World Economy

My company just had a slew of layoffs (200 from another city), and unless they get a brand new business agreement I suspect they'll have even more. The only reason my company isn't completely panicking is because they have a contract with the military, but once that money well runs dry (in a couple years, maybe) we'll be in real big trouble.

I'm a recent hire so I'm probably okay, I just hope to survive the next couple of years until I find greener pastures (and get more experience, obviously, since that's what everyone is looking for these days).

Here in Europe, the lower middle Europe that is, things are also uncertain. The media rumble about the crisis, but we are used to crisis here since it has always been like that - extremely hard to find a job with decent hours and pay, prices rising, awful social policy. SO I guess crisis for the world is no news here since everyone is too used to it.

We do feel the gas shortage tough. It's really cold and they just lowered the central heating temperatures, but it should be a matter of days before the russians open the valves.

I personally still don't see this crisis having an impact on people. They still visit malls, they dine out and drive their cars as usual. But as I work in the transport&logistic department I can notice a drastic decrease in cargo being shipped through our harbour and it's a matter of time before it actually hits the "little people". What I find disturbing is our government, and probably this is the case elsewhere too, exploiting this "crisis" to justify their failures.

I had a job, and then I found myself demoted to seasonal and was laid-off just after the new year. I now spend my time making ends meet by ebaying my possessions.

Glorious Days these.

Heh, BTW, yay I got laid off again. Least I got more shit on my resume now. :puck:

Sorry to hear that guys. I'm sure things will come around soon though.

I don't expect us to see recovery within 2009 honestly, or even by 2010.

But I do think that the worst is over. Whatever you might think of Obama (he wasn't my choice for president) he did solve our liquidity crisis. I have a great deal of faith in our recovery because of what he, congress, and the federal reserve have been doing.

Sorry for the super late reply, but I'm a mechanical engineer at a diesel engine manufacturer (currently working in design). Things are getting pretty hectic because of a product launch, but I guess that's a good thing since I still have my job. :schnoz:

Let me just narrow this thread down to the US healthcare debate going on right now that hasn't been discussed much here. What do you guys think about Obamas plan and the direction its going? Lately I've been talking to friends and I can't believe how many people I know are spewing this socialism kill grandma Obama is Hitler bullshit. It's really frustrating to see how gullible some people are. I'd be interested in hearing some of your guys thoughts on the issue.

I find those people hilarious.
I can understand why the U.S. don't have free healthcare (It's pretty handy for a country not having to pay for it) but from a social point of view I find it incredible how a industrialized democracy doesn't have free healthcare for its citizens. I think this is how most Europeans feel.

It's just some of those minor differences between Europeans and Americans. We've had, fuck socialism, drilled into our minds for generations. Even in my case I've had family members telling me over and over again how the evil Nicaraguan Socialists took the farms away and tortured children of contra families during the war.

What may not be surprising, considering the peoples I speak of, most of those Americans (that I've met) who are so zealously against Socialism of any kind don't even really know what, exactly, socialism is. They just know what they've been told by parents and the gov'ts. And the fact that it's being used in such a derogatory way all over the news isn't helping matters much in understanding.

Like I said, that's probably not surprising.

Exactly. I would also like to point out how these same people have no problems with Public Schools or Libraries.
