I finished Super Metroid on Friday. It might be one of the best games I've ever played, right up there with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Right now, I'm making my way through System Shock, which is great so far. I'd never even heard of it until I saw its sequel on IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time list.

You are plowing through these pretty fast, but what a backlog! I've pretty much given up on playing classics I missed from too long ago. No matter how transcendentally good they may be, it's just not a fair representation at a certain point. As in, there's no way for me to truly experience the impact on a gut level.

Thatís certainly true for the game I tried to play between Doom and Super Metroid: The Elder Scrolls: Arena. It was just too out-of-date to the point it wasnít fun to play. Iíve enjoyed almost all the games Iíve played so far, though, and Iím excited to keep going. Itís been so much fun. :serpico:

Man, I hope it doesn't take that long. :ganishka:

The modern one? Yeah, it was fun. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for in a Doom follow-up, but I had weird expectations for what it should actually be.

Cool. I'm planning on checking it out, but it's way down the list. :void:

Oh cool. Yeah, I actually play through Doom once every few years. It's pretty fantastic. The thought and care in level design and enemy placement still makes for a great game. Play through it in zDoom (enhanced graphics and mouseaim) and it's even better than the original.

I'll give that a try someday. :serpico:

Have you played the most recent version of Doom? If so, what did you think?

The modern Doom? What'd you think?

Nope, the original version from 1993. I played the crap out of Doom 64 when I was a teenager, but I never played the original. It was awesome!

I beat Secret of Mana yesterday. I was a little disappointed with it, mainly due to the poor translation and iffy controls (I played it on the iPhone, which was supposed to have a more accurate translation, but used the SNES translation for the most part). I found the gameplay a little repetitive and boring, too. Most bosses could be killed by spamming Popoiís magic. I didnít grow up playing Secret of Mana, so I didnít have any nostalgia attached to it, which probably helps when playing it today. Oh, well.

On to DOOM!

Glad you and your wife are enjoying the gift, Rhombaad! Sorry again for the wait. Bad form for one of the hosts of this thing to end up with a late delivery, but problems do come up.  :judo: :farnese:

Thanks, Grail!

No worries! It's not your fault the post office is finicky.

On New Years Eve we played a few games on a friend's SNES Classic - Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mario Kart (gave me motion sickness cos I wasn't used to seeing pixels move that fast), Super Ghouls and Ghosts and Contra III.

Nice!

I beat Adventures of Mana yesterday. It was a very well-made remake, though a bit on the easy side. Still a fun game to play. On to Secret of Mana!

I finished The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Christmas. It was a lot of fun playing it again. It was one of my favorites when I was growing up.

Now, it's on to Adventures of Mana! I played the Game Boy version (known as Final Fantasy Adventure) when I was a kid, but it's not available as a virtual console title, so the best way to play it now is the iOS remake. It's pretty good so far. Most of the original game is left intact, but the graphics and controls have been updated.

That's a nice list you got there. Reminds me of my childhood. :guts:

Mine, too. :serpico:

Edit: I finished Super Castlevania IV yesterday, so next up is The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening!

I enjoyed Super Castlevania IV a lot more than its NES counterpart. Castlevania just got way too frustrating towards the end, to the point where I wasn't having fun playing it anymore. Not so with SCIV. :serpico:

I finished The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past the other day. What a wonderful game. I can see why itís so beloved and considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever made. Now, itís on to Super Castlevania IV!

It's an interesting debate only because they do things a bit differently with SMB3 being a sprint (both in level design and because, let's face it, after the initial playthrough you're using those warp whistles =) of quick but endless imaginitive goodies and SMW being a marathon that bakes the imaginative goodies into every moment. I give it to SMW for being more substantial and timeless. As discussed not too long ago, that's still the pinnacle of Mario and platform gaming in my mind. I don't think SMB3 or really anything is better.

Agreed. I just enjoyed both so much, itís hard to pick a favorite.

BTW,  have you already played SMW2: Yoshi's Island? It's a very different and worthy entry to the canon in its own right.

I havenít, but itís on my list. Iíve heard great things about it.

I finished playing Super Mario World yesterday (beat Bowser after clearing 96 levels first). I enjoyed it a lot. Iím having a hard time deciding which I liked better, SMB3 or SMW, so for now Iíll say I liked them both evenly. :serpico:

Now, itís on to Metroid II: Return of Samus!

I finished Super Mario Bros. 3 this morning and started playing Super Mario World. It was really fun playing all the way through SMB3, since I was never able to do so as a kid. It's been about 25 years since I last played it, so it feels very satisfying to finally beat it. Take that, eight-year-old Rhomby!

As for SMW, I remember visiting my best friend across the street when the SNES came out and playing the two-player version with him for hours on end like it was yesterday (we played a lot of F-Zero and Street Fighter II Turbo, too). I never had time to beat it (since I owned a Genesis), but that's about to change. :badbone:

Hah, I doubt that many people out there have actually finished the game, and those who did, like me, know the pain of these two bosses. Congrats on beating it, corner trick or not!

Thanks, Aaz!

Duh. :iva:

:void:

I've never beaten Z2. That final dungeon defeated me as a child, and again as an adult when I tried replaying it on 3DS. It's just monstrous...

It's definitely one of the hardest final levels I've ever played.

As for using "cheap tricks," dude, it's you against an endless army in there! Anything that can tip things in your favor sounds legitimate to me.

Haha, that's true. One day I may try to beat Dark Link the "legitimate" way, but my list of other games to play comes first.  :badbone:
