I played through Final Fantasy XIII this year and I enjoyed it.  I don't think it deserves all all the hate it gets.  The story and characters were far less cringy than I expected and the battle system was actually really fun to me.  It had been a really long time since I played through a JRPG so coming straight off of XII it might be differen experiencet for you.

I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets, either. I've played it before, but never finished it. I enjoyed it then, and I think I'm enjoying it even more now. It's a gorgeous game with a unique plot and a fun battle system.

Which version did you end up playing? I wish that International version would get a wide HD release. I don't give two shits about 10 or 13, but would love to play through that game.

The American PS2 version. I hope the international version gets an HD release, too, just like Final Fantasy X did. I enjoyed Final Fantasy X's game play, but the voice acting was horrible. I was much more pleased with the acting in Final Fantasy XII and XIII.

Finally finished Final Fantasy XII. The story was pretty decent, and I enjoyed the battle system, but man did it take me forever to get all of the achievements. Now, it's on to Final Fantasy XIII!

I gave up on Ulysses months ago. I tried to prep for it by reading Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and The Odyssey, but I lost interest near the end of Dubliners. The writing was excellent, I just lost interest in the stories being told, so I turned to a favorite author of mine: Dan Simmons. I've read Song of Kali and Carrion Comfort. Now I'm taking a break from Simmons and reading The Walking Dead Compendium Three.

Another great podcast, guys! Hearing Aaz say, "He really wants to mingle!" made my day. I know it's probably an impossibility, but I would love an Aaz soundboard. "Attack dolphins, to the right!" :ganishka:

Berserk Anime / Re: New Berserk Anime for 2016
« on: March 07, 2016, 05:15:19 PM »
It hints to me they might skip him getting the Berserker Armor all together, at least as one full suit down the road. In the manga he was getting taken over by the Beast of Darkness well before he ever wore it.

We haven't seen anything that hints at Guts not getting the Berserk's armor. All we know is that he's wearing the armor Godot made for him in the trailer and preview images. If anything, this hints at them skipping over the armor he wore in the Black Swordsman arc and Lost Children chapter.

We don't need an introduction to Puck because he was in the wagon with Rickert at the end of the last movie. So they might just have him flying around Guts from the start. They need a reason to bring up what happened in the past, so the grave yard of swords will likely still be in there (and I hope they keep the rematch with Guts vs. Zodd if not this film then the next). Guts will more than likely still have nightmares about what happened and his fighting ghosts at night will remind us that he's a bad ass. He needs a motive other than kill kill kill, and we need a plot as well, so they'll likely rush Casca running off and getting found by a band of gypsies (I forget their names). Guts runs off to try and find her, kill apostles along the way, and hopefully we'll end up with Griffith being reborn into the world.

I don't think that would be a good way to handle the series at all. They should ignore the previous three movies and start fresh, faithfully adapting the manga. Also, Casca isn't found by a band of gypsies, she's found by Luka and her fellow prostitutes, who are on their way to Albion.

I think they could fit all of this into one film.

There's no way they could fit all of that into one film, and if they tried it would be a mess, just like the first three movies.

Movies, TV, Books & Music / Re: Movies you've recently watched

My wife and I have been watching a lot of the classics recently (Casablanca, All About Eve, North by Northwest, to name a few of the ones we've watched). Lately, we've been on a Charlie Chaplin kick. We've watched The Kid, The Gold Rush, Modern Times and The Great Dictator, all of which we enjoyed. Right now we're in the middle of A Woman of Paris.

I got my gift from Rhombaad the other day and got some awesome stuff!

An Eraserhead bluray I've been eyeing as well as some volumes of Berserk to help round out my collection. Hurray for Lynch solidarity Gobby! Thanks Rhomby, I'll probably watch the movie tonight or tomorrow! I'm really excited to see it in Criterion quality!

You're very welcome! I'm so glad you like them. :serpico:

I made a stamp by carving a piece of linoleum. I had to do it twice because the first time I got a little overzealous with my carving tool and cut off one of the little pointed prongy things on the top of the brand as well as messing up the border. But I just couldn't give up on the Berserk wrapping paper! :puck: The second time I took it slower and was more patient and things went much better. (Go figure, right?)

That is so cool. You did such a great job that I thought it was professionally done at first. I thought it was official wrapping paper from AoW that came with one of their statues.

Now THAT'S a good gift!

Hehe. :void:

It's quite disconcerting that there's still no hint of Puck in these promos.

I agree. The fact that he's still not wearing his original Black Swordsman armor is also disconcerting, especially if this is going to be an adaptation of the Lost Children chapter. As was said on the latest podcast episode, these details are important, and they were an early indication that the last project wasn't going to turn out well. I'll remain skeptical of this one until we see something of quality.

I absolutely loved this episode, from the monstrous pumpkins to the sexy, flamboyant witch riding a broom at the end. Miura never ceases to amaze me.

I loved Isidro tangled in the cute pumpkins, and Puck chowing down on them after the fight. I expected the episode to end midway through the wicker man fight, but Guts took him out quicker than I thought he would. He's getting pretty damn good at this monster-killing business. :guts: It's going to be a long wait until summer, but it's a great cliffhanger to leave off on. The perfect Christmas gift.

Thanks, man! I'm hoping to watch it this weekend. It's my favorite Pixar movie.

I received my gift a few days ago, but I'm lazy, so I'm just now posting about it. Unfortunately, I don't know who sent it to me, because there wasn't a name on the return address on the package, or anything inside that indicated who it was from.

I finished reading Casino Royale and am about half-way through Live and Let Die, which might be one of the most racist books I've ever read. I'd heard things about it before, but have been pretty surprised by the content so far.

I'm a little late to the party, but I also want to thank Aazealh for putting that post together. It has me really excited for all the possible avenues the story might take, now that the gang has landed on Skellig.

Exceptionally, because this is a momentous episode, here's a full transcript of what's being said. Keep in mind it's not from the original Japanese, so there might be errors. All the credit goes to puella as usual.

Thank you, Puella! You're the best! :ubik:

Hehe, it was pretty obvious after the least two episodes that we'd see it before the end of the year. :griffnotevil:

I'm also glad That Isma stayed with the group and I am curious as to what they are saying to her mother.

Me, too! I hope she sticks around for the remainder of the series. She's a great character.

I'd love for us to see Skellig by the end of the year, but I think we've got several more Falconia episodes to go.
I changed my vote. :void:

Called it. :troll:
