Batman: Arkham City

I understand what you are saying, but those gameplay videos are not a very good example of the overall experience. I would at least play the game before saying too much. Of course I myself haven't played it yet either.
The game is dark. Both figuratively and literally. Again maybe you just have to play it but they have really succeeded in setting the mood of a dark Batman game.

True, I have not played the game, only seen videos so ofc it might be darker lit/more moody than the videos present it to be.

Honestly dude that sounds more generic and "gamie" than what we got. I for one am glad they didn't throw in pedestrians and such. It's refreshing at this point.
Well what movies are you talking about? This game is much more a sequel in spirit to the animated series than anything else (fans will enjoy the returning VA's :guts:). Also he's Batman, he fights crime and crime bosses (and there are a ton of them in this game). I don't really think changing that would benefit anybody.
Not to mention the Catwomen tie-ins will be changing it up a bit.

I can't see how it is refreshing to take immersion away from the game (citizens, Gotham City etc..), it's the exact opposite of generic to be able to play more of Batman's life than just knocking out grunts/boss battles. If you watch the animated series and the "good" movies/comics then there are a lot more to Batman than what we are getting in Arkham City.

One thing that is cool is the voice acting, it appears to again be top notch. Thanks Mark Hamill :D

I've played all the past Spiderman games too and while I do think they are far better than most people give them credit for they don't compare very well to the new Arkham games. Gamelplay, graphics, mood...whatever. And the new one looks like a joke. The futuristic time travel thing? yea no.

No not that future Spiderman crap, there is a new trailer out for a new spidy game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsT9xxTU2r8

Anyway, leave the Batman sandbox game for another time, and don't penalize Arkham City for not being it.

I will totally agree that it is probably a good game for what it tries to be but I am only stating what I feel would be an even better game, more immersion, more freedom etc.

People don't know what they want until they get it most of the time. I can't see how adding more depth to the Batman character and the world he is in would make it less of a good game.

It would be like if they made a Berserk game and all you did was slay monsters 24/7 with additional cutscenes (yes already made, the PS2 & Dreamcast game). Wouldn't you love to be able to have a little freedom playing as Guts? Walking around the camp/world, interacting with the Band of the Hawk. I think you can see the possibilities.

It's easy to say "well they are just trying to make a good game with the same formula (if it ain't broke..)". I work at a game company and everyone is making compromises which is sometimes completely necessary but a lot of the times it's just bad game designers making bad decisions.

I could probably continue for a long time explaining why I think it could be a lot better than it might be, all I'm saying is open your mind and see the possibilities :carcus:

Well yea true, but I read somewhere (can't remember source) that the next game would involve the Batmobile and Gotham City as a whole. So who knows, this series could turn into the exact game you are describing. As for now, Arkham City is a direct sequel to Arkham Asylum. so yea.
What I meant by refreshing is kind of what I think Griffith is referring too. So many games (Spiderman included) try to replicate that massive city experience with hundreds of npcs walking around a giant open sandbox. And while some games are better at this than others, I really didn't think it added much in the last few Spiderman games. In fact, the aimlessly moving npcs cheapened it, imo. So for me it's refreshing a game not taking that route. BUT, I know what you mean and if done right and it has potential to be totally awesome. If they go that route in the future, I have faith they could pull it off with this series. As for now though, Arkham Asylum was surprisingly wonderful and this being a direct sequel with more content, characters, challenges, secrets and a 20+ hour main campaign is more than enough for me. Since I plan on taking it slow and going for 100% completion who knows how long this game could stretch to.

I agree that particular sentiment sounded more like "this game can do no wrong" than an argument for lack of pedestrians, but to Oburi's point those kind of NPCs can be hit or miss (especially in large doses), and I'm sure they're going to have a few like the last game.

Hey, it could still happen, I just wonder if would be all you're hoping for anyway, or just a poor imitation of those games. Sometimes getting almost what you want is far more disappointing than something different like this. At least you can just enjoy it for what it is.

Ill pick up my copy on Thursday since I won't have a chance to play it till then (30 hours in 3 days ugh). Let me know if the intro is as good as people are saying.

Picked up the game last night. First impressions: solid. Seems to be more or less of the same mechanics from the first game. The gadget and abilities screens are more streamlined for the better. The pseudo sandbox feel really lends itself to batman I think. I'd say I feel like I'm in batman's shoes as much or more than the first game.

Also if anyone cares about additional skins for the game, NOS energy drink has a promotion for the batman beyond skin (which looks quite cool). All you have to do is

1)buy a NOS energy drink (got one from my local gas station for a dollar)
2)get a rewards code from under the tab of the can
3)register at www.drinknos.com (just name, email and address)
4)redeem the code for the skin from their rewards catalogue (www.drinknos.com/rewards.do)

They are limited to 50,000 skins for xbox and 50,000 for ps3. You could theoreticaly buy 10 cans and get 10 codes for 10 skins if you wanted to pass them out to your friends. Last time I checked they were down to about 46 or 48,000 left. I would imagine they will be all gone in several weeks time.

Thanks so much for the heads-up, Frank! I caught onto this little treat earlier but was skeptical. Quite a few vids out with questionable ways of obtaining Batman AC skins, more than a few showcasing how to obtain keygens and whatnot. So that's where my skepticism came from. But as more and more hours/days went on with my searching for footage of the batsuit, the NOS program started garnering some legitimacy.

I'm already hot on this deal, but thanks again for the step-by-step guide to getting everybody's Batman of the Future on!

Enjoy Arkham City everybody!

Just out of curiosity, but looking at this picture,

and comparing Batman Beyond to Batman: TAS, the Batman Beyond skin a lot more refined and detailed don't you'd think? Kinda cool they went the extra step there I guess.

I think that DKR one is easily the coolest. Old fart, future Batman kicking in heads? Count me in.

Yeah the detail rocks, but I'm glad they left TAS skin cartoony though. It wouldn't be very representative of TAS if they detailed the crap out of it. The sinestro skin is not on there either. Has anyone else gotten a chance to play this delectable game yet?

I got to play it a few hours on Tuesday and IMO game was awesome. Nice how you have all of your gadgets from the first game. :ubik: I wished I could have played all night though.

The game is great. All the elements that I liked about the previous tittle are there, and with new tricks up the sleeve. Anyone who enjoyed the first one, will enjoy this one for sure. Catwoman is a VERY good addition to the gameplay. I enjoyed playing her as I did playing Batman. In other words, if you're still "on the fence" with it... Go ahead and get it, or rent it... Or just borrow it.

As for the skins? I wouldn't worry about it guys, I'm sure they'll all be in a DLC sooner or later.

Been playing like crazy. The main story is great. The way they added so many villains into the game and tied them together is awesome. Some unexpected character surprises too! Overall it's just a great play, and those Riddler challenges can get preeeetty difficult, which is good. :serpico:

I know, the game is just awesome from every angle. Currently replaying through New Game +. Its difficult fighting guys without the counter icon appearing over their heads...

Finished it last night. Loved the main story.
That ending was perfect. Suprise fight with Clayface was my favorite fight and I imagine it would look incredible in 3D. I couldn't believe Joker died at the end :isidro: That was intense. Although I still didn't finish the Riddler sidequests. I have two or three more. The only sidequests I finished were Bane's, Zasz, Catwomen (if you count that) and the Freeze stuff. I still need to do Black Mask and other stuff like riddler trophies and saving people as well that mysterious Shredder looking dude whose leaving the symbols.

Great game though.

Super spoilers:

I was left feeling empty with the ending, especially with him singing through the credits. It all seemed so.... hollow. I felt like since there were so many other villains in the game, Joker had less to do and less screen time this game. but that comes with the sequel territory. Clayface caught me by surprise, was kind of a weak boss fight though. Don't forget you also have to do the Deadshot sniper missions, the identity killer side missions, and Azrael missions ('mysterious Shredder looking dude'). You can also find killer croc underneath in the sewers somewhere.

Nightwing DLC comes out today!

So I finally tried it too and it's actually quite decent and I've been having fun so far. The characters are great and the combat/gadgets are just as fun as the original game and more. I really liked the intro (won't spoil) but let's just say I got a tiny taste of what I wanted in "my" Batman game hehe.
