Massive 8.9 quake, tsunamis hit Japan

My first thought, besides "wow" of course, was, "I hope Miura's okay." :schierke:

Seems that was as silly in more ways than one though, as they're not talking about deaths yet; so far so good then when they're discussing it in terms of homes without power rather than homes and people destroyed. Helps when you have a modern infrastructure so you don't get flattened like when these quakes hit developing countries.

Indeed. It was also not too hard on the capital apparently, so hopefully the most trouble Miura got is a wobbly line on his sketch pad.

The earthquake was as strong as the one than hit Indonesia. However, the casualties aren't in the same order of magnitude. That's because Japanese people prepare everything in case of an earthquake:education, buildings... I hope this disaster will leave the least possible damage in Japan.

Ryan McGuinness on the Hawaiian island of Maui tells CNN that he is standing about 10ft away from the shore. He says there have been surges, during which the sea has advanced about 20ft further inland than normal. But now, he says, the sea level has receded about 200ft, exposing reefs and rocks which are normally always covered. People are calm, he adds, but they are now moving to higher ground.
This is good news since I have a friend living near the shore on Waikiki Beach. I have another friend down in LA about 10 minute from the beach, but if it is not affecting Hawaii too badly then I guess he should be fine. Hope any Skullknighters in any of the affected areas are doing alright.

On a lighter note, it would be cool to see the shoreline receding like that. :schnoz:

According to CNN the water recedes from the beach before the waves start hitting.

TOKYO -- A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.

Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii and warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast. In Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant in the northeast was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed.

Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture (state) closest to the quake's epicenter. Another 88 were confirmed killed and at least 349 were missing. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the disaster.

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0.

Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of the flames being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said.

"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

What actually made things much worse was:
Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions because of the tsunami that crashed ashore, swallowing everything in its path as it surged several miles (kilometers) inland before retreating. The apocalyptic images of surging water and uncontrolled conflagrations broadcast by Japanese TV networks resembled scenes from a Hollywood disaster movie.

Some good news out of all this, for the most part the tsunamis that went out into the Pacific seem to be doing no damage to the surrounding areas, but it actually could get much worse later on.

The situation with the Fukushima power plants is worrying.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan warned there could be a small radiation leak from a nuclear reactor whose cooling system was knocked out by Friday's massive earthquake, but thousands of residents in the area had already been moved out of harm's way.

Power company TEPCO says it has lost the ability to control reactor pressure at Fukushima No. 1 and No.2 reactors. A spokesman said pressure is stable inside the reactors but is rising in the containment vessels. He said it is not known if there will be a need to release pressure at the plant at this point. That would involve a release of radiation.

Unfortunately it's not that "common".
The actual common response to a receding shoreline is to investigate and check out the cool exposed sealife.

I'm glad the death toll isn't any higher. It could have been far worse. History has proven that much.

Things could still get pretty bad. I refer you to what I posted above about the Fukushima plants. They're about to release pressure from a reactor, meaning radiation in the atmosphere.

Since you posted about the otaku, here are some lists of anime/manga/game industry people who have been confirmed to be okay. Aaz already mentioned Miura, but I'm not sure if he would even need to be listed here. Just to confirm though, he doesn't live in an affected area does he?

Yeah I read that, it's a problem but it's hard to tell how serious it really is until more information is released. I haven't read that there has been a core meltdown so it's still contained. I've also read that the US army is supplying Coolant, which is what they need.

Ignorance, sure. If you don't live in an area where there is weather or natural disasters like this, you would be less likely to know. However, it doesn't make you stupid.

The people that live around these danger zones are usually aware of them. They're just too stupid to move out of the way. Like the current inhabitants around Turtle Mountain. Another rockface is going to come crashing down like during the Frank Slide. But because they say their homes are too nice, they don't want to leave. Of course, if there's one thing to wake people up to reality it's the sight of a rock face about to use you as a cushion to break it's fall. Or even better, the 150,000 people that are living by Mt Rainer, knowing full well that they're in designated Lahar and pyroclastic flow zones.

That was a mistake on Clinton's part. The only coolant used in these power plants is water and the US didn't deliver any; the Japanese are doing that themselves. It's batteries to power the cooling pumps that the army delivered.

The massive earthquake that struck the Tohoku region on March 11 was caused by several quake focal areas moving simultaneously, producing an intensity that would occur only once in 1,000 years, say experts.
The millennium quake.

These so called experts should stfu. A recurrence interval does not mean that an Earthquake of equal or similar magnitude cannot happen again for another thousand years. it's the average. Just like how if there was an Earthquake every year for nine years of a certain magnitude, then there was no Earthquake for 10,000 years, it would also have a recurrence interval of around 1000 years. It wouldn't prevent those 9 back to back Earthquakes though. There are no guarantees with averages. and recurrence intervals, especially for geological activities have proven to be quite inacurate. the Cascadia subduction zone isn't going to hit it's next interval for another 200 or so years. Yet it's showing signs that it could generate an Earthquake of M9+ within the next 50 years. I suppose I have no need to say how fucked the Pacific region would be if that happened.

Re: Japanese 8.9 earthquake thread

Lesser earthquakes have been occurring since the big one. Can't be sure it's completely over yet. Current estimates place the number of dead or missing people at over 1,800, but lots of people are still unreachable in various parts of the country.

The radiation level in Fukushima has apparently been decreasing, however a 3rd reactor had a cooling failure and they're preparing to release steam to alleviate pressure in the core (meaning a release of radiation in the atmosphere). So far around 140,000 people were evacuated from the area, and about 160 were exposed to radiation.

Re: Japanese 8.9 earthquake thread

Howdy folks... there are a lot more people reported dead/missing. A small coastal town has half its residents missing... around 9,500 of them. The thing for Japan though is that their early warning system really paid off since mostly everyone was prepared. Had they had no early prediction, it would have been a lot worse.

This is funny in a sad way but didnt the republicans pass a bill to cut funding to the system that gave the US its warning about the tsunami?
