Ok so for reference the element of weight is called "Barytes" (in Japanese: "バリュテース"). It's from the Greek word "βαρύτης", itself derived from "βαρύς", which means "heavy".

In real life, it's a mineral (commonly called "baryte" or "barite" in English) that is the main source of barium in the world. But more interestingly for us, it used to be a big deal in the alchemical world when it was discovered that a certain type of it can glow in the dark. They used to call them Bologna Stones, because the first one was found near Bologna in Italy. Anyway, this has no direct bearing on Berserk's own world but it's where Miura got the name.

Please note that it is not pronounced like the English word "baryte", as Miura based it on the original Greek word (same thing than for the "Idea" in "Idea of Evil"). To an English speaker, it should sound like "ba-ree-tess".

Thanks for the explanation, Aaz!

So after much brow-furrowing (just like the Puck family), it is hereby decreed that the most accurate title for the Elf Queen is: Sovereign of the Flower Storm.
It's a mouthful, I know, but it's what best conveys the proper meaning of it.

I like it. :guts:

I couldn't help but notice the parallels between Misty Valley and Elfhelm, and the Sovereign of the Flower Storm and Rochine, either. Miura is great at that sort of thing. I hadn't thought about a parallel between Griffith and the Sovereign of the Flower Storm, though. That's an interesting idea.

I finished reading The Walking Dead: Compendium Three, read Summer of Night and am in the middle of reading Children of the Night. It's been tough getting through it, though, because I'm in the middle of writing a novel myself. Every time I sit down to read, I feel guilty about not writing. :void:

What an episode! I can't wait to see the pages close-up when I get home from work (right now I'm looking at them on my phone). It's this type of episode that keeps me in awe of Miura's genius. The art is incredible, and so is the storytelling.

I love that Danan turned out to be the Queen/Sovereign/Ruler of the Flower Storm. Her design is incredible and I love that her reveal was tied to the conclusion of Puck and Magnifico's scheme. (I love that Guts is the only one who doesn't react when Puck assumes the throne. He's been with him on the road too long to be fooled by his antics. :guts:)

Yep! Should be out in less than a week. :guts:

Well, I nailed that prediction. :troll:

I've talked about it before, so maybe you're thinking of that? Anyway I think it would be more interesting than a repeat of what happened at Flora's place. A supernatural attack might also befit the place itself more than monsters ready for slaughter, what with it being the Elf capital, plus being populated by magic users.

Maybe. I think it would be more interesting, too. My wife and I were discussing this scenario the other day, and we thought it would be cool having Ubik and/or Conrad show up, but what if Miura pulls something even more unexpected out of his hat: Void?

That's not a supposition, Ged says so in the episode. It's basically what Flora had told Schierke in volume 27 "I'll see you in your dreams." Maybe we'll finally get to see that. :ubik:

Gotcha. My bad. I hope so. That would be pretty sweet. :guts:

For some reason, I feel like a member of the God Hand is going to show up on the island at some point. I'm hoping it's Conrad, since we haven't seen as much of him as the others. I just can't see a bunch of apostles, Sonia and Mule arriving by boat or on the backs of flying apostles. Who knows what we're in for, though?

This was a very exciting episode for me. Since they set off for Elfhelm, I've been thinking about the new characters we'd meet. I'm looking forward to getting to know Kukka, Tune, Yoni, Molda and Ged better, and seeing even more characters join the cast.

In the podcast, it was supposed that Flora spoke to Ged from the astral world. If that's the case, I wonder if Schierke will be reunited with Flora through some form of astral communication in the next few episodes.

I think all of us are betting on seeing the Skull Knight at some point, too, but I have a feeling we may end up meeting him and the King of the Flower Storm at the same time. I have this image in my head of the king's reveal, with SK standing behind him and off to the side, as if they had been conversing before the group entered. :void:

Nice job! It's hard to believe Schierke has only been around since 2001. Feels like she's been a part of the series forever. This whole thing makes me feel old. :void:

It's your attitude that people don't like, not your opinions. You are where you are because of you, no one else. Take responsibility for your actions, instead of blaming everyone else.

And by the way, you don't make a very good case for yourself by insulting people, especially when those immature comments are shitty generalizations about another country and/or culture. Grow the fuck up.

Rochine and Jill's names are conspicuously absent from the cast list, and the only thing in the PV from Lost Children is the possessed tree, so I think it's safe to say it's being skipped, which is extremely disappointing. I can't stand the animation style, either. How hard is it to get an anime adaptation of Berserk right?

I liked your discussion about the plot and how some people believe that Berserk has been all about getting Casca to Elfhelm for the past decade and more. I've never understood that rationale. It's certainly the goal of Guts and his group, but the plot of anything (and Berserk is no exception) is about more than the individual characters' goals within the story.

I played through Final Fantasy XIII this year and I enjoyed it.  I don't think it deserves all all the hate it gets.  The story and characters were far less cringy than I expected and the battle system was actually really fun to me.  It had been a really long time since I played through a JRPG so coming straight off of XII it might be differen experiencet for you.

I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets, either. I've played it before, but never finished it. I enjoyed it then, and I think I'm enjoying it even more now. It's a gorgeous game with a unique plot and a fun battle system.

Which version did you end up playing? I wish that International version would get a wide HD release. I don't give two shits about 10 or 13, but would love to play through that game.

The American PS2 version. I hope the international version gets an HD release, too, just like Final Fantasy X did. I enjoyed Final Fantasy X's game play, but the voice acting was horrible. I was much more pleased with the acting in Final Fantasy XII and XIII.

Finally finished Final Fantasy XII. The story was pretty decent, and I enjoyed the battle system, but man did it take me forever to get all of the achievements. Now, it's on to Final Fantasy XIII!

I gave up on Ulysses months ago. I tried to prep for it by reading Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and The Odyssey, but I lost interest near the end of Dubliners. The writing was excellent, I just lost interest in the stories being told, so I turned to a favorite author of mine: Dan Simmons. I've read Song of Kali and Carrion Comfort. Now I'm taking a break from Simmons and reading The Walking Dead Compendium Three.

Berserk Anime / Re: New Berserk Anime for 2016

It hints to me they might skip him getting the Berserker Armor all together, at least as one full suit down the road. In the manga he was getting taken over by the Beast of Darkness well before he ever wore it.

We haven't seen anything that hints at Guts not getting the Berserk's armor. All we know is that he's wearing the armor Godot made for him in the trailer and preview images. If anything, this hints at them skipping over the armor he wore in the Black Swordsman arc and Lost Children chapter.

We don't need an introduction to Puck because he was in the wagon with Rickert at the end of the last movie. So they might just have him flying around Guts from the start. They need a reason to bring up what happened in the past, so the grave yard of swords will likely still be in there (and I hope they keep the rematch with Guts vs. Zodd if not this film then the next). Guts will more than likely still have nightmares about what happened and his fighting ghosts at night will remind us that he's a bad ass. He needs a motive other than kill kill kill, and we need a plot as well, so they'll likely rush Casca running off and getting found by a band of gypsies (I forget their names). Guts runs off to try and find her, kill apostles along the way, and hopefully we'll end up with Griffith being reborn into the world.

I don't think that would be a good way to handle the series at all. They should ignore the previous three movies and start fresh, faithfully adapting the manga. Also, Casca isn't found by a band of gypsies, she's found by Luka and her fellow prostitutes, who are on their way to Albion.

I think they could fit all of this into one film.

There's no way they could fit all of that into one film, and if they tried it would be a mess, just like the first three movies.

My wife and I have been watching a lot of the classics recently (Casablanca, All About Eve, North by Northwest, to name a few of the ones we've watched). Lately, we've been on a Charlie Chaplin kick. We've watched The Kid, The Gold Rush, Modern Times and The Great Dictator, all of which we enjoyed. Right now we're in the middle of A Woman of Paris.
