Site & Forum News / Re: Like SKnet? Donate to Help Us Become Even Greater
« on: November 06, 2014, 06:57:35 PM »
Hello all, I just wanted to thank all donators as well as the admins and Grail (since she's helping and donating) from the bottom of my heart.

I was always happy to be able to contribute to SK.net, and it's a great pleasure for me to peruse the original text.
I always appreciated that beyond the artwork, the words in Berserk have their own value. In a way, I feel like I'm animating the characters through these translations, and I've come to view it as a kind of duty for me to deliver their true meaning to people, keeping them as close as possible to what Miura intended (now I'm talking like the Pontiff).

And now thanks to you all, I'm encouraged to keep doing my best. My feelings are exactly like below:

"To share warmth with somebody is so much warmer!"

Warmth! This single word says everything for me. What to say, it's like I'm offered a cup of coffee, a donut or a jar of pickles... from my friends.
I feel warm thanks to you guys' care, and I'm very excited to be able to work on Berserk more than I've been able to before!

Berserk is great, Miura is great and SK.net is great. This will be an unforgettable event in my life.
Thanks again!

Great! If I were you, I wouldn't be able to eat it. I wish I had one with Puck's face on it...

Berserk Miscellaneous / How many people around you read Berserk?
« on: October 18, 2014, 01:02:22 PM »
My husband, my brother and my three brothers-in-law read Berserk. But except for my husband, they all just read my own collection and didn't bother buying them. :puck: And none of my friends read it even though I've recommended it for a long time.

How about you guys?

I think this interview is interesting. And it's a recent interview too.
He didn't reveal new things though and mostly talked about the damned movies of course. However he did talk about how he drew the characters, how Adon is kind of an outdated character since he created him from the 80s to 90s...
I'd like to put this into our list of interviews to be considered for translation.
Of course, I won't translate the director's gibberish. :zodd:

Manga Mausoleum / Re: Favorite Arc

So, you must be extra disappointed that portion wasn't utilized for the film project where it would have been perfect? Then again, considering the results, maybe it's more like it was spared. :puck:
Yes! I cursed them for omitting the Black Swordsman arc. They could have made one good movie from it instead of three terrible Golden Age arc movies. It hurt my eyes when I saw Griffith and Charlotte's long and slow bed scene and I almost cried from the embarrassment I felt when watching Guts' scenes. Moreover, Miura said he wanted the Black Swordsman arc made into a movie... Why didn't they take the creator's opinion into account? But you're right, in a way, it was spared... *sigh*

I voted for the Golden Age arc because, as for many, it was the one that made me fall in love with the series.
For me, it's the Black Swordsman arc. I'm a big fan of it. Guts, Puck, the God Hand, apostles... It contains everything I like about the series.
When I first saw Colette holding the severed head of the old man, smiling evily, I foresaw it would be my favorite manga. :azan:

To comment a bit on the episode outside of Rickert and Griffith's meeting, I find it funny how Sonia actually likes the tea and the cake but just has to pick on them to bother Charlotte (which fails miserably). And she reads Mule's mind wanting to have the cake...

I found Sonia a bit creepy and weird at first but she's just like a normal young girl. I like how Miura has depicted Schierke and Sonia as having some very typical sides as young girls while they are also exceptionally talented.

This is also the second time we see them eating Charlotte's cake (still wonder what type of cake that first one was). Those seem to be the "warmest" moments for Griffith. However, I wonder if many men enjoy tea. In my surroundings, tea (especially herbal tea) is usually for women...

I think Miura is interested in gastronomy. It was my first impression when I saw Serpico making bouillabaisse on the beach, which is my favorite.

I have to get intraocular injections from time to time.
Whenever the needle goes through my eyeball, I feel like Guts when his eye was gouged during the Occultation.
Sometimes my whole eye bleeds! Pretty creepy. But my doctor often found me strangely smiling. :femto:
Still, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
When many patients are waiting to be injected, I imagine we're the Falcon soldiers and the doctor is Void, about to brand us! :void:
I always think about Guts when I have some hardship. It's my trick to overcome problems.

On lighter note, when I clean the floor at home, I often find myself holding the mop like Guts holds the Dragon Slayer!
I wield my sword and then the chore is finished. Problem is, doing it this way doesn't clean very well. :farnese:

This thread should be revived regularly since life changes! :carcus:
All the posts here sound great to me. It's like we talk about our life, gathering around a bonfire like the Falcon members.
Reading my old post here, I feel like Flora! It's been almost 5 years, and I did see a blue butterfly since then. :serpico:

I wanted to have a pool in my garden back then but now I want to have some wild animals like toads, hedgehogs, lizards... along with a small waterway. The good thing is that I've built my career relatively well. For now, my goal is to be healthy.

The one thing that hasn't changed for the past 13 years is my passion for Berserk. And I still keep that hope of seeing Miura some day. Maybe I'll go to Japan and lurk around Hakusensha's building everyday until he shows up! :rakshas:

I know this is a slap-worthy question, but I wonder just like Griffith: did Rickert have the Falcon of Light dream like the others?
Probably? But he's not controlled by the Falcon of Light because he knows the real Griffith.

So is "holy shit" a subtitle for this episode? :serpico:
I didn't expect Rickert to bend down to Griffith, but because of Erica I also didn't think he'd be that daring!
He doesn't mind risking his life but he does care about her and her well-being. Maybe he didn't care about anything at that moment?
Also, I liked that he slapped Griffith's face instead of punching him (like Guts would have done). I think it's more humiliating, and more appropriate for what Griffith did.

I hope we won't see Rickert impaled on Locus' spear in the next episode...

He tells him that the leader (of the Band of the Falcon) isn't the Falcon of Light. Depending on the other panels, "leader" could be meant in that sentence as a replacement for "you", as in "you aren't the Falcon of Light".
I personally think "you're not the Falcon of Light" sounds the best for that line. Direct, concise, cold and cool.

渇望 (desire, longing) refers to Griffith's feelings.
福王 (king of good luck, blessed king) is just a king title. It doesn't have a specific meaning beyond that and shouldn't be taken word by word.

So the title refers to Griffith's own very strong, unequalled longing. Beyond that, I don't think there's a definite answer. This is a line that also puzzles Japanese readers, and it could be interpreted several different ways.

Maybe, but when that line was delivered, it seemed pretty casual to me. Just two old war buddies reminiscing. I think from a storytelling perspective, Locus' function in this episode is to provide Rickert with the means to learn just how different Griffith is now.

I think if it was just a casual talk, Locus wouldn't pay attention to them. The panel seems pretty meaningful to me.

Quote
I can see the relation, but Mozgus was almost comically fervent. Locus' devotion seems frightening by comparison.

What I mean is that they're both putting on a show of "faith" and morality, appearing as devout followers to a noble cause, while they do cruel and vicious things. When Locus talks of an "uncompromising Utopia" while the two can see Volkov gutting an ogre, I was reminded of when Mozgus lead the poor woman with the dying babe to the torturing room, talking about "god".

Locus' argument is very interesting to me.
He reads Rickert's mind perfectly and is like some kind of detective who interrogates a criminal. Rickert must be afraid of him.
Though he said he doesn't have any "hidden intentions", I think the way he goes about it is practically threatening. He watched Owen and Rickert when the latter said "I've known him since the Band of the Falcon were no better than bandits". Maybe he wants to warn Rickert to watch his mouth and change his attitude towards the Falcon. It remids me of the moment he went to meet Ganishka, and how he was with him.
He's really quite a cold character. When he justifies what Griffith did, he reminds me of Mozgus.

In my experience, I can't listen to podcasts properly (paying enough attention) while also doing something else. I guess I might just not be good at multitasking.
I usually listen to them when I take a rest from work or after lunch. I ofen fall asleep while listening... Not saying they're boring or anything though!

Congrats on the 50th podcast!

You guys become more and more professional with each episode! Our podcasts are better than some radio programs that I've been listening to for a long time.

My only complaint is that the participants are very enthusiastic about apostles, fight, blood, the architecture of the dome and so on, but not so much about the small relationship between Erica and Daiba, which I found most interesting myself! :isidro:

I personally wonder how Guts would react if he had a chance to hear Locus' point of view.

Would just two words ("Fuck off?") be enough? I think his reaction would be similar to the one he had with Grunbeld's ramblings about warriors.

Rickert seems to be a bit taken in by Locus' speech. I think he'll be somewhat like Raban in the end. Not content with this new world, but aware that there's no real choice.

It's very nice to hear you girls talk! :guts:

I remember Miura once said that it's hard for him to describe female characters' mentality.
I think it could be a good avenue for the Floracast to explore.
This is what we, the outnumbered female members, can do for the manga.

Also, as a woman, I've always thought that Casca is not ideal because she's too devoted!

Manga Mausoleum / Re: Page Not Included in Volume 21 Recovered, Translated
« on: September 09, 2013, 04:27:48 PM »
I appreciate Walter for giving us a chance to read the missing page!

A missing scene where Guts addresses Causality directly?!  :mozgus: But in all seriousness, as you can see it's not exactly the most important text, and I can honestly see why Miura chose to remove it. But it's nice to look back and see the original intent.
He heard "Causality" from Void during the occultation, from the Skull Knight, and later on from Flora... It's pretty interesting to see Guts mention it directly, which is just this single time through the whole manga. I also think that's why Miura removed the page.

As for "causeless", I want to precise it a bit. It means "a trick whose goal/cause/reason I don't know", something like that.
Think about what Guts said to Ganishka. "I don't care what's going on with you monsters".
The meaning can be related to it, I think.

Gobolatula, you're a great actor! And you remind me Steve Buscemi!
Do you have some acting experience like a school play or something?
And Grail has a mysterious gaze that seems to be smiling!
I really enjoyed it. Thanks for your great work!

Congratulations :ubik:

The baby is perfect. He has big eyes and a pretty nose. His cheeks especially drive me crazy! :iva:
I also want to say "cheer up" for the mom. She'll get better so soon thanks to her endorphine which continuously forms everytime she looks at her son.

By the way Walter, at what age will you introduce Berserk to Kagan?

Haha, jeez. To think that I was feeling sorry for the guy! Now I'm glad he got a bunch of holes poked in him. :badbone:

Thinking how cruel the viscount and his son are (idiot father, idiot son like Guts said), I hope they are put in the same prison and disappear soon like the prisoners. :zodd: It's possible since the castle was seized.

I expected Guts to be fully recovered so that he can neutralize the son instantly. His wounds are healed and his fever is gone thanks to Chich but not his strengh, which I didn't think of. He was sick, had big wounds and couldn't eat anything for days. The ending is harshier than I wished it to be, but I should admit Chich's beautiful sacrifice saved the world's best swordsman's life. Otherwise, Guts might be killed futilely by a fat moron. And we should also keep in mind that Guts is quite often saved by elves. :iva: Lastly, it's touching to see how young Guts always kept Gambino's lessons in mind. It's a really really great episode.

No matter what other manga Miura will work on after Berserk I'm 100% sure it'll be a masterwork, even if it's a shoujo manga! Miura's ability is beyond that of a mangaka. He's a truly great storyteller. Too bad no movie nor animation can reproduce the quality of the manga.
