ADD/ADHD

So like, long story short... I went to see a psychiatrist today and among other things she said I have a pretty severe case of ADD. This came from way out of left field, as I'm in my mid twenties and have been tested for that before as a child. I never really figured I fell into that category. I've been doing research and talking to people all day and unfortunately I am only more confused as to whats really going on... So, perhaps any of you who have been diagnosed with either affliction could help shed some light? Do any of you have it?

Re: ADD/ ADHD

I'm willing to bet that more than half the population in this world has some sort of ADD. Either way, I have ADHD and I use no medication nor treatment but I know it's a matter of discipline and will to counter it. With that said, if you were diagnosed... Your psychiatrist should have given you options or referrals. If not? Then something is wrong.

Re: ADD/ ADHD

I know what you mean. I know plenty of people with ADHD and if i have something...its nothing like that... I kinda just wanted to talk to someone around my age (20s-30s) whose got only ADD :isidro: and WoRD dude, its dope?!?

Nomad- What do you mean by "options or refferals"? I'm aware of what the two are, just not what type she'd provide to me? Referrals for what? Options for different types of treatment options?

Re: ADD/ ADHD

I'm sure that you have your hands full with this recent news, but I think it's very important to get a second opinion too if you could. I don't have ADD or ADHD (to the best of my knowledge), but having been in and out of psychiatrist and psychologist offices throughout most of my life (I'm also in mid-twenties), I can tell you that it's worth your time to scope out different offices to get different opinions on the matter. It took me until I was in my twenties to find a psychiatrist/psychologist that actually made sense to me and could give me the advice I needed. Might have went slightly off-topic, and I'm not sure if any of what I just typed helps at all, but regardless I wish you luck with this. It's tough to find out something like this about yourself.

Re: ADD/ ADHD

That makes a lot of sense dude. I'm waiting on a call back from a second office.. shits madness. i'm not sure if she john edwards'd me and took advantage of me being somewhat unstable at the moment, or if shes right. she ignored some of what i said and refused to give me sleeping medication (even though ive been on it for almost a decade and have been having a horrific bout of insomnia as of late) so it all kinda rubbed me oddly. Thanks!

If you were diagnosed with "severe ADD" than I see no reason why medication wasn't mentioned or referrals towards treatment. I'm not saying he or she should offer, but in severe cases it_is their duty to give you a table of options to choose from. Not just "diagnose" and make sure you pay your co-pay.

Re: ADD/ ADHD

If a professional tells you you have ADHD and suggests you get on medication, make sure you're thoroughly evaluated before you make the move. The stuff they give you can really fuck you up if you don't seriously need it. I mean the *bad* kind of "fuck you up," like land you in a hospital. It happened to my brother.

When I was a kid I was diagnosed with ADD and recommended for medication, but it was kind of the diagnosis du jour at the time and the drug side effects sounded worse than the supposed problem, so my mom gave them the big N.O., for which I'm grateful. I didn't even know about this until she randomly told me as an adult when some ADD commercial or PSA came on TV, so I guess it really wasn't a problem before or since.

I have a close friend who was diagnosed during his childhood. He took a whole bunch of medication for it. Apparently the stuff is really bad for you, he seems to think it left him with some serious psychological problems. He's mostly recovered from it now. It definitely sounds like your mom made the right decision.

So yeah, just be careful and research the meds you're taking if you decide to go that route.

My dad did the same thing, Griffith. I was having some trouble in school during 6th grade and the counselor said i may have ADD and recommended I take some meds and my dad just told him NO to his face and walked out. That episode of South Park with the kids being treated for ADD comes to mind because of this thread. I'm glad I didn't end up having to see pink Christina Aguilera bugs.

I would definitely look into it some more and get other opinions. One of my little brothers was misdiagnosed for YEARS with ADHD. They had him on medication that made him feel miserable and not better. My mom ended up taking him to a specialist who then did a lot of tests and told her he never had ADHD he was just very high energy, and had allergies to certain dyes in food. I guess the dyes can set something off that resembles ADHD. I think the red dye is commonly put into red meat. I don't anymore than that, it was a long time ago know.

So I went to a testing center for a larger specific test and I do have adult ADD, while its not "severe" since I've managed to "cope" with it very well my entire life. I went for a second opinion as for treatment options and she said that we should focus on taking care of other, more pressing issues (which catalyze the ADD). I feel much better about this plan and maybe after all is said and done I wont even need medicine to help. Although i wouldnt turn the option down if itd help.

thanks for the input friends!

My brother who is 26 now has ADHD. He was born three month premature and when he was young my parents noticed that he was different then my other brother. When they had brought him to get checked out the doctors had said he had ADHD but they wouldn't know exactly how bad it was until he was older so that they could test him. When they finally tested him they found out that he had severe ADHD. They had put him on Ritalin but after a while they had found that he had difficulty gaining weight and then after a while that it was just not having the effects as it once did. So they changed it to Adderall which he still takes now.

I can tell you for a fact that growing up with someone that has ADHD (also mild MR) but also working with kids that have many mental disorders including ADD, you can normally tell the difference between someone that is MISDIAGNOSED and someone that really does have it. Unfortunately, in schools today people are quick to throw a disorder at a child then looking at the larger picture. Most children do have very little attention spans, any parent or person that works with kids will know this. But kids that have ADD or ADHD also have no control over their moods and when not on medication will not stay on a given topic for long. Still today at 26 if my brother forgets his meds he will be continuously going up and downstairs, going from one activity to another, asking random questions, saying your name thousands of times until you tell him to stop. I have found that most kids that are misdiagnosed are just kids that want attention and know that if they act up they will get the attention they desire.

Adults being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD is a lot simpler since as adults we can take a test like the ones they give and answer truthfully but we can also state our desires verbally. So if you have been diagnosed with ADD it's nothing bad it just takes more willpower to stay on topic or concentrate. Counseling helps a lot as well. They can normally tell if there is something that is in your life that is causing the attention to drift off into other directions. The meds can help but if you are against it then I would say do the counseling, my brother has tried it but he would never talk so he has to stay on the meds. I wish you a lot of luck!
