New Berserk animation project confirmed

I always tend to think modern anime is ugly as fuck in comparison to the 90s stuff, so maybe there's something wrong with my brains, but this has been no exception so far. I'm not that bothered by the CGI even if it looks a little rough, but compare the colors in the images Griff posted. Can't help but feel the 97 anime looks much, much prettier.

I probably agree with you more than most, Eluvei, and see the pros and cons of both styles (always comes down to $$$ either way). On the plus side, you won't see this armor in the old anime:

Hell, the armor Guts wears after leaving the Falcons is one of my favorites.

I definitely agree, sometimes I miss that old school style of anime art. Ninja Scroll and Street Fighter II, man... the art and animation in those films were fantastic. There's definitely nostalgia when watching those films. However, in my opinion, in the case of the '97 anime... I do think the art style was nice. Low budget, but nice. However, except for a few scenes where you can tell they really up'ed the production values on, the animation was realllly choppy and lots of cheating going around. I thought some of the best animated scenes from the '97 series was the Zodd fight, the 100 man fight, the second Guts/Griffith duel, and the last 2 episodes (OH, and the Black Swordsman episode of course :slan:). Everything else... was reallly pretty damn messy and rigid, and I think THIS is where the new anime will totally trump the '97 anime.

When comparing to the new anime, I see so much more fluidity and vast environments. And I guess, lucky for me, my eye for CG isn't as particular as some of the other members here, but I think the CG looks pretty sweet. The motion and the smoothness of everything is what I like. Lots of dynamic shots! Lots of epicness. I can't even begin to imagine how awesome all the fight scenes will be with all the random Apostles and demons Guts will face in later story arcs.

As far as character design, yes, that picture of Guts/Griffith chatting it up... not one of Guts finer moments. But from the other scenes, like the ones below, I think Guts and Casca look totally up to par.

Anyways, so far, judging just from the trailer of course, I'm diggin what Studio 4C has done so far, and I'm thinking I'm going to prefer this one over the '97 anime by quite a lot. Unless Susumu is a no go. Then, well, I'll have to rethink things again =).

Dude, how could you not mention the Black Swordsman episode? Probably the best animation in the series! :daiba:

Never liked its character design much personally. Not that the new one's much better, but I don't find it much worse either.

That's how you can easily see that some of the footage differs from the rest. Check out Guts' face:

Visually there's no doubt to me that this new animation will completely trump the old TV series. And that's perfectly normal. About Hirasawa though... Don't you guys say I didn't warn you.

Awwww yeah! :zodd: Thanks for spotting that! Guess he won't be stuck in the same armor the entire Golden Age afterall.

I would love it if Hirasawa returned to score Berserk once more, but I'm fine with someone else taking the reigns, as long as it's good music. If it's not Susumu, I would love it if the person doing the music would go a more classical direction and create a huge, sweeping score.

look terrible to anyone else? It looks like an in-game cut scene from a video game.

I have been having serious doubts about the upcoming Berserk movie since the release of that Newtype promo poster of the Band of the Hawk several months ago, which upon closer look revealed just how lumpy and skewed the characters' faces were made out to be, and Casca's in particular. But even then, I chose not to comment about it, because I was hoping that this was just a "prototype" test footage, and that the final product would be superior. Oh boy, was I wrong. This is the reason why I stay away from modern CGI cartoons in general. It would have been truly ideal had the Studio 4°C made the new Berserk OVA employing the same Oriental Light and Magic production and animation staff and the same animation style from the 1997 TV series. But unfortunately it ain't gonna be so, as that company has chosen to sacrifice animation quality and integrity for cheap CGI graphics.

The original series did a really good job on Gut's face in every scene, and it's a hard face to draw. Somehow they got it right. Hopefully studio 4C does the same. More animation checkers, damn it!

Anyway enough bitching out of me. I'll make my final judgement when it's released.

to all who says that the quality sucks please look the trailer once again, everything looks OK when in motion

p.s. Man I feel by the time movie will be released, this thread would probably be 150 pages long :ganishka:

Yeah.. if you watch stills of the trailer then you lose the illusion of top-notch animation.

A man after my own heart, that's the uncompromising attitude I like on Bastille Day! :azan:

This is a bridge too far though, the original anime has some good points, but it's certainly not some paragon they should follow. If anything they should try to be as different, and better, as possible because it's quite doable. Anyway, the CGI weirdness isn't so much worse than some of the gross pseudo-animation issues last time around, as Aaz and DK have pointed out. Obviously, I wish there were no room for debate so it wasn't a matter of picking your poison, but it comes down to personal preference.

I was just telling Aaz our goal should be to surpass the youtube thread. :SK:

That's why it's good thing we're not going to be watching the movie at 1 fps. That illusion is the point of animation, right?

Seeing as how these movies are to be released in theaters one would think that some of the animation complaints would be worked out by then, after all a lot of people are going to be seeing this on the big screen and sloppiness shows much more easily. Perhaps we can just tell ourselves this is mostly (if not all) test footage. I know I'd probably sleep a little better. =)

I bet by the same time next year, SK.net will have doubled the registered users.

I'd bet that a lot of them will go as fast they come too, this isn't exactly the place for the casual fan or anime exclusive fan (same diff?) really... The ones who stick around will hopefully start picking up the manga. :puck:

According to the film Twitter, the site, www.berserkfilm.com , should be up any moment. She said 10 AM ... so ... any minute, hopefully.

It's up. I'm having an awful time with the "introduction," I cannot understand a word of the google translation. haha...

What's interesting is... Miura drew more than one picture of the Twitter mascot!

What is the "members" area? Is it just a "subscribe to our twitter" page? Hmm..

Well, I like the backgrounds they're using.

Is it just me or is the official website loading slow like it's being bombarded by hits? :ubik:

Also Deci, yes, we casual fans may come on go as far as posting in the forums goes, but that doesn't mean we wont continue to read every word you guys type just as we have for years before.

This is sorta reminding me of the Hellsing Ultimate Ova's. They used CG for all the weapons/vehicles and the like which I found OK due to the fact it was done occasionally and was never really a huge focus for too long. Now in the OVA 8 coming out this month there are scenes (when Alucard summons his ghouls) where the entire armies of ghouls are just a giant CG mass. Again I don't really mind that much since it's only for a small segment and it looks to be done fairly well. Just the fact that we are getting pretty much every piece of metal CG'd...

I don't know, the trailer looked pretty good but one thing that stood out was how beautiful the castle scene looked from a distance and hand drawn, then when they zoom in on the battlefield everything looks very plain and CG, not fun! The CG blood splatter thing also didn't look that great to me when Guts swung his sword.

Yep. Ewok grabbed the original Flash .flv file allowing me to screen capture it at high resolution. It's MUUUUUCH more pretty, and several more details are evident. Here's the best of the best screens:
