WIP - Ehren's Casca kit

Aphasia

ALL MYSTERIES MUST BE SOLVED
This is awesome...Very cool to watch you go through the process, thanks for posting all the pictures along the way! I can't wait to see this beauty finished. Just curious, are you going to do anymore shading to the face? Are you planning on keeping Casca that dark? She seems several shades too dark, if you're going for accuracy. Well, here. I did a some quick tweaks to show you what I mean.

Aside from that the values and finish look fantastic, especially the metal work.

Thanks for pointing this out!
IRL, she's quite a few nuances lighter, but yeah .. she turned out way too dark.

Also, I apparently made her eyes too big + I didn't quite like the way they turned out, so...
I basically stripped her of all the paint and resculpted the eyes area, her nose + tweaked her mouth to a more smirkish expression.
Adding to that, I lowered her right eyebrow + lifted her left ditto.
The new colour is way more accurate to Miura's paintings.

And here's the sword in all its' Glory:

The sword; .925 Sterling Silver with gilded Gold detail and oxided cross guard.
Made by my wonder smith Sarah. ♥

I finally decided on the base.
It's basically from directly after her dismount at the Castle of Doldrey.

The pole to the left is part of the courtyard bridge; which you see in this pic:

The base is more or less done.
The sand will have to set so I can add dry pastels + the chine hoops will probably be weathered down and rusted.

The barrel was made the traditional way from cedar veneer which was painted, sanded and burnt.
The chine hoops were made from soldering lead which was hammered to appropriate thickness and then "soldered" together.
You can barely see it through the cracks in these shots, but there is actually grain in the barrel.

*** added progress 2011-01-03***

Nearing the end of the road...
The chine hoops were rusted down and I added some rusty nails and a bit extra twine to the pole which was muted using analogous tones of green, blue and burnt umber.
The whole base then received a healthy amount of dry pastels.

Ok, so this turned out way better than expected!
I knew I was going to add acrylic doll's eyes, but the eye lashes were sort of a gamble, and Man do they Rock!!!! :D
Now just to wait for the green eyes to arrive ...

Casca's eyes are dark brown, just so you know. Even putting aside all of Miura's color illustrations, Guts comments on it when they first meet: "...黒い瞳..." Not the kind of thing I'd take liberties with, although obviously it's up to you.

Fantastic Job with the face re-paint and sculpt. A major improvement, thanks for taking my critique gracefully! She is looking beautiful, and wow...That base is gorgeous. Very inspiring work.

Although I do agree with Aaz, a darker eye color will yield a closer resemblance to Casca. If the green is subtle I could see it working, though. I can't wait to see her all put together with her hair and helmet...Wow! : ) You could probably make mad bank if you dropped this on ebay - but I wouldn't do it in 216 years. Har-har.

May I ask how you engraved the letters into the wood? A wood-burner?

PS: Thanks for all the great photos. Keep them coming!

In the translations I've read, both manga and anime the line (as I don't read Japanese) goes "Dark eyes", not implicating any specific colour.
I've always viewed her eye colour as green, and the acrylic ones are pretty dark.
My choice of course as I build this kit for myself, not some hardcore fanboy who'd kill over it...

That's what it means, "dark" or "black", like in "Black Swordsman". It doesn't refer to green; they're brown.

Yeah yeah, just figured someone who cared enough to recreate a coherent background from the story and have it made the fancy way might also care to get the character's details right.

Are green eyes regarded as dark, generally?

Hardcore fanboy? So, not the kind of fanboy that paints dolls. The other kind of fanboy. Got it. :void:

Obviously, if you want your project to be inaccurate even after investing so much time, that's your prerogative. But this is hardly the place to throw around the F-Word.

PS: Fanboy. Not fuck.

Hahahah, that made me lol.

Well, I think green eyes can be regarded as dark. But that's more of a hazel, which blends brown and green. It really depends on the brand of acrylic eyes - It could be a dark enough shade to look accurate. The darker you get the harder it is pick up subtle hints of color.

Ok let me stop this right away: her eyes are brown. In my post above I started with "even putting aside all of Miura's color illustrations" for a reason: he gives her brown eyes (and for reference, in the context of the sentence in Japanese I don't think "黒い瞳" can refer to green eyes). End of the story. There's no arguing to be done about it, so let's not uselessly derail Joa's thread.

After ALL this time of waiting for the eyes... Dissappointment.
I would NOT call these green .. they are more of a cross between hazel and purple (!!!!).

After the initial rage I tried them on her though, and the result was so nice I decided to go with these either way:

**edit 2011-01-11: new pics

"Hellooo, tough guy..."

..she seemed to think.

Now for the standard one week quarantine and then final touchups.

I used both a wood burner and my dremel along with our cooking torch.
The result is a quite weathered, antiqued look.

That is some INTENSE SHIZ!!! It looks fantastic Joa. The lashes add a nice touch. I wish I could see this in person!!! (so I can steal it)

Very nice close up with the face. I really like it. Without getting into the eye color discussion.. since you got the wrong one is it too late for you to tell them about it and return/swap them out for the ones you wanted? Seems like you're sticking with it and want this project done though! heh, awesome job either way. :casca:
