Here is a thread with more pictures. It's all in Russian, i don't understand what they are saying . http://lana-sator.livejournal.com/160176.html#cutid1

Spectacular pictures. Like in more cases than one would suspect, reality beats fiction.

Yet, I still think of it in terms of fiction; looks like stuff from The Empire Strikes Back. :guts:

I got one of my Russian speaking friends to translate some of the stuff in there. According to her live journal, Lana Sator has made her trip to that liquid rocket-fuel factory not once, but no less than 5 different times. She also includes a brief history of the factory itself, which has been continuously in operation since 1929. Not surprising, since USSR was one of the earliest countries that was seriously interested in jet aviation and space travel, and to invest in them. The third pic is a scan of a warning sign that was placed on a protective fence, that warns that as the area contains various dangerous chemicals and is sanitarily unsafe, any land developments in nearby areas surrounding the factory must absolutely obtain a special permission from the Russian government itself. Also, as usual, any and all the tresspassers will be severely punished by the law. A warning that Lana probably should have heeded. Considering how infuriated Russian government is at her and given the defiant "fuck you" nature of her activities, they probably have some kind of connection to the recent Russian anti-government protests and, considering the factory's proximity to the Khimki forest, to the popular protest movement to save that said forest as well.

Probably the funniest Not-News I've heard in a while.
http://gothamist.com/2012/01/26/man_offers_football_fan_500_bucks_f.php
I *desperately* need to learn about football between now and next week's Super Bowl game. My girlfriend and I were just invited to a Super Bowl party at her ex-boyfriend's apartment, and to be honest, last time I met him he told me he played football in college and I responded that I did as well—which was a lie.
I really don't know anything about football except for the fact that touchdowns how you score points and sometimes you kick the ball. I've been reading articles on ESPN.com and watching clips online but I don't think it's going to prepare me for questions about actually playing it, or for making good comments during the game. So I need someone who can *quickly* teach me about all of things I would have learned playing football as well as what to say about it.
This is really important to me. I think my girlfriend still really likes her ex and when we first started dating she cheated on me a few times with him, so I really can't risk looking like an idiot in front of both of them. Seriously, this is really important. My girlfriend and I are going through a bit of a rough patch now and she keeps threatening to move out.

Man my cheating girlfriend is going to lose me if I don't know football. :judo:

Yikes, when did Arnold turn into William Shatner?

Anyway, in more eccentric news...

Meet the man without a heart.
In March of last year, Craig Lewis, 55, was dying from a heart condition that caused build-ups of abnormal proteins, and not even a pacemaker could help save his life.
But two doctors from the Texas Heart Institute proposed a revolutionary new solution – install a ‘continuous flow’ device that would allow blood to circulate his body without a pulse.
Dr Billy Cohn and Dr Bud Frazier installed the device after removing Mr Lewis’ heart. Within a day, the patient was up and speaking with physicians.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney underwent the same procedure. It's pretty amazing what doctor's are capable of doing these days.

Investigators say the FBI was notified in November of a Facebook page Lowell created under the alias Anne Lowery offering $830 to $850 for the hit and saying the ideal candidate would live in northeast Ohio, according to an FBI affidavit filed with the court on Friday.

The affidavit says an FBI employee posing as a possible hit man later began email correspondence with Lowell, and she offered him $730 in jewelry or cash for the killing of a victim of at least 12 years but "preferably 14 years old or older" outside a library near a playground in her hometown.
...

She told the undercover employee she wanted to be on site when the slaying took place so she could distribute "papers" afterward, the affidavit says. She hoped to be arrested so she could call attention to her beliefs and to get out of the home she shared with her parents and brothers who eat meat and eggs and use fur, leather and wool, investigators said.

The US Government Officially Declared That The X-Men Aren’t Human

http://www.mediaite.com/online/good-to-know-the-us-government-officially-declared-that-the-x-men-arent-human/

The picture on the above entry is perfect, but the real article is especially interesting:

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/30/x-men-arent-human-us-govt-says-but-hulk-is/

The judge found that the X-Men and other superheroes’ abilities made them more than mere mortals, and thus they could not be classified as humans, as stated in the court’s decision:

“They are more than (or different than) humans … a 'mutant' is someone with an extraordinary appearance or abilities

So, there's already real legal precedent against the humanity of mutants!

That story sounds like bullshit, but it's not... here's the full court filing. http://www.scribd.com/doc/80941044/Matthew-Corrigan-v-District-of-Columbia

Utterly ridiculous that this happened to him.

Yep. Honestly I'm surprised they waited for animal control, maybe they're getting reluctant with the killing dogs thing. Anyways, I honestly hope the guy wins and reels in the abuses of power the police have been committing with their 'No-Knock raids'.

I wonder if they happen to have his conversation with the suicide hotline recorded. Most likely not. Still, what a mess.

Common Sense: "Morons!"

It's hard to believe that things like that can happen in a developed country. I hope these guys all lose their badges and get thrown in jail for good measure.

Yeah, though part of me likes to think this could only happen in a developed country; dehumanized to point of disconnects like this. Somewhat Kafkaesque too.

Even if the guy wins, and even if new federal laws are passed as to how police can/can't act in these situations, I think we all know that there is a certain authority and power that local police will always have over the average Joe. Abuses of power will continue to exist as long as there is that power structure in our society.
