Of the three it's probably the best and most watchable movie, but talk about damning something with faint praise

Agreed.

it's also the one that officially started the destruction of the Star Wars mythology, which, considering it's extent already and vast potential, is a pretty impressive feat of fail. Still, was only the beginning of the end, it didn't hit me hardest because there was still hope despite the obvious trepidation going forward, because a winning second entry could have been the kind of payoff that validated the first and pulled the series out of its tailspin for a triumphant rise back to the top, then... Attack of the Clones happened. Subjectively, maybe the worst movie of my life. Whatever an affirmation of life is, this was the opposite, not to mention it was the meat in a shit sandwich, and worse, when it was over (the best part), you knew it wasn't even really over yet. It was the true nadir, and it certainly changed the way I thought of the first movie, because suddenly I was nostalgic for even the "good old days" of The Phantom Menace; of the event that Episode I was and the positive hype and excitement that surrounded it going in and even watching it the first time, positive feelings that still permeate my memory of it in hindsight. The last time that was the case for Star Wars, before it was a grudging childhood death march to the theater.

Not to overstate it or anything. =)

Honestly that's pretty much my exact experience you just described. Not the first time we talk about it but it's still uncanny to me how similarly we feel on this issue.

For the anecdote, Episode 3 wasn't as negative an experience because I went to see it with Walter and we just kind of laughed through it. Still awful though. :iva:

Yeah, I think most fans had a similar experience, whether they remember it that way or not. Speaking of which, the real shame of it is not that the prequels themselves were bad, but that they reflected so badly on Star Wars in general, that even the legacy of the original trilogy was tarnished in the general culture. I'm trying to think of another case where someone or something has come out of retirement past its prime and done so much damage to its legacy. Watching Attack of the Clones was far worse than seeing Michael Jordan play for the Wizards. BTW, this decade sucks. =)

One place it wasn't hurt was worldwide box office: http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide

Man, I didn't know four movies had joined the billion club, quality of the movies aside, that's quite a feather in the cap of the directors. BTW, check out Avatar's rank (hint: it's higher than you think).

Yeah, that one benefited from having the expectations of a punchline, and it certainly delivered! So bad it's almost good.

I'd say Terminator 3, but it's not really on the same level.

I wonder how far Avatar will go. Top 10? Top 5? First place seems almost unreachable when you compare it to the others. It's those crazy women who went to see the movie 10 times. :iva:

Yeah, and Terminator is still considered cool overall, while the prequels more or less tipped the balance of society against Star Wars forever.

I've never met a fan of either, but I love those shred videos, and this one is Fred Durst, and it's REAL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UQ_ZhC-1CU

Also, if you haven't seen the Radio Disney Slipknot or Jonas Brothers death metal videos, you should.

The Angry Nerd reviews Street Fighter 2010 and touches on some of the rest of the series while he's at it. He also goes into some nice general game playing phenomenon at the end. Reminds me of what it's like to master a Mega Man or old school Castlevania game.

Also, i shit you not, he just made a symphonic metal album (not narrator work, actual singing).

Already mentioned by Dar Klink in the music thread, and yea... its pretty awesome. The 87 year old horror movie actor doing a metal album about the Charlemagne? sign me up!

Brilliant artist, great insight. The only problem is the poor sound quality, but it's still watchable.
