Wow, under his armor Guts bears even a stronger resemblance to a dog. This black oil-like substance makes Guts' hair look like canine fur, making him so Zetman (or apostle-form Irvine) :ubik:

Well, it looks like Guts' "Beastman" mode was easily reproduced. The Beast said the first time was a one time fluke, so I wonder what perspective it'll have on the situation now...and if Schierke can extricate herself and restore Guts without incident.

Although the imagery with the ocean effects is bright, I doubt the ship would be left alone without any challenges to Farnese's spell.  But if it does prove to be the merrows, what better escort to Elfhelm?  :carcus:

You think the merrows are still going to be around 8 volumes from now? :guts:

You think the ship and any of it's crew will still be around after the Sea God is unleashed?  :troll:

Btw, does anyone think the Sea God will have some form of communication with Guts or Schierke possibly? Like actual dialog. I feel like any conversation with the Sea God could lead to some really insightful info, if it speaks of course.

The Sea God, in a way, has been communicating through its tentacles, the transformed humans. But, unfortunately, so far we've just gotten, "JOOOIN USSS..."

I do. I think it would be anticlimactic if this powerful, dangerous, evil creature that's received so much buildup over the recent episodes didn't make any kind of contact with Guts and Schierke.

Yeah but that's a little different. Those humans weren't complete drones, and retained their own memories and personalities. So we can't really say the Sea God has had any genuine communication with the cast yet.

What I want to know is if the bloodletting by Guts will serve as offerings for the Sea God's "rebirth ceremony" (which is referenced here and here). If it is, that's kind of like ... cheating, right?

I have always had a fascination with sea monsters. :guts:
I would always have dreams/nightmares about me swimming in the dark with a flash light down in the abyss off the ocean,
only for me to find a larger than life sea serpent or ocean monster thing, very much like this. scares the crap out of me! :magni:

but I love staring at pictures of them on google (Leviathan is my favorite), wondering what it would be like for something like this to exists :o
(also, i think that the first boss in God of War 1 is the coolest thing ever :ubik:)

So I hope the sea god is pretty crazy looking too. i hope it does have a body under the 'head' and not just tentacles.

hope Miura delivers with the under water shots. seeing as how Guts can't really fight under water, im sure Miura will show us more of down below with the merrows :guts:

I'm guessing that the Merrows will help fight off whatever attacks the boat (no way it's not attacked). Anyone else think this could lead to the beginnings of some kind of alliance between man and non-or-less evil fantasy creatures against the bad guys?

the most intriguing aspect of the episode for me was definitely the shot of Guts' brand. I immediately thought apostle, but then considered the possibility that this sea god could be a god hand member (ie Conrad). The more I think about it, the less likely this scenario seems plausible. However, it is, as of now, only god hand members that have made the Brand  bleed so badly since the seal was placed on Guts' neck. right?

It's not going to be a God Hand member. The brand doesn't just react to God Hand and apostles. It reacts to evil, like it's doing here. The sea god is a very evil being.

I think you're right that the brand hasn't bled this much since Guts encountered a member of the God Hand.  This is going to be one of the more evil beings Guts has encountered, excluding of course God Hand.

The sea god is a very evil being.

And immeasurably powerful too, judging from the amount of blood that was gushing from Guts' brand. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sea God's strength rivals that of the individual members' of the God Hand. Both Femto and Skull Knight have remarked on how the brand will react to an encounter with a supernatural being depends on how powerful it is, with the reactions ranging from a slight sting caused by the weak forest spirits at night to an extremely painful hemorrhage resulting from getting too near to a member of the God Hand.

While I have no doubt that the sea God is one of the most powerfull entities we've seen, I don't think it can rival a member of the God Hand. And while Guts brand is certainly bleeding a lot given how far away he still is, I'm not sure if we can directly compare this to say his encounter with Femto back when he fought the Count. He did comment on his brand acting weird after the merging.

I'm more curious to see how the Sea God compares to giant Ganishka, if that comparison makes sense once we see just what it really is.

No way is the Sea God on the same level as a member of the God Hand. I doubt very much that the Sea God is capable of manipulating matter like Femto did a volume ago, for example. I can see its strength rivaling that of an apostle, with Ganishka after his second reincarnation being the exception.

Yeah, let's not set our expectations TOO high by comparing the Sea God to a member of the God Hand. To keep things in perspective, remember that Schierke said the Kundalini that Daiba harnessed was powerful enough that it could be seen as a "god" to polytheistic cultures, and it was just an itty bitty snake with a water gun :iva:

Although the imagery with the ocean effects is bright, I doubt the ship would be left alone without any challenges to Farnese's spell.

I think if anything attacks them, it'll be the pirate ship. While Farnese' spell should be able to repel spiritual creatures, the fact the tentacles themselves are former humans who were transformed after death might allow them to withstand the spell, like the Pishacha on the beach in volume 28.

What I want to know is if the bloodletting by Guts will serve as offerings for the Sea God's "rebirth ceremony" (which is referenced here and here). If it is, that's kind of like ... cheating, right?

Like I said before, the fact no "ceremony" (the necessity of which has not been assessed) took place is a great thing as far as the group is concerned. As strong as Guts is, fighting the Sea God in a diminished state might already prove to be a great ordeal for him, and fighting it if it were at its best could even be plain impossible.

I'm more curious to see how the Sea God compares to giant Ganishka, if that comparison makes sense once we see just what it really is.

I don't think it makes more or less sense than to compare it to a member of the God Hand at this point. All we know is that it's a really strong being.

No way is the Sea God on the same level as a member of the God Hand. I doubt very much that the Sea God is capable of manipulating matter like Femto did a volume ago, for example. I can see its strength rivaling that of an apostle, with Ganishka after his second reincarnation being the exception.

No way, you really think the Sea God is as powerful as an apostle? Will Guts be able to survive this encounter?! :isidro:

Yeah, let's not set our expectations TOO high by comparing the Sea God to a member of the God Hand. To keep things in perspective, remember that Schierke said the Kundalini that Daiba harnessed was powerful enough that it could be seen as a "god" to polytheistic cultures, and it was just an itty bitty snake with a water gun :iva:

Your gross underestimation of the Kundalini doesn't do your argument any favor. :puck: I'd like to remind you that it's easily one of the strongest opponents Guts ever fought, and that it took a risky combined attack between Guts, Schierke and Serpico to kill it. So if the Sea God is a big step-up from that, I think we ought to set our expectations pretty high.

Hey, I didn't know you could speak Welsh  :guts:

But still, it would be great if Miura would use the Sea God to pay a tribute to H.P Lovecraft. Since 4/5 of God Hand have names that are derived after sci-fi/horror writers and novels, don't you guys think that it would be fitting if the man who was the master and innovator of those literary genres at long last himself got a little shout-out in Berserk?

I'd say the theme of the isolated fishing village with its monstrous inhabitants worshipping an ancient, malevolent god is already more than enough of a tribute without the Sea God being Cthulhu incarnate. Not to mention that the idol does fit the bill when it comes to its "pulpy, tentacled head". Which isn't to say that there won't be more, but I think you should be satisfied as it is.

And on a side note, I wouldn't lump the Sci-Fi and horror genres together. A tribute to Lovecraft has everything to do with the ambiance of his stories befitting Berserk's current events and nothing to do with the novels Ubik or Slan.

Oh, shaddup. :iva: I suppose it is a little silly to start comparing so-and-so's power to so-and-so. Like you said, all we know is the Sea God is an incredibly powerful, malevolent being. Beyond that, we'll just have to see how Guts handles the situation.

I think Schierke might be sent back to her body if something serious happens, like when Ganishka zapped Guts. It also seems to me that the ship will be attacked, specifically when reading Ivalera and Schierke's lines. Then Schierke can't come back to her body since it's in danger?!
