Shootin' the Breeze / Re: Help a newbie catch up
« on: October 09, 2001, 01:59:17 PM »

You're not missing anything, It's probably a misinterpretation on the anime series you've watched.  Griffith was considered as a savior, maybe, but not a King for sure.  You know, there are those "fan translations/subtexts" out there that are done quite improfessionally.

Well...its what they said in the Japanese script too. Its just a BIG ASS ERROR. Lets leave it at that.

This is mentioned in the manga.  It gets all complicated, no use explaining unless you read the manga yourself.

Well, you are correct that it gets complicated but its never really explained why Godo takes Guts under his wing. Actually Godo is much more elaborated in the anime (at least during Guts time of post-hawks) than in the manga. The manga's scenes with Godo (in vol 10) are nearly all flashbacks, and make for some very confusing continuity.

Godo's "daughter" (she's adopted) CANNOT have much of a relationship with Rickert.  Apparently, she's supposed to be a VERY young child.  Rickert is more like her big brother, no matter how hard you try to force a relationship upon them, it'd at least be a decade before she can bear children!

Im not so sure about that....Guts mentions something about this to RIckert in chapter 184, and Rickert more or less doesnt deny that he ahs feelings for her. Id say if Rickert is around 15, then Erica is about 12. Thats not TOO absurd.

nope.  not at all.

Im not really sure where you get off saying its "not at all" connected with the main plot...but, its fairly clear that the events in the game will fall into place in the near future of the manga.

Personally, I think it's quite impossible to guess the plot of Berserk from pictures.  The most interesting thing other than the occasional brutal combats are the philosophies and the developments of characters behind the blood and gore.

I built an entire website on Berserk, and I cant read a lick of Japanese.

it was a 'speculation', and belonged in the 'speculations' section, not 'shootin the breeze'.

Yeah, we've seen it already, it was on the last Kenshin DVD. Icefall has a video of it on his site actually  :-/

Jesus, please stop comparing berserk to hellraiser...     :P

But...its an intentional likeness. Miura has confirmed it.

I wouldn't say Berserk realy could change anyones life for the better...

Why couldnt it? It did several things for my life. Ive been extremely inspired by Griffith and Guts.

I am already familiar with the Berserk story line and all that, but I just wanna know what the overall mood of the manga is before I buy it.  Is it depressing?  If it is, is too depressing at times to enjoy?  I just want to know what I'm gettin' myself into before I buy the mana.

Mood? Eh...Id say the mood "dark", but many of the underlying themes are "survival" and "dreams", things not necessarily associated at all with depression.

No...In summation, Berserk is far from a depressing story. Quite the opposite really.

Shootin' the Breeze / Re: What is your favourite moment in the Anime?
« on: October 22, 2001, 09:30:22 AM »
Oh, one more scene that I really cant believe I forgot about. As Guts runs away from Godo's cave in volume 13, his bandages ripped from his body by the thorns and his own actions. He thinks of the Hawks and how they will never come back, and he thinks of the times that they had together his only family.

The panels that Miura chose to portray Corkas, Pippin, and Judeau are simply...tear-jerking.

This scene is by far the most emotional for me.

Griffiths sacrifice is also my favorite moment in the manga and the anime. Every second of that scene just sends goosebumps down my body.

Coming a close second is watching the entire Skully scene in volume 13, as he drops down from the sun and attempts to kill Void. Surely one of the most surreal and progressive scenes in the manga.

Going back for just a sec....
In the Visual and Story File for the DC game there is a painting on the cover sleeve insert. It's of a man in a black turleneck with pillars of stone in the backdrop. Does anyone know who the painting is of...?  ???

I personally, definitely want it all to come to a climactic conclusion. Im sure Miura could go on for years by introducing a new apostle for Guts to fight per manga...but that would just be plain B A D.

Thankfully, Miura has strayed from that path that far too many manga/anime writers exemplify and he more or less has stuck to the main plot of Berserk throughout the entire series. Each event leading to another, giving depth to the characters, while constantly having us learn more about the Berserk universe. For me, Berserk is nearly an ideal series in terms of character depth and sheer ammount of plot twists. Its the 'thing' ive been searching for for years.

And it MUST end. Soon.

Age won't stop a good manga writer. My current fave is will be 54 come decemeber and she's still writing long series.

But...dont you want Berserk to end?

Um...yes I know he has eyes. I was pointing out that we only see them a few times i.e. very serious moments. From the only picture I've seen of Miura (the one with the Dragonslayer) I didn't notice many similarities to Pippin. Btw, where did you read that?

Olivier told me its from an interview.

Shootin' the Breeze / Re: Isn't it interesting?

Don't forget Pippin either. He was unselfish and loyal to the end but you have to wonder if he had a dream of his own? Like Judeau, it seems all his personal matters were forfeited for the betterment  of the  Hawks. I also thought it was interesting that when he fends off the apostles for Casca it is a rare moment when you see his eyes (Icefall pointed that out and it is true in the manga also).

Well, Pippin was modeled after Miura, physically. (seriously) so of COURCE he has eyes  :)

The real Griffith is alive and well. I made sure of it the other day when I emailed him. Hes just not posting as much anymore. I think we ALL have become a little bit bitter recently.

Oh and without any confirmation, Ill go ahead and get out on a limb and say THATS NOT HIM....

Shootin' the Breeze / Re: A translations summary?
« on: November 06, 2001, 05:58:28 PM »
Well, the aclimate ones arent THAT bad, they just have bad english and skip around once in a while, and thats fine by me since I already have a pretty broad understanding about whats going on in the first place...andyou being a veteran of BSOM, should also know these things.

A FAQ addition about what trans. are currently available? I dunno...I think my Translations section is pretty complete in telling us that =). Erias translations dont count because theyre not on the net anymore, and from what I recall they were full of errors.

yeah, i saw his name on the bsom bbs and thought it was weird that his name was so similar to the one i always use, so i guess your suspicions are understandable. now that i think about it, he probably was inspired by the same thing I was for the name.

Cardboard Toast Halloween Man?

I guess no one remebers the shit that CTBM wreaked on BSOM and here.

His name is cthm, absurdly similar and also an extremely ODD name to have. I dont think its him anymore, but I do think that my suspicion was well warranted, what with me, Olivier and Cronus being email bombed by the guy for over 3 months.

I just thought I should explain myself.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone was still scanning in the mangas and a circle of people distributing them so that they still get to see the latest ones.  Question is...  HOW DO I GET IN THE LOOP!!!  (echoing desperate scream)  ;D

Thatd be a pretty damned good idea if I wasnt so lazy.
