All I want to do is...bicycle.
Hunter S. Thompson killed himself tonight.  I haven't read his more recent work...Time for a trip to the library.

Kingdom of Fear was nothing great, and beyond that the newest "stuff" was more Gonzo papers and The Rum Diary. He is still, and forever shall be, the fucking man. I would argue that The Curse of Lono is probably the best of his work, but it is all great. Knowing that amazing bastard, he probably shot himself more out of a desire to go down gloriously than for a depression or real desire to die. Perhaps not, but it would be in keeping with the majority of his life.
