's Young Animal. They will likely make you sign up for between 6 months to a year, because it is expensive to bring over individual items (ships via air mail). Herein lies the hurdle with subscribing to Young Animal—it's expensive, and with Miura's schedule you never know what you're signing up for.

I am not sure how much a subscription would cost, but you could also buy each issue of YA individually through someplace like CDjapan for $15 to $30, depending on your choice of shipping.

Great analysis guys and gal.  I disliked this movie the most.  I have to agree with Rhombaad, the one good thing about these movies is listening to you all tear them apart.

The overall quality of these projects is disgraceful.  Even if it was just a joke, I hope the speculation that these movies have depressed Miura is not the case.  It would be terrible if the failures of idiots had a negative impact on the series.  I am sure he is not pleased with them, but I hope that he is able to see that he has many fans that are just as upset with how these films were handled as he maybe and that they have a great respect for Berserk.

Also good catch on Casca kissing Femto, I missed that.  The creators should be ashamed.

Anime Asylum / Re: Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent [Review]
« on: July 02, 2013, 04:31:18 AM »
I got around to watching it the other day.  I am in the worst of the trilogy camp.  At this point I am just repeating a lot of what others have said but I will just add them to the pile.

The beginning was a hacked up rush job that barley gave any information.  One thing that bothered me was that I don't think the anger Guts felt in the manga about Griffiths condition really came across well in the movie, and the escape was so short and lame.  No character development between Guts and Casca, Charlotte was just kinda there for no reason except to tell the story about Gaiseric, and what was the deal with the arrows raining down on them as they fled from the army?  They were attacked from the front but never cut off?  Where did those guys go?  I don't get it.  Also the whole "OH NO! They almost kinda shot a horse with an arrow!", but it's ok because the horse will still keep doing what is was doing regardless, is just terrible writing.  These people suck.

Like others have said, the strongest part of the movie was the pre-eclipse/pre-sacrifice section(which isn't saying much).  It seemed to work fairly well but once the sacrifice was made it just went to complete shit again.  The fade to blacks killed any tension or momentum the film had going.  They failed with Voids entrance.  They whole Guts attacking Femto and crap...  :mozgus:  Fuck you Studio 4c.  I paused the movie for a moment and thought about just turning it off at this point.  What a betrayal to the source material.   :judo:  Skull Knights entrance was pretty cool.  It would have been better if we hadn't seen it an hour and twenty minutes earlier, and in the previous two films.  Rickert was just there for no reason, and why did Guts have a I can't believe hes gone moment about him?  I also think Skull Knight finished off Zodd. :badbone:  What is wrong with these guys, they cut all these great scenes with great lines and add their own weird bullshit like that scene with Puck and a bunch of apostles flying in the air with a tentacle monster in the clouds.

1/5 Stars.  Worst of the three.  Too much is wrong with it to list.  If we are lucky these people will give up and maybe a few years down the road others will give Berserk another shot and do it justice.

I am about to listen to the podcast.  I am looking forward to major ripping on this film, it will make me feel better.

That's surprising to me. I'm not doubting you, but since DH began printing Berserk, I've looked for it whenever I happen to visit one of their stores, and across the East Coast, I've never once seen Berserk on their shelves.

They do sell it online though. Volume 14 can be had for the low price of $65, used!

It might have been a special order or a temporary thing, because I also had never seen it on a B&N shelf before.  And I am not even sure if they still do.

Ganishka was a really cool character.  Guts fight with him led to one of the coolest moments in the series for me.  Guts and Zodd working together and the dialogue between the two of them both before and after.

Also Barnes and Nobles does carry Berserk in their stores.  If I ever went into a big book store it was usually a Boarders, but when my local one closed down a couple of years ago I went to a Barnes and Nobles.  They had the first few volumes on their shelf. I have only been back a couple of times since then, but I don't remember if there was any Berserk on the shelf.

These look awesome. :guts:  I would love to see pictures, if you have them, of the process you went through to customize them.

Still, I find it rather surprising that a country as populated as the USA would see so little sales.

Same here.  I wonder how that applies to large web shops like Amazon who might have had a large amount of copies of a volume stashed away?

The publishers are simply going to have to face facts that the landscape for the medium has drastically changed.

This is unfortunate for me.  I buy and read very little e-published material.  I personally like to have physical books and magazines.

Your thread on the Dark Horse forums got a response.  It seems the situation is pretty grim and that they don't have any intentions of printing more copies. Very disappointing.

While we at Dark Horse appreciate the concern over volumes being out of print, we have to look at both sales history and sales velocity in making our decisions about what to reprint. Though the numbers that BigRock posted are not entirely accurate, they are indicative of the low numbers of available stock for some volumes. But it's not just a matter of Dark Horse reprinting books. It only makes sense for us to reprint books for which we anticipate enough demand to make reprinting a worthwhile endeavor.

I took a look at our in-house sales history which tracks stock on hand (both in our warehouse and in Diamond Books Distributors' warehouse), number of copies sold per month, and unsold copies returned by the bookstore market. Even last year, when there was stock on hand for ALL of the volumes of Berserk, the sales velocity (copies sold per month) for many of the middle volumes was anywhere from single digits to low double digits (in the low teens). That means the consumer demand for many of those middle volumes is between 80 and 170 copies per year. Even going back to press for just 1000 copies (the bare minimum print quantity, for which you pay a higher than average printing price) would leave us with a six- to twelve-year supply. And, sadly, If at the end of those six to twelve years, we have managed to sell all one thousand of those copies, between storage, inventory taxes, and licensing fees, Dark Horse will end up in the red. Not really a recipe for staying in business.

Well, you say, why not raise the price of the books to cover the costs? Great. Except history has shown that raising prices on those volumes to the extent necessary to cover the costs would further erode sales -- and increase inventory taxes. So, that's a non-starter.

I'm just trying to layout the realities of the publishing business for you. Believe me, we'd love to be able to make everything available forever, but that's not realistic or possible.

I'm just the messenger here, but if somebody can figure out a way for us to provide Berserk readers with copies and allow us to stay in business at the same time, I'd love to hear it.

Just found this on the official site.

Apparently you can still buy all of them at regular cost.  I'm wondering why amazon has a shortage?

You can't buy Berserk directly from Dark Horse.  They link you to a web store that is like a partner or official store. Things From Another World.  For instance if you click on Volume 36, there is a link on the right saying, "Buy print edition now! Berserk Volume 36 TPB is currently in stock at Things From Another World!".  If you click on lets say Volume 34, it tells you that it is not available.

That link pretty much sums up my post fairly well.  If you notice, underneath each volume there is either a "Buy Now" link or nothing.  The ones with nothing are the ones out of stock.
