New Viz editions

What he's got there is an earlier printing of volume 2, my volumes 1-4 all look like that. You can also tell the difference from the logo at the top and bottom of the spines, the one's that say editor's choice are older, while recent printings have that flower-like logo. There's all sorts of little variations and unique characteristics to each volume as the presentation of the series has changed, the strangest is that my volume 6 is noticeably shorter than the others, and it's the only cover with a glossy finish. They all look good and consistent on the inside though, a few typos excluded. I've come to like the little differences, it's like a story in itself as the look of the volumes have evolved. =)

Well, it does make for an interesting story which is nice at least, but the OCD side of me wants everything perfect and orderly! :troll:

Update: I went to KinoK this evening pick up my specially ordered edition of YAnimal (they called me last week for the prior issue I ordered), and I thought it'd be a good chance to look for my missing volumes. I picked up volume 22! And, I saw an art book by the author called 'Water' which I also picked up. It's BEAUTIFUL inside, wow. I also picked up the Claymore book which came newly to the store, and I'd been eying the VHD art book for a while, so I figured why not, get broke worse while you're at it aha ha ha ha >_>'

I put in a special order for the other missing volumes, and it looks like 4, 7, 15, 16 are out of print and while they've put in my request, they're not sure they'd get it haha! Wow. Sucks for me.

There's another Vagabond artbook called Sumi that showcases Inoue's spectacular ink work throughout the series. It's not as colorful, but it's no less beautiful.

That VHD Amano artbook looks particularly intriguing.

Yeah, that's the major hazard of going back and trying to get the original volumes as opposed to the VizBigs. Hopefully it's just a gap between the original printing and the second editions of those volumes. Which makes some sense for volumes 15 and 16 since the image you posted of your volumes shows that the reprints go to at least volume 14, but that doesn't explain the unavailability of 4 and 7, unless the second printing sold out as well or they simply didn't reprint those volumes? Strange, in any case, I'll see what I can do for you.

I'll be back.

Try looking for those on used bookstores. I know you might not find them all, but who knows. I know of one here that I think has all those volumes. Interested? :guts:

I just ordered Sumi, and the other missing volumes off the links you sent me - thanks much! I'll send KinoK an email asking them to withdraw the special order, if possible. I just took off the skrink wrap on the VHD artbook, and here're some pics -

I love the uniqueness (like Inoue's), and the old school look to be honest, it's what drew me into the series years ago.

Oh cool, thanks for the offer maan ^_^ ... I ordered those volumes before hitting up this topic tonight. From the local stores, I tried Mid-Town Comics and Forbidden Planet, they didn't seem to have em last week *sigh* ... but, will keep you posted when I get the missing single volumes ^_^

No problem, and that Amano VHD artbook exceeds my expectations, some of those paintings are just gorgeous.

*OFFTOPIC* I went through the book last night after clicking pictures because I was surprised ... it felt like a hidden gem of sorts. I've re-read the manga a few times, but this is full of brush strokes (raw~ish), and color portraits towards the end.

That was quick, I got an email that Vol 7 was being shipped out already. Sweet :griffnotevil: *aaauuuuuuuu!!!!*

It seems releases are slowing down for the Vizbig editions. I'm assuming it's due to the Vizbig editions finally catching up. Looks like that won't happen until 3rd quarter next year though.

Here's a quick history for reference:

Volume 1: 8/16/08
Volume 2: 12/16/08 4 months
Volume 3: 4/21/09 4 months
Volume 4: 7/21/09 3 months
Volume 5: 10/20/09 3 months
Volume 6: 1/19/10 3 months
Volume 7: 4/20/10 3 months
Volume 8: 7/20/10 3 months
Volume 9: 11/16/10 4 months
Volume 10: 4/19/11 5 months
Volume 11: ?

Well, not too bad yet, just a couple months, but has there been any change in the number of volumes per Vizbig, or has it remained 3 every time?

If it's fluctuated at all, would someone give me a list of regular volumes to corresponding Vizbig editions?

Every Vizbig has had 3 volumes so far all the way up to Vizbig volume 8. Amazon says that volume 9 is only 200 pages, but it's almost assuredly incorrect as every other edition is 600 pages+

Edit: Viz's product page doesn't say page length either but it's probably safe to assume it's still 3 volumes. Here's the description for volume 9 if it makes any difference (probably doesn't):
It's been one year since Yoshioka Denshichiro granted Musashi a reprieve for a rematch. Denshichiro may have been a better swordsman back then, but with Musashi before him now, he realizes the truly incredible strides his opponent has made in such a short period of time. By sheer force of will, a reluctant Denshichiro moves forward into the fight. And what will the deadly repercussions be for Musashi after this duel that's all but already won?

Yeah, I saw that too when I updated the Merchandise section actually, it seems like they just had the info for a regular volume.

That's actually what threw me initially, the descriptions don't summarize the entire collection, in this case covering only the beginning of 25, which would basically only be the climax of the buildup in the last big edition, and completely ignoring the last 2/3s of this one. Now I'm squared aweay though, thanks.
