Balkanisation of the internet ???

Not really sure if this is old news but it is interesting.

Who knows the whole process could go either way but somehow the notion of the internet being segregated, so to speak, sounds kinda creepy to me.
Oh, plus the term "balkanisation"... don't really know what to say about it.

I'm all too familiar with the term Balkanisation. Had a Geography 101 test and that term showed up more than once.

"Balkanization The fragmentation of a political area into many smaller independent units, as in the former Yugoslavia in the Balkan Peninsula."

Yeah, the spell it with a "Zee" in the bloody country

It's a real concern indeed, and while it's not really new it's definitely not a dead issue. The Internet as we know it will have to evolve to meet new needs, and all I hope is that it won't just become an agglomeration of different networks controlled by different people and with different rules, segregated and more or less hostile to each other.
