Video Games / Blazblue: Calamity Trigger
« on: April 26, 2009, 09:39:57 PM »
It's a new fighter for PS3 and the 360 from Arc System Works (The guys behind the Guilty Gear series).  It's scheduled to come out June 29th.

This game has me hyped, as it looks really fun.  Also, reports from the arcades have given it pretty glowing reviews.

Here's a vid and a trailer:

What I find interesting is that I've heard of boxing related deaths but I haven't really heard of MMA deaths. I mean there was Vasquez in 2006 or 07. Don't really recall any others.

MMA fighters don't get punched in the head as much.  They occasionally eat some absolutely brutal shots, but not nearly as often as boxers.  And the refs in general seem quicker to stop a match.

As a long time street fighter fan I love this game but I still think Third Strike is better

Oh, I completely agree with this.  3S was and is a fantastic game.  But to be fair, it was also the third iteration of SF3.  I fully expect a revision or two for SF4.  Especially considering the disparity in Ultras, since Ryu, for example, has several ways of comboing into his, whereas Vega's can go over and whiff standing opponents, and is pretty much impossible to combo.

I'll mainly list stuff I've not seen mentioned so far.

Planescape: Torment
Final Fantasy Tactics
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike

And, hell, I'll go more old school than any of you.
Go and Chess

Another example for graphics could be Rumble Fish 2.

Thanks for the scans scanbot.

Is Ganishka making the Korgoth?*

*Yes, I'm throwing down the Total Annihilation reference.

Well, to be fair, prior to the Anniversary collection, SF2 only had 4 revisions.  And the original needed to be revised, since it basically became a race to select Guile (With Dhalsim occasionally managing to pull off the upset).

As for SF4, I admit, I like 2D fighters better than 3D.  SF2 is basically the foundation for every 2D fighting franchise.  Sure other games have their own additions to the formula, but they all rely on the same basic gameplay features.  So I would be more comfortable with it being 2D.

So if Capcom can pull off something similar for 3D fighters, I won't begrudge them that.  Specifically, If they go 3D, I'm hoping they make a fighter that incorporates spacing and zoning much more into it than the current crop (which mostly rely on frame advantage).  And has a combo system similar to 3rd Strike.

I swear it better be 2D with sprite animations being better than Accent Core, or at least on par. I dont, I repeat DONT want SFIV being 3D, no series that has started out 2D has ever survived the tradition to 3D. Mortal Kombat, KoF Maximum Impact anyone? Yeah they were horrible. Capcom stick to your roots...........please.

3rd Strike is animated better than GG (seriously, that game is damn smooth), but Guilty Gear has much higher resolution sprites.

One of the main problems 3rd Strike had was it's lack of availability on home consoles, since there was only a Dreamcast release before the Anniversary Collection came out.  And it was far from arcade perfect, which hurt the sales among the big time fighter crowd.

Thanks CnC.

The Beast of Darkness seems to be playing off Guts' fear of losing everyone again and his feeling of impotence when it comes to Griffith.  Especially since the last time he saw him, Guts was too torn up to do anything.

And I have to echo the sentiments of absolutely gorgeous art.

Accent Core has been acquired.

Thanks for the episode scanbot.

Maybe it would help calm the beast if Farnese whispered sweet nothings into Guts' ear?

Street Fighter Alpha 3 (IMO the saturn version is the best)

The best version is probably the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology.

Though I prefer 3rd Strike.  Makes me glad I picked up the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection.
I hope they rerelease MvC2 somehow (hopefully arcade perfect), but there may be some legal issues with the Marvel characters.

Well, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core is coming out for PS2 Next Month in America.  And apparently Aksys Games is fixing the bugs that plagued the Japanese release.

Interesting enough.  I want to see two things soon:
1. Robin fighting
2. More Oz

I'd heard of Man-Faye for years, but I had successfully avoided him until you Saiya.

Thanks Saiya.

Too bad for the pirates that Roderick is so good on the sea, but our intrepid band also has firepower on the ship beyond cannons.  Hmm, I wonder what Schierke could call up from the ocean.  Of course, it might not be necessary if Roddy is as good as advertised.

Well, Capcom has confirmed that they are working on a new 2D fighter, but it's not SF4.  It's based on something I've never heard of.  Still, it's good to see that they haven't completely abandoned the genre.  Here's hoping that it turns out better than CFJ/CFE.  It's supposed to be shown at their private show in August.

Edit: Apparently it's based on Devil Kings aka Sengoku Basara in Japan.  Rumor is that Arc System Works might also be involved.

I wouldn't mind seeing another MvC2 style fighter again either.

I was taking his disadvantages into consideration, but you did have me on the specials, I really forgot how terrible they were.

Well to rag on Sean some more, his dragon punch gets beat out by throws.
And I've heard that Makoto might've taken Ken's spot in the top tier.  It's kinda up in the air, Ken plays safer, but if Makoto guesses right 2-3 times, she wins the match.

In Guilty Gear news, the PS2 release of AC was apparently pretty glitch heavy, though there is a Wii release scheduled, hopefully it'll turn out better.  Still sad that Johnny is on the bottom tier. He was the first character I learned to play as in GGXX.

Thanks Saiya.

And just the other day I was just thinking to myself that Guts took a lot of tissue damage to his face, and lo and behold, he's sporting a nice new patchwork of scars.  But at least he's up and mobile sans armor.

Well, it was also a good shock image for the first page of Berserk.  Besides, it got Guts past her defenses.

I don't really see Griffith becoming worse than Ganishka, unless he turns his goal into total world conquest.  In fact, I wonder how long he'll keep the basest apostles around once he offs Ganishka, since they could tarnish his messianic image.

Aaz has had the scans for weeks now.  He just gets his jollies from watching the guest numbers rise and posters beg for Berserk goodness.

He doles them out based on board ranking  :troll:

I think the shotokans were pretty balanced in SF3, even Sean had his knacks (still not a fave though). I do agree with some people that Ken experienced a serge in popularity after the (now infamous) daigo incident, and I think a lot of people tend to over-estimate Ken in the long run now (still my favorite SF character overall actually).

Ken is solidly top tier.  While he doesn't have Genei-Jin or something comprable, he is just good in every area, so he has no real weakness.  And Ken was popular pre-Daigo vs. Wong anyways.

Sean's only saving graces are shoto normals and a fast dash.  All his specials suck (seriously, his version of hurricane kicks is punishable on hit) and his supers are nothing to brag about either.

And what's changed about Johnny in AC? I haven't seen or played it yet, so did they change his sprite or is his character portrait bleh?

No, they changed the Mist Finers and Divine Blade Transport.  Looks like no more 1-hit Ensengas because of the DB changes, and Lv.2 MF is no where near as good as it was anyways.  His new Killer Joker move looks interesting though, and 6K being Mist Cancelable is cool.  But from what reports I've seen, the changes to DBT have killed his high/low game.

SF Doesn't seem to need a new installment to me.  3rd Strike works well, and aside from maybe some ballance issues on the side of the Shotokans, I can't think of much that needs changing.  Maybe if they brought back some of the old cast it might make the game a bit more interesting though, I mean who the fuck thought of characters like 12, Necro, Oro, and the near naked Urien who spouts out sadistic phrases like 'Kill!' while he fights.

I wouldn't mind a Capcom All-stars fighting game, as long as it doesn't seem just slapped together like CFE did.

The only Shoto balance problems I see in 3S is that Sean sucks, and Ken is just a little bit too good.  But Ken has nothing as abuseable as Yun's SAIII.

I have a feeling GGXX will end with Accent Core.  XX revamped the system into what it is now, #Reload ballanced it, and Slash added some of the characters from Isuka (and kinda broke the system with new moves), so hopefully Accent Core will top off the system and be the final, ballanced version with a complete cast and system.  I've heard rumors of a 3D version being the next installment, which will likely suck utterly but has potential for total awesomeness if pulled off correctly.  How the hell they plan to do characters like Faust and Eddie/Zato-1 is beyond me though.

I doubt it will end with Accent Core, mainly because they added so many features that I'd expect a few more rebalancings.  Though from what I've heard, Slash is more balanced than #R, since Eddie pretty much owned everyone else in #R, though he was even more broken in XX.

And I don't like the look of AC Johnny.  So I'm hoping for rebalances anyways.

I wouldn't mind seeing another SF game come out.

I'm wondering when the next GG will come out, since Accent Core came out before I could get Slash.
