What are you listening to? (general music thread)

OK, so MAYBE I know a little bit more of electronic music than I let on. :void: I know of Justice, but this Danger guy kicks their ass. Justice is too "ravey" for me personally, and some of it isnt even listenable, despite having catchy hooks.

To expand the thread, here's Battles' 2007 hit "Atlas." Everyone seems to love these guys, but I can't really get into anything else on the album. It's very repetitive, as you'll soon see. Still, the beats here are pretty undeniably awesome, and I just figured Id pass on the love, even though they dont get an official Wally endorsement (so valuable!).

Without the digitized vocals the song doesn't do much.

Here you go then, Ill write my own lyrics for the song, fashioned after most rave songs and you can just sing along yourself:

BEAT IT. YEEEAH.
BEAT IT. YEEEAH.
BEAT IT. YEEEAH. YEEEEEEAH.
BEAT IT. YEEEAH.
BEAT IT. YEEEAH.
BEAT IT. YEEEAH. YEEEEEEAH.
You got THE MOVES.
You got THE GROOVES.
You got IT DUDE. THE MOVES. THE MOOOOVES.
You got THE MOVES.
You got THE GROOVES.
You got IT DUDE. THE MOVES. THE MOOOOVES.
BEA-.

I wasn't talking about lyrics, I'm just saying that the "weirdness" of the vocal sound is what makes the song odd and attracts attention.

I can understand that, the problem that I have with electronic music is that it seems the artists are TOO focused on making catchy hooks, and then forget that the rest of the song needs to be awesome as well. And then theres the other end of the spectrum that wants to be different, so they ignore hooks and then make shitty music with an "experimental" label slapped on it. Its very frustrating trying to find a solid overall electronic group.

Oh there's quite a few out. This year I stumbled across this group. Don't know how old it is, but I find it quite interesting their videos are dull, but meh... just listen to a few of their songs. Midnight Juggernauts:

Totally different train of thought
I am in love with the the Dresden Dolls
i really think they are like the most amazing band of our time.
I highly highly recommend them but they're a very weird style so you'll probably really love them or not care for them. They're classified as punk cabaret but i don't really know if that description fits them.
on their website they have some songs you can download. but wow i really love them and highly recommend them to everyone.

Sigur Ros' new album comes out this week. You can listen to the whole thing on their website in streaming audio (crappy quality, but it's free).

Got to second this emotion, great band, though some people seem to have a problem with Amanda's armpit hair :schierke: (just kidding handsome you know I love you :casca:)
Here's something I'm listening to:

The Knife, electro with a beautyfull female vocal (hinges on the production a lot so make sure you listen to it on good speakers); "Heartbeats" would be good for an introduction.

And zenzile, some good 'ol dub commin' your way, check out the video for "Simple Lesson" and anything featuring Jamika.

I checked out a half dozen music videos on Youtube and I must say they were very well done, and the music matches it well. A little too mellow for everyday listening for me, but it was enjoyable.

At the moment I'm listening to Nirvana's "Nevermind" album. Even after 15 years it's still one of my favorites. :guts:

Yeah... Sigur Ros' new album cover is one of the worst of all time. Seriously. I ended up throwing away the album box after a handful of "oh uhhhhh, this is my wife's CD!" incidents with co-workers riding in my car with me.

The album is pretty ho-hum. Though it's totally awesome, the opening track is a real gimmick, since the rest of the album sounds completely different. The other tracks all really blend into one another. I swear there are about 2-3 interlude tracks that lead into other, similar sounding songs, making the whole experience like eating casseroles all week. I give it a 6/10, and Im a huge Sigur Ros fan.

Thank you for that. Thats all I needed to hear.

That is funny as hell!!

Sigur Ros is indeed good, but I can't comment on many of the other artists due to lack of familiarity.

As for favorite artists...

1. Autechre! These dudes are basically my internal image of what "musical genius" is. I can't imagine their creative process/how they make the music they do. Examples- (Significant style differences from song to song. Also, unofficial "videos", most of which are better of ignored, as music speaks for itself.):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0C7JcEIXzA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLK70Ipe-tI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbHp24SAkb8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWGUnrIiOoI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSdP-Nlsq1A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFaXiKb4EUk

And just for the hell of it, song gantz graf set to the haruhi dance!... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PStJ_H5SIQ
...Though the official video is way cooler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfwD05XA2YQ

Also, much much more from autechre. There's so much I'm not posting, because nearly everything they touch is gold. Fact: Autechre releases have never really sucked, though they may not always be a "pleasurable" listening experience (like in the case of Confield, or the above gantz graf). They've been pushing the envelope of "experimental" electronic music since '93 and haven't stopped since then.. And I'd definitely say they're "better" than Aphex Twin, on the whole.

2. Venetian Snares. Made of pure win. More manic/crazy than autechre, though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTBb9Tc7fPw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGn8gFXGFtY

Note: I think everyone should try listening to this music just due to it's sheer novelty. I don't expect it to be in too many people's tastes, but it is certainly original, and I think it holds about the same artistic merit as much of classical music. Only it's all weird and modern and does away with much of musical convention.

Manes - View. Tried to listen to How the world came to an end but once I heard the rapping it was time for the recycle bin.
Hollenthon - Entire Discography. These guys are top notch and I can't get enough of em'.
Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers

Just came from Lollapalooza weekend. Gotta say, even though I am no big fan on NIN... Man they stole the entire show. Anywho, saw this band in it. Nothing major, but I digged it.
