Path of Exile - An Alternate Diablo Sequel

While looking for Diablo 3 interviews, I came across some videos for an upcoming game called Path of Exile:

When I look at the graphics engine, I think 'this looks like a worthy successor to Diablo 1 (in terms of appearance)'. The trailer definitely gets its horror theme across much more effectively than Diablo's wizard trailer. I love how smooth and detailed the animations are as well.

The beta for the game will begin later this year.

I have no idea how this game will turn out. I don't know if difficulty will be handled appropriately, if its means of generating revenue is viable, or if it will be able to keep from crashing. I could imagine Path of Exile becoming as big as Mass Effect or floundering tragically with equal likelihood at this point.

Free, hmm. And it might even run on my shitty laptop. I'll look into it when I have time, it's definitely like a slightly better graphics Diablo II. Which I certainly don't mind. The question for me will come down to how interesting the gameplay is and how customizable the characters.

Personally though, I'd prefer Vindictus, unfortunately it doesn't run on my shit gear. :judo:

Just compare the two and it's self explanatory.

There are so many modern dungeon crawlers. Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, and Torchlight 2. They all just so happen to be in either development or in a closed beta you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of accessing.

But there's good news. For this weekend, Path of Exile will open its servers to the general public: no lottery, no fan site sweepstakes, or Facebook and Twitter spamming required.

I've actually been playing this beta off and on for a while now - since September last year. The developers are really active and are constantly doing updates and tweaks and providing feedback + youtube videos of their thoughts. I really enjoy that part of it.

Basically, I wanted to play a Diablo game and was tired of waiting for D3. The skills and abilities basically are similar to the Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 systems.

In order to get any abilities you have to get gems than slot them in your weapons/armor. You have support gems and slots that link to each other on your armor - you can get different items to add more slot/remove slots, etc. Your gems level up and get stronger, etc. Pretty much like FF7.

Then when your character levels you have a huge grid to choose from to go whichever path you want. It's only one grid that everyone class uses but you start off at different places. Here is an example of one of my builds. So, again similar to FF10.

I feel bad as this has been in Beta since August and just releasing around the time D3 is coming out. I think it would have been better if it was much sooner so people that wanted to get their fix early could play it as D3 is just going to be so huge.

I haven't been following D3 as much as I would rather be surprised at all the new stuff. But I really like this system and game plus for health potions they use something like Flasks from Dark Souls - where you get better ones and upgrade them. So, you don't have to keep finding potions and filling your inventory with them. Instead, you find ones that heal you better and every time you kill an enemy it recharges! The more you kill efficiently the more your health pots refill!

I just played up through the majority of Act 2 on normal. This game is awesome! It's not perfect, but hopefully its issues will be resolved before release. If you liked Diablo 2 then you will love this game. There's still 14 hours to go for the stress test; go on and try it if you haven't. I'm not too worried about the game being eclipsed by Diablo 3. For one D3 hype won't last forever. This game is also free to play (but thankfully not pay to win), has a more realistic art style/well crafted dark fantasy tone, and a greater possibility for you to get screwed if you made bad decisions early on. I think there is more than enough room for both of these games.

New trailer is up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OWbXdDpyarA#!

Looking like a modern, polished Titan Quest with a Diablo vibe. Still, not sure my appetite is there yet for another one of these things.

Looks more interesting than Diablo 3 to me (not hard), but yeah not enough to make me buy it.
