Album leak from two of the metal-bigwigs lately.

Atheist - Jupiter. I was never a big fan of the technical school of death metal, but this wasn't too bad, especially considering the negative reception some of their fans have given it. Just as good as their classic albums from the early 90s methinks.

Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit. This was more to my liking. It's probably heavier and darker than their previous works (only heard Mantle before), but it's almost ethereal when they switch over to the mellow acoustic/drone-sections and the spooky forest sounds. Feels almost like it's been recorded in Alaska.
I can't stand older Atheist to be honest, one of those over-rated bands along with Cynic. I love older Agalloch though, this new album is decent.

Jason Oliver from Infester has got some of the most incomprehensible vocals I've ever heard in music. Just sick! :beast:

Deathspell Omega - Paracletus. Another release making metalheads go nuts which I don't really see what's the big fuzz about. Just standard black metal with some nice atmosphere imo.

Unleashed - As Yggdrasil Trembles. Good Swedish death, but the lyrics are so hilariously bad even I am embarrassed (don't normally care about lyrics...).

That Infester album is an old school DM classic, under-rated I might add. Yeah, the new Deathspell Omega isn't all that, I prefer everything (full lengths and splits) they released between 2001 and 2005. Unleashed should honestly stop putting out albums ... they've done nothing for me since their first EP and first 2 albums.

I'm guessing you love Carnage's Dark Recollections or Incantation' Onward To Golgotha/ Mortal Throne Nazarene? What do you think of Ulcerate? They're coming out with a new one, I just pre-ordered it.

Honestly, I'm not very schooled when it comes to the old-school. With the exception of Entombed's early works and a few others I haven't got too many favorites there. I have heard Dark Recollections though (got hooked on Dan Seagrave's classic cover artwork).

Most of my DM favorites are in the "melodic death" subgenre - Edge of Sanity, Mors Principium Est, The Crown, Disarmonia Mundi, Dark Age, etc.

My brain just went the other way when you said Melodic DM! I can't get into Melodic DM at all, but Edge of Sanity is easily one of the most under-rated bands for the records it put out in the early 90's. Swano's mastering skills is legendary haha! I could recommend albums if you're looking at the various styles like old school/ Swedish/ Polish/ Brazilian/ Floridian/ DM styles, then the Brutal DM genre, Grindcore/ Goregrind, Doom (Funeral, Drone, Atmospheric) and select BM hehe. You could point me to your top picks of Melodic DM :slan:

I gave you lifelong traumas now eh? :???: I should add that I'm not really a metalhead. My biggest fetish is actually electronic and industrial music. I guess some of the reason I prefer melodic and progressive DM is because it presents a dualism between something astonishingly brutal and hauntingly beautiful, something I previously refused to believe the genre could do. After I got introduced to the music through bands like Cannibal Corpse I was under the delusion (along with lots of other newbs) that death metal was nothing more than a pissing-contest between people wanting to make the most inhumane growls, the fastest drumming, the most brutal chugga chugga riffs, the most extreme lyrics and most disgusting album artwork. It took bands like Opeth to make me realize there was much more to it.

As for my DM picks, it seems like most of my favorites hail from Sweden and Finland. Edge of Sanity's Crimson (and Crimson II) of course. The Crown - Deathrace King, Crowned in Terror and Possessed 13 are all excellent. At the Gates introduced me to the genre with Slaughter of the Soul. There's also In Flames sideproject Dimension Zero's He Who Shall Not Bleed.

Finland's got Mors Principium Est who made The Unborn and Liberation = Termination. Insomnium has Since The Day It All Came Down + Across the Dark and there's Shade Empire's Sinthetic (although this one's probably considered symphonic black metal).

Elsewhere you've got Disarmonia Mundi - Fragments of D-Generation, The Arcane Order - Machinery of Oblivion Dark Age's self-titled album and Sybreed who're mixing MDM with industrial. I like their last two albums.

I'm also a huge fan of folk metal which definitely share some bonds with DM, but I guess I shouldn't go into that here...

Edit- New Decemberists song from the upcoming album The King is Dead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR9DjdMrpHg Sounds good, can't wait. Btw, speaking of the Decemberists did anyone else love the last album, Hazards of Love? It was an incredible concept album.

Nekofrog is apparently coming out with an album. I can hardly wait to get it. Here's the song I'm currently listening to by this awesome artist. His style is acoustic/metal guitar. I also really like his drumming. Only thing I'm not particularly fond of is when he tries to sing, which is rare and isn't particularly good.(he doesn't sing at all in this song)

Tonight I'm going to see Eyes Set to Kill and D.R.U.G.S (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOChQZkBZHM).

I know, I'm excited too.

EDIT- Just got home from the show. No joke, one of the best shows I've ever seen. The energy was amazing and to top it off i got to meet practically every member of all the bands that night. I even got pictures with the two sisters of Eyes set to Kill (which I'll upload later, some of the beautiful women in the world). And i managed to get a free poster which the whole band signed. Best.night.Ever!

Sorry for my excitement, but of course there is a downside. My friends and I got pretty messed up in the mosh pit, like we were literally limping out the door. My nose is still red from getting elbowed and my friend messed up is knee, hopefully short term.

Cool story, also I wanted to note your resemblance to Hugh Jackman in the bottom photo. You should have yelled, "The Musical is BACK!" at the end of each song.

Hehe, yeah well, her rusty (sounding) voice hit the nail for me with the genre her band plays, imo.

Cool choices on Swans and Electric Wizard dude. Are you an Evoken fan? They have a new split out. I gotta jet, will post my list tonight.

Ahh, the first great album of 2011, and my god is it great. As a huge Decemberists fan I honestly was unsure how the group could possibly outdo their last album, the amazing and epic concept album The Hazards of Love, but of course the new album is great. It is however, much different and while I do miss the epicness and long, story like quality about old English folklore of the previous albums, this album is a fresh change of pace for the Decemberists. It's much more American, but the good kind, the modern rock sound REM and the old twangy folk of The Byrds. And of course the lyrics are still amazing and it's catchy as ever.

Man, that sounds like everything else ever done, ever. Is the culture so desperate that it's praising throwback soft rock (George Carlin said it best about that genre) bands nowadays too? R.E.M clones? Jebus. How about more Pearl Jam clones too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lutRF7lwY3M

Btw, The Decemberists? Really? :ganishka:

Most Funeral Doom bands do nothing for me. If i want massive slow walls of sound, i prefer drone.
I need a little more flavour to my doom. Umbra Nihil are an amazing underrated band, check them out (specially Gnoia). Warning were great too - beautiful song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-fCxBHCG4g

Here's a rock band deserving more praise - The 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szR6kf_t9p4

It can't sound like everything they have ever done while also sounding like "throwback soft rock", pick one. Fact is, it sounds like nothing they have ever done before, for better or worse. I don't how familiar you are with the genre but you're out of your element

Certainly not REM clones (but i can guess where you read that :schierke:). Peter Buck himself plays on the record btw, so if you're reminded of REM in that sense, well, you'd be right too. Unless he's cloning himself :troll:

Btw, The Decemberists? Really?

I miss when I could discuss indie music freely in my own thread

I own that Umbra Nihil album by the way, it's pretty good and yeah, under the radar as is Warning. The latter's new EP figures in my top 10 Ep's of the year. I like Doom, whether it's Atmospheric/ Drone/ Funeral/ Death and my least sub-genre would have to be Traditional. Here's what my best of 2010 list looks like -
