Calling for a major character to arbitrarily die without precedent sounds a little morbid to me. And the way you've worded this makes it sound like the God Hand are actively hunting Guts down just to torture him, which just isn't the case. Guts was in Slan's realm when she manifested.

I may be wrong Walter, but I just have a feeling we will see some fairly epic battles involving Guts and his crew.  Given the sense of realism the series has tried to create, sooner or later there are bound to be casualties.  Unless people think that Guts is going to go it alone and take revenge on Griffith (or just give up on that altogether, and we've seen the last of The Beast).  So I guess on some level it is morbid, but so was a lot of early Berserk (the Eclipse in particular).  My hunch is that the internal dilemma of protecting the people he cares about and seeking revenge is going to play out in rather dramatic fashion, and Guts has had a tendency of trying to rationalize what he should do and what he wants (as in the Black Swordsman arc).  I wonder if he won't rationalize that he can protect the people he cares about, while taking them with him on his journey to seek out Griffith.  I'm also not too clear on what the God Hand's ability to effect the world is now, but I have to believe that even they are very interested in the abilities of those in Skellig.  So it seems to me that Guts is setting himself up to find that thing he thought he had lost (again), in this new band and Casca, only to possibly throw it all away (again).  I think it all hinges on Casca when/if she regains herself.  Maybe Guts won't make the same mistake, we shall see said the blind man.

EDIT:  *Just picking up on the "without precedent" part, I think the precedent I was trying to reference (albeit not as well as I wanted) was the original Band of the Hawk.  Guts could once again find that thing he lost, but will he lose it again just as he lost Judo, Pippin, etc?  So I'm seeing a parallell here that you don't agree with or don't expect to play out, I think.

Maybe you forgot that we started this conversation by limiting the speculation to things that were likely to happen _this year_. You said so in your initial post, but now you're posting somewhat end-game speculations. That's why I was critical of them.

By without precedent, I meant there is currently no immediate threat that I think could bring about the demise of someone in the group. And by morbid I meant that without context or specifics, simply positing that you think someone will die eventually in the series isn't very meaningful.

Big picture? Of course there's a threat. The Beast even hints about one or many of them dying like in the Eclipse, and then would swallow Guts completely. But do you really foresee that happening in Episodes 334-339, or whatever we're expected to get in the remainder of this year?

Hope we get to see Skellig before inner-Falconia. I'm sure Griffith's domain is going to be striking but we've been ♫waiting so long♫ to reach this damn island! Also, I expect that to begin with, most of the Falconia stuff is going to be Rickert doing an =o face at everything he sees whilst everyone sings Griffith's praises. Skellig is a complete mystery to us all.

It's likely that the next episode will be a continuation of 333, given that we've seen a small slice of it in the preview at the end of Volume 37.  That being said, by this point Miura could easily have restructured things, and when 334 arrives it will return to Guts' side of things.

Both options are great, in my opinion. And either way, we'll know soon enough.

No! Soon enough is too long. I want to know now!

Joke aside I think we'll get a couple of episodes on Falconia. Well at least one for sure. Then I would not be surprise to see the story switching on the boat again. And humm my take is they'll get to Elfhelm after maybe a couple more episodes on the water. I didn't get my crash by storm though, sooooo maybe they'll crash! nah for real I don't think my wish of a storm is gonna come to reality since the boat has already had some damage in their last adventure, so I doubt Miura will "break" the ship again. So yeah Elfhelm by the end of the year.

Now all I gotta ask myself is what I should celebrate with! I actually can't wait to see this new episode, there's been far too much speculation about what's going to happen in 334...now we finally get to see!!!!!!

If I had to pick between seeing Skellig or Falconia I'd pick Falconia personally. I would also hope we continue to follow Rickert and Erica, I can easily see these two having a phenomenal story-telling perspective. Miura technically started it as far back as right before the Eclipse! :)

I didn't notice it until today when reviewing the actual magazine, but the ending text in the bonus episode of Gigantomakhia does mention Falconia, Rickert and Erica. So, odds are high that's what 334 will be.

Sorry I didn't notice it until today...

I'm wondering Will they arrive at skellig? Or are they first going to YS to find information about skellig?
I can't really remember what the plan was of guts & Co. So this Will mean I will have to reread the manga tomorrow.

I don't think they will stop at Ys(?) Roderick is giving them a lift directly to Skellig Island. Now my question is, next time we see them on the ship, will they arrive or more shit is gonna happen before they reach it.

Btw thank you Walter for pointing out the info about 334.

I think the merrow escort makes it a pretty safe bet the rest of the journey should be smooth. The circumstances of their arrival might be interesting though. As in, will it be like parking at any other island and rowing the rest of the way in? Will they be 'tractored', perhaps magically? Maybe go into a mist and navigation go wild, then open up on Elfhelm?

However doubtful it'd be cool if Skellig was like, an island floating in the sky, maybe making their arrival even more bizarre. I guess I'm thinking something like Neverland in Peter Pan.  :serpico: Could be cool.

One thing I feel like for sure is, that Elfhelm exists in the astral world, I believe it was all but confirmed as it's historically very difficult to find, like Flora's mansion. Anyway, I'm sure Hanafubuku Oh will have some say in their arrival, perhaps Schierke was right to some degree, even if the Moonlight Boy isn't him, he could be guiding or present to some extent.

(edit: Sorry about errors I was really tired from work when I wrote this.  :iva: )

Magical dimension...? You mean the astral world?

I realize that's what Dark Horse chose for his name, but it's really quite a stupid choice. It's not a translation, it's a transliteration of the Japanese. May as well call Guts the KUROI KENSHI (Black Swordsman), and refer to the Dragon Slayer a DAI KEN (big sword). Hanafubuku Oh isn't his name--it's translated as the King of Flower Storm. Or if you want a more generic term, he's the Elf King. I think Hanafubuku became popular because people didn't like saying King of Flower Storm.

yeah I forgot about the merrows escorting them, slipped my mind. I'm wondering if Skellig is a rather big island, with Elfhelm situated like in the middle or something...

That sucks to learn. I would have prefer to read the real translation rather then the transliteration. Didn't they do something weird with Skullknight's sword too? Oh no if I'm not wrong they just fucked up the translation for that sword...

Dark Horse calls the technique "The Sword of Actuation."

Is it accurate? Wasn't it supposed to be "the sword of resonance"? I like to know the real stuff and this is the best place to get it.  :guts: (then I'll stop being off topic promise!)

Wasn't it supposed to be "the sword of resonance"?

No, no wasn't. The name of the technique in Japanese is "Yobimizu no Tsurugi". "Tsurugi" means a sword with a double edge. The word "Yobimizu" is a reference to what the beherits are called earlier in the manga (in volume 13): "Ikai e no Yobimizu". That roughly translates as "drops of primed water leading to another world". The basic meaning of the word by itself would be to "prime a pump" in the dictionary, although Miura used a different kanji in the name (呼び水 -> 喚び水) with a "yo" furigana.

The end result is that there's no elegant way to accurately translate it in English, but one thing's for sure: "resonance" is definitely not proper. "Actuation" is not too bad, but it's also not perfect. The word is supposed to both convey the act of calling (with a lot of nuance in how it can be interpreted: summoning, awakening, even a reference to the beherits' cry) and to have a direct connotation to water, which isn't the case here. In the end, given that it's meant to relate to beherits, I just call it the beherit sword. Simple, efficient.

Yeah I'm debating as to wether I should start a rereading session before the next episode, but it's kinda coming soon.

I'm wondering if the episode will start with Rickert and Erica already inside of Falconia or if we're gonna get their reaction at the gates? Small detail I know haha

The official YA preview for the next issue is up.

http://www.younganimal.com/magazine/next.html

The text mentions Rickert. Have we seen that shot of Guts before...? There's apparently some special Berserk bookmark that will come with the magazine? Maybe? Having trouble translating all of the text due to the ridiculously small image... If that's the case, I'll scan mine when it arrives.

Hey, maybe it'll be fashioned after the bookmark we sent Miura back in '09!    :puck: :guts: :griffnotevil: :schierke: :badbone: :void: :zodd:

Really looking forward to a peek inside Falconia.  It's a pretty huge turning point for the series.  My bet is on everything feeling utopian for now like a fairy tale kingdom. Maybe we'll even see the God Hand in human forms. Doubt it though. I feel like next couple episodes really are going to determine where the series goes in a big way.  Can't wait.

BTW, I love the bookmark Walter.
