What Are You Playing?

I'm playing Half Life 2 Episode 1 and I'm just about to finish it and start playing Episode 2. Man how long does it take to make an expansion, i know Valve are trying to make it as good as possible but cmon its a expansion something to keep you busy while waiting for the "main"(lets call it that :carcus:) game. I'm still having a hard time understanding why they made left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2 making and didn't release Episode 3 but well if i could wait for Diablo 3 for so long then i can wait for Episode 3.

What's the rush? You're still playing Half Life 2: Episode 1. :badbone:

Anyway, I wouldn't hold your breath. Valve is on their own schedule, because they can afford to be, thanks to Steam (they take between 10-25% of all game sales on that system). They don't have the same deadlines and bankroll problems that traditional developers/publishers have, so they can spend as much time as they feel they need to develop the game they want.

That being said, it's a popularly held belief that Episode 3 will end up being Half Life 3, given the amount of time that it's taken to develop, and that we know virtually nothing about it, aside from two pieces of concept art.

To be honest this is my 5th playtrough(on Half Life 2 and its expacks) i think?

You are right about they are getting a lot of money from Steam, but you shouldn't play with gamers heart like that :judo:. I hope those rumors ain't true Episode 2 is(or felt) like a cliffhanger and

There's no doubt in my mind that whatever comes next in the Half Life saga will be a direct continuation of the events of HL2: Ep2. It's a matter of branding though. What if "Episode 3" runs on a new engine, and what if it's the length of a full game? May as well call that one Half-Life 3 at that point, right?

Yeah that would be nice but the feeling I've had since i bought the Orange Box is that at the end of the Episode 3 there would be some exploring on who or what the Gman really is and that instead of the Combine forces reaching Earth
Like the Reapers reaching Earth at the end of Mass Effect 2
you take the fight to them and you really get see their home dimension fighting trough different places meeting different kind of aliens. You know what would be nice as well that all the three Episodes on HL3 would be like a single missions and the last one you will find out something :carcus: but it would be nice if they put some key things ( about the story) in every part of the missions and not explain everything at the end.

I don't know maybe I'm expecting too much like when i played ME1 i was so happy playing a sci-fi action rpg and i wasn't that happy with ME2(good game though) but i learned one thing don't expect too much seems i quite didn't learned it yet.

I think that's a given. Episodes 1 and 2 were about Alyx and Gordon obtaining information on the Combine home world, so it's safe to assume that will be a key location in the future. Which is, ya know, awesome.

I have very high, broad hopes for Episode 3, but I'm sure that they'll be exceeded. Valve has yet to fail me.

Hmm, maybe I'll check this out. Ive been itching for something new, even though I should save money for all that is coming out in the next few months. As for Just Cause, I didnt really care for the first game and after playing the demo for the sequel, I think I'll stay clear of that series.

I got Bulletstorm for 20 dollars off the full price. Amazon was having a sale, I don't think I'd buy it for 60 bucks. But then again, I buy very few games for their full price. If you wait you can usually get some pretty good discounts. If you're looking for fun gameplay I'd recommend Bulletstorm. The story isn't bad, but it wasn't a motivator for me buying it. The skill-shot system is a lot of fun. It makes you feel bad for just shooting people normally when a dinky 10 score shows up. You're motivated to slide/whip and kick combo etc, and the more points you get, the more cool shit you can unlock. Boneduster quad barrel shotgun = gun porn. Though I don't want to recommend something you wouldn't like. The trailers are a pretty good indicator of how much you'll enjoy the game. If you like these, it's like this...but more.

You're right, there's a shit ton of great stuff coming out.

Speaking of, I need to go reserve a copy of Portal 2 for xbox. Don't hate me! :puck:

That's the single worst version of the game, you know. Remember how Valve/Microsoft treated the Orange Box? Or rather, didn't treat it at all?

Nu-uh haha. I never got the Orange box. Everything else I've played by Valve has been on PC. What was wrong with it? I'd rather kick back and play it on my TV. Unless they botch this version, for some reason.

First off, Valve contracted the Orange Box console port out to another company. That pretty much tells you how much Valve cares about consoles (at least in 2007, it did). But even beyond that little black eye, Valve and Microsoft have a long-going disagreement about how updated content should be managed. Valve wants to release it for free, and have a constant stream of new content. Microsoft wants to charge for this kind of content, and package it together in big chunks. Their disagreement over how Orange Box updates should be managed got to the point where Valve essentially said "fuck it." and stopped doing updates. Now, Team Fortress 2 has changed so much on PC that the vanilla 360 release would be unrecognizable by comparison.

For Portal, they released new levels and content for PC, but not consoles, and they've promised to do the same thing for Portal 2. That's the part you'd be missing out on. For the PS3 version this time around, Valve made a pact with Sony to bring content updates through a version of Steam set to operate on PSN. As an additional perk, a PC version of the game comes free with the purchase of a PS3 version of the game.

Yeah I heard about all those awesome perks the PS3 is getting. It's too bad I only have an Xbox, I would totally nab it for PS3. I think I'll initially buy it on Xbox and get it later on (and cheaper hopefully) for the PC so I don't miss out. Although it's interesting you say that, super meat boy for Xbox gets a lot of free updates in the form of free level packs. I wonder if they're just treating Valve in this manner, or if it's gotten any better. Another reason is that my I-mac isn't the fastest cat anymore, newer games make it chug a bit.

Also thought I'd mention anyone interested in getting Pokemon black/white - Amazon is having a sweet deal where you get $20 dollar credit for buying it. That's like two games for the price of one! :???:

EDIT: Sorry, I lied. You have to buy a DS to get the 20 discount.

So, my friends made me get Minecraft. It's a pretty fun time waster. Being a ::ahem:: super creative person, I keep having these aspirations of building gigantic golden castles and stuff.

Yesterday I was trying to build a sky castle and my whole plan got messed up because I build the base too close to the "ceiling." I had to knock down all my carefully placed sky planks. I gotta say it's fun/annoying having these zombies and creepers fuck up my shit all the time. So, I gotta build accordingly and stay protected.

Meh, it's something to do. I might get back to my renegade run of Mass Effect 1 & 2 soon, though. :troll:

Minecraft is pretty fun. I had the same problem, my amazing giant tree house trees wouldn't grow because they were so close to the ceiling. whoops. So I went on an epic quest to claim new land, and now I'm totally lost and haven't played since haha. Being creative is a must for enjoying the game. That's 90% of the content right there.

Duly noted. I would never want to appear un-hip on the SKnet forum. :slan:

I've heard that's a fantastic game. It got pretty great scores all around. Surely going to pick it up once my 3DS arrives.

Unfortunately I'm stuck playing the waiting game with games I can't play. Torture I tell you! I also want to mention that I appreciate a game that comes with a nice instruction booklet. B/W is full color and introduces all the characters and gameplay with cool art. Some recent games I've bought are dinky little black and white pamphlets crammed with boring text.

"Fantastic" may be overselling it a bit.

Hehe yeah, instruction booklets are always nice, although I have to admit I've never read one before playing a game. Still, I have fond memories of some classic ones like Zelda 3's or Secret of Mana's, not to mention the crazy stuff you got with some PC games back in the day.

The review I read gave it a 9.5 out of 10 or something. Though scores don't really matter, he gave it a lot of praise. I'll still pick it up though knowing that it's good.

I have to think for a minute every time I read "Zelda 3" Just because I'm not used to hearing it called that. I always hear Link to the Past. And heck yes, those were awesome. Gameboy/SNES games really got it right. Mario games are great too, especially Super mario world. It had cute little illustrations for everything he did, swimming, jumping, running etc. Hehe, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the swagger button nose link. http://zs.ffshrine.org/album/link-to-the-past/inst-us/z3manual-07-08.jpg

By the way, I'm a DS virgin. I have little to no idea of what's good on the system, so if anyone wants to recommend me some games I would be grateful. :azan: I was thinking about getting Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, but that's it.

There is so goddamn much...
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_DS
if I had to choose a sort of top 5 DS recommendations though...(not counting any obligatory Zelda/Mario)
1. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series(Ace Attorney, Trials and Tribulations, Justice for All, Apollo Justice, and Miles Edgeworth)
2. Hotel Dusk
3. Elite Beat Agents
4. Golden Sun series, 2 on GBA and 1 on DS(since I think you said you haven't played a Nintendo portable since GBC?)
5. The World Ends with You
Well... these are just random ones off the top of my head really. Just try some!
Edit: Oh, and Professor Layton.

Nice Austin Powers chest hair, Aphasia!

These are my favorite DS games so far:

Hotel Dusk
Bangai-O Spirits
Infinite Space
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Dragon Quest V

There's a bunch I still wanna play. Thinking of giving the new Pokemon a try when it's a little cheaper around here.

Not bad, but not as good as it should be. Here's what else you should get in order of importance:

1) INFINITE SPACE
2) Castlevania (Dawn of Souls and/or Order of Ecclesia)
3) Phoenix Wright (1, 2, 3), Kirby Canvas Curse, DQ: Rocket Slime, Mario vs Donkey Kong 2

There's loads more, but those are quite amazing and NDS exclusive (the PW games are ports from the GBA but I doubt you've played them). Of course there's also ports and remakes that I'd heartily recommend, but you might have played them already. Let me still cite among them: Front Mission, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario 64, Disgaea. Can't go wrong with these. Then you've got puzzle games, like Tetris, Picross & Picross 3D, Meteos, and the popular Layton series.

I was just browsing through your Infinite Space thread. If you hadn't put it at #1 I wouldn't have had any idea you liked the game. :troll:

Just reading through the thread makes it sound fun. I love games that toss you into another world and tell you "Okay, get used to it, you're in OUR world now" It adds so much to the immersion.
I will definitely be adding a few of the titles you mentioned to my library at some point. Most assuredly Infinite Space and Layton. And Chrono Trigger too, I want to see what all the buzz is about that.

The nice thing about getting a DS so late is that all these games are like 10-20 bucks.

Edit: Does anyone have any experience with DSI downloadable games? Is there anything worth mentioning? One thing I was going to check into was Shantae: Risky's Revenge

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Just let me tell you that I think so highly of this game that I bought it a while ago even though I don't own a DS yet (only 2 days to go! I can't wait!)
