Most house problems aren't due simply to the house not being all that great but because the owner is handyman inept.
This may be gross but the reason the shower could be clogged is because people with long hair showered without a hair net so there could be clumps of nasty hair caught down the drain. Once scooped out with an improvised hook (I just bent a coat rack), the drain could work fine. If there is no hair then the problem could be structural.
I know Drano advertises that one of their max gels gets rid of hair clumps, but I can't say from experience that it actually does. The hair gets caught and tied around parts of the drain. And Drano doesn't undo hair knots.
