Hurricane Katrina

So, what's the deal guys? I keep hearing news of apocalypse on TV here, and I heard that Bush had refused the help Germany, France and Russia offered, only to accept it a few hours later...

Is it really that bad? The news here showed some tourist guy that just came back from New Orleans crying like a little girl just from remembering "teh h0rr0r", it was pretty embarassing.

Any reaction or comment concerning the events?

Well, New Orleans is basically wiped out, and completely flooded over. They had droves of people going to the Astro dome and on interstate 10. It's a real tragedy, to say the least.

That, and the oil prices shot up because an oil rig was pulled off its bearing and smashed into a bridge. This just absolutely sucks :judo:.

I don't know about the Bush thing, so I really can' say.

Yeah, I've seen footage of people massed in the Superdome, then footage of other people looting supermarkets to get food and water.

yea it really is a tragedy in every sense of the word. Entire neighborhoods wiped out, entire cities underwater, widespread looting. Gas prices going up as a result, its at 3$ a gallon here, 6bucks in Atlanta (which I suppose is the closest major city to me).
There are also reports of people shooting at the rescue helicopters. Not sure of the details on that one, but apparently its happened. Its really a sad situation.

I saw the news today where they were mentioning that shots were being fired at military helicopters which were trying to evacuate people.  Buncha geniuses down there. :schierke:  But yeah, it's being labled the "worst natural disaster to hit the U.S. in recorded history."  New Orleans is pretty much gone.  The French quarter might be salvageable, but most of it is history.  The death toll is currently in the thousands and they say it could reach as high as 40,000 by the end of it.  I feel really bad for all the people down there.

EDIT: On a more positive note, by girlfriend's cousin who lives in (and was safetly evacuated from) New Orleans, gave birth a few days before the hurricane hit...she named the baby girl Katrina. :griff:

Like others have said, it's a horrendous situation there. A few thousand Louisiana National Guardsmen were activated to be sent as relief over there. Thousands are feared dead according New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin & the city's going to be abandoned for a few months to get the feces infested waters drained and get things in order.

I have received this in my e-mail :

You can provide temporary housing to a New Orleans area refugee:
http://www.hurricanehousing.org/host.html

You can set limits on who is placed with you (able bodied,
retirement age, has a dog, no cats please, whatever). You can
change or withdraw your offer at any time.

Relief agencies will contact you to select a match and make the
necessary travel arrangements. You will most likely receive someone
from the stadium so that they can accommodate additional refugees
inside the stadium.

Housing is most urgently needed within driving distance (about 300
miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New
Orleans. But no matter where you live, you can still make a world
of difference to a person in need, so please offer what you can.

If you do not have bed space available, you can volunteer your own
self, or donate funds:

VOLUNTEER TO GO AND HELP:
https://www.saussw.org/crd/dsrreg.nsf/registrationw?OpenForm

DONATE:
https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

Thank you,

Yeah exact, they also talked about that... Pretty sad, and the people interviewed looked pretty pissed about their situation and the actions taken to help them.

Wow, I hadn't heard anything close to these numbers...

Haha, well she still has her sense of humor at least.

40,000 is an exaggeration. I highly doubt it to be this high.

however the situation is dire, and snipers taking out hospital transports isn't helping.

The quote I heard on the news was something like "Katrina could cause up to 40,000 deaths." And they don't mean in just New Orleans, but within the whole area. It does sound like a lot of people, but then again the tsunami that happend not too long ago caused about 180,000 deaths. Either way, I hope to God that the death toll is relatively small compared to the destruction caused.

The tsunami was much larger. The 40,000 number is from the "worst case scenario" that was determined before the hurricane actually hit. It also said that sulphuric acid would saturate the area, causing acid rain from the power plants that would have been destroyed. Well, that didn't happen.

Honestly though, it is a lot worse than I thought it would be. The gas shortage in the US is a temporary problem, obviously. But getting Mississipi, not to mention the Big Easy back to normal will take years. Seems to get worse everyday. Like 9/11, we can't grasp all the implications of this event until several weeks from now.

Did terrorists start the hurricane? :isidro:

That makes sense.  Odds were that I heard it out of context.

Katrina came... from VENEZUELA!

yea the ytmnd gif is hilarious, lets hope for a Zangeif vs. ______ fad.

While I don't expect the casualty list to be 40,000, its definately very high and the list will prob. keep going as conditions (sewage, cajuns with guns aimed at helicopters) worsen.

My brother has been in Orleans during the last 2 days without rest.  Today him and his squadron  rescued 183 people and counting.  The part that aggravates me is that heir are actually people shooting at these choppers.  Cause of it?, don't have a clue... But I'm talking hundreds of people here.  Today they sent Cobra's and Apache units to escort the rescuers.  Sad I may say, never thought people would actually do that.  If my brother takes pictures, Ill post them here.

  EDIT: nevermind...

That's him. I'll ask for damage pics once he gets back...hopefully

Yes, quite shocking, especially considering I visited New Orleans 7 months ago and Gulfport/Biloxi about a year ago when Hurrican Ivan *almost* hit.

I'm wondering how long it will take for the water to finally recede in New Orleans. I can't recall flood surging this bad in the US since the hurricane that hit Galveston TX over 100 years ago. I'm also surprised that the flood wall was relatively ineffective.

Governor talking, gotta love it:

National Guardsmen were being sent to quell the unrest. "They have M-16s and are locked and loaded. These troops know how to shoot and kill and I expect they will," Kathleen Blanco said.
"We're not into the blame game... I've been trying to save lives," she said.

Great. :schierke:

While I don't advocate the killing of rioters, I can't think of a more successful way to quell a rebellion. It worked for Napoleon, dismissing parliament rioters with "A whiff of grapefruit" (cannon fire). :SK:

STOP UNDRESSING ME WITH YOUR EYES!
New Orleans has basically turned into a nightmare, and given the conditions, I'm not sure 7500 troops will be enough to restore order. It'll take a long time to get fresh water there, even after the floods drain off (which is a bit tough in a city 10 feet below sea level).

Regardless, NOLA will be rebuilt, though I would hope they bring some of the Dutch experts over to plan the protections against repeats of Katrina.

It will involve a thumb.

That convention center is one place I'm very glad I'm not in, right now. Seems like a living hell.

I`ve read that the money that was supposed to go to repairing the dam went to Iraq instead.......I`ve also read that one of the reasons the city got flooded this bad was that the swamps around the area have been disappearing due to the water being pumped out of them, thus causing New Orleans to sink even farther beneath sea level. Just brilliant........

60% of the police department in Orleans and others have officially quit. Thousands of bodies are starting to emerge. Things keep getting worst and worst.
