Well, that was brilliant.

Vagabond / Musashi "Pilgrimage" in Japan
« on: July 08, 2014, 02:43:00 AM »
So, life in Japan has been quite peachy so far. But it's time to get serious.

For the Obon holiday, my wife and I are going an eight day trip to Kyūshū where we intend to go see the sights and sounds of the Island. While in Kyūshū, I plan on fulfilling a long-standing hope of mine: to visit Ganryūjima and Kumamoto to pay homage to Musashi. The flights, ryokans and hotels have been booked. Now it's just a matter of doing this thing. Thought I might share with you all and ask if there's anything the community would be interested in seeing.

Here's the rough plan:
  • Ganryūjima
  • Reigan Cave
  • Kumamoto Castle
  • Musashi's meditation stone
  • Musashizuka Park (a statue and grave sight for Musashi are here)
This should cover most of the Musashi sights. Thankfully, I live somewhat close to his birthplace, but that's another trip for another time.

I have not received my YA yet but saw these on Yahoo Auctions.  looks like we get more than one, pretty cool.

Just picked up my copy from my local bookstore. They're really cool!

Just caught up with Vagabond.

I remembered why I loved the farming section of the book so much now - Inoue fully realized the emotions of those chapters in his retelling. Even though it seems to be ready to move on, it left me feeling very emotional and kind of wanting more. Seeing Takuan was also a huge bonus and increased the poignancy of Musashi asking Sado for help by an order of magnitude.

Going to stalk the shelves of convenience stores while I'm here whenever Morning comes out.

Given how much larger the audience for the games has become, I don't think that will be an issue.

75% through Bioshock Infinite. It's the first tour of a Bioshock game for me and it's really impressive.

This most recent set of trailers has me going bonkers with anticipation. Here's hoping the community sticks around as long as they have for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. I'm going to be in Japan for 14 months starting in February, and it's unlikely I'll get to play it during that time  :judo:

It's Miura's wildest Berserk fantasies that he can't do because fans pissed their pants over trolls and magic armor. =)

Could also be reverse psychology/testing the water for the final giant Beast vs. giant Femto kaiju fight that trashes Falconia.

Haha, we can only hope.

I know you're just relaying the text, but they spelled the title wrong. It's Gigantomachia (the ch sound is the same as in Deus Ex Machina, which is why the Katakana is spelled that way). As Aazealh noted, it's also based on a real term:

Yurp - looks like they updated it to Gigantomakhia from an alternate spelling. Looks like they took the katakana literally in the first draft.

Shit. Created a topic in Berserk Miscellaneous for this. Anyway.

My wife let me know her colleague posted this:

This year's 22nd issue of Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine is announcing on Friday that Kentarou Miura will launch a brand-new original manga mini-series called Gigant Makia. The six-chapter story is set in a world 100 million years in the future, and it will begin with a 44-page chapter with a color opening page. Young Animal adds that Miura's Berserk manga will resume after his new mini-series.

Hakusensha published the 37th compiled book volume of Berserk in Japan on March 29. Dark Horse Comics will publish the same volume in North America in December.

Really interested to see what Miura will conjure with this mini-series.

Anime Asylum / Re: Viz Media Licenses Berserk Film Trilogy

Too bad they didn't license the manga. :griffnotevil:

Glad we've got some idea when we'll see it. I really only know the (mostly) fine work Viz Media has done with Vagabond and Real, but what's their reputation when it comes to video releases?

They're not known for their punctuality when it comes to their release schedules. Viz Media's video releases are decent enough. Not too many blu-ray releases. But their known for working very closely with their Japanese counterparts, considered that their owned by Shōgakuka Shūeisha. I wouldn't expect more than a slip-cover from their physical release.

First film will be released "this fall" apparently.

As has been reiterated for readers about 3 different times in the series since vol 28, the full moon enhances magical effects. It's also a time when the mind becomes easily unhinged.

Maybe it's related to The Eclipse, too.

Pretty blatant, now...

Decent episode - some sad scenes with Guts in the mix. Hoping he'll bounce back once he gets to meet the fairies. Not encouraged by the "To be continued..." - the date, though. Hoping we see more Berserk in a couple of weeks.

Glad to see someone beat me to the news!

Yeah, I'm stoked to have Berserk and Vagabond back in full swing!

Shall give it a listen!

Edit - I really liked this. Really candid and kind of reinvigorated my interest in the series. A re-read retrospective would be pretty fascinating. Also like the the "Off-topic" section - good opportunity to break some of the awkwardness. "But wait I minute - what about Vagabond?!" gave me a good chuckle.

ANN posted impressions today:

As you might guess, the animation was the movie's biggest "flaw" -- if that's the right word for it.

*sigh* here's what I'm interested in -

Knight of Skeleton [Horse-riding figure]
Griffith on Horse
Puck Yoda
Puck Doreamon
Puck Sergeant
Armored Berserk and mini fire dragon bust
Guts: Millenium Falcon : Magun
Zodd: Human form
Zodd Apostle 1 With Wings

I have a Griffith horse that I am looking to sell =)
