Movies to ???
« on: February 02, 2013, 09:42:39 AM »
Let's try an experiment: I've been wanting to make this thread for a while for those movies and trailers that you... just don't know how to feel about. :???: The rules are basically that there's no rules, and the stakes are low since you neither have to endorse or denounce any upcoming films you post, just throw it out there.

A humble beginning with an indie movie that, as the thread implies, I'm not looking forward to, dreading, don't care about, nor will likely ever see...  Quentin Dupieux's Wrong.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiHc72YHZBM

I don't know if I would enjoy two hours of this forced weirdness, nor do I approve of the trailer trying to emphasize it's weird movie cred by referencing practically every famous weird film/maker, but for two minutes... sure, why not? In no small part because it features Eastbound & Down's own Steve Little, who is a fearless comedic actor (get naked, fuck a prostitute, and shave all the hair on your head fearless). Anyway, if I happened to see it, I'd guess that I'd get a kick out of it, or be annoyed, but in either case quickly forget about it. So... don't feel the need to check it out, but if you do, tell me what you think, or don't, because...

Heh, I feel similar to you about that movie, it's not like I DREAD it since I have no expectations of it but I don't look forward to it. The forced QUIRKINESS offends me on some many level(s) though.

Is it okay to post movies that are actually already out and we've always kinda edged around watching them since we have that feeling about them? I'm not sure what would fit the bill for me at the moment but I think there's some lurking in the back of my mind that I may or may not remember in the near future.

^ Hahaha. Run John Run.

I'd have to say Stephen Chow's new movie fits this perfect, I can't make my mind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_bzZh2JoQg&feature=player_embedded

I love some of his older movies but ...

Quote
Yesterday, The Walt Disney Co. unveiled plans to make a number of spin-off movies set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away — in addition to the post-Return of the Jedi trilogy that had already been announced.

Entertainment Weekly has learned details on two of the spin-off projects: A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum.

Precisely the sort of thing this thread was made for. So it truly begins...

In a nutshell, Disney now owns Star Wars and it will now be franchised on a level unprecedented even for Star Wars. That alone is kind of dreadful. Literally. Like kind of an intimidating thought. You won't be able to go outside without being bombarded by Star Wars crap.

People were so focused on the next trilogy, or just the next movie to be precise, that this sort of franchising wasn't really being discussed. It's not surprising in hindsight considering that Disney also owns Marvel, and this indicates they view it more like that kind of umbrella property than a specific series or character under said umbrella. One thing is for sure, for better or worse, we're not going to look at Star Wars the same way in 10 years, and the films certainly won't be a "precious" commodity except for the original theatrical cut trilogy (BTW, think that's a shoe in for wide release now, or did Lucas ban it in the sale contract? =).

This sounds just about as cool as the Han Solo dance.

Wait, does anyone actually want those movies to happen? Is my frothing demand barometer broken? I thought that whole Boba-Fett's-arbitrarily-such-a-badass-!-! movement died like a fart in the wind when they tried to cash in with his "origin" in Episode II. The Han Solo thing also feels like a cheap grab. Why not explore the universe a little further than the known quantities? That feels less risky to me than attempting to revitalize something that's long dead. Maybe I'm just naive...

You know, that was one of my very first thoughts when I first heard about the Disney acquisition  :daiba:

Moving onto new territory... JJ Abrams is now talking with Gabe Newell of Valve, and apparently it could end with a Portal or Half-Life movie and/or game collusion. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02/06/d-i-c-e-2013-newell-vs-abrams-fight/

we sort of reached the point where we decided that we needed to do more than talk. So we’re gonna try and figure out if we can make a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie together.” Meanwhile, Abrams added: “And we have a game idea we’d like to work with Valve on.”

“It’s time for our industries to stop talking about potential and really execute on it,” Newell concluded.
Valve has a promising track record. And previously, Gabe has said that they wouldn't make a Half-Life movie until it was a project that made sense for the franchise. So... I'm erring on the side of Valve for this one... but I can't escape my gut. *rumble*

No, you're not, it's not a great idea. Harrison Ford is Han Solo, there's basically no character beyond his performance, and Boba Fett is literally an empty suit of armor. It's a way to completely water down the brand for some fast cash. Though, I don't like the idea of straying too far from the beaten path where it could just be something else either, but they can strike that balance well enough in this new trilogy. I don't mind them pumping these out forever, but they should at least try to follow a linear model.

You know, that was one of my very first thoughts when I first heard about the Disney acquisition  :daiba:

The theatrical cuts, or the fact that Star Wars movies are going to go from this rare thing to the Marvel model? Either way, look forward to seeing Boba Fett: The Movie Part II the summer after Han Solo: Part III, but preceding the Leia Loves Solo computer animated romcom from Pixar after they finish Clone Wars II, before Fett's adventures continue in crossover blockbuster Boba Fett vs. Predator!

When is Abrams going to have time for all this shit? Better hope he's just producing if you want to see one of those movies any time soon... or are you more intrigued by the gaming potential they're hinting at?

I think the new trilogy should be grounded by some common themes (legacy of parents will surely be one), but otherwise I hope it goes in new directions, new places and new scenarios, and not necessarily the predictable "Remnants of the Empire are Fighting Back!"

I'm not even intrigued, really. Like I said, I just have faith in Valve to not agree to a movie deal unless it was something special. That wariness is why I posted it in this thread =)

As for Abrams schedule, based on his career thus far I'd say it's par for the course. I just hope the guy eventually has some time to develop some more original stuff.

You mean you don't want to spend half the movies on Tatooine!? Then you're probably not going to like the villain, Clone Vader, either. =)

Well, I have less faith on that front. Valve is reliable when it comes to games, but even assuming they know dick about making movies, too much of it is going to be out of their hands for it to matter once they agree to a deal (remember how discerning Miura was being turning away all those offers until one wowed him?). I don't even think there's a great track record of game makers turned film makers adapting their work, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Wing Commander are all that come to mind, let alone Hollywood's game to movie success ratio in general. Still, if their Hollywood connection gets it, and Abrams certainly could, there's reason for optimism.

At this point I just don't want him to fuck up Star Trek and Star Wars. No pressure. :daiba:

The Wolverine, domestic long version trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=z-Yu9uwHLVI

Looks entertaining and can also sense a bit of disappointment creeping in. Does what you see follow the story in the comic? A pal recently let me borrow his comics but haven't had the time to go through em.

I know the comics pretty well from when I read them as a teenager, but Griffith could probably speak more authoritatively on this.

At first I thought it was going to follow the first Wolverine miniseries (Claremont/Miller), given the trip to Japan thing. But no, it looks like it's just going to piecemeal the lore from many sources while adding its own flavor, as these things tend to do.  Personally, I don't really care about those sorts of things from American comics, so long as they craft a decent, cohesive story out of it. I really liked First Class for doing that, even if it is sort of crazy in terms of what it does with the lore.

I wasn't that impressed with the trailer, but also wasn't turned off. So, looks like a perfect fit for this thread.

Not too familiar with the Japan stories, but personally I prefer when it's his invaluable adamantium that is being hunted. Without it he goes totally feral and his healing factor is significantly increased. (edit::: which reminds me, the reason for this is his healing factor is constantly having to combat the adamantium which would otherwise poison his body and kill him I believe...)

It's like they're going for the opposite here. FOX needs to just give the property back to Marvel/Disney and stop it IMHO.

Let's hope the villain is interesting I guess.

I do still have the comics for that story as well as a hardbound edition (:carcus:), but I couldn't have said it better (though did you really believe it would actually follow the successful source material it's ripping off? Naaaah =). I agree on First Class 100%, and am looking forward to Days of Future Past for the same reasons, but this trailer looks more like X-Men Origins 2 than the high-brow Nolanesque Wolverine film we were teased with back when Darren Aronofsky was on the job. Now it seems as if they thought just putting "the" in front of the title would do it (I also see it's RISING SOON... ).

Speaking of THE Wolverine, I too am apparently not Mr. Sunshine:

(Fast forward to about the 12:35 mark if youtube code isn't cooperating)

No. Just no. That looks deplorable.

But, to be fair, even when Aranofsky was on board I had very little hope for it. Now it's zero.

Man Of Tai Chi ... Keanu Reeves' directorial debut. That new camera-tech is cool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5186tXz0cU) and one of the dudes from The Raid is in it, but Reeves is so ... wooden. This could go either way I think. The plus side - visuals via the new camera-tech; 40 mins of fighting. The down side - looks too serious, so the script better be good; the end of the trailer with Keanu looks cheesy enough.
