Is most manga rubbish?

I've been trying to expand my manga library and try and find something out there that's worth investing time in. I recently found that Toriko series which is hilarious and such and oddball concept that I enjoy it quite a bit when I want something more lighthearted. For those who haven't heard of it it's like DBZ meets Iron Chef. I've read some of Blade of the Immortal and it's decent but just seems too familiar when it comes to characters, story-lines, etc. etc. Just finished with Basilisk and needless to say I wasted my time. I also invested some time in that The Breaker series but besides decent artwork it reminded me why I hate (as a general rule) Shounen so much.

I've read manga for the past 10+ years but it seems like, as in many other art forms, there are a few innovators and an endless number of imitators.

So is finding decent manga (especially Seinen) basically looking for a needle in a haystack?

You said it yourself: as in many other art forms, there are a few innovators and an endless number of imitators.

Finding series that approach the caliber of Berserk is certainly going to be a tall order.

Read One Piece. It's worth it.

Seconded.

There's a lot out there and it depends on your preference as well. I found Toriko pretty boring.

Most manga are superficial, especially shounen, all these love comedies etc. If you wanna find really good series you have to look deep in the internet. Some of really awesome seinen manga I know are Homunculus , Shamo,Mori Kouji's works(Suicide Island,Holyland,Destroy x Revolution) , Hito Hitori Futari , I am a hero ,Wolf Guy, and Saruwatari Tetsuya's mangas,he has these really over-the-top masculine mangas, some of them inspired by 80's american blockbusters or Nazi theme etc.

I've read quite a bit and it's difficult to find something on the same level as Berserk. I would say Lone Wolf and Cub is a good read and pretty decent.
