Thanks!  It took me forever yeah I kept changing my mind about stuff, and I was only working on it while I was playing D&D.  The big looming guys with hats are my faves I think.  My color sense is still really pretty weak, I started out with everything kinda candy color and just kept remixing it until it didn't hurt my eyes, and then tried to get the Team a little more saturated than the rest.  Then overall color washes/adjustments to make it hang together properly.

Yoo guys I have been deep in the grasp of like not doing very many stuff but in the background I've been working on one of the two page spreads forever.  I'm getting close to done so here's a preview.

Yeah, the machinations here are more like laying a trail of syrup that ants will follow it, than digging a canal that water will flow down it.  The ants don't HAVE to follow a trail of syrup, they just probably will.  The water has to obey physics. 

Now, that does assume there's some qualitative difference between the physics of water flowing and the physics of neurons, the question of free will etc, but for storytelling purposes the difference is there.  At the very least the ant's behaviour is by current technology only statistically predictable where the water's behaviour is completely predictable.

Nice!  The armor and the tusks pop nicely.  The red looks good on my main monitor but on my phone it's kinda dark and you start to lose the inks.  I like the color choice tho.

Finally got to read this one.  Wow.

The preview sketches:  I'm pretty sure what's on those poles are skins.  The more ghostly images of them are them partly filling with wind or animation so that they're more recognisable.

And it's interesting to see that her psyche has decided that she's symbolically dead.  It looks like the lil tiny her is hiding inside that.  I can't really tell of course but I think you guys are right that the shattered ego is a stylised puppet/doll rather than a sketch that will be finished as a more literal corpse.  If that's the case it could be a layer of her feeling like/deciding (for the protection of her psyche) she was inhabiting her own character, 'faking it' and really being something smaller inside.  So that she could go on, albeit as this only partly 'there' being, because what was broken and is now symbolically dead could be 'fake' and not 'really her'.

Fair enough with the Daka discussion.  You make reasonable points.  Ganishka's hubris sounds right.

As for Schierke's butt:

What would the purpose be, though? To titillate the reader in the midst of a comic scene? It doesn't make sense.

Well, it's not as though comedy + titillation is an unheard of combination, but it's pretty much always silly titillation.  The titty bullet dodge scene from Highschool of the Dead might be fanservice but I don't think it's supposed to actually get anyone hot, despite all the lovingly animated bosom jiggles.  It's supposed to make you laugh.

I might call Schierke's butt fanservice in the sense that I'm sure there are readers out there that went "aah!!  I got to see Schierke's butt!"  but I am definitely of the opinion that it's just supposed to make you laugh at/with the awkwardness of Schierke's situation.  Not least because it's really not a flattering/sexy drawing.  And also because the default non-westernized setting for bathing nudity in Japan is non-sexual.  You wouldn't, for example, mistake the naked girls bathing in Totoro for fanservice. 

It only feels more like that because Schierke herself is embarrassed about landing nekkid on the manliest guy in the room.  Contrast this to all the nudity of Isma, with a very beautiful and graceful body, but she's shown going about her business so it doesn't feel dirty/gratuitous. 

It's Schierke's own feelings you're picking up on here, in short.  I'm sure she would be mortified to hear all of Guts' biggest fans saw her fall buck naked on top of the guy.

I should probably walk that back a little, I don't think it's actually sexist, more a style choice, but still does rankle me a smidgen.  And I realise it does sound weird that I'm essentially saying 'well he draws a great variety of body types for naked men and men with clothes on and women with clothes on so why not naked women too!'  Anyway that'd be a discussion for that other thread and I think we already hashed it out pretty well there.  It's not related to Berserk squicking me out, just a tangent to the Daka.

That's true, the Daka were surely a great troop booster for normal warfare and useful up til that point.  Even if Ganishka didn't need them for the capture of Wyndham.  It still seems weird that he was all excited to pit them against the apostle forces in Wyndham just for them to immediately get wiped.  It's just hard to imagine Ganishka didn't have any idea what to expect with the apostle forces.  And I suppose it would be foolish in war not to put out everything you've got even if you don't think it's gonna do much, and it's not like Ganishka isn't supposed to be gross, but it's still pretty gross. 

For that matter the prisoners bound for Daka production would have been a great opportunity to counter the one actual sexist element of Berserk, All Naked Ladies Are Reasonably Hot.  Because I'm really very sure that the hotness level of the women wouldn't be a factor in their suitability for making Daka, and if that's most of the point of Ganishka's army taking conquered women prisoner it would be highly foolish to only take the cute ones.  Even the trolls had a better excuse for only finding/taking sexy looking women; you could make the argument that practically all the girls in the farming village could be built like that or that the trolls only liked the cute ones (similarly you could argue only the cutest girls would be around/take part in the naked stuff in the heretics' orgy).  But Ganishka's army has been rolling over the entire country, so you'd now have to argue that either there are literally no ladies who are fertile but aren't nicely built or that the army puts them all somewhere you can't see them.  Not that we ever really see many of these doomed women, but the ones we do see have a very narrow range of body types.  The 'little sister' during the rescue is the only one I saw on a casual flip through that would look out of place as a pinup.  (I forgot the apostle bag is way back in vol 27!  dang.)

But really, the Daka fights all gross me out just because we know every single Daka represents an exploded probably raped lady, there are absolutely tons of them, and on top of that they all just get mowed down.  They all look kind of messed up and random, and so many of them just look kind of confused and cute.  I don't even feel like we were ever really supposed to feel that threatened by the Daka (we never really got to see them holding their own in battle but rather just showing up, looking scary in a big mob, and then getting facerolled) but rather that they represented how far off the rails Ganishka was.  Silatt was appropriately grossed out, after all.

Making the Daka grossed me out worse than the trolls' nasty reproduction.  Not least because then it turned out that the Daka were next to useless.  I guess the whole thing was really just Ganishka's or the GH's excuse to have the apostle bag made so that Ganishka could break the world with it later.

Oof.  Wow.  So many scenes that I still vividly remember as holy shit moments the first time I read them, just with no impact at all on screen.  It really feels like the director and/or key storyboard guys do not know what they're doing.  The camera moves are awful so much of the time.  The action scenes are hard to follow and the atmosphere scenes don't give your eye enough time to rest and build up any atmosphere.  Even the attempt to have the candles reflect off Skully looked like if they had done it right it would have been cool.. but they didn't.  The purple goo didn't bother me last episode but they doubled down on it and the rolling evil goo that literally kept me up all night reading through the incarnation ceremony back in the day, it was so fucking scary and spooky, now just is some purple cgi blob with a face on it. 

The music, omfg why.

Boo.

Isidro is pretty good though.

Either way, no. I highly doubt Casca will activate the beherit and become an apostle.

Though it would be quite a twist, it's off the table from the start because all the things that would make suitable Casca-sacrifices have already been sacrificed.  You'd need a lot of post-sane Casca time in the story to even try to build up an idea like her caring enough about Farnese or even (if it were possible) moon baby, before that choice would have any narrative tension.  (Though it'd make a cute Omake for her to end the show by sacrificing Incarnated GrifFemto.)

Wellp this is the first episode where I didn't feel like there were a bunch of scenes that I'd like to try replacing with my own attempt at the animation.  A lot of properly drawn acting closeups where I was glad they decided not to just try to use their puppets.  PAINTED CORPSES instead of video game ones.  Vast improvement.

Man this one stands out for scenes that would have been amazing properly animated but that just got 1/4-assed.  Any number of Luca closeups that should have been hand drawn.  No innovative animation in the orgy scene at all.  The beloved slap is all CGI puppets.  The ought-to-be-evocative burning corpses look like CGI stills from an arcade zombie FPS.  Etc.

There were a few directorial gaffes too like you guys have mentioned with Joachim's Baby Soup Adventure looking like it hadn't even been storyboarded well.

Still, I enjoyed watching it somehow.  And there's a little Hirasawa at the end to raise my mood.

I just wanna quote this out cause it's such a concise demonstration of how different post production filters affect the art.  The darker, grainier version is what we're 'used to' I guess, for scanned Berserk traditional ink art, and the pretty, filtered version is SO pretty that it gives us the impression of being possibly fully digital - and seeing the original art in hand there, I'm gonna assume that the pretty filter is meant to have the look of a photograph of the art. 

this here is a comparison between 2 panels, the panel on the top is guts from digital volume 38 which might i add looks very similar to the print volume 38 and the bottom panel is from the digital YA issue. as you can see, the top panel looks grainy and has texture to it, looks traditional. the bottom panel looks much smoother, the screentones are cleaner, they dont have those random white dots or texture that the top panel has. the lines on guts' hair look smooth and done with a digital brush with pen pressure.

The great thing about that panel is, that we have seen the actual manuscript in the behind the scenes video of the 2016 Berserk anime.

Haaaa  :guts:  OK that made me smile.  But yeah, these days though he's certainly intimidating just because of the figure he cuts, whenever he's being scary AF he's hidden in the armor anyways.  We don't get bystanders witnessing Guts all holy shit like Jill did back in Lost Children anymore.  I mean, we do still get bystanders going holy shit but the context is a lot different recently.  Nowadays it's more like 'oh no a billion eldritch monsters - oh SHIT, the armor guy is outmonstering them!'

I think the digital work looks a little off-putting too but I also think that we can chalk that directly up to the nuts and bolts of a media change.  I'm frankly surprised to see the digital brushwork on, for example, the pumpkins; it's what you get when you use default round brushes.  The exact same strokes would produce a much more visually appealing look if he used a more sophisticated brush.  And the line quality itself is what you get when you have line/brush smoothing/stabilization turned completely off. 

So it looks like the work of someone who has just picked up digital tools and is self-teaching, and hasn't got around to everything yet and/or hasn't had an experienced digital painter over in person for tips and pointers.

I agree the circumstances or desires for the separation them may be different, the reasons given are justified in the mind of that protector / father figure.

However, do you not see the effect, the purposeful distancing of those who should, by rights, be closer to them, and their their feelings of being "trapped" and alone, as similar?

I see what you're trying to get as but as Aazealh details, the commonality there is really just "broken parent/guardian relationships" and you might just as well throw Guts & Gambino, Rochine & her folks, Jill & Zepec in there too. 

The closest parallel you get is Theresia and Charlotte, with Charlotte just being sheltered and Theresia more literally locked away, and their fathers both seeing them as objects of affection - though weirdly enough Slug Count ended up with the healthier desire to just have a kid who liked him.  So Theresia's affection was taken away from Slug Count by the fact of his monstrous nature (and his upsetting actions), and he was distressed that he couldn't get away with being a monster, but Charlotte was taken away from the King by ANOTHER MAN RARG I GO NUTS NOW.

But these girls didn't crave anything themselves, unless you count Theresia wishing she wasn't locked up and everything wasn't nuts.

And absent Casca doesn't want anything besides just not to be literally restrained.  Guts just wants to help her and keep her safe but didn't know how and was frustrated by that, but he learned that leaving her alone didn't help - not because she needs him, but because she needs the protection he can provide.  Similarly, the girls from Lost Children just needed parents who would represent safety and love instead of being selfishly cruel or thoughtless (or too afraid to stand up for them) and letting awful things happen to them. 

As far as the craving, it's the other way around with Farnese, lil Guts, and Falcons Casca.

Daddy Vandimion didn't want anything either except not to be troubled; he would have been happy with a dutiful cipher of a daughter he could marry off to somebody.  It was Farnese who craved affection and attention from an absent family, and didn't know how to get it.  As far as that goes, Gambino and Guts are a closer match, and Griffith and Casca even.  Guts and Casca both craving the approval and affection of their, IDK, senpai, and doing all kinds of stuff to get it but only getting little shreds of what they really wanted (Casca of course wanting a bit more than just approval, which she got just fine).  The difference there was that they were both doing exactly what should have got them approval, where Farnese was just like I KNOW, I'LL SET FIRE TO THINGS.
