How do you listen to Vagabond?
« on: March 05, 2008, 12:10:29 PM »
Let's see if we can get some general chatter going!

Basically, what music, if any, do you listen to whilst flicking through the pages of Inoue's masterpiece. For Berserk, any Susumu music is usually preferred, but especially the anime soundtrack. It's easy to place the two together. But Vagabond lacks an anime, so it's left up to me to put something to it.

Speaking for myself, it depends on the mood of the arc or section I'm reading. Usually I will try to find classical Japanese instrumental music, but it's sort of hard to find by itself. I've turned to other anime soundtrack in the past that are based on a similar time period. I'd highly recommend the Shigurui soundtrack if you can find it (not saying anything about the manga/anime, though). Aside from those mentioned, I like to play progressive rock/metal. Nothing too heavy (unless the scene demands it), but it has to lack vocals for the most part.

I know that some people will prefer to read it in silence, or that they believe no music would really fit -- and that's fine. But there have been times where a certain track will enhance my reading experience by such an amount that I have to go back and listen to the song whenever I reach that part of the manga again.

A "fan-soundtrack" is something that should be avoided... those sort of things are nothing short of bile deposits.

Speaking of which, I'm done throwing up ideas onto this post.

Silence!!!! .. is my preference.   :guts:
I cant read manga while listening to music.
It's like watching a movie while playing solitaire.

I don't listen to music for Vagabond. But when a new Berserk ep comes out, I will generally put on Susumu's stuff for the background just to enhance the effect and make it a real moment.   :casca:

I don't usually read it to music, unless it's in my head. Exceptions I can recall are when I read some Vagabond volumes while I was listening to Voices of the Lifestream in the background, which was more convenience than setup, and after playing the song in Rock Band ad nauseam with some friends I was listening to THIS on youtube and went through a couple of recent chapters:

Strangely fitting. :guts:

I, too, usually read in silence, mostly because I go through whatever I'm reading so quickly that it really doesn't make sense to try and set it to music. However, I made an exception with Vagabond when I read vol. 2 the other day in B&N and happened to have my mp3 player going. I have to say, it did enhance the experience a bit, listening to tracks from this album in particular. Like Uriel, I think a classic instrumental aspect complements the read, but also, the heavy metal hooks and melodies gives it a really good mix. Granted, the vocals are kind of distracting, but it kind of surprised me how well it worked, so I plan on reading future volumes set to this.

HIGHLIGHTED TRACKS:
The Reason
Lost Gift
One Breath
Awaken
Fate

I think the band would be flawless (aside from some of the bland lyrics) if only the male singer didn't sometimes growl like he was trying to copy the "vocalist" of some generic nu-metal band.

Addendum: I also highly recommend the Way of the Samurai OST. Very good stuff.

Coincidentally, look what I found at my local record store today!

As for me, I usually don't listen to anything if I'm _reading_ a chapter.  If I'm looking at untranslated scans I imagine the best stuff to listen to would be instrumental, preferably something like kodo drums  :guts:
I'm sick of following my dreams.  I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later...

Now if only you had some way to play it...

I was pretty much expecting most people to read in silence... but not all of you :P

Vagasongs?
I'm making this thread for songs or anthems that remind you of certain characters or series, that in a sense work as themes or anthems for them. For a Berserk example, think "Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who for Griffith. Anyway, I'm starting maybe with an off the wall Vagabond example, but maybe not, because you need to think off the wall for this anyway. =)

During the NBA playoffs, which I'm sure Inoue is watching as intently as I am, I've been bombarded by the very cool "Where Amazing Happens" ads, featuring "Amazing" by Kanye West. Not only cool because it's finally a musical choice that relates to a league of black superstars, but I even found it surprisingly relatable to Vagabond. Whatever you think of Kanye, give it a listen and tell me it doesn't relate to Musashi and his current status:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBZJo0-IdNg&fmt=18

It's amazing, I'm the reason
Everybody fired up this evening
I'm exhausted, barely breathing
Holding on to what I believe in

No matter what you'll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see

It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin'

I'm a monster, I'm a killer
I know I'm wrong, yeah
I'm a problem that'll never ever be solved

And no matter what you'll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see

It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin'

I'm a monster, I'm a maven
I know this world is changin'
Never gave in, never gave up
I'm the only thing I'm afraid of

No matter what you'll never take that from me
My reign is as far as your eyes can see

It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin'

Young Jeezy:
I'm amazin', yeah, I'm all that
If I ain't on my grind then what you call that?
Victorious, yeah, we warriors
We make history, strive off victory

Standing at my podium
I'm trying watch my sodium
Die high blood pressure
You even let the Feds getcha

I'm amazin', born on the full moon
I was bred to get it in, no spoon
That's why I'm so goose, summer time, no juice
Big family, small house, no rooms

They like, oh God, why you go so hard?
Look what he's been through
He deserves an applause

So amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin', so amazin', so amazin', so amazin'
It's amazin'

See, it's like Musashi's Kanye and Kojiro is Young Jeezy. :ganishka:

Anyway, I challenge you to come up with better examples of songs that remind you of certain characters or series, because there has to be some.

Good thread! I have been watching the playoffs as well and pretty much both coasts finals are pretty even. The most even I have seen in the recent years. Anyways, enough of B-ball talk. This song reminds me of the old folk in Vagabond.(Ine'i,Sekisushai and Jisai)

Old Man lyrics

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Oooh, Neil Young, nice choice.

Quote
I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.
This could end up being prophetic if Musashi ends up trying to visit old man Yagyu again.

Here's an obvious one:

Wherever I May Roam by Metallica

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmusJsDb94c&fmt=18

…And the road becomes my bride
I have stripped of all but pride
So in her I do confide
And she keeps me satisfied
Gives me all I need

…And with dust in throat I crave
Only knowledge will I save
To the game you stay a slave
Rover, wanderer
Nomad, Vagabond :carcus:
Call me what you will

But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere

Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

…And the earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
Under wandering stars I've grown
By myself but not alone
I ask no one

...And my ties are severed clean
The less I have, the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign
Rover, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll never mind anywhere

Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind
And I'll take my find anywhere

Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

Carved upon my stone
My body lie, but still I roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam

P.S. Kind of in the same vein, everyone should check out this previous thread by Uriel:
