I've probably made a dozen or so unique Void avatars over the years (not including the emoticons, of course). But I've always favored avatars and sigs that don't draw too much attention to themselves. But I'm also the guy who has them turned off so I can browse semi-safely at work.

I was just wonderring about what Skullnight  once said to Guts, about what wanted may not be what Casca wants. So what do you guy's think. Will she return to Griffith's side once her memory is restored? Will the fact that Griffith's body is her son's sway her mind? Discuss!

Femto raped Casca and turned her son into an inhuman. What mental gymnastics are you pulling in your head for her to want to "return to Griffith?"

When Skull Knight mentions the dilemma (what you want may not be what she wants), it was brought up within the context of restoring her mind, which could imply that she does not want to be restored.

Not that anyone's shown any interests, but I just finished my watch through of Berserk 2017 on my imported Blu-Rays. Here's some notes for anyone interested.

Thanks for the list. Glad they fixed a few of the hilariously bad animations, but I'm not sure that series is salvageable. It's just a big fucking mess.

As cool as that would be.  :sad: I think he could definitely do it, but it would certainly be a tall order. At the same time, I can't imagine how difficult it would be to capture a change on the world of that scale. We don't even know what sort of effect that would have.

It wouldn't make a lot of sense. The implications of the Astral loosed on the Physical always made sense: Enoch was the perfect example. But the implications of a world of formless concepts merging with corporeal space...? Uh, it'd be hard to represent, that's for sure. I think the odds on that one are nil, honestly.

I think the World of Ideas was introduced as an avenue for Miura to establish a creation story for the world of Berserk, if he ever wanted to pursue that. Of course, he could also never address it again, and have its description as the origin of existence be all that we get.

I have heard some speculate that the God Hand would want to further transform the world by "merging" the World of Ideas with Fantasia. Maybe this would be the "perfect world" that the Egg Apostle desired to create by birthing Griffith's new vessel. Do you have any thoughts on that?

The Egg talks pretty clearly about how the incarnation of Femto will be the bridge between the old world and the new. And we already know what that new world is. Creating Fantasia was already the series' biggest spectacle. I don't see Miura doing that all over again, particularly for something where the stakes are unclear and unexplored.

This is easier to pull off, and I'm not saying easy as a slight, because it's also easy to screw up or misunderstand exactly what made something fun, so pulling it off as well as ALBW and Doom 16 is admirable, but it's much harder to create a successor that's equally fun and engaging that's also a unique and transcendent reinvention of the form in and of itself, from scratch. Practically impossible as you say because what could make it transcendent could also make it unrecognizable from its predecessors, "We don't want to make it too different from what people want/expect." So, many times it's too different or not enough, thus why the ALBW method is more effective since you're basically swinging into that familiarity the best you can while making it feel freshly modern.

Tell us more? I thought it was a nice return to form in a modern interpretation, at least as far as the gameplay went (the whole manually initiating big combat sequences was weird). It was definitely a "fun" vibe, which the original Doom had, though one didn't exactly imagine that's what it was all about or trying to convey as best it could in 1993 (Aliens with demons). Maybe that's why the 2016 version was ultimately fleeting; I played it, beat it, deleted it, and didn't think much more of it. Would you have preferred something with an atmosphere more like Doom 3 with the Doom 2016 engine or at least more speed?

I think they successfully made Doom relevant again, which is a huge feat. It's just not the successor I was hoping for. And honestly, I don't even know how to explain what I want. I suppose I wanted something crazy, like a direct evolution of what Doom 1-2 were, not a full-scale reboot. Something that was faster, more enemies on screen, more care into enemy placement, weapon spawns, etc. Imagine '90s Doom + Super Meat Boy, with levels that could be played (and replayed) quickly and mastered over time. What we got with Doom 2016 was a bit too cinematic and linear for me, the forced melee stuff fell flat, and the whole experience didn't really hold my attention longer than it took to beat it.

The modern one? Yeah, it was fun. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for in a Doom follow-up, but I had weird expectations for what it should actually be.

Nope, the original version from 1993. I played the crap out of Doom 64 when I was a teenager, but I never played the original. It was awesome!

Oh cool. Yeah, I actually play through Doom once every few years. It's pretty fantastic. The thought and care in level design and enemy placement still makes for a great game. Play through it in zDoom (enhanced graphics and mouseaim) and it's even better than the original.

I get what you're saying, and the child's appearance seems like a curveball at first, but I just can't rationalize how Miura would pivot away from the rape at this point. The event would be painfully informative to Schierke and Farnese about the terror and trauma it inflicted on Guts and Casca. Do you remember when Schierke was in Guts' mind (vol 27)? She got glimpses of those events, but no context. I feel like if Miura were ever to address that section, it's now or never.

I think the point of that scene was to Guts have the closest brush with his dark side that he's ever had and to realize just how dangerous he could be to the people close to him if he loses control.

I don't think what we're saying is in disagreement. The above is what I meant by the "desperate situation" when it was just he and Casca, and as for the danger he presents, that's how he could "lose everything."

I really liked the climbing. Thematically, a small human conquering a huge mountain also worked well with the game.

I do wish there were 1 or 2 more mechanics to master so that you could get "better" at it over time — something like active reloading right as the stamina meter is about to be depleted could have been interesting. But I liked looking at a big ass cliff in your way, judging whether you can climb it or not, climbing, just baaaarely getting over it (before you realized you could just eat 5 meals to get over a big one  :guts: ) and then getting a nice vantage point on where you were and where you're going.  The fact that the music worked right along with it was a nice touch too.

Having a hookshot would immediately trivialize that aspect of the game. Now, end-game material? Sure why not, if the hardware supports it. But I would want the mechanic to be more than a time-saver, and something that actually added to the fun of traversing the game.

You bring up a good point about the items needing to be open-ended in terms of their function. That's what all of the abilities in BotW were about: abstract functions that the game encourages you to use creatively throughout your encounters. Going back to an arsenal of items with discrete functions for discrete challenges — even if they're fun for the 5 minutes they were designed for — would be pretty backward facing, I think.

But at the same time I feel that those post-Eclipse memories that the rest of Guts' Band haven't seen (particularly those to do with Casca's child and Guts' sexual assault) are things that the rest of the party needs  to become aware of at some point, and this would be a really good time for that.

I don't think it's necessary for the group to see Guts in that moment of weakness, for which he's already paid community service for (Enoch troll cleanup duty counts, right?). In all seriousness, I don’t think Miura wrote that scene to color Guts as a sexual abuser, but to demonstrate how desperate the situation was when it was just him and Casca on the journey, and how close Guts came to losing everything. It was a terrible moment on his otherwise stoic journey. Guts knows that, and it's why he agreed to have companions.

Maybe historic items will be woven back in somehow in future Zeldas, but after Breath of the Wild, I feel like Nintendo has a blank check on where they take the series. So I'd be fine if they shed that older stuff. I don't think the series really needs to include old items to make it great. The 2 previous incarnations of the franchise felt weighed down by all that shit.
