Sorry if anyone gets excited by this revived thread as I don't have any good news, but a friend just linked me this old article and I found it very interesting: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/12/fail_duke_nukem/

Basically details the internal struggles of the 3D Realms team and the fall of DNF.

It's nothing new for those who've followed the various announcements over the years, but it does indeed do a good job of recapitulating what happened and why. It's really too bad because if only Broussard had had someone to keep him in check, the company could have probably released 3 nice games over these 12 years.

The picture is of pigs flying. It could have something to do with 2K making a "big" announcement on an upcoming game tomorrow, at the start of PAX. Gearbox is rumored to be working on a Duke game. It could be Duke Nukem Forever, or it could just be "Duke Begins," a completely different title. Or... hey, another Borderlands would be great too!

But seeing as how Broussard is posting this image a day before the announcement ... it makes me wonder.

people playing the demo

edit
Besides the novelty of it coming out finally, I can't say I'm terribly impressed by what I've seen so far in the stream. Hopefully it's more fun to play than it is to watch. To be honest it looks like Borderlands with a fresh coat of paint (it is a Gearbox game now, and the level I was watching was a desert one)

This reminds me exactly of how Chinese Democracy came out, after 13 years, and seemingly like it was never going to happen... it suddenly drops out of nowhere (it's even being completed by a totally different group =). It must be mixed feelings for 3D Realms people, on the one hand it's finally coming out and your efforts will bear some fruit, and Gearbox seems to be trying to connect their own efforts to and credit 3D Realms' for authenticity; but, at the same time, another team basically had to come in, clean up their mess, and finish their own game for them. It's the best of both world's in the long run though, 3D Realms can take credit for all the good stuff, and blame anything unpopular on Gearbox, "It would have been way better had they let us finish it... in 2029," thereby continuing the myth of the legendary Duke Nuken Forever that could have been. :badbone:

Based on what I've seen from the demo and live footage, it's not that impressive. For better or for worse, it truly looks like a game from 1999, to me. Though I did get a laugh out of how the demo opens -- Duke peeing in a urinal. :guts:

That wouldn't happen until the very last Nukem fan has died.

I think what Eluvei meant is their all dead inside at this point. =)

Really, I'd be happy if they just released THIS version of Duke Nukem forever. Imagine if this came out in 2001 or 02?

BTW, am I only one that feels a bit squeamish that their still using Duke's famously stolen borrowed catchphrases from 3D to promote him? I understand they can't go back and undo it, but since the cat's been out of the bag for over a decade, it's embarrassing that their still trotting that material out promotionally like it's great on them when they have plenty of original (I think =) Duke sayings to choose from. It's hard to "hail to the king" with quite the same earnest enthusiasm when it's being shamelessly flaunted that he's kind of a hackjob fraud.

To me, it never got better than when Duke told Dr. Proton, "You're wrong, Proton breath. I'll be done with you and still have time to watch Oprah!"

Back when Duke was funny in an ironic and absurd way, before the whole thing seemed to become literal and take itself seriously over the years since 3D (that 2009 trailer being the worst offender). I still enjoy the whole intro to Duke Nukem II: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_xEtBULwUg

It'd have been momentous. Failed opportunity.

Yeah, I'm afraid what they release now won't be as good as that version even by today's standards, and of course it won't be half as innovative. Could have been one of the biggest games of the decade with a couple of sequels by now.

Haha, not a good thing for franchise obviously, that's why I don't see why they don't just drop those lines that are already the signature phrases of other characters, let alone promoting them as Duke's signature phrases. It makes them look like hacks and their franchise character look like a dumbed down ripoff rather than a fun parody. Talk about not caring.

Seriously why did they even bother using the older unfinished version of the game. They could easily make something new that would stand against the standards set by current shooter games. :iva:

The game will probably play similar to Call of Duty and other FPS games over the years.
That's... kind of a weird comparison. I think it'll probably more likely play like any given shooter in the late 90s-early 2000s. Possibly even Half-Life 2. Certainly not the continent-hopping, terrorist shooting, headshot mania that has become synonymous with CoD.
